The gamma-ray emitting galaxy SBS 0846+513 has been classified as a Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 from its spectroscopy, and on that basis it was thought likely to have a small central black hole hosted in a spiral galaxy. But very few of the gamma-ray Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s have high-resolution imaging of their hosts, so it is unknown how those expectations hold up for the gamma-emitting class. We have observed this galaxy in the J-band with the Large Binocular Telescope's LUCI1 camera and the ARGOS adaptive optics system. We estimate its black hole mass to lie between $7.70 \leq \log \frac{\text{M}}{\text{M}_\odot} \leq 8.19$, using the correlation with bulge luminosity, or $7.96 \leq \log \frac{\text{M}}{\text{M}_\odot} \leq 8.16$ using the correlation with Sérsic index, putting its mass at the high end of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 range. These estimates are independent of the Broad Line Region viewing geometry and avoid underestimates due to looking down the jet axis. Its host shows evidence of a bulge + disc structure, both from two-dimensional modeling and isophote shape, in keeping with the expectations. Mergers and interactions appear to be common among the gamma-ray Narrow-Line Seyfert 1s, and we see some circumstantial evidence for companion galaxies or disturbed features in the host.
We present for the first time the timing and spectral analyses for a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy, SBS 1353+564, using \it{XMM-Newton} and \it{Swift} multi-band observations from 2007 to 2019. Our main results are as follows: 1) The temporal variability of SBS 1353+564 is random, while the hardness ratio is relatively constant over a time span of 13 years; 2) We find a prominent soft X-ray excess feature below 2 keV, which cannot be well described by a simple blackbody component; 3) After comparing the two most prevailing models for interpreting the origin of the soft X-ray excess, we find tha…
The discovery of $γ$-ray emission from some radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RLNLS1s) indicated the presence of a relativistic beamed jet in these objects. This immediately opened a new question about their parent population: is how do they look like when observed at large angles? The study of the parent population has provided important new insights on the physical properties of this fascinating class of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this work, I will review the most recent advances in the study of parent sources, and I will show the impact that a recent continuum survey carried …
We report the first results of a survey on 74 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) carried out in 2015 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 5 GHz in A-configuration. So far, this is the largest survey aimed to image the radio continuum of NLS1s. We produced radio maps in order to compare the general properties of three different samples of objects: radio-quiet NLS1s (RQNLS1s), steep-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (S-NLS1s), and flat-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (F-NLS1s). We find that the three classes correspond to different radio morphologies, with F-NLS1s being more compact, and RQN…
The [O III] $λλ$ 4959,5007 lines are a useful proxy to test the kinematic of the narrow-line region (NLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN). In AGN, and particularly in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) these lines often show few peculiar features, such as blue wings, often interpreted as outflowing component, and a shift $-$ typically toward lower wavelengths $-$ of the whole spectroscopic feature in some exceptional sources, the so-called blue outliers, which are often associated to strong winds. We investigated the incidence of these peculiarities in two samples of radio-emitting NLS1s, …
As hybrids of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies and blazars, γ-ray emitting NLS1s are important probes of jet physics in the high Eddington-ratio regime. Only very few of them are known to date; the majority of them below redshift z = 0.5. Here we present the identification of the γ-ray emitting AGN TXS 0943+105 (SDSS J094635.06+101706.1) as a high-redshift NLS1 galaxy. It turns out to be one of the radio-loudest NLS1s known, highly variable at all wavelengths, and shows widely extended radio emission at a (projected) > 100 kpc scale. It is a known strong γ-ray emitter with a luminous flar…
We analyze an optical data cube of the nuclear region of NGC 3621, taken with the integral field unit of the Gemini Multi-object Spectrograph. We found that the previously detected central line emission in this galaxy actually comes from a blob, located at a projected distance of 2.14" +/- 0.08" (70.1 +/- 2.6 pc) from the stellar nucleus. Only diffuse emission was detected in the rest of the field of view, with a deficit of emission at the position of the stellar nucleus. Diagnostic diagram analysis reveals that the off-centered emitting blob has a Seyfert 2 spectrum. We propose that the line-…
