Current state-of-the-art approaches for named entity recognition (NER) typically consider text at the sentence-level and thus do not model information that crosses sentence boundaries. However, the use of transformer-based models for NER offers natural options for capturing document-level features. In this paper, we perform a comparative evaluation of document-level features in the two standard NER architectures commonly considered in the literature, namely "fine-tuning" and "feature-based LSTM-CRF". We evaluate different hyperparameters for document-level features such as context window size and enforcing document-locality. We present experiments from which we derive recommendations for how to model document context and present new state-of-the-art scores on several CoNLL-03 benchmark datasets. Our approach is integrated into the Flair framework to facilitate reproduction of our experiments.
This paper describes the system proposed by Sabancı University Natural Language Processing Group in the SemEval-2022 MultiCoNER task. We developed an unsupervised entity linking pipeline that detects potential entity mentions with the help of Wikipedia and also uses the corresponding Wikipedia context to help the classifier in finding the named entity type of that mention. Our results showed that our pipeline improved performance significantly, especially for complex entities in low-context settings.
This work models named entity distribution from a way of visualizing topological structure of embedding space, so that we make an assumption that most, if not all, named entities (NEs) for a language tend to aggregate together to be accommodated by a specific hypersphere in embedding space. Thus we present a novel open definition for NE which alleviates the obvious drawback in previous closed NE definition with a limited NE dictionary. Then, we show two applications with introducing the proposed named entity hypersphere model. First, using a generative adversarial neural network to learn a tra…
Named Entity Recognition is always important when dealing with major Natural Language Processing tasks such as information extraction, question-answering, machine translation, document summarization etc so in this paper we put forward a survey of Named Entities in Indian Languages with particular reference to Assamese. There are various rule-based and machine learning approaches available for Named Entity Recognition. At the very first of the paper we give an idea of the available approaches for Named Entity Recognition and then we discuss about the related research in this field. Assamese lik…

Named entity recognition is a challenging task in Natural Language Processing, especially for informal and noisy social media text. Chinese word boundaries are also entity boundaries, therefore, named entity recognition for Chinese text can benefit from word boundary detection, outputted by Chinese word segmentation. Yet Chinese word segmentation poses its own difficulty because it is influenced by several factors, e.g., segmentation criteria, employed algorithm, etc. Dealt improperly, it may generate a cascading failure to the quality of named entity recognition followed. In this paper we int…
Traditional named entity recognition models use gazetteers (lists of entities) as features to improve performance. Although modern neural network models do not require such hand-crafted features for strong performance, recent work has demonstrated their utility for named entity recognition on English data. However, designing such features for low-resource languages is challenging, because exhaustive entity gazetteers do not exist in these languages. To address this problem, we propose a method of "soft gazetteers" that incorporates ubiquitously available information from English knowledge base…
Annotated datasets in different domains are critical for many supervised learning-based solutions to related problems and for the evaluation of the proposed solutions. Topics in natural language processing (NLP) similarly require annotated datasets to be used for such purposes. In this paper, we target at two NLP problems, named entity recognition and stance detection, and present the details of a tweet dataset in Turkish annotated for named entity and stance information. Within the course of the current study, both the named entity and stance annotations of the included tweets are made public…
We present a corpus of Finnish news articles with a manually prepared named entity annotation. The corpus consists of 953 articles (193,742 word tokens) with six named entity classes (organization, location, person, product, event, and date). The articles are extracted from the archives of Digitoday, a Finnish online technology news source. The corpus is available for research purposes. We present baseline experiments on the corpus using a rule-based and two deep learning systems on two, in-domain and out-of-domain, test sets.

Named entity recognition (NER) is widely used in natural language processing applications and downstream tasks. However, most NER tools target flat annotation from popular datasets, eschewing the semantic information available in nested entity mentions. We describe NNE---a fine-grained, nested named entity dataset over the full Wall Street Journal portion of the Penn Treebank (PTB). Our annotation comprises 279,795 mentions of 114 entity types with up to 6 layers of nesting. We hope the public release of this large dataset for English newswire will encourage development of new techniques for n…

