The spin-$1/2$ model system with antiferromagnetic (AF) couplings on a $J_1$-$J_2$ checkerboard lattice, known as the planar pyrochlore model, is strongly frustrated and associated with a two-to-one dimensional crossover. Using the Projected Entangled Simplex States tensor network ansatz, we identify a large number of nearly degenerate states in the frustrated region ($J_1<J_2$). Specifically, we find the long-sought crossed-dimer valence bond solid (VBS) state to be the ground state at $J_1\lesssim J_2$, while various 1D AF correlated states take over the rest. We verify the stability of the VBS state against nematic perturbation. The corresponding bosonic picture provides an intuitive understanding of the low-energy physics. Particularly, it predicts weaker VBS states in the easy-plane limit, which we confirm numerically. Our results clarify the most essential ground state properties of this interesting system and demonstrate the usefulness of bosonic picture in dealing with frustrated magnetism.
Quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on pyrochlore and checkerboard lattices in a strong external magnetic field are mapped onto hard-core lattice gases with an extended exclusion region. The effective models are studied by the exchange Monte Carlo simulations and by the transfer matrix method. The transition point and the critical exponents are obtained numerically for a square-lattice gas of particles with the second-neighbor exclusion, which describes a checkerboard antiferromagnet. The exact structure of the magnon crystal state is determined for a pyrochlore antiferromagnet.
Ordering by thermal fluctuations is studied for the classical XY antiferromagnet on a checkerboard lattice in zero and finite magnetic fields by means of analytical and Monte Carlo methods. The model exhibits a variety of novel broken symmetries including states with nematic ordering in zero field and with triatic order parameter at high fields.
We use a renormalized mean field theory to study the Gutzwiller projected BCS states of the extended Hubbard model in the large $U$ limit, or the $t$-$t'$-$J$-$J'$ model on a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. At small $t'/t$, the frustration due to the diagonal terms of $t'$ and $J'$ does not alter the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing symmetry, and the negative (positive) $t'/t$ enhances (suppresses) the pairing order parameter. At large $t'/t$, the ground state has an extended s-wave symmetry. At the intermediate $t'/t$, the ground state is $d+id$ or $d+is$-wave with time reversal symmetry brok…
Motivated by the discovery of new family 122 iron-based superconductors, we present the theoretical results on the ground state phase diagram, spin wave and dynamic structure factor of the extended $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model. In the reasonable physical parameter region of $K_{2}Fe_{4}Se_{5}$, we fi{}nd the block checkerboard antiferromagnetic order phase is stable. There are two acoustic branches and six optical branches spin wave in the block checkerboard antiferromagnetic phase, which has analytic expression in the high symmetry points. To compare the further neutron scattering experimen…
We present numerical evidence that the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the two-dimensional checkerboard lattice exhibits several magnetization plateaux for m=0, 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4, where m is the magnetization normalized by its saturation value. These incompressible states correspond to somehow similar valence-bond crystal phases that break lattice symmetries, though they are different from the already established plaquette phase for m=0. Our results are based on Exact Diagonalization as well as Density Matrix Renormalization Group large-scale simulations, and interpreted in terms of simple trial w…
Employing numerical linked-cluster expansions (NLCEs) along with exact diagonalizations of finite clusters with periodic boundary condition, we study the energy, specific heat, entropy, and various susceptibilities of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice. NLCEs, combined with extrapolation techniques, allow us to access temperatures much lower than those accessible to exact diagonalization and other series expansions. We find that the high-temperature peak in specific heat decreases as the frustration increases, consistent with the large amount of unquenched entro…
Vertical density matrix algorithm (VDMA), a tensor product state formulation of the ``higher-dimensional'' density matrix renormalization group, is applied to the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ model on the checkerboard lattice. The VDMA was, in the preceding study, applied to the transverse field Ising model on the square lattice and the three-dimensional classical Ising model. In the present paper, its implementation procedure is modified in order to apply the VDMA to the XXZ model. Numerical accuracy of the VDMA is investigated for the XXZ model on the square lattice, which shows that the m…
We discuss recent elastic neutron scattering and scanning tunneling experiments on high-T_c cuprates exposed to an applied magnetic field. In particular we show that a physical picture consisting of antiferromagnetic vortex cores operating as pinning centers for surrounding stripes is qualitatively consistent with the neutron data provided the stripes have the usual antiphase modulation. Further, we calculate the electronic structure in such a region using a T-matrix method, and find a checkerboard interference pattern consistent with recent scanning tunneling experiments.