We report the discovery of a local convergence of a jet cross section in the quasi-stationary jet feature in the gamma-ray-emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) 1H 0323+342. The convergence site is located at approximately 7 mas (corresponding to the order of 100 pc in deprojection) from the central engine. We also found limb-brightened jet structures at both the upstream and downstream of the convergence site. We propose that the quasi-stationary feature showing the jet convergence and limb-brightening occurs as a consequence of recollimation shock in the relativistic jets. The quasi-s…
We present Keck/ESI long-slit spectroscopy of SBS 1421+511, a system consisting of a quasar at z = 0.276 and an extended source 3" northern to the quasar. The quasar shows a blue-skewed profile of Balmer broad emission lines, which can be well modeled as emissions from a circular disk with a blueshift velocity of ~1400 km/s. The blueshift is better interpreted as resulting from a recoiling active black hole than from a super-massive black hole binary, since the line profile almost kept steady over one decade in the quasar rest-frame. Alternative interpretations are possible as well, such as em…
The unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGN) predicts silicate emission features at 10 and 18 microns in type 1 AGN, and such features have now been observed in objects ranging from distant QSOs to nearby LINERs. More surprising, however, is the detection of silicate emission in a few type 2 AGN. By combining Gemini and Spitzer mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of NGC 2110, the closest known Seyfert 2 galaxy with silicate emission features, we can constrain the location of the silicate emitting region to within 32 pc of the nucleus. This is the strongest constraint yet on the size of …
We present a multi-frequency study of PKS J1222$+$0413 (4C$+$04.42), currently the highest redshift $γ$-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($γ$-NLS1). We assemble a broad spectral energy distribution (SED) including previously unpublished datasets: X-ray data obtained with the NuSTAR and Neil Gehrels Swift observatories; near-infrared, optical and UV spectroscopy obtained with VLT X-shooter; and multiband radio data from the Effelsberg telescope. These new observations are supplemented by archival data from the literature. We apply physical models to the broadband SED, parameterising the accre…
This article reviews our current understanding about $γ$-ray detected narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($γ$-NLSy1) galaxies. The detection with the Large Area Telescope onboard {\it Fermi}~Gamma-ray Space Telescope has provided the strongest evidence for the presence of closely aligned relativistic jet in these intriguing active galactic nuclei (AGN) and opened up a realm to explore the physical conditions needed to launch the jet in a different central engine and host galaxy environment than that is known for blazars. Promising results acquired from various multi-wavelength campaigns are converging to a…
The discovery of $γ$-ray emission from radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies has questioned the need for large black hole masses (> 10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$) to launch relativistic jets. We present near-infrared data of the $γ$-ray-emitting NLSy1 FBQS J1644+2619 that were collected using the camera CIRCE (Canarias InfraRed Camera Experiment) at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias to investigate the structural properties of its host galaxy and to infer the black hole mass. The 2D surface brightness profile is modelled by the combination of a nuclear and a bulge component with a Sérsic pro…
The detection of gamma-ray emission from narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1) has challenged the idea that large black hole (BH) masses ($\ge$10$^8$ M$_{\odot}$) are needed to launch relativistic jets. We present near-infrared imaging data of the gamma-ray-emitting NLSy1 PKS 1502+036 obtained with the Very Large Telescope. Its surface brightness profile, extending to $\sim$ 20 kpc, is well described by the combination of a nuclear component and a bulge with a Sersic index $n$ = 3.5, which is indicative of an elliptical galaxy. A circumnuclear structure observed near PKS 1502+036 may be the r…
A small fraction of Narrow Line Seyfert 1s (NLSy1s) are observed to be gamma-ray emitters. Understanding the properties of these sources is of interest since the majority of NLSy1s are very different from typical blazars. Here, we present a multi-frequency analysis of FBQS J1644+2619, one of the most recently discovered gamma-ray emitting NLSy1s. We analyse an ~80 ks XMM-Newton observation obtained in 2017, as well as quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength observations covering the radio - gamma-ray range. The spectral energy distribution of the source is similar to the other gamma-ray NLSy1s, co…