Named entity recognition systems perform well on standard datasets comprising English news. But given the paucity of data, it is difficult to draw conclusions about the robustness of systems with respect to recognizing a diverse set of entities. We propose a method for auditing the in-domain robustness of systems, focusing specifically on differences in performance due to the national origin of entities. We create entity-switched datasets, in which named entities in the original texts are replaced by plausible named entities of the same type but of different national origin. We find that state…
Neural architecture for named entity recognition has achieved great success in the field of natural language processing. Currently, the dominating architecture consists of a bi-directional recurrent neural network (RNN) as the encoder and a conditional random field (CRF) as the decoder. In this paper, we propose a deformable stacked structure for named entity recognition, in which the connections between two adjacent layers are dynamically established. We evaluate the deformable stacked structure by adapting it to different layers. Our model achieves the state-of-the-art performances on the On…
We present RONEC - the Named Entity Corpus for the Romanian language. The corpus contains over 26000 entities in ~5000 annotated sentences, belonging to 16 distinct classes. The sentences have been extracted from a copy-right free newspaper, covering several styles. This corpus represents the first initiative in the Romanian language space specifically targeted for named entity recognition. It is available in BRAT and CoNLL-U Plus formats, and it is free to use and extend at github.com/dumitrescustefan/ronec .

Online content analysis employs algorithmic methods to identify entities in unstructured text. Both machine learning and knowledge-base approaches lie at the foundation of contemporary named entities extraction systems. However, the progress in deploying these approaches on web-scale has been been hampered by the computational cost of NLP over massive text corpora. We present SpeedRead (SR), a named entity recognition pipeline that runs at least 10 times faster than Stanford NLP pipeline. This pipeline consists of a high performance Penn Treebank- compliant tokenizer, close to state-of-art par…

We propose a neural reranking system for named entity recognition (NER). The basic idea is to leverage recurrent neural network models to learn sentence-level patterns that involve named entity mentions. In particular, given an output sentence produced by a baseline NER model, we replace all entity mentions, such as \textit{Barack Obama}, into their entity types, such as \textit{PER}. The resulting sentence patterns contain direct output information, yet is less sparse without specific named entities. For example, "PER was born in LOC" can be such a pattern. LSTM and CNN structures are utilise…

We propose an attentive neural network for the task of named entity recognition in Vietnamese. The proposed attentive neural model makes use of character-based language models and word embeddings to encode words as vector representations. A neural network architecture of encoder, attention, and decoder layers is then utilized to encode knowledge of input sentences and to label entity tags. The experimental results show that the proposed attentive neural network achieves the state-of-the-art results on the benchmark named entity recognition datasets in Vietnamese in comparison to both hand-craf…
In this work, we present new state-of-the-art results of 93.59,% and 79.59,% for Turkish and Czech named entity recognition based on the model of (Lample et al., 2016). We contribute by proposing several schemes for representing the morphological analysis of a word in the context of named entity recognition. We show that a concatenation of this representation with the word and character embeddings improves the performance. The effect of these representation schemes on the tagging performance is also investigated.
We propose a simple and practical method for named entity linking (NEL), based on entity representation by multiple embeddings. To explore this method, and to review its dependency on parameters, we measure its performance on Namesakes, a highly challenging dataset of ambiguously named entities. Our observations suggest that the minimal number of mentions required to create a knowledge base (KB) entity is very important for NEL performance. The number of embeddings is less important and can be kept small, within as few as 10 or less. We show that our representations of KB entities can be adjus…
Named Entities (NEs) are often written with no orthographic changes across different languages that share a common alphabet. We show that this can be leveraged so as to improve named entity recognition (NER) by using unsupervised word clusters from secondary languages as features in state-of-the-art discriminative NER systems. We observe significant increases in performance, finding that person and location identification is particularly improved, and that phylogenetically close languages provide more valuable features than more distant languages.
In this report, we describe our participant named-entity recognition system at VLSP 2018 evaluation campaign. We formalized the task as a sequence labeling problem using BIO encoding scheme. We applied a feature-based model which combines word, word-shape features, Brown-cluster-based features, and word-embedding-based features. We compare several methods to deal with nested entities in the dataset. We showed that combining tags of entities at all levels for training a sequence labeling model (joint-tag model) improved the accuracy of nested named-entity recognition.

Named entity recognition (NER) and entity linking (EL) are two fundamentally related tasks, since in order to perform EL, first the mentions to entities have to be detected. However, most entity linking approaches disregard the mention detection part, assuming that the correct mentions have been previously detected. In this paper, we perform joint learning of NER and EL to leverage their relatedness and obtain a more robust and generalisable system. For that, we introduce a model inspired by the Stack-LSTM approach (Dyer et al., 2015). We observe that, in fact, doing multi-task learning of NER…

