We propose a quantum algorithm to solve systems of nonlinear differential equations. Using a quantum feature map encoding, we define functions as expectation values of parametrized quantum circuits. We use automatic differentiation to represent function derivatives in an analytical form as differentiable quantum circuits (DQCs), thus avoiding inaccurate finite difference procedures for calculating gradients. We describe a hybrid quantum-classical workflow where DQCs are trained to satisfy differential equations and specified boundary conditions. As a particular example setting, we show how this approach can implement a spectral method for solving differential equations in a high-dimensional feature space. From a technical perspective, we design a Chebyshev quantum feature map that offers a powerful basis set of fitting polynomials and possesses rich expressivity. We simulate the algorithm to solve an instance of Navier-Stokes equations, and compute density, temperature and velocity profiles for the fluid flow in a convergent-divergent nozzle.
Quantum architecture search (QAS) is the process of automating architecture engineering of quantum circuits. It has been desired to construct a powerful and general QAS platform which can significantly accelerate current efforts to identify quantum advantages of error-prone and depth-limited quantum circuits in the NISQ era. Hereby, we propose a general framework of differentiable quantum architecture search (DQAS), which enables automated designs of quantum circuits in an end-to-end differentiable fashion. We present several examples of circuit design problems to demonstrate the power of DQAS…
Constructing quantum circuits for efficient state preparation belongs to the central topics in the field of quantum information and computation. As the number of qubits grows fast, methods to derive large-scale quantum circuits are strongly desired. In this work, we propose the automatically differentiable quantum circuit (ADQC) approach to efficiently prepare arbitrary quantum many-qubit states. A key ingredient is to introduce the latent gates whose decompositions give the unitary gates that form the quantum circuit. The circuit is optimized by updating the latent gates using back propagatio…

Quantum circuit Born machines are generative models which represent the probability distribution of classical dataset as quantum pure states. Computational complexity considerations of the quantum sampling problem suggest that the quantum circuits exhibit stronger expressibility compared to classical neural networks. One can efficiently draw samples from the quantum circuits via projective measurements on qubits. However, similar to the leading implicit generative models in deep learning, such as the generative adversarial networks, the quantum circuits cannot provide the likelihood of the gen…
Effective quantum computation relies upon making good use of the exponential information capacity of a quantum machine. A large barrier to designing quantum algorithms for execution on real quantum machines is that, in general, it is intractably difficult to construct an arbitrary quantum state to high precision. Many quantum algorithms rely instead upon initializing the machine in a simple state, and evolving the state through an efficient (i.e. at most polynomial-depth) quantum algorithm. In this work, we show that there exist families of quantum states that can be prepared to high precision…

