Industrial and model polymer nanocomposites are often formulated with coating agents to improve polymer-nanoparticle (NP) compatibility. Here the localization of silane coating agents in styrene-butadiene nanocomposite is investigated through the segmental dynamics of the polymer matrix by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS), allowing the detection of silanes in the matrix through their plasticization effect. This acceleration of dynamics was followed via the shift of $τ$max of the $α$-relaxation induced by the presence of coating agents of different molecular weight and quantity, for different amounts of incorporated colloidal silica NPs (R $\approx$ 12.5 nm, polydispersity 12%). Any noteworthy contribution of interfacial polymer layers on $τ$max has been excluded by reference measurements with bare NPs. Our approach allowed quantifying the partition between the matrix and the NP interfaces, and was confirmed independently by calorimetry. As a control parameter, the silane grafting reaction could be activated or not, which was confirmed by the absence (resp. presence) of partitioning with the matrix. Our main result is that in the first steps of material formulation, before any grafting reaction, coating agents both cover the silica surface by adsorption and mix with the polymer matrix-in particular if the latter has chemical compatibility via its functional groups. Silane adsorption was found to be comparable to the grafted amount (1.1 nm-2), and does not increase further, confirming that the plateau of the adsorption isotherm is reached in industrial formulations. These results are hoped to contribute to a better understanding of the surface reactions taking place during complex formulation processes of nanocomposites, namely the exact amounts at stake, e.g., in industrial mixers. Final material properties are affected both through NP-matrix compatibility and plasticization of the latter by unreacted molecules. 2
We report a novel class of polymer nanocomposite composed of organic nanoparticles dispersed in polymer matrix, with the particle sizes of 30-120 nm in radius. The organic nanoparticles were formed by the self-assembly of protonated poly(4-vinyl-pyridine)-r-poly(acrylonitrile) and amphiphilic metanil yellow dye molecules through electrostatic interactions in aqueous solution. A strongly broadened Raman shift band was probed, suggesting the presence of enhanced optoelectronic property from the polymer nanocomposite. Here, using random-copolymer polyelectrolytes and mesogenic amphiphiles as the …
Nanocomposite membranes are an emerging filtration material in the production of clean water. Recently, the fabrication of porous nanocomposite membranes via solvent transfer induced phase separation (STrIPS) was introduced. During STrIPS, the phase separation of two immiscible liquids is arrested by the attachment of nanoparticles at the liquid-liquid interface, generating a porous particle-stabilized membrane template. STrIPS nanocomposite membranes, however, have so far only been produced as hollow fibers. To overcome this, we designed a roll-to-roll (R2R)-process for the continuous fabrica…
A new method based on the combination of small-anglescattering, reverse Monte Carlo simulations, and an aggregate recognition algorithm is proposed to characterize the structure of nanoparticle suspensions in solvents and polymer nanocomposites, allowing detailedstudies of the impact of different nanoparticle surface modifications.Experimental small-angle scattering is reproduced using simulated annealing of configurations of polydisperse particles in a simulation box compatible with the lowest experimental q-vector. Then, properties of interest likeaggregation states are extracted from these …
The effect of silica nanoparticles on transient microemulsion networks made of microemulsion droplets and telechelic copolymer molecules in water is studied, as a function of droplet size and concentration, amount of copolymer, and nanoparticle volume fraction. The phase diagram is found to be affected, and in particular the percolation threshold characterized by rheology is shifted upon addition of nanoparticles, suggesting participation of the particles in the network. This leads to a peculiar reinforcement behaviour of such microemulsion nanocomposites, the silica influencing both the modul…
The crazing behavior of polymer nanocomposites formed by blending polymer grafted nanoparticles with an entangled polymer melt is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on the three key differences in the crazing behavior of a composite relative to the pure homopolymer matrix, namely, a lower yield stress, a smaller extension ratio and a grafted chain length dependent failure stress. The yield behavior is found to be mostly controlled by the local nanoparticle-grafted polymer interfacial energy, with the grafted polymer-polymer matrix interfacial structure being of little to no re…
The structural features of polystyrene brushes grafted on spherical silica nanoparticles immersed in polystyrene are investigated by means of a Monte Carlo methodology based on polymer mean field theory. The nanoparticle radii (either 8 nm or 13 nm) are held constant, while the grafting density and the lengths of grafted and matrix chains are varied systematically in a series of simulations. The primary objective of this work is to simulate realistic nanocomposite systems of specific chemistry at experimentally accessible length scales and study the structure and scaling of the grafted brush. …
The structure and interactions of coated silica nanoparticles have been studied in water using molecular dynamics simulations. For 5 nm diameter amorphous silica nanoparticles we studied the effects of varying the chain length and grafting density of polyethylene oxide (PEO) on the nanoparticle coating's shape and on nanoparticle-nanoparticle effective forces. For short ligands of length $n=6$ and $n=20$ repeat units, the coatings are radially symmetric while for longer chains ($n=100$) the coatings are highly anisotropic. This anisotropy appears to be governed primarily by chain length, with …
The present communication reports the first direct measurement of the conformation of a polymer corona grafted around silica nano-particles dispersed inside a nanocomposite, a matrix of the same polymer. This measurement constitutes an experimental breakthrough based on a refined combination of chemical synthesis, which permits to match the contribution of the neutron silica signal inside the composite, and the use of complementary scattering methods SANS and SAXS to extract the grafted polymer layer form factor from the inter-particles silica structure factor. The modelization of the signal o…
