The nature of the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) remains a mystery. Binary systems consisting of a white dwarf (WD) and a main-sequence (MS) donor are potential progenitors of SNe Ia, in which a thermonuclear explosion of the WD may occur when its mass reaches the Chandrasekhar limit during accretion of material from a companion star. In the present work, we address theoretical rates and delay times of a specific MS donor channel to SNe Ia, in which a He star+MS binary produced from a common envelope event subsequently forms a WD+MS system without the He star undergoing mass transfer by Roche lobe overflow. By combining the results of self-consistent binary evolution calculations with population synthesis models, we find that the contribution of SNe Ia in this channel is around 2.0e-4 per year. In addition, we find that delay times of SNe Ia in this channel cover a range of about 1.0-2.6 Gyr, and almost all SNe Ia produced in this way (about 97%) have a delay time of > 1 Gyr. While the rate of SN Ia in this work is about 10% of the overall SN Ia rate, the channel represents a possible contribution to the old population (1-3 Gyr) of observed SNe Ia.
We examine a triple-star evolution that might lead to core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) in stellar populations that are too old to allow for single or binary evolution to form CCSNe, i.e., where the most massive stars that evolve off the main sequence have masses of ~4-5Mo. In the scenario we examine the most massive star in the triple system, of mass ~4-5Mo, transfers mass to an inner binary system at an orbital separation of ~100-1000Ro. The initial orbital separation of the inner binary is ~10-50Ro. The inner binary accretes most of the mass that the primary star loses and the two stars expa…
SN1991bg-like supernovae are a distinct subclass of thermonuclear supernovae (SNe Ia). Their spectral and photometric peculiarities indicate their progenitors and explosion mechanism differ from `normal' SNe Ia. One method of determining information about supernova progenitors we cannot directly observe is to observe the stellar population adjacent to the apparent supernova explosion site to infer the distribution of stellar population ages and metallicities. We obtain integral field observations and analyse the spectra extracted from regions of projected radius $\sim\,\mathrm{kpc}$ about the …
Recent investigations of the WD + MS channel of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) imply that this channel may be the main contribution to the old population (>1Gyr) of SNe Ia. In the WD + MS channel, the WD could accrete material from a main-sequence or a slightly evolved star until it reaches the Chandrasekhar mass limit. The companions in this channel would survive after SN explosion and show distinguishing properties. In this Letter, based on SN Ia production regions of the WD + MS channel and three formation channels of WD + MS systems, we performed a detailed binary population synthesis study t…
Ca-rich transients (CRTs, 2005E-like supernovae) exhibit unusually strong Ca features during their nebular phase, and their distribution in their host galaxies indicates that they belong to a metal-poor old population. We carried out a series of binary population synthesis and presented four different channels of forming CO WD + He WD pairs. We selected the systems fulfilling the constraints of the old population and the birth rate from all the CO WD + He WD pairs by constraining the component mass of the WD pairs. For the four channels, the stable Roche lobe overflow (RLOF) could have a signi…

We use the star formation history map of the Large Magellanic Cloud to study the sites of the eight smallest (and presumably youngest) supernova remnants in the Cloud: SN 1987A, N158A, N49, and N63A (core collapse remnants), 0509-67.5, 0519-69.0, N103B, and DEM L71 (Type Ia remnants). The local star formation histories provide unique insights into the nature of the supernova progenitors, which we compare with the properties of the supernova explosions derived from the remnants themselves and from supernova light echoes. We find that all the core collapse supernovae that we have studied are ass…
Stars in the mass range from 8 to 10 solar masses are expected to produce one of two types of supernovae (SNe), either electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe) or core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), depending on their previous evolution. Either of the associated progenitors retain extended and massive hydrogen-rich envelopes, the observables of these SNe are, therefore, expected to be similar. In this study we explore the differences in these two types of SNe. Specifically, we investigate three different progenitor models: a solar-metallicity ECSN progenitor with an initial mass of 8.8 solar masses, …