We present the results of X-ray spectral and timing analyses of the closest gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($γ$-NLS1) galaxy, 1H 0323+342. We use observations from a recent, simultaneous XMM-Newton/NuSTAR campaign. As in radio-quiet NLS1s, the spectrum reveals a soft excess at low energies ($\lesssim2$ keV) and reflection features such as a broad iron K emission line. We also find evidence of a hard excess at energies above $\sim35$ keV that is likely a consequence of jet emission. Our analysis shows that relativistic reflection is statistically required, and using a combination of m…
We report results from multi-epoch X-ray observations of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy ESO 362-G18 performed between November 2005 and June 2010. ESO 362-G18 generally exhibits the typical X-ray spectrum of type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). A disc-reflection component accounts for broad residuals in the iron K band and above 10~keV, as well as for a significant soft excess. From our best-fitting reflection model, we measure a black hole spin greater or equal to 0.92 at the 99.99 per cent confidence level. ESO 362-G18 is also (typically) mildly absorbed by a column of neutral gas. The absorber is v…
We present the analysis of an optical data cube of the central region of NGC 1448, obtained with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). Chandra X-ray data indicate that the active galactic nucleus (AGN) is not located at the apparent stellar nucleus of the galaxy, but at a projected distance of $1.75$ $\pm$ $0.22$ arcsec ($139 \pm 17$ pc). This is probably caused by the high interstellar extinction in the surroundings of the AGN, which corresponds to the true nucleus of the galaxy, as also proposed by previous studies. The morphology and classification of the optical line-emitting regio…
The detection of several radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies by the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope hints at the existence of a rare, new class of gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei with low black hole masses. Like flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs), their gamma-ray emission is thought to be produced via the external Compton mechanism whereby relativistic jet electrons upscatter a photon field external to the jet, e.g. from the accretion disc, broad line region (BLR) and dusty torus, to higher energies. Here we study the origin of the gamma-ray emission in the lowest-redsh…
The narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy PMN J0948+0022 is an archetype of gamma-ray-emitting NLS1s in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In this study, we investigate its radio structures using archival data obtained using the Karl G.~Jansky very large array (VLA) and the very long baseline array (VLBA). The new VLA images reveal an outermost radio emission separated by 9.1 arcsec. Its resolved structure and steep spectrum suggest a terminal shock in a radio lobe energized by the jet from the PMN J0948+0022 nucleus. This large-scale radio component is found at almost the same position angle as tha…
We studied the radio emission from four radio-loud and gamma-ray-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. The goal was to investigate whether a relativistic jet is operating at the source, and quantify its characteristics. We relied on the most systematic monitoring of such system in the cm and mm radio bands which is conducted with the Effelsberg 100 m and IRAM 30 m telescopes and covers the longest time-baselines and the most radio frequencies to date. We extract variability parameters and compute variability brightness temperatures and Doppler factors. The jet powers were computed from the ligh…
We investigated the detailed radio structure of the jet of 1H 0323+342 using high-resolution multi-frequency Very Long Baseline Array observations. This source is known as the nearest $γ$-ray emitting radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy. We discovered that the morphology of the inner jet is well characterized by a parabolic shape, indicating the jet being continuously collimated near the jet base. On the other hand, we found that the jet expands more rapidly at larger scales, resulting in a conical-like shape. The location of the "collimation break" is coincident with a bright quasi…
It has been often suggested that a tangible relation exists between relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the morphology of their host galaxies. In particular, relativistic jets may commonly be related to merging events. Here we present for the first time a detailed spectroscopic and morphological analysis of a Seyfert galaxy, SDSS J211852.96-073227.5, at $z = 0.26$. This source has previously been classified as a gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy. We re-observed it with the 6.5m Clay Telescope and these new, high-quality spectroscopic data have revealed that it i…
We report on radio-to-gamma-ray observations during 2011 May-September of PMN J0948+0022, the first narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxy detected in gamma-rays by Fermi-LAT. Strong variability was observed in gamma-rays, with two flaring periods peaking on 2011 June 20 and July 28. The variability observed in optical and near-infrared seems to have no counterpart in gamma-rays. This different behaviour could be related to a bending and inhomogeneous jet or a turbulent extreme multi-cell scenario. The radio spectra showed a variability pattern typical of relativistic jets. The XMM spectrum show…
