We study continuous-time quantum walks on normal Cayley graphs of certain non-abelian groups, called extraspecial groups. By applying general results for graphs in association schemes we determine the precise conditions for perfect state transfer and fractional revival, and use partial spreads to construct graphs on extraspecial $2$-groups admitting these various phenomena. Lastly, we use a result of Ada Chan to show that there is no normal Cayley graph of an extraspecial group that admits instantaneous uniform mixing.
In 1985, Arjeh Cohen and Jacques Tits proved the existence of a 4-cycle-free 2-fold cover of the hypercube. This Cohen-Tits cover is closely related to the signed adjacency matrix that Hao Huang used last year in his proof of the Sensitivity Conjecture. Terence Tao observed that Huang's signed adjacency matrix can be understood by lifting functions on an elementary abelian 2-group to functions on a central extension. Inspired by Tao's observation, we generalize the Cohen-Tits cover by constructing, as Cayley graphs for extraspecial p-groups, two infinite families of 4-cycle-free p-fold covers …
We introduce the notion of a symmetric basis of a vector space equipped with a quadratic form, and provide a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence to such a basis. Symmetric bases are then used to study Cayley graphs of certain extraspecial 2-groups of order 2^{2r+1} (r\geq 1), which are further shown to be normal Cayley graphs and 2-arc-transitive covers of 2r-dimensional hypercubes.
We provide a new derivation of the well-known generating function counting the number of walks on a regular tree that start and end at the same vertex, and more generally, a generating function for the number of walks that end at a vertex a distance i from the start vertex. These formulas seem to be very old, and go back, in an equivalent form, at least to Harry Kesten's work on symmetric random walks on groups from 1959, and in the present form to Brendan McKay (1983).
We show that the hitting time of the discrete quantum walk on a symmetric Cayley graph over $\Z_2^n $ from a vertex to its antipodal is polynomial in degree of the graph. We prove that returning time of quantum walk on a symmetric Cayley graph over $\Z_2^n $ is polynomial and the probability to hit is almost one. To prove it, we give a new estimation of Kravchuk coefficients. We give an example of a probabilistic polynomial algorithm that finds an antipodal vertex in symmetric Cayley graphs.
In this paper, we determine an explicit formula for the number of walks in $X_n = \textsf{Cay}(\mathbb{Z}_n,\mathbb{U}_n)$, the unitary Cayley Graphs of order $n$, between any pair of its vertices. With this result, we give the number of representations of a fixed residue class $\bmod{}n$ as the sum of $k$ units of $\mathbb{Z}_n$.
We present a simple mechanism, which can be randomised, for constructing sparse $3$-uniform hypergraphs with strong expansion properties. These hypergraphs are constructed using Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_2^t$ and have vertex degree which is polylogarithmic in the number of vertices. Their expansion properties, which are derived from the underlying Cayley graphs, include analogues of vertex and edge expansion in graphs, rapid mixing of the random walk on the edges of the skeleton graph, uniform distribution of edges on large vertex subsets and the geometric overlap property.
We provide new examples of Cayley graphs on which the quantum walks reach uniform mixing. Our first result is a complete characterization of all $2(d+2)$-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_3^d$ that admit uniform mixing at time $2π/9$. Our second result shows that for every integer $k\ge 3$, we can construct Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_q^d$ that admit uniform mixing at time $2π/q^k$, where $q=3, 4$. We also find the first family of irregular graphs, the Cartesian powers of the star $K_{1,3}$, that admit uniform mixing.
In this note we show that percolation on non-amenable Cayley graphs of high girth has a phase of non-uniqueness, i.e., p_c < p_u. Furthermore, we show that percolation and self-avoiding walk on such graphs have mean-field critical exponents. In particular, the self-avoiding walk has positive speed.