In named entity recognition, we often don't have a large in-domain training corpus or a knowledge base with adequate coverage to train a model directly. In this paper, we propose a method where, given training data in a related domain with similar (but not identical) named entity (NE) types and a small amount of in-domain training data, we use transfer learning to learn a domain-specific NE model. That is, the novelty in the task setup is that we assume not just domain mismatch, but also label mismatch.
In biomedical literature, it is common for entity boundaries to not align with word boundaries. Therefore, effective identification of entity spans requires approaches capable of considering tokens that are smaller than words. We introduce a novel, subword approach for named entity recognition (NER) that uses byte-pair encodings (BPE) in combination with convolutional and recurrent neural networks to produce byte-level tags of entities. We present experimental results on several standard biomedical datasets, namely the BioCreative VI Bio-ID, JNLPBA, and GENETAG datasets. We demonstrate competi…

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a crucial upstream task in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Traditional tag scheme approaches offer a single recognition that does not meet the needs of many downstream tasks such as coreference resolution. Meanwhile, Tag scheme approaches ignore the continuity of entities. Inspired by one-stage object detection models in computer vision (CV), this paper proposes a new no-tag scheme, the Whole-Aware Detection, which makes NER an object detection task. Meanwhile, this paper presents a novel model, Entity Candidate Network (ECNet), and a specific convolution n…
Compared with traditional sentence-level relation extraction, document-level relation extraction is a more challenging task where an entity in a document may be mentioned multiple times and associated with multiple relations. However, most methods of document-level relation extraction do not distinguish between mention-level features and entity-level features, and just apply simple pooling operation for aggregating mention-level features into entity-level features. As a result, the distinct semantics between the different mentions of an entity are overlooked. To address this problem, we propos…

Document-level entity-based extraction (EE), aiming at extracting entity-centric information such as entity roles and entity relations, is key to automatic knowledge acquisition from text corpora for various domains. Most document-level EE systems build extractive models, which struggle to model long-term dependencies among entities at the document level. To address this issue, we propose a generative framework for two document-level EE tasks: role-filler entity extraction (REE) and relation extraction (RE). We first formulate them as a template generation problem, allowing models to efficient…

Few-shot named entity recognition (NER) enables us to build a NER system for a new domain using very few labeled examples. However, existing prototypical networks for this task suffer from roughly estimated label dependency and closely distributed prototypes, thus often causing misclassifications. To address the above issues, we propose EP-Net, an Entity-level Prototypical Network enhanced by dispersedly distributed prototypes. EP-Net builds entity-level prototypes and considers text spans to be candidate entities, so it no longer requires the label dependency. In addition, EP-Net trains the p…

Dependency tree structures capture long-distance and syntactic relationships between words in a sentence. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective dependency-guided LSTM-CRF model to encode the complete dependency trees and capture the above properties for the task of named entity recognition (NER). The state of art natural language processing systems relies on sizable training datasets to achieve high performance. Lack of such datasets in the specialized low resource domains lead to suboptimal performance. In this work, we adapt backtranslation to generate high quality and linguistically diverse synthetic data for low-resource named entity recognition. We perform experiments on two datasets from the materials science (MaSciP) and biomedical domains (S800). The empirical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed augmentation strategy, particularly in the low-resource scenario.
In recent years, named entity recognition has always been a popular research in the field of natural language processing, while traditional deep learning methods require a large amount of labeled data for model training, which makes them not suitable for areas where labeling resources are scarce. To solve these problems, enlightened by a processing method of Chinese named entity recognition, we propose to use domain knowledge to improve t…
We consider the task of document-level entity linking (EL), where it is important to make consistent decisions for entity mentions over the full document jointly. We aim to leverage explicit "connections" among mentions within the document itself: we propose to join the EL task with that of coreference resolution (coref). This is complementary to related works that exploit either (i) implicit document information (e.g., latent relations among entity mentions, or general language models) or (ii) connections between the candidate links (e.g, as inferred from the external knowledge base). Named entity recognition (NER) is an important research problem in natural language processing. There are three types of NER tasks, including flat, nested and discontinuous entity recognition. Most previous sequential labeling models are task-specific, while recent years have witnessed the rising of generative models due to the advantage of unifying all NER tasks into the seq2seq model framework. Although achieving promising performance, our pilot studies demonstrate that existing generative models are ineffective at detecting entity boundaries and estimating entity types. In many scenarios, named entity recognition (NER) models severely suffer from unlabeled entity problem, where the entities of a sentence may not be fully annotated. Through empirical studies performed on synthetic datasets, we find two causes of performance degradation. One is the reduction of annotated entities and the other is treating unlabeled entities as negative instances. The first cause has less impact than the second one and can be mitigated by adopting pretraining language models. The second cause seriously misguides a model in training and greatly affects its performances. Based on …