A flagship feature in PennyLane is the differentiable Hartree-Fock solver, allowing users to compute exact gradients of molecular Hamiltonians with respect to nuclear coordinates and basis set parameters. PennyLane provides specialized operations for quantum chemistry, including ex…
We construct quantum circuits for solving one-dimensional Schrödinger equations. Simulations of three typical examples, i.e., harmonic oscillator, square-well and Coulomb potential, show that reasonable results can be obtained with eight qubits. Our simulations show that simple quantum circuits can solve the standard quantum mechanical problems.
We present a framework for differentiable quantum transforms. Such transforms are metaprograms capable of manipulating quantum programs in a way that preserves their differentiability. We highlight their potential with a set of relevant examples across quantum computing (gradient computation, circuit compilation, and error mitigation), and implement them using the transform framework of PennyLane, a software library for differentiable quantum programming. In this framework, the transforms themselves are differentiable and can be parametrized and optimized, which opens up the possibility of imp…
Variational Quantum Circuits (VQCs), or the so-called quantum neural-networks, are predicted to be one of the most important near-term quantum applications, not only because of their similar promises as classical neural-networks, but also because of their feasibility on near-term noisy intermediate-size quantum (NISQ) machines. The need for gradient information in the training procedure of VQC applications has stimulated the development of auto-differentiation techniques for quantum circuits. We propose the first formalization of this technique, not only in the context of quantum circuits but …
Recently, it has been presented some algorithms and physical models which give prospects for construction of quantum computers capable to solve systems of linear equations. The common feature which is shared in these works is the use of qubits which allow to solve systems with $2^n$ variables. In this work we propose a quantum circuit based on qutrits architecture which directly allows for solving systems of equations with three variables. Proposed circuit can be easily generalized to those with $3^n$ variables. We also present some numerical experiments to verify the correctness of proposed s…
In a recent work we presented a recursive algorithm to compute the matrix elements of a generic Gaussian transformation in the photon-number basis. Its purpose was to evolve a quantum state by building the transformation matrix and subsequently computing the matrix-vector product. Here we present a faster algorithm that computes the final state without having to generate the full transformation matrix first. With this algorithm we bring the time complexity of computing the Gaussian evolution of an $N$-dimensional $M$-mode state from $O(MN^{2M})$ to $O(M(N^2/2)^M)$, which is an exponential impr…
We give a general method of construting quantum circuit for random \QTR{it}{satisfiability} (SAT) problems with the basic logic gates such as multi-qubit controlled-NOT and NOT gates. The sizes of these circuits are almost the same as the sizes of the SAT formulas. Further, a parallelization scheme is described to solve random SAT problems efficiently through these quantum circuits in \QTR{it}{nuclear magnetic resonance} (NMR) ensemble quantum computing. This scheme exploits truly mixed states as input states rather than pseudo-pure states, and combines with the topological nanture of the NMR …
Simulating quantum circuits using classical computers lets us analyse the inner workings of quantum algorithms. The most complete type of simulation, strong simulation, is believed to be generally inefficient. Nevertheless, several efficient strong simulation techniques are known for restricted families of quantum circuits and we develop an additional technique in this article. Further, we show that strong simulation algorithms perform another fundamental task: solving search problems. Efficient strong simulation techniques allow solutions to a class of search problems to be counted and found …
Recently, it is shown that quantum computers can be used for obtaining certain information about the solution of a linear system Ax=b exponentially faster than what is possible with classical computation. Here we first review some key aspects of the algorithm from the standpoint of finding its efficient quantum circuit implementation using only elementary quantum operations, which is important for determining the potential usefulness of the algorithm in practical settings. Then we present a small-scale quantum circuit that solves a 2x2 linear system. The quantum circuit uses only 4 qubits, imp…
The Poisson equation occurs in many areas of science and engineering. Here we focus on its numerical solution for an equation in d dimensions. In particular we present a quantum algorithm and a scalable quantum circuit design which approximates the solution of the Poisson equation on a grid with error \varepsilon. We assume we are given a supersposition of function evaluations of the right hand side of the Poisson equation. The algorithm produces a quantum state encoding the solution. The number of quantum operations and the number of qubits used by the circuit is almost linear in d and polylo…
We propose a random circuit model to analyze the impact of noise on the performance of variational quantum circuits for classical optimization problems. Our model accounts for the propagation of arbitrary single qubit errors through the circuit. We find that even with a small noise rate, the quality of the obtained classical optima is low on average and a single-qubit error rate of $1 / nD$, where $n$ is the number of qubits and $D$ is the circuit depth, is needed for the possibility of a quantum advantage. We estimate that this translates to an error rate lower than $10^{-6}$ using QAOA for c…
Diners dilemma is one of the most interesting problems in both economic and game theories. Here, we solve this problem for n (number of players) =4 with quantum rules and we are able to remove the dilemma of diners between the Pareto optimal and Nash equilibrium points of the game. We find the quantum strategy that gives maximum payoff for each diner without affecting the payoff and strategy of others. We use the quantum principles of superposition and entanglement that gives supremacy over any classical strategies. We present the circuit implementation for the game, design it on the IBM quant…
Many methods solve Poisson equations by using grid techniques which discretize the problem in each dimension. Most of these algorithms are subject to the curse of dimensionality, so that they need exponential runtime. In the paper "Quantum algorithm and circuit design solving the Poisson equation" a quantum algorithm is shown running in polylog time to produce a quantum state representing the solution of the Poisson equation. In this paper a quantum simulation of an extended circuit design based on this algorithm is made on a classical computer. Our purpose is to test an efficient circuit desi…