We investigate the contribution of different formation scenarios for type Ia supernovae in elliptical galaxies. The single degenerate scenario (a white dwarf accreting from a late main sequence or red giant companion) is tested against the double degenerate scenario (the spiral-in and merging of two white dwarfs through the emission of gravitational wave radiation). We use a population number synthesis code incorporating the latest physical results in binary evolution, and allowing to differentiate between certain physical scenarios (e.g. description of common envelope evolution) and evolution…
We present high-resolution, full-star simulations of the post-ignition phase of Type Ia supernovae using the compressible hydrodynamics code Castro. Initial conditions, including the turbulent velocity field and ignition site, are imported directly from a simulation of the last few hours of presupernova convection using a low Mach number code, Maestro. Adaptive mesh refinement allows the initial burning front to be modeled with an effective resolution of 36,864^3 zones (~136 m/zone). The initial rise and expansion of the deflagration front are tracked until burning reaches the star's edge and …
We present a study of the properties of the host galaxies of unusual transient objects of two types, both being sub-luminous compared with the major classes of supernovae. Those of one type exhibit unusually strong calcium features, and have been termed 'Ca-rich'. Those of the second type, with SN2002cx as the prototype and SN2008ha as the most extreme example to date, have some properties in common with the first, but show typically lower ejecta velocities, and different early spectra. We confirm important differences in the environments of the two types, with the Ca-rich transients preferent…
I propose a scenario where the majority of the progenitors of type IIb supernovae (SNe IIb) lose most of their hydrogen-rich envelope during a grazing envelope evolution (GEE). In the GEE the orbital radius of the binary system is about equal to the radius of the giant star, and the more compact companion accretes mass through an accretion disk. The accretion disk is assumed to launch two opposite jets that efficiently remove gas from the envelope along the orbit of the companion. The efficient envelope removal by jets prevents the binary system from entering a common envelope evolution, at le…
We present a characterization of the new Volans-Carina Association (VCA) of stars near the Galactic plane (b ~ -10 deg) at a distance of ~75-100 pc, previously identified as group 30 by Oh et al. (2017). We compile a list of 19 likely members from Gaia DR2 with spectral types B8-M2, and 46 additional candidate members from Gaia DR2, 2MASS and AllWISE with spectral types A0-M9 that require further follow-up for confirmation. We find an isochronal age of $89_{-7}^{+5}$ Myr based on MIST isochrones calibrated with Pleiades members. This new association of stars is slightly younger than the Pleiad…
A recent analysis of supernova (SN) 2002bj revealed that it was an apparently unique type Ib SN. It showed a high peak luminosity, with absolute magnitude M_R -18.5, but an extremely fast-evolving light curve. It had a rise time of <7 days followed by a decline of 0.25 mag per day in B-band, and showed evidence for very low mass of ejecta (<0.15 M_Sun). Here we discuss two additional historical events, SN 1885A and SN 1939B, showing similarly fast light curves and low ejected masses. We discuss the low mass of ejecta inferred from our analysis of the SN 1885A remnant in M31, and present for th…
The progenitors of Type IIP supernovae (SNe) are known to be red supergiants, but their properties are not well determined. We employ hydrodynamical modelling to investigate the explosion characteristics of eight Type IIP supernovae, and the properties of their progenitor stars. We create evolutionary models using the {\sc MESA} stellar evolution code, explode these models, and simulate the optical lightcurves using the {\sc STELLA} code. We fit the optical lightcurves, Fe II 5169Å velocity, and photospheric velocity, to the observational data. Recent research has suggested that the progenitor…
We investigate the neutrino-process in an energetic Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) and resultant productions of the light elements including boron and its stable isotopes. SN Ic is a very unique boron source because it can produce boron through not only spallation reactions as discussed in Nakamura & Shigeyama (2004) but also the neutrino-process. The neutrino-process is considered to occur in core-collapse supernovae and previous studies were limited to Type II supernovae (SNe II). Although the progenitor star of an SN Ic does not posses a He envelope so that 7Li production via the neutrino-proces…

We investigate $^{60}$Fe in massive stars and core-collapse supernovae focussing on uncertainties that influence its production in 15, 20 and 25 $M_\odot$ stars at solar metallicity. We find that the $^{60}$Fe yield is a monotonic increasing function of the uncertain $^{59}$Fe$(n,γ)^{60}$Fe cross section and that a factor of 10 reduction in the reaction rate results in a factor 8-10 reduction in the $^{60}$Fe yield; while a factor of 10 increase in the rate increases the yield by a factor 4-7. We find that none of the 189 simulations we have performed are consistent with a core-collapse supern…