The existence of magnetic dipolar nanoparticle chains at zero field has been predicted theoretically for decades, but these structures are rarely observed experimentally. A prerequisite is a permanent magnetic moment on the particles forming the chain. Here we report on the observation of magnetic dipolar chains of spherical iron oxide nanoparticles with a diameter of \SI{12.8}{\nano\meter}. The nanoparticles are embedded in an ultrathin polymer film. Due to the high viscosity of the polymer matrix, the dominating aggregation mechanism is driven by dipolar interactions. Smaller iron oxide nano…
We study the influence of spherical, triangular, and rod-like nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of a polymer nanocomposite (PNC), via coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on how the nanoparticle size, loading, mass, and shape influence the PNC's elastic modulus, stress at failure and resistance against cavity formation and growth, under external stress. We find that in the regime of strong polymer-nanoparticle interactions, the formation of a polymer network via temporary polymer-nanoparticle crosslinks has a predominant role on the PNC reinforcement. Spherical nano…
Shearing of nanocomposites has shown to produce ordered nanostructures and orientation in the polymeric matrix. Due to the importance of the formation of an ordered structure of nanoparticles in a polymeric matrix to device wearable, flexible and photonic materials, its useful to get an insight of the shear-induced ordering and other properties of the polymeric nanocomposites. In this paper, we use a model Wormlike micellar matrix to study the arrangement and morphology of nanoparticles in the composite when the system is sheared using a hybrid multiparticle dynamics and molecular dynamics sim…
The structure of a polystyrene matrix filled with tightly cross-linked polystyrene nanoparticles, forming an athermal nanocomposite system, is investigated by means of a Monte Carlo sampling formalism. The polymer chains are represented as random walks and the system is described through a coarse grained Hamiltonian. This approach is related to self-consistent-field theory but does not invoke a saddle point approximation and is suitable for treating large three-dimensional systems. The local structure of the polymer matrix in the vicinity of the nanoparticles is found to be different in many w…
Some of our recent studies of the structure and mechanical properties of a special type of nanocomposite are reviewed here. In silica-latex systems, a latex film with silica inclusions is formed from a colloidal solution of both components. During drying of the solution, the formation of silica domains can be controlled via the physico-chemical properties of the solution. Well-defined silica aggregates embedded in a polymer matrix can be generated, and the mechanical properties of the resulting nanocomposite have been shown to be directly correlated to the average structure.
Over the past two decades polymer nanocomposites have received tremendous interest from industry and academia due to their advanced properties comparative to polymer blends. Many computational studies have revealed that the macroscopic properties of polymer nanocomposites depend strongly on the microscopic polymer structure and conformations. In this article we review simulation studies of the fundamental problem of polymer structure and dimensions in nanocomposites containing bare spherical or rod nanoparticles. Experimentally, there is controversy over whether the addition of nanoparticles i…
In this feature article, we provide an overview of our research on statistical copolymers as a coating material for metal oxide nanoparticles and surfaces. These copolymers contain functional groups enabling non-covalent binding to oxide surfaces and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) polymers for colloidal stability and stealthiness. The functional groups are organic derivatives of phosphorous acid compounds R-H$_2$PO$_3$, also known as phosphonic acids that have been screened for their strong affinity to metals and their ability to build multidentate binding. Herein we develop a polymer-based coati…
Nanocomposite materials made of block copolymer and nanoparticles display properties which can be different from the purely polymeric matrix. The resulting material is a crossover of the original properties of the block copolymer and the presence of the assembled nanoparticles. We propose a mesoscopic study via cell dynamic simulations to quantitatively assert the properties of such hybrid materials. The most relevant parameters are identified to be the fraction of nanoparticles in the system and its chemical affinity, while the nanoparticle size with respect to the block copolymer length scal…
Enthalpic interactions at the interface between nanoparticles and matrix polymers is known to influence various properties of the resultant polymer nanocomposites (PNC). For athermal PNCs, consisting of grafted nanoparticles embedded in chemically identical polymers, the role and extent of the interface layer (IL) interactions in determining the properties of the nanocomposites is not very clear. Here, we demonstrate the influence of the interfacial layer dynamics on the fragility and dynamical heterogeneity (DH) of athermal and glassy PNCs. The IL properties are altered by changing the grafte…
Modification of calcium carbonate particles with surfactant significantly improves the properties of the calcium carbonate coating on paper. Unmodified and CTAB and oleate-modified calcium carbonate nanoparticles were prepared using the wet carbonation technique for paper coating. CTAB (cationic surfactant) and sodium oleate (anionic surfactant) were used to modify the size, morphology, and surface properties of the precipitated nanoparticles. The obtained particles were characterized by XRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, TGA and TEM. Coating colors were formulated from the …
The structure of silica-latex nanocomposites of three matrix chain masses (20, 50, and 160 kg/mol of poly(ethyl methacrylate)) are studied using a SAXS/TEM approach, coupled via Monte Carlo simulations of scattering of fully polydisperse silica nanoparticle aggregates. At low silica concentrations (1 vol. %), the impact of the matrix chain mass on the structure is quantified in terms of the aggregation number distribution function, highest mass leading to individual dispersion, whereas the lower masses favor the formation of small aggregates. Both simulations for SAXS and TEM give compatible a…
Using X- ray photon correlation spectroscopy measurements on gold nanoparticles embedded in polymethylmethacrylate we provide evidence for existence of an intrinsic length scale for dynamic heterogeneity in polymer nanocomposites similar to that in other soft materials. We also show how the dynamics varies in a complex way with various parameters.
