Lens space surgeries on A'Campo's divide knots

It is proved that every knot in the major subfamilies of J. Berge's lens space surgery (i.e., knots yielding a lens space by Dehn surgery) is presented by an L-shaped (real) plane curve as a "divide knot" defined by N. A'Campo in the context of singularity theory of complex curves. For each knot given by Berge's parameters, the corresponding plane curve is constructed. The surgery coefficients are also considered. Such presentations support us to study each knot itself, and the relationship among the knots in the set of lens space surgeries.

Knots and links of complex tangents

It is shown that every knot or link is the set of complex tangents of a 3-sphere smoothly embedded in the three-dimensional complex space. We show in fact that a one-dimensional submanifold of a closed orientable 3-manifold can be realised as the set of complex tangents of a smooth embedding of the 3-manifold into the three-dimensional complex space if and only if it represents the trivial integral homology class in the 3-manifold. The proof involves a new application of singularity theory of differentiable maps.

Topology of spaces of knots in dimension 3

This paper is a computation of the homotopy type of K, the space of long knots in R^3, the same space of knots studied by Vassiliev via singularity theory. Each component of K corresponds to an isotopy class of long knot, and we `enumerate' the components via the companionship trees associated to the knot. The knots with the simplest companionship trees are: the unknot, torus knots, and hyperbolic knots. The homotopy-type of these components of K were computed by Hatcher. The KW Equations and the Nahm Pole Boundary Condition with Knots

It is conjectured that the coefficients of the Jones polynomial can be computed by counting solutions of the KW equations on a four-dimensional half-space, with certain boundary conditions that depend on a knot. The boundary conditions are defined by a "Nahm pole" away from the knot with a further singularity along the knot. Unstable Vassiliev Theory

We construct an inverse system of unstable Vassiliev spectral sequences on the spaces of plumbers' knots, which model the homotopy type of the space of long knots, and show that the limit of these sequences contains the finite type invariants in their usual complexity. Utilizing the cell structure on the discriminant of the spaces of plumbers curves, we extend the notion of Vassiliev derivative to all singularity types of plumbers' curves.

The Nahm Pole Boundary Condition

The Nahm pole boundary condition for certain gauge theory equations in four and five dimensions is defined by requiring that a solution should have a specified singularity along the boundary. In the present paper, we show that this boundary condition is elliptic and has regularity properties analogous to more standard elliptic boundary conditions. We also establish a uniqueness theorem for the solution of the relevant equations on a half-space with Nahm pole boundary conditions.