We study the phase diagram of two models of spin-1/2 antiferromagnets composed of corner-sharing tetrahedra, the basis of the pyrochlore structure. Primarily, we focus on the Heisenberg antiferromaget on the checkerboard lattice (also called the planar pyrochlore and crossed-chains model). This model has an anisotropic limit, when the dimensionless ratio of two exchange constants, J_\times/J << 1, in which it consists of one-dimensional spin chains coupled weakly together in a frustrated fashion. Using recently developed techniques combining renormalization group ideas and one-dimensional boso…
The bosonic t-J model is a strong-on-site repulsion limit of the two-component Bose-Hubbard model and is expected to be realized by experiments of cold atoms in an optical lattice. In previous papers, we studied the bosonic t-J model by both analytical methods and numerical Monte - Carlo (MC) simulations. However, in the case of finite $J_z$, where $J_z$ is the $z$-component coupling constant of the pseudospin interaction, the phase diagram of the model was investigated by assuming the checkerboard type of boson densities. In this study, we shall continue our previous study of the bosonic t-J …
In the limit of large nearest--neighbor and on--site Coulomb repulsions, the Hubbard model on the planar pyrochlore lattice maps, near quarter-filling, onto a doped quantum fully packed loop model. The phase diagram exhibits at quarter filling a novel quantum state of matter, the Resonating Singlet-Pair Crystal, an insulating phase breaking lattice symmetry. Properties of a few doped holes are investigated. In contrast to the doped quantum antiferromagnet, phase separation is restricted to very small hopping leaving an extended``window'' for superconducting pairing. However the later is more f…
We use the recently developed tensor network algorithm based on infinite projected entangled pair states (iPEPS) to study the phase diagram of frustrated antiferromagnetic J1-J2 Heisenberg model on a checkerboard lattice. The simulation indicates a Neel ordered phase when J2 < 0.88J1, a plaquette valence bond solid state when 0.88 < J2/J1 < 1.11, and a stripe phase when J2 > 1.11J1, with two first-order transitions across the phase boundaries. The calculation shows the cross-dimer state proposed before is unlikely to be the ground state of the model, although such a state indeed arises as a me…
We propose a theory for doped antiferromagnet based on a bosonic resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state with incorporating the phase string effect. Both antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting phase transitions occur naturally within such a bosonic RVB phase. Two distinct metallic regions -- underdoping and optimum-doping -- are also found to be a logic consequence, whose unique features explain the recent neutron-scattering measurements in cuprates.
From the first-principles calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of compound Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O (Pn = As or Sb). We find that in the ground state Na$_2$Ti$_2$As$_2$O is a blocked checkerboard antiferromagnetic semiconductor with a small band gap of about 0.15 eV, in contrast, Na$_2$Ti$_2$Sb$_2$O is a bi-collinear antiferromagnetic semimetal, both with a small moment of about 0.5$μ_B$ around each Ti atom. We show that there is a strong Fermi surface nesting in Na$_2$Ti$_2$Pn$_2$O. And we verify that the blocked checkerboard and bi-collinear antiferromagnetic state…
Within a spin wave analysis and a fermionic large-n limit, it is shown that the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice may have different ground states, depending on the spin size $S$. Through an additional exchange interaction that corresponds to an inter-tetrahedra coupling, the stability of the Néel state has been explored for all cases from the square lattice to the isotropic checkerboard lattice. Away from the isotropic limit and within the linear spin wave approximation, it is shown that there exists a critical coupling for which the local magnetization of the Née…
It has been argued that inhomogeneity generally can enhance superconductivity in the cuprate high-Tc materials. To check the validity of this claim, we study d-wave superconductivity on the checkerboard Hubbard model on a square lattice using the Cellular Dynamical Mean Field theory method with an exact diagonalization solver at zero temperature. The d-wave order parameter is computed for various inhomogeneity levels over the entire doping range of interest in both strong and weak coupling regimes. At a given doping, the size of the d-wave order parameter manifests itself directly in the heigh…
We study the spin excitation spectra of the two-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with a checkerboard structures using stochastic analytic continuation of the imaginary-time correlation function obtained from a quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The checkerboard models have two different antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$, and the tuning parameter $g$ is defined as $J_{2}/J_{1}$. The dynamic spin structure factors are systematically calculated in all phases of the models as well as at the critical points. To give a full understanding of the dynamic spectra, …