Two formation scenarios are investigated for type Ia supernovae in elliptical galaxies: the single degenerate scenario (a white dwarf reaching the Chandrasekhar limit through accretion of matter transferred from its companion star in a binary) and the double degenerate scenario (the inspiraling and merging of two white dwarfs in a binary as a result of the emission of gravitational wave radiation). A population number synthesis code is used, which includes the latest physical results in binary evolution and allows to differentiate between certain physical scenarios (such as the description of …
Betelgeuse, a nearby red supergiant, is a runaway star with a powerful stellar wind that drives a bow shock into its surroundings. This picture has been challenged by the discovery of a dense and almost static shell that is three times closer to the star than the bow shock and has been decelerated by some external force. The two physically distinct structures cannot both be formed by the hydrodynamic interaction of the wind with the interstellar medium. Here we report that a model in which Betelgeuse's wind is photoionized by radiation from external sources can explain the static shell without…
We use 3D hydrodynamical models to investigate the effects of massive star feedback from winds and supernovae on inhomogeneous molecular material left over from the formation of a massive stellar cluster. We simulate the interaction of the mechanical energy input from a cluster with 3 O-stars into a giant molecular cloud (GMC) clump containing 3240 solar masses of molecular material within a 4 pc radius. The cluster wind blows out of the molecular clump along low-density channels, into which denser clump material is entrained. We find that the densest molecular regions are surprisingly resista…
The rate of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in a galaxy depends not only on stellar mass, but also on star formation history. Here we show that two simple observational quantities ($g-r$ or $u-r$ host galaxy color, and $r$-band luminosity), coupled with an assumed delay time distribution (the rate of SNe Ia as a function of time for an instantaneous burst of star formation), are sufficient to accurately determine a galaxy's SN Ia rate, with very little sensitivity to the precise details of the star formation history. Using this result, we compare observed and predicted color distributions of SN Ia…
Based on color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) from the Hubble Space Telescope Hubble Tarantula Treasury Project (HTTP) survey, we present the star formation history (SFH) of Hodge~301, the oldest star cluster in the Tarantula Nebula. The HTTP photometry extends faint enough to reach, for the first time, the cluster pre-main sequence (PMS) turn-on, where the PMS joins the main sequence. Using the location of this feature, along with synthetic CMDs generated with the latest PARSEC models, we find that Hodge~301 is older than previously thought, with an age between 26.5 and 31.5 Myr. From this age, we…
Context. The companions of the exploding carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) for producing type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are still not conclusively confirmed. A red-giant (RG) star has been suggested to be the mass donor of the exploding WD, named as the symbiotic channel. However, previous studies on the this channel gave a relatively low rate of SNe Ia. Aims. We aim to systematically investigate the parameter space, Galactic rates and delay time distributions of SNe Ia from the symbiotic channel by employing a revised mass-transfer prescription. Methods. We adopted an integrated mass-transfer …
Despite their use as cosmological distance indicators and their importance in the chemical evolution of galaxies, the unequivocal identification of the progenitor systems and explosion mechanism of normal type Ia supernova (SN Ia) remains elusive. The leading hypothesis is that such a supernova is a thermonuclear explosion of a carbon-oxygen white dwarf, but the exact explosion mechanism is still a matter of debate. Observation of a galactic SN Ia would be of immense value in answering the many open questions related to these events. One potentially useful source of information about the explo…
Recent studies of low redshift type Ia supernovae (SNIa) indicate that half explode from less than Chandrasekhar mass white dwarfs, implying ignition must proceed from something besides the canonical criticality of Chandrasekhar mass SNIa progenitors. We show that $1-100$ PeV mass asymmetric dark matter, with imminently detectable nucleon scattering interactions, can accumulate to the point of self-gravitation in a white dwarf and collapse, shedding gravitational potential energy by scattering off nuclei, thereby heating the white dwarf and igniting the flame front that precedes SNIa. We combi…
