We re-examine Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) with massless electron as a finite quantum field theory as advocated by Gell-Mann-Low, Baker-Johnson, Adler, Jackiw and others. We analyze the Dyson-Schwinger equation satisfied by the massless electron in finite QED and conclude that the theory admits no nontrivial eigenvalue for the fine structure constant.

Second-Order Radiative Corrections to the Axial Vector Anomaly

We re-examine the historically important decay of the neutral pion into two photons. Schwinger's Equivalence Theorem is confirmed. We then consider radiative corrections to the famous Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly. The result depends crucially on a physically motivated regularization scheme. Our approach is largely based on Schwinger's source (dispersion) method.

Maps for currents and anomalies in noncommutative gauge theories

We derive maps relating currents and their divergences in non-abelian U(N) noncommutative gauge theory with the corresponding expressions in the ordinary (commutative) description. For the U(1) theory, in the slowly-varying-field approximation, these maps are also seen to connect the star-gauge-covariant anomaly in the noncommutative theory with the standard Adler--Bell--Jackiw anomaly in the commutative version. For arbitrary fields, derivative corrections to the maps are explicitly computed up to O(θ^2).

Axial Vector Coupling and Chiral Anomaly in the Spectral Quark Model

We studied the Adler-Bardeen-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in the context of a finite chiral quark model known as the Spectral Quark Model. Within this model, we obtain the general non-local form of the axial vertex compatible with a non vanishing axial coupling, in the chiral limit. The triangle anomaly is computed and we show that the obtained dependence of the axial vertex with the spectral mass is necessary to ensure both finiteness and the correct violation of the chiral Ward-Takahashi identity.

Quantum anomaly of the transverse Ward-Takahashi relation for the axial-vector vertex

We study the possible quantum anomaly for the transverse Ward-Takahashi relations in four dimensional gauge theories based on the method of computing the axial-vector and the vector current operator equations. In addition to the well-known anomalous axial-vector divergence equation (the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly), we find the anomalous axial-vector curl equation, which leads to the quantum anomaly of the transverse Ward-Takahashi relation for the axial-vector vertex. The computation shows that there is no anomaly for the transverse Ward-Takahashi relation for the vector vertex.

Anomalies of discrete symmetries in three dimensions and group cohomology

We study 't Hooft anomalies for a global discrete internal symmetry G. We construct examples of bosonic field theories in three dimensions with a non-vanishing 't Hooft anomaly for a discrete global symmetry. We also construct field theories in three dimensions with a global discrete internal symmetry G_1 x G_2 such that gauging G_1 necessarily breaks G_2 and vice versa. This is analogous to the Adler-Bell-Jackiw axial anomaly in four dimensions and parity anomaly in three dimensions.

A Goldstone theorem for continuous non-invertible symmetries

We study systems with an Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in terms of non-invertible symmetry. We present a new kind of non-invertible charge defect where a key role is played by a local current operator localized on the defect. The charge defects are now labeled by elements of a continuous $U(1)$. We use this construction to prove an analogue of Goldstone's theorem for such non-invertible symmetries. We comment on possible applications to string theory.

U(1) Problem Revisited

In the anomaly equation for the singlet axial current the chiral limit of the quark mass term does not vanish but comprises contribution from fermion zero modes whose integral exactly cancels the topological charge arising from the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly. This signals chiral symmetry and opens a window for restoring the status of Goldstone boson for the singlet $η^\prime$ without having to invoke the large $N_c$ limit in the underlying QCD. In this paper, we examine the coupling of matter fields to gravity within the framework of the Standard Model of particle physics. The coupling is described in terms of Weyl fermions of a definite chirality, and employs only (anti)self-dual or left-handed spin connection fields. It is known from the work of Ashtekar and others that such fields can furnish a complete description of gravity without matter. Chiral Anomalies In Field Theories

The role of the contribution from the fermion mass term in the axial vector Ward identity in generating the U(1) axial anomaly, both local and global, is elucidated. Gauge invariance requires the fermion to decouple from the gauge field if it is very heavy. This identifies the Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly with the asymptotic limit of the sign reversed mass term.