The seminal work by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer taken further by Eliashberg to the intermediate coupling solved the problem of conventional superconductors about half a century ago. The Froehlich and Jahn-Teller electron-phonon interactions were identified as an essential piece of physics in all novel superconductors. The BCS theory provides a qualitatively correct description of some of them like magnesium diborade and doped fullerenes (if the polaron formation is taken into account). However, cuprates remain a problem. Here I show that the bipolaron extension of the BCS theory to the stro…
We study the ground state properties of the geometrically frustrated Hubbard model on the anisotropic checkerboard lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping $t$ and next nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$. By using the path-integral renormalization group method, we study the phase diagram in the parameter space of the Hubbard interaction $U$ and the frustration-control parameter $t'/t$. Close examinations of the effective hopping, the double occupancy, the momentum distribution and the spin/charge correlation functions allow us to determine the phase diagram at zero temperature, where the plaquette-sin…
We study the ground-state (gs) phases of the spin-half anisotropic planar pyrochlore (or crossed chain) model using the coupled cluster method (CCM). The model is a frustrated antiferromagnetic (AFM) $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$ system on the checkerboard lattice, with nearest-neighbor exchange bonds $J_{1}>0$ and next-nearest-neighbor bonds $J_{2} \equiv κJ_{1} > 0$. Using various AFM classical ground states as CCM model states we present results for their gs energy, average on-site magnetization, and susceptibilities to plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) and crossed-dimer valence-bond crystal (CDVBC)…
Two quantum spin models with bilinear-biquadratic exchange interactions are constructed on the checkerboard lattice. It is proved that, under certain sufficient conditions on the exchange parameters, their ground states consist of two degenerate Shastry-Sutherland singlet configurations. The constructions are studied for arbitrary spin-S. The sufficient conditions for the existence of ferromagnetic ground state are also found exactly. The approximate quantum phase diagrams are presented using the exact results, together with a variational estimate for the Néel antiferromagnetic phase. A two-le…
A bosonic realization of the SU(2) Lie algebra and of its vector representation is constructed, and an effective low-energy description of the Bose-Hubbard model in the form of anisotropic theory of quantum rotors is proposed and discussed. A possibility of a normal zero-temperature bosonic phase with neither crystalline nor superfluid order around the tip of the checkerboard-solid lobe at half-integer fillings is examined.
The checkerboard lattice, with alternating 'crossed' plaquettes, serves as the two dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice. The corner sharing plaquette structure leads to a hugely degenerate ground state, and no magnetic order, for classical spins with short range antiferromagnetic interaction. For the half-filled Hubbard model on this structure, however, we find that the Mott insulating phase involves virtual electronic processes that generate longer range and multispin couplings. These couplings lift the degeneracy, selecting a 'flux like' state in the Mott insulator. Increasing temper…
Exact diagonalizations of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice have been performed for sizes up to N=36 in the full Hilbert space and N=40 in the restricted subspace of first neighbor dimers. This antiferromagnet does not break SU(2) symmetry and displays long range order in 4-spin S=0 plaquettes. Both the symmetry properties of the spectrum and various correlations functions are extensively studied. At variance with the kagom{é} antiferromagnet, the Heisenberg quantum model on a checkerboard lattice is a Valence Bond Crystal. Some results concerning the 3-dimensionnal spi…
We study the t-J model with four holes on a 32-site square lattice using exact diagonalization. This system corresponds to doping level x=1/8. At the ``realistic'' parameter J/t=0.3, holes in the ground state of this system are unbound. They have short range repulsion due to lowering of kinetic energy. There is no antiferromagnetic spin order and the electron momentum distribution function resembles hole pockets. Furthermore, we show evidence that in case antiferromagnetic order exists, holes form d-wave bound pairs and there is mutual repulsion among hole pairs. This presumably will occur at …
We present a scheme to implement a Fermi-Hubbard-like model in ultracold atoms in optical lattices and analyze the topological features of its ground state. In particular, we show that the ground state for appropriate parameters has a large overlap with a lattice version of the bosonic Laughlin state at filling factor one half. The scheme utilizes laser assisted and normal tunnelling in a checkerboard optical lattice. The requirements on temperature, interactions, and hopping strengths are similar to those needed to observe the Néel antiferromagnetic ordering in the standard Fermi-Hubbard mode…
We investigate the field-induced insulator-to-superfluid transition of bosonic quasiparticles in $S=1/2$ weakly-coupled dimer antiferromagnets. In presence of realistic disorder due to site dilution of the magnetic lattice, we show that the system displays an extended Bose-glass phase characterized by the localization of the hard-core quasiparticles.