We use high spectral resolution (R > 8000) data covering 3800-13000Å to study the physical conditions of the broad line region (BLR) of nine nearby Seyfert 1 galaxies. Up to six broad HI lines are present in each spectrum. A comparison - for the first time using simultaneous optical to near-infrared observations - to photoionisation calculations with our devised simple scheme yields the extinction to the BLR at the same time as determining the density and photon flux, and hence distance from the nucleus, of the emitting gas. This points to a typical density for the HI emitting gas of 10$^{11}$…
We study the radio properties at 1.4 GHz of Seyfert galaxies with strong forbidden high-ionization lines (FHILs), selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey - a large-sized sample containing nearly equal proportion of diverse range of Seyfert galaxies showing similar redshift distributions compiled by Gelbord et al. (2009) using the Very Large Array survey images. The radio detection rate is low, 49%, which is lower than the detection rate of several other known Seyfert galaxy samples. These galaxies show low star formation rates and the radio emission is dominated by the active nucleus with $…
What triggers collimated relativistic outflows or jets, from the centers of galaxies remains a fundamental question in astrophysics. The merging of two galaxies has been proposed to realize the conditions to successfully launch and drive such jets into the intergalactic medium. However, evidences for the operation of this mechanism are scarce. Here we report the first unambiguous detection of an ongoing merger of a narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy, TXS 2116$-$077, hosting a closely aligned, $γ$-ray emitting relativistic jet with a Seyfert 2 galaxy at a separation of $\sim$12 kpc, using the observa…
Massive outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) are widely recognised to play a key role in the evolution of galaxies, heating the ambient gas, expelling it from the nuclear regions, and thereby affecting the star formation histories of the galaxy bulges. It has been proposed that the powerful jets of relativistic particles launched by some AGN can both accelerate and heat the molecular gas, which often dominates the mass budgets of the outflows. However, clear evidence for this mechanism in the form of detailed associations between the molecular gas kinematics and features in the radi…
The first similarities between peaked sources (PS) and narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies were noticed already twenty years ago. Nowadays, it is known that several sources can share both classifications, and that part of the parent population of $γ$-ray emitting NLS1s could be hiding among PS. In this brief review, we describe how and why this orientation-based unification was developed. We also show how the recent discovery of absorbed radio jets in NLS1s, basically invisible at frequencies below 10 GHz, could impact our knowledge of PS and, in particular, render the widely used radio-loud…
As part of the TANAMI multiwavelength progam, we discuss new X-ray observations of the $γ$-ray and radio-loud Narrow Line Seyfert galaxy ($γ$-NLS1) PKS 2004-447. The active galaxy is a member of a small sample of radio-loud NLS1s detected in $γ$-rays by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. It is the radio-loudest and only southern-hemisphere source in this sample. We present results from our X-ray monitoring program comprised of Swift snapshot observations from 2012 through 2014 and two new X-ray observations with XMM-Newton in 2012. We analyze the X-ray spectrum and variability of this peculiar so…
The recent discovery by Fermi/LAT of high-energy (E>100 MeV) gamma rays from Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (NLS1s) made evident the existence of a third class of gamma-ray emitting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), after blazars and radio galaxies. It is now possible to study a rather unexplored range of low masses (10^6-8 Msun) and high accretion rates (up to the Eddington limit) of AGN with relativistic jets. A comparison with the jet emission from Galactic compact objects shows some striking similarities, indicating that NLS1s are the low-mass counterpart of blazars as neutron stars are the lo…
We present spectroscopy of emission lines for 81 Seyfert 1 and 104 Seyfert 2 galaxies in the IRAS 12$μ$m galaxy sample. We analyzed the emission-line luminosity functions, reddening, and other gas diagnostics. The narrow-line regions (NLR) of Sy1 and 2 galaxies do not significantly differ from each other in most of these diagnostics. Combining the H$α$/H$β$ ratio with a new reddening indicator-the [SII]6720/[OII]3727 ratio, we find the average $E(B-V)=0.49\pm0.35$ for Sy1s and $0.52\pm0.26$ for Sy2s. The NLR of Sy1 galaxies has only marginally higher ionization than the Sy2s. Our sample includ…