A large body of experimental work on the microstructure and dynamics of simplifiedindustrial nanocomposites made of disordered silica filler in a styrene-butadiene matrixby solid-phase mixing is regrouped and critically discussed in this feature article. Recentresults encompass systems with varying polymer mass, grafting functionality, and fillercontent. They have been obtained by simulation-based structural modelling of nanoparticleaggregate size and mass deduced from small-angle scattering and transmission electronmicroscopy. Our model has been validated by independent swelling experiments.C…
We investigate the local elastic properties of polystyrene doped with SiO2 nanoparticles by analyzing the local density fluctuations. The density fluctuations were established from coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations performed with the MARTINI force field. A significant increase in polystyrene stiffness was revealed within a characteristic range of 1.4 nm from the nanoparticle, while polystyrene density saturates to the bulk value at significantly shorter distances. The enhancement of the local elastic properties of the polymer was attributed to the effect of non-affine deformations …
While recent efforts have shown how local structure plays an essential role in the dynamic heterogeneity of homogeneous glass-forming materials, systems containing interfaces such as thin films or composite materials remain poorly understood. It is known that interfaces perturb the molecular packing nearby, however, numerous studies show the dynamics are modified over a much larger range. Here, we examine the dynamics in polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) using a combination of simulations and experiments and quantitatively separate the role of polymer packing from other effects on the dynamics, as…
We demonstrate a novel in situ polymerization technique to develop localized polymer coatings on the surface of dispersed pristine graphene sheets. Graphene sheets show great promise as strong, conductive fillers in polymer nanocomposites; however, difficulties in dispersion quality and interfacial strength between filler and matrix have been a persistent problem for graphene-based nanocomposites, particularly for pristine graphene. To address this problem, a physisorbed polymer layer is used to stabilize graphene sheets in solution. To form this protective layer, an organic microenvironment i…
Although promising for biomedicine, the clinical translation of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is limited by low biocompatibility and stability in biological fluids. A common strategy to circumvent this drawback consists in disguising the active inorganic core with a lipid bilayer coating, reminiscent of the structure of the cell membrane to redefine the chemical and biological identity of NPs. While recent reports introduced membrane coating procedures for NPs, a robust and accessible method to quantify the integrity of the bilayer coverage is not yet available. To fill this gap, we prepared S…
We report the presence of a correlation between the bulk and interfacial properties of electrostatic coacervate complexes. Complexes were obtained by co-assembly between cationic-neutral diblocks and oppositely charged surfactant micelles or 7 nm cerium oxide nanoparticles. Light scattering and reflectometry measurements revealed that the hybrid nanoparticle aggregates were more stable both through dilution and rinsing (from either a polystyrene or a silica surfaces) than their surfactant counterparts. These findings were attributed to a marked difference in critical association concentration …
We report an experimental study of the drying-induced peeling of a bilayer, consisting of an elastomeric disk coated with a suspension of nanoparticles. We show that although capillary forces associated with the scale of the droplet can not compete with the adhesion of the elastomer on a surface, nevertheless large tensile stresses develop in the coating, which results in a moment bending the bilayer. We attribute this stress to the nano-menisci in the pores of the colloidal material and we propose a model that describes successfully the early stage curvature of the bilayer. Thus, we show that…
Designable media can control properties of nanocomposite materials by spatially organizing nanoparticles. Here we theoretically study particle organization by ultrathin polymer films of grafted chains (``brushes''). Polymer-soluble nanoparticles smaller than a brush-determined threshold disperse in the film to a depth scaling inversely with particle volume. In the polymer-insoluble case, aggregation is directed: provided particles are non-wetting at the film surface, the brush stabilizes the dispersion and selects its final morphology of giant elongated aggregates with a brush-selected width.
Colloidal crystals exhibit structural color without any color pigment due to the crystals' periodic nanostructure, which can interfere with visible light. This crystal structure is iridescent as the resulting color changes with the viewing or illumination angle, which limits its use for printing or displays. To eliminate the iridescent property, it is important to make the packing of the colloidal nanoparticles disordered. Here, we introduce a drop-casting method where a droplet of a water- ethanol mixture containing monodisperse polymer-coated silica nanoparticles creates a relatively uniform…