Here we present new - and, nevertheless, last - mid-infrared (mid-IR) data for supernovae (SNe) based on measurements with the Spitzer Space Telescope. Comparing our recent 3.6 and 4.5 $μ$m photometry with previously published mid-IR and further multiwavelength datasets, we were able to draw some conclusions about the origin and heating mechanism of the dust in these SNe or in their environments, as well as on possible connection with circumstellar matter (CSM) originating from pre-explosion mass-loss events in the progenitor stars. We also present new results regarding both certain SN classes…
We present a homogeneous chemical abundance analysis of five of the most metal-poor stars in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We analyze new and archival high resolution spectroscopy from Magellan/MIKE and VLT/UVES and determine stellar parameters and abundances in a consistent way for each star. Two of the stars in our sample, at [Fe/H] = -3.5 and [Fe/H] = -3.8, are new discoveries from our Ca K survey of Sculptor, while the other three were known in the literature. We confirm that Scl 07-50 is the lowest metallicity star identified in an external galaxy, at [Fe/H] = -4.1. The two most m…
Massive stars, which terminate their evolution as core collapse supernovae, are theoretically predicted to eject more than 1E-5 solar masses of the radioisotope 60Fe. If such an event occurs sufficiently close to our solar system, traces of the supernova debris could be deposited on Earth. Herein, we report a time resolved 60Fe signal residing, at least partially, in a biogenic reservoir. Using accelerator mass spectrometry, this signal was found through the direct detection of live 60Fe atoms contained within secondary iron oxides, among which are magnetofossils, the fossilized chains of magn…
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can be used as the standard candlelight to determine the cosmological distances because they are thought to have a uniform fuel amount. Recent observations of several overluminous SNe Ia suggest that the white dwarf masses at supernova explosion may significantly exceed the canonical Chandrasekhar mass limit. These massive white dwarfs may be supported by rapid differential rotation. Based on single degenerate model and the assumption that the white dwarf would differentially rotate when the accretion rate $\dot{M}>3\times10^{-7}M_{\odot}\rm yr^{-1}$, we have calcul…
Thermonuclear supernovae (SNe), a subset of which are the highly important SNe Type\,Ia, remain one of the more poorly understood phenomena known to modern astrophysics. In recent years, the single degenerate helium (He) donor channel, where a white dwarf star (WD) accretes He-rich matter from a hydrogen-depleted companion, has emerged as a promising candidate progenitor scenario for these events. An unresolved question in this scenario is the fate of the companion star, which would be evident as a runaway hot subdwarf (He sdO/B) in the aftermath of the SN event. Previous studies have shown th…
The origin of the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) is still uncertain. The core-degenerate (CD) scenario has been proposed as an alternative way for the production of SNe Ia. In this scenario, SNe Ia are formed at the final stage of common-envelope evolution from a merger of a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (CO WD) with the CO core of an asymptotic giant branch companion. However, the birthrates of SNe Ia from this scenario are still not well determined. In this work, we performed a detailed investigation on the CD scenario based on a binary population synthesis approach. The SN Ia delay …
Over its lifespan, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will monitor millions of supernovae (SNe) from explosion to oblivion, yielding an unprecedented ugrizy photometric dataset on their late-time evolution. Here, we show that the photometric evolution of Type Ibc SNe can be used to constrain numerous properties of their ejecta, without the need for expensive spectroscopic observations. Using radiative-transfer simulations for explosions of He-star progenitors of different initial masses, we show that the g-band filter follows primarily the strength of the FeII…
There is observational evidence of a dearth in core-collapse supernova (ccSN) explosions from stars with zero age main sequence (ZAMS) mass M_0~17-30 Msol, referred to as the 'red supergiant problem'. However, simulations now predict that above 20Msol we should indeed only expect stars within certain pockets of M_0 to produce a visible SN explosion. Validating these predictions requires large numbers of ccSNe of different types with measured M_0, which is challenging. In this paper we explore the reliability of using host galaxy emission lines and the Halpha equivalent width to constrain the a…