A large reverberation mapping study of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 has yielded emission-line lags for Hbeta 4861 and He II 4686 and a central black hole mass measurement of about 10 million solar masses, consistent with previous measurements. A very low level of variability during the monitoring campaign precluded meeting our original goal of recovering velocity-delay maps from the data, but with the new Hbeta measurement, NGC 7469 is no longer an outlier in the relationship between the size of the Hbeta-emitting broad-line region and the AGN luminosity. It was necessary to detrend the conti…
We present four radio-loud NLS1 galaxies with extreme emission-line shifts, indicating radial outflow velocities of the ionized gas of up to 2450 km/s, above the escape velocity of the host galaxies. The forbidden lines show strong broadening, up to 2270 km/s. An ionization stratification (higher line shift at higher ionization potential) implies that we see a large-scale outflow rather than single, localized jet-cloud interactions. Similarly, the paucity of zero-velocity [OIII]$λ$5007 emitting gas implies the absence of a second narrow-line region (NLR) component at rest, and therefore a larg…
We present near--infrared (NIR) imaging of FBQS J164442.5+261913, one of the few $γ$--ray emitting Narrow Line Seyfert 1 ($γ-$NLSy1) galaxies detected at high significance level by $Fermi$--LAT. This study is the first morphological analysis performed of this source and the third performed of this class of objects. Conducting a detailed two--dimensional modeling of its surface brightness distribution and analysing its $J-K_s$ colour gradients, we find that FBQS J164442.5+261913 is statistically most likely hosted by a barred lenticular galaxy (SB0). We find evidence that the bulge in the host …
Indirectly resolving the line-emitting gas regions in distant Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) requires both high-resolution photometry and spectroscopy (i.e. through reverberation mapping). Emission in AGN originates on widely different scales; the broad-line region (BLR) has a typical radius less than a few parsec, the narrow-line region (NLR) extends out to hundreds of parsecs. But emission also appears on large scales from heated nebulae in the host galaxies (tenths of kpc). We propose a novel, data-driven method based on correlations between emission-line fluxes to identify which of the emiss…
The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 possesses a prominent nuclear starburst ring and a luminous active galactic nucleus (AGN). Evidence of an outflow in the innermost nuclear region has been found in previous works. We detect the ionized gas outflow on a larger scale in the galaxy using the archival VLT/MUSE and {\em Chandra} observations. The optical emission lines are modeled using two Gaussian components, and a non-parametric approach is applied to measure the kinematics of [O III] and $\rm Hα$ emitting gas. Line ratio diagnostics and spatially resolved maps are derived to examine the origin of t…
Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are active galactic nuclei (AGN) believed to be in the early stages of their evolution. A fraction of them have been found to host relativistic jets. Due to the lack of large-scale diffuse radio emission they are believed to be experiencing one of their first activity cycles, and can offer us an opportunity to study the early evolution of more powerful AGN, such as radio galaxies and flat-spectrum radio quasars. Recently, a group of intriguing jetted NLS1s was discovered: based on high radio frequency data they host relativistic jets, but in the JVLA obser…

We report the results of reverberation mapping three bright Seyfert galaxies, Mrk 79, NGC 3227, and Mrk 841, from a campaign conducted from December 2016 to May 2017 with the Wyoming Infrared Observatory (WIRO) 2.3-meter telescope. All three of these targets have shown asymmetric broad H$β$ emission lines in the past, although their emission lines were relatively symmetric during our observations. We measured Hβ time lags for all three targets and estimated masses of their black holes -- for the first time in the case of Mrk 841. For Mrk 79 and NGC 3227, the data are of sufficient quality to r…
This is the third in a series of papers reporting on a large reverberation-mapping campaign aimed to study the properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with high accretion rates. We present new results on the variability of the optical Fe II emission lines in 10 AGNs observed by the Yunnan Observatory 2.4m telescope during 2012--2013. We detect statistically significant time lags, relative to the AGN continuum, in nine of the sources. This accurate measurement is achieved by using a sophisticated spectral fitting scheme that allows for apparent flux variations of the host galaxy, and severa…
We test the two-corona accretion scenario for active galactic nuclei in the case of the `bare' Seyfert 1 galaxy HE 1143-1810. We perform a detailed study of the broad-band UV--X-ray spectral properties and of the short-term variability. We present results of a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR monitoring of the source, consisting of 5x20 ks observations, each separated by 2 days, performed in December 2017. The source is variable in flux among the different observations, and a correlation is observed between the UV and X-ray emission. Moderate spectral variability is observed in the soft band. The t…