Let $Γ(G,S)$ denote the Cayley graph of a group $G$ with respect to a set $S \subset G$. In this paper, we analyze the spectral properties of the Cayley graphs $\mathcal{T}_{m,n,k} = Γ(\mathbb{Z}_m \ltimes_k \mathbb{Z}_n, \{(\pm 1,0),(0,\pm 1)\})$, where $m,n \geq 3$ and $k^m \equiv 1 \pmod{n}$. We show that the adjacency matrix of $\mathcal{T}_{m,n,k}$, upto relabeling, is a block circulant matrix, and we also obtain an explicit description of these blocks. By extending a result due to Walker-Mieghem to Hermitian matrices, we show that $\mathcal{T}_{m,n,k}$ is not Ramanujan, when either $m > …
Given a finite simple graph $\cG$ with $n$ vertices, we can construct the Cayley graph on the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by the edges of $\cG$, interpreted as transpositions. We show that, if $\cG$ is complete multipartite, the eigenvalues of the Laplacian of $\Cay(\cG)$ have a simple expression in terms of the irreducible characters of transpositions, and of the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. As a consequence we can prove that the Laplacians of $\cG$ and of $\Cay(\cG)$ have the same first nontrivial eigenvalue. This is equivalent to saying that Aldous's conjecture, asserting that th…
In this paper we find a complete characterization of plateaued Boolean functions in terms of the associated Cayley graphs. Precisely, we show that a Boolean function $f$ is $s$-plateaued (of weight $=2^{(n+s-2)/2}$) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is a complete bipartite graph between the support of $f$ and its complement (hence the graph is strongly regular of parameters $e=0,d=2^{(n+s-2)/2}$). Moreover, a Boolean function $f$ is $s$-plateaued (of weight $\neq 2^{(n+s-2)/2}$) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is strongly $3$-walk-regular (and also strongly $\ell$-walk-regu…
A vertex triple $(u,v,w)$ of a graph is called a $2$-geodesic if $v$ is adjacent to both $u$ and $w$ and $u$ is not adjacent to $w$. A graph is said to be $2$-geodesic transitive if its automorphism group is transitive on the set of $2$-geodesics. In this paper, a complete classification of $2$-geodesic transitive graphs of order $p^n$ is given for each prime $p$ and $n\leq 3$. It turns out that all such graphs consist of three small graphs: the complete bipartite graph $K_{4,4}$ of order $8$, the Schläfli graph of order $27$ and its complement, and fourteen infinite families: the cycles $C_p,…

We characterize a close connection between the continuous-time quantum-walk model and a discrete-time quantum-walk version, based on the staggered model with Hamiltonians in a class of Cayley graphs, which can be considered as a discretization of continuous-time quantum walks. This connection provides examples of perfect state transfer and instantaneous uniform mixing in the staggered model. On the other hand, we provide some more examples of perfect state transfer and instantaneous uniform mixing in the staggered model that cannot be reproduced by the continuous-time model.
We prove a general large sieve statement in the context of random walks on subgraphs of a given graph. This can be seen as a generalization of previously known results where one performs a random walk on a group enjoying a strong spectral gap property. In such a context the point is to exhibit a strong uniform expansion property for a suitable family of Cayley graphs on quotients. In our combinatorial approach, this is replaced by a result of Alon--Roichman about expanding properties of random Cayley graphs. Applying the general setting we show e.g., that with high probability (in a strong exp…
The connective constant $μ(G)$ of an infinite transitive graph $G$ is the exponential growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks from a given origin. In earlier work of Grimmett and Li, a locality theorem was proved for connective constants, namely, that the connective constants of two graphs are close in value whenever the graphs agree on a large ball around the origin. A condition of the theorem was that the graphs support so-called 'unimodular graph height functions'. When the graphs are Cayley graphs of infinite, finitely generated groups, there is a special type of unimodular graph …
Let $\mathcal H$ be a finite connected undirected graph and $\mathcal H_{walk}$ be the graph of bi-infinite walks on $\mathcal H$; two such walks $\{x_i\}_{i\in \mathbb Z}$ and $\{y_i\}_{i \in \mathbb Z}$ are said to be adjacent if $x_i$ is adjacent to $y_i$ for all $i \in \mathbb Z$. We consider the question: Given a graph $\mathcal H$ when is the diameter (with respect to the graph metric) of $\mathcal H_{walk}$ finite? Such questions arise while studying mixing properties of hom-shifts (shift spaces which arise as the space of graph homomorphisms from the Cayley graph of $\mathbb Z^d$ with …
A self-avoiding walk (SAW) is a path on a graph that visits each vertex at most once. The mean square displacement of an $n$-step SAW is the expected value of the square of the distance between the ending point and the starting point of an $n$-step SAW, where the expectation is taken with respect to the uniform measure on $n$-step SAWs starting from a fixed vertex. It is conjectured that the mean square displacement of an $n$-step SAW is asymptotically $n^{2ν}$, where $ν$ is a constant. Computing the exact values of the exponent $ν$ on various graphs has been a challenging problem in mathemati…
The total-variation cutoff phenomenon has been conjectured to hold for simple random walk on all transitive expanders. However, very little is actually known regarding this conjecture, and cutoff on sparse graphs in general. In this paper we establish total-variation cutoff for simple random walk on Ramanujan complexes of type $\widetilde{A}_{d}$ $(d\geq1)$. As a result, we obtain explicit generators for the finite classical groups $\mathrm{PGL}_{n}(\mathbb{F}_{q})$ for which the associated Cayley graphs exhibit total-variation cutoff.