We extend the ability of unitary quantum circuits by interfacing it with classical autoregressive neural networks. The combined model parametrizes a variational density matrix as a classical mixture of quantum pure states, where the autoregressive network generates bitstring samples as input states to the quantum circuit. We devise an efficient variational algorithm to jointly optimize the classical neural network and the quantum circuit for quantum statistical mechanics problems. One can obtain thermal observables such as the variational free energy, entropy, and specific heat. As a by produc…

We formulate the first differentiable analog quantum computing framework with a specific parameterization design at the analog signal (pulse) level to better exploit near-term quantum devices via variational methods. We further propose a scalable approach to estimate the gradients of quantum dynamics using a forward pass with Monte Carlo sampling, which leads to a quantum stochastic gradient descent algorithm for scalable gradient-based training in our framework. Applying our framework to quantum optimization and control, we observe a significant advantage of differentiable analog quantum comp…
Local Hamiltonians of fermionic systems on a lattice can be mapped onto local qubit Hamiltonians. Maintaining the locality of the operators comes at the expense of increasing the Hilbert space with auxiliary degrees of freedom. In order to retrieve the lower-dimensional physical Hilbert space that represents fermionic degrees of freedom, one must satisfy a set of constraints. In this work, we introduce quantum circuits that exactly satisfy these stringent constraints. We demonstrate how maintaining locality allows one to carry out a Trotterized time-evolution with constant circuit depth per ti…
Quantum algorithm, as compared to classical algorithm, plays a notable role in solving linear systems of equations with an exponential speedup. Here, we demonstrate a method for solving a particular system of equations by using the concept of well-known Grover's quantum search algorithm. The algorithm finds the solution by rotating the initial state vector in the Hilbert space to get the target solution state. It mainly involves finding particular matrices that solve the set of equations and constructing corresponding quantum circuits using the basic quantum gates. We explicitly illustrate the…
We study the problem of generating independent samples from the output distribution of Google's Sycamore quantum circuits with a target fidelity, which is believed to be beyond the reach of classical supercomputers and has been used to demonstrate quantum supremacy. We propose a new method to classically solve this problem by contracting the corresponding tensor network just once, and is massively more efficient than existing methods in obtaining a large number of uncorrelated samples with a target fidelity. For the Sycamore quantum supremacy circuit with $53$ qubits and $20$ cycles, we have g…

Toeplitz and Hankel matrices have been a subject of intense interest in a wide range of science and engineering related applications. In this paper, we show that quantum circuits can efficiently implement sparse or Fourier-sparse Toeplitz and Hankel matrices. This provides an essential ingredient for solving many physical problems with Toeplitz or Hankel symmetry in the quantum setting with deterministic queries.
The theory of quantum algorithms promises unprecedented benefits of harnessing the laws of quantum mechanics for solving certain computational problems. A persistent obstacle to using such algorithms for solving a wide range of real-world problems is the cost of loading classical data to a quantum state. Several quantum circuit-based methods have been proposed for encoding classical data as probability amplitudes of a quantum state. However, they require either quantum circuit depth or width to grow linearly with the data size, even though the other dimension of the quantum circuit grows logar…

Quantum mechanics is inherently probabilistic in light of Born's rule. Using quantum circuits as probabilistic generative models for classical data exploits their superior expressibility and efficient direct sampling ability. However, training of quantum circuits can be more challenging compared to classical neural networks due to lack of efficient differentiable learning algorithm. We devise an adversarial quantum-classical hybrid training scheme via coupling a quantum circuit generator and a classical neural network discriminator together. After training, the quantum circuit generative model…