Radio-loud Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are unique probes of the formation of powerful radio jets at extreme (near-Eddington) accretion rates and low black hole masses, in a regime very different from classical blazars and, therefore, not probed before. Further, strong thermal and non-thermal components simultaneously present in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs), shed new light on the jet-disk connection at much shorter timescales, given their low SMBH masses. While NLS1 galaxies have been studied thoroughly at optical and X-ray energies for decades, the populations of radio-…
The γ-ray detection from several radio-loud (RL) narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies has enabled us to study powerful relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with smaller black hole masses and higher accretion rates than classical blazars. However, the sample of those γ-ray detected NLS1s available is still not large enough for a comprehensive and statistical study. We provide a summary of our detections and follow-up studies of three γ-ray-emitting NLS1s: SDSS J211852.96-073227.5 with flaring γ-ray radiation (Yang et al. 2018, Paliya et al. 2018) and SDSS J122222.55+041315.7 with…
The supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are at the lowest end of mass function of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and preferentially reside in late-type host galaxies with pseudobulges, which are thought to be formed by internal secular evolution. On the other hand, the population of radio-loud NLS1s presents a challenge for the relativistic jet paradigm that powerful radio jets are exclusively associated with very high mass SMBHs in elliptical hosts, which are built-up through galaxy mergers. We investigated distorted radio structures associated with the n…
Radio and $γ$-ray loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are unique objects to study the formation and evolution of relativistic jets, as they are believed to have high accretion rates and powered by low mass black holes contrary to that known for blazars. However, only about a dozen $γ$-ray detected NLS1s ($γ$-NLS1s) are known to date and all of them are at $z\le1$. Here, we report the identification of a new $γ$-ray emitting NLS1 TXS 1206+549 at $z=1.344$. A near-infrared spectrum taken with the Subaru telescope showed H$β$ emission line with FWHM of $1194\pm77$ km s$^{-1}$ and weak [O …
Hard X-ray spectra of 28 bright Seyfert galaxies observed with INTEGRAL were analyzed together with the X-ray spectra from XMM-Newton, Suzaku and RXTE. These broad-band data were fitted with a model assuming a thermal Comptonization as a primary continuum component. We tested several model options through a fitting of the Comptonized continuum accompanied by a complex absorption and a Compton reflection. Both the large data set used and the model space explored allowed us to accurately determine a mean temperature kTe of the electron plasma, the Compton parameter y and the Compton reflection s…
We present the variability analysis of a 100 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1.5 active galaxy NGC 3227. The observation found NGC 3227 in a period where its hard power-law component displayed remarkably little long-term variability. This lucky event allows us to observe clearly a soft spectral component undergoing a large-amplitude but slow flux variation. Using combined spectral and timing analysis we isolate two independent variable continuum components and characterize their behavior as a function of timescale. Rapid and coherent variations throughout the 0.2-10 keV band reveal a …
Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1) are active galactic nuclei (AGN) known to have small masses of the central black hole and high accretion rates. NLS1s are generally radio-quiet, but a small part of them (about 7\%) are radio-loud. The recent discovery of powerful relativistic jets in radio-loud NLS1s (RLNLS1s), emitting at high-energy $γ$-rays, opened intriguing questions. The observed luminosity of the jet is generally weak, smaller than blazars, although when rescaled for the mass of the central black hole, it becomes of the same order of magnitude of the latter. The weak luminosity, an…
Flat-spectrum radio-loud Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are a recently discovered class of $γ$-ray emitting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), that exhibit some blazar-like properties which are explained with the presence of a relativistic jet viewed at small angles. When blazars are observed at larger angles they appear as radio-galaxies, and we expect to observe an analogue parent population for beamed NLS1s. However, the number of known NLS1s with the jet viewed at large angles is not enough. Therefore, we tried to understand the origin of this deficit. Current hypotheses about the natur…