The connective constant $μ(G)$ of a quasi-transitive graph $G$ is the asymptotic growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks (SAWs) on $G$ from a given starting vertex. We survey several aspects of the relationship between the connective constant and the underlying graph $G$. $\bullet$ We present upper and lower bounds for $μ$ in terms of the vertex-degree and girth of a transitive graph. $\bullet$ We discuss the question of whether $μ\geϕ$ for transitive cubic graphs (where $ϕ$ denotes the golden mean), and we introduce the Fisher transformation for SAWs (that is, the replacement of vert…
The connective constant $μ(G)$ of an infinite transitive graph $G$ is the exponential growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks from a given origin. The relationship between connective constants and amenability is explored in the current work. Various properties of connective constants depend on the existence of so-called 'graph height functions', namely: (i) whether $μ(G)$ is a local function on certain graphs derived from $G$, (ii) the equality of $μ(G)$ and the asymptotic growth rate of bridges, and (iii) whether there exists a terminating algorithm for approximating $μ(G)$ to a give…
Symbolic dynamics is partly the study of walks in a directed graph. By a walk, here we mean a morphism to the graph from the Cayley graph of the monoid of non-negative integers. Sets of these walks are also important in other areas, such as stochastic processes, automata, combinatorial group theory, $C^*$-algebras, etc. We put a Quillen model structure on the category of directed graphs, for which the weak equivalences are those graph morphisms which induce bijections on the set of walks. We determine the resulting homotopy category. We also introduce a "finite-level" homotopy category which r…
We construct explicit generating sets S_n and \tilde S_n of the for the alternating and the symmetric groups, which turn the Cayley graphs C(Alt(n), S_n) and C(Sym(n), \tilde S_n) into a family of bounded degree expanders for all n. This answers affirmatively an old question which has been asked many times in the literature. These expanders have many applications in the theory of random walks on groups, card shuffling and other areas.
Starting from a sequence regarded as a walk through some set of values, we consider the associated loop-erased walk as a sequence of directed edges, with an edge from $i$ to $j$ if the loop erased walk makes a step from $i$ to $j$. We introduce a coloring of these edges by painting edges with a fixed color as long as the walk does not loop back on itself, then switching to a new color whenever a loop is erased, with each new color distinct from all previous colors. The pattern of colors along the edges of the loop-erased walk then displays stretches of consecutive steps of the walk left untouc…
The connective constant $μ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the exponential growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks starting at a given vertex. We investigate the validity of the inequality $μ\ge ϕ$ for infinite, transitive, simple, cubic graphs, where $ϕ:= \frac12(1+\sqrt 5)$ is the golden mean. The inequality is proved for several families of graphs including (i) Cayley graphs of infinite groups with three generators and strictly positive first Betti number, (ii) infinite, transitive, topologically locally finite (TLF) planar, cubic graphs, and (iii) cubic Cayley graphs with two ends. Bounds f…
The connective constant $μ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the asymptotic growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks on $G$ from a given starting vertex. We survey three aspects of the dependence of the connective constant on the underlying graph $G$. Firstly, when $G$ is cubic, we study the effect on $μ(G)$ of the Fisher transformation (that is, the replacement of vertices by triangles). Secondly, we discuss upper and lower bounds for $μ(G)$ when $G$ is regular. Thirdly, we present strict inequalities for the connective constants $μ(G)$ of vertex-transitive graphs $G$, as $G$ varies. As a consequ…
Let T_1,..., T_d be homogeneous trees with degrees q_1+1,..., q_d+1>=3, respectively. For each tree, let h:T_j->Z be the Busemann function with respect to a fixed boundary point (end). Its level sets are the horocycles. The horocyclic product of T_1,...,T_d is the graph DL(q_1,...,q_d) consisting of all d-tuples x_1...x_d in T_1x...xT_d with h(x_1)+...+h(x_d)=0, equipped with a natural neighbourhood relation. In the present paper, we explore the geometric, algebraic, analytic and probabilistic properties of these graphs and their isometry groups. If d=2 and q_1=q_2=q then we obtain a Cayley gr…
Let $G$ be a quasi-transitive, locally finite, connected graph rooted at a vertex $o$, and let $c_n(o)$ be the number of self-avoiding walks of length $n$ on $G$ starting at $o$. We show that if $G$ has only thin ends, then the generating function $F_{\mathrm{SAW},o}(z)=\sum_{n \geq 0} c_n(o) z^n$ is an algebraic function. In particular, the connective constant of such a graph is an algebraic number. If $G$ is deterministically edge labelled, that is, every (directed) edge carries a label such that any two edges starting at the same vertex have different labels, then the set of all words which…