We investigate the quantum phase transition from antiferromagnetism ($AF$) to algebraic spin liquid ($ASL$). {\it We propose that spin 1/2 fermionic spinons in the $ASL$ fractionalize into spin 1/2 bosonic spinons and spinless fermions at the quantum critical point ($QCP$) between the $AF$ and the $ASL$}. Condensation of the bosonic spinons leads to the $AF$, where the condensed bosonic spinons are confined with the spinless fermions to form the fermionic spinons. These fermionic spinons are also confined to make antiferromagnons as elementary excitations in the $AF$. {\it Approaching the $QCP…
Using perturbative expansions and the contractor renormalization (CORE) algorithm, we obtain effective hard-core bosonic Hamiltonians describing the low-energy physics of $S=1/2$ spin-dimer antiferromagnets known to display supersolid phases under an applied magnetic field. The resulting effective models are investigated by means of mean-field analysis and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A "leapfrog mechanism", through means of which extra singlets delocalize in a checkerboard-solid environment via correlated hoppings, is unveiled that accounts for the supersolid behavior.
In terms of spinless fermions via the Jordan-Wigner transformation along a snake-like path and spin waves modified so as to restore the sublattice symmetry, we investigate static and dynamic properties of two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders. The specific heat is finely reproduced by the spinless fermions, whereas the magnetic susceptibility is well described by the modified spin waves. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate is discussed in detail with particular emphasis on its novel field dependence.
In terms of spinless fermions and spin waves, we describe magnetic properties of a spin-1/2 ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic bond-alternating chain which behaves as a Haldane-gap antiferromagnet. On one hand, we employ the Jordan-Wigner transformation and treat the fermionic Hamiltonian within the Hartree-Fock approximation. On the other hand, we employ the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and modify the conventional spin-wave theory so as to restore the sublattice symmetry. We calculate the excitation gap, the specific heat, the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization curves, and the nuclear s…
We present design techniques of special optical lattices that allow quantum simulation of spin frustration in two-dimensional systems. By carefully overlaying optical lattices with different periods and orientations, we are able to adjust the ratio between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interaction strengths in a square spin lattice and realize frustration effects. We show that only laser beams of a single frequency is required, and the parameter space reachable in our design is broad enough to study the important phases in the $J_1$-$J_2$ frustrated Heisenberg model and checke…
The effect of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations on two-dimensional quarter-filled systems is studied theoretically. An effective $t-J'-V$ model on a square lattice which accounts for checkerboard charge fluctuations and next-nearest-neighbors antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations is considered. From calculations based on large-N theory on this model it is found that the exchange interaction, $J'$, increases the attraction between electrons in the d$_{xy}$ channel only, so that both charge and spin fluctuations work cooperatively to produce d$_{xy}$ pairing.
We propose a Real-Space Gutzwiller variational approach and apply it to a system of repulsively interacting ultracold fermions with spin 1/2 trapped in an optical lattice with a harmonic confinement. Using the Real-Space Gutzwiller variational approach, we find that in system with balanced spin-mixtures on a square lattice, antiferromagnetism either appears in a checkerboard pattern or forms a ring and antiferromagnetic order is stable in the regions where the particle density is close to one, which is consistent with the recent results obtained by the Real-Space Dynamical Mean-field Theory ap…
Motivated by the recent proposal of Bosonic Dirac materials (BDM), we revisited the Ising model on a honeycomb lattice in the presence of the longitudinal and transverse fields. We apply linear spin-wave theory to obtain the magnon dispersion and its degenerated points. These special degenerated points emerge on the excitation spectrum as a function of the external fields and can be identified as Bosonic Dirac Points (BDP). Since that, in the vicinity of these points the Magnons becomes massless with a linear energy spectrum as well as insensible in relation to weak impurity, exactly as it occ…
The confinement of a spinon liberated by doping two-dimensional frustrated quantum antiferromagnets with a non-magnetic impurity or a mobile hole is investigated. For a static vacancy, an intermediate behavior between complete deconfinement (kagome) and strong confinement (checkerboard) is identified in the J_1{-}J_2{-}J_3 model on the square lattice, with the emergence of two length scales, a spinon confinement length larger than the magnetic correlation length. For mobile holes, this translates into an extended spinon-holon boundstate allowing one to bridge momentum (ARPES spectral function)…
