In this work we investigate whether a certain phenomenological extension to the general relativity (GR), in the form of a gravitational phase transition (GPT) in the Universe, can reduce the external $Planck$ tensions with the local Hubble measurements and the distribution of matter, characterized by $σ_8$, as well as its internal inconsistencies in the lensing amplitude and the low--high $\ell$ parameter estimates. We introduce new degrees of freedom into the background and the two scalar perturbation equations in the Newtonian gauge, with simultaneous transitions from an early gravitational phase equivalent to GR toward a late phase. We model the transition as a "tanh" parametrized by the transition redshift $z_{\rm t}$ and width $α$, with amplitudes $Λ(z)$ and $(μ(z),γ(z))$ for the background and perturbations respectively. We verify the consistency of the datasets used in this work in the GPT framework and confirm that the individual tensions do not require conflicting transitions. We find that the joint datasets prefer a recent transition at $z_{\rm t}\approx 0.9$ in the background and perturbed Einstein equations, driven mainly by the local Hubble measurement. This transition relaxes all the tensions considered in this work.
In this work we generalize the idea of a gravitational phase transition or GPT at late times to allow for a modified gravity scenario in the early universe as well. The original GPT was shown to simultaneously relax the $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions and {\it Planck} internal inconsistencies. However, the primary results from GPT predictions implied disagreement with the data from the baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO). Here we investigate whether the generalized GPT scenario could address the Hubble tension in the presence of the BAO data as well. We find that, despite the vastly enlarged gravita…
We investigate a phenomenological non-gravitational coupling between dark energy and dark matter, where the interaction in the dark sector is parameterized as an energy transfer either from dark matter to dark energy or the opposite. The models are constrained by a whole host of updated cosmological data: cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies and polarization, high-redshift supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, redshift space distortions and gravitational lensing. Both models are found to be compatible with all cosmological observables, but in the case where dark matter deca…
We use recent astrophysical and local tests of the stability of the fine-structure constant, $α$, to constrain a particular phenomenological but physically motivated class of models in which the dark energy equation of state can undergo a rapid transition at low redshifts, perhaps associated with the onset of the acceleration phase. We set constraints on the phenomenological parameters describing such possible transitions, in particular improving previous constraints (which used only cosmological data) on the present-day value of the dark energy equation of state in these models. We specifical…
In this paper, we propose a new phenomenological two parameter parametrization of $q(z)$ to constrain barotropic dark energy models by considering a spatially flat FRW universe, neglecting the radiation component, and reconstructing the effective equation of state (EoS). This two free-parameter EoS reconstruction shows a non-monotonic behavior, pointing to a more general fitting for the scalar field models, like thawing and freezing models. We constrain the $q(z)$ free parameters using the observational data of the Hubble parameter obtained from cosmic chronometers, the joint-light-analysis ty…
A fast transition between a standard matter-like era and a late $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM)-like epoch (or more in general, a CDM+DE era), generated by a single Unified Dark Matter component, can provide a new interesting paradigm in the context of general relativity, alternative to $Λ$CDM itself or other forms of DE or modified gravity theories invoked to explain the observed acceleration of the Universe. UDM models with a fast transition have interesting features, leading to measurable predictions, thus they should be clearly distinguishable from $Λ$CDM (and alternatives) through observati…
Motivated by the current status of the cosmological observations and significant tensions in the estimated values of some key parameters assuming the standard $Λ$CDM model, we propose a simple but radical phenomenological emergent dark energy model where dark energy has no effective presence in the past and emerges at the later times. Theoretically, in this phenomenological dark energy model with zero degree of freedom (similar to a $Λ$CDM model), one can derive that the equation of state of dark energy increases from $-\frac{2}{3 {\rm{ln}}\, 10} -1$ in the past to $-1$ in the future. We show …

The relic neutrinos from old supernova explosions are among the most ancient neutrino fluxes within experimental reach. Thus, the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) could teach us if neutrino masses were different in the past (redshifts $z\lesssim 5$). Oscillations inside the supernova depend strongly on the neutrino mass-squared differences and the values of the mixing angles, rendering the DSNB energy spectrum sensitive to variations of these parameters. Considering a purely phenomenological parameterization of the neutrino masses as a function of redshift, we compute the expected …
We present a unified framework for the study of late time cosmic acceleration. Using methods of effective field theory, we show that existing proposals for late time acceleration can be subsumed in a single framework, rather than many compartmentalized theories. We construct the most general action consistent with symmetry principles, derive the background and perturbation evolution equations, and demonstrate that for special choices of our parameters we can reproduce results already existing in the literature. Lastly, we lay the foundation for future work placing phenomenological constraints …

In this work we investigate several theoretical and phenomenological implications of a scalar -$F(R)$ gravity containing a non-minimal coupling to the scalar curvature. This kind of model is a generalization of axion-$F(R)$ gravity models, so we shall examine several implications of the latter theory. Firstly we study in detail the Einstein frame picture of the model, and also we discuss the dynamics of the cosmological system. By appropriately using the equations of motion, we demonstrate that an arbitrary cosmological evolution can be realized. Also we study the gravitational waves of the th…