We study the low temperature properties of the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a mean field Schwinger spin-1/2 boson scheme that reproduces quantitatively the zero temperature energy spectrum derived previously using series expansions. By analyzing the spin-spin and the boson density-density dynamical structure factors, we identify the unphysical spin excitations that come from the relaxation of the local constraint on bosons. This allows us to reconstruct a free energy based on the physical excitations only, whose predictions for entropy and uniform susceptibility seem to b…
We report polarized- and unpolarized- neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the magnetic excitation spectrum in the spin-charge ordered phase of La3/2Sr1/2NiO4. Up to energies of ~30 meV we observe broad magnetic modes characteristic of a near checkerboard ordering. A linear spin-wave model for an ideal checkerboard ordering with a single antiferromagnetic exchange interaction J' = 5.8 +/- 0.5 meV between next-nearest-neighbour spins on Ni2+ sites, together with a small XY-like single-ion anisotropy, provides a reasonable description of the measured dispersion. Above 30 meV the excitati…
We present the results of an exact diagonalization study of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional version of the pyrochlore lattice, also known as the square lattice with crossings or the checkerboard lattice. Examining the low energy spectra for systems of up to 24 spins, we find that all clusters studied have non-degenerate ground states with total spin zero, and big energy gaps to states with higher total spin. We also find a large number of non-magnetic excitations at energies within this spin gap. Spin-spin and spin-Peierls correlation functions appear to be short-r…
We study the three-dimensional bosonic t-J model, i.e., the t-J model of "bosonic electrons" at finite temperatures. This model describes a system of cold bosonic atoms with two species in an optical lattice. The model is derived from the Hubbard model for very large on-site repulsive interaction between bosons of same species (hard-core nature) and also strong correlations between different species. The operator B_{xσ} for an atom at the site x with a two-component (pseudo-) spin σ(=1,2) is treated as a hard-core boson operator, and represented by a composite of two slave particles; a spinon …
We compute the dynamical structure factor of the spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg model using the mean field Schwinger boson theory. We find that a reconstructed dispersion, resulting from a non trivial redistribution of the spectral weight, agrees quite well with the spin excitation spectrum recently found with series expansions. In particular, we recover the strong renormalization with respect to linear spin wave theory along with the appearance of roton-like minima. Furthermore, near the roton-like minima the contribution of the two spinon continuum to the static structure factor is about 40 …
The energy associated with bosonic and fermionic pairs of topological spin defects in doped antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 square lattice is estimated within a resonating valence bond scenario, as described by a t-t'-J-like model Hamiltonian, plus a t-perpendicular, responsible of a three-dimensional screening of the electrostatic repulsion within the bosonic pairs. For parameters appropriate for monolayered high-T_c superconductors, both fermionic and bosonic pairs show x^2-y^2 symmetry. We find a critical value of doping such that the energy of the bosonic pairs goes below twice the ener…
Thermodynamic quantities and correlation functions (CFs) of the classical antiferromagnet on the checkerboard lattice are studied for the exactly solvable infinite-component spin-vector model, $D \to \infty$. In contrast to conventional two-dimensional magnets with continuous symmetry showing extended short-range order at distances smaller than the correlation length, $r \lesssim ξ_c \propto \exp(T^*/T)$, correlations in the checkerboard-lattice model decay already at the scale of the lattice spacing due to the strong degeneracy of the ground state characterized by a macroscopic number of stro…
The zero-temperature ground-state (GS) properties and phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1 $J_{1}$--$J_{2}$ Heisenberg model on the checkerboard square lattice are studied, using the coupled cluster method. We consider the case where the nearest-neighbour exchange bonds have strength $J_{1}>0$ and the next-nearest-neighbour exchange bonds present (viz., in the checkerboard pattern of the planar pyrochlore) have strength $J_{2} \equiv κJ_{1}>0$. We find significant differences from both the spin-1/2 and classical versions of the model. We find that the spin-1 model has a first phase transition …
We use neutron scattering to study the lattice and magnetic structure of the layered half-doped manganite Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{1.5}$MnO$_4$. On cooling from high temperature, the system first becomes charge- and orbital- ordered (CO/OO) near $T_{CO}=300$ K and then develops checkerboard-like antiferromagnetic (AF) order below $T_{N}=130$ K. At temperatures above $T_{N}$ but below $T_{CO}$ ($T_N<T<T_{CO}$), the appearance of short-range AF spin correlations suppresses the CO/OO induced orthorhombic strain, contrasting with other half-doped manganites, where AF order has no observable effect on the la…
In the pyrochlore lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, for large spin length $S$, the massive classical ground state degeneracy is partly lifted by the zero-point energy of quantum fluctuations at harmonic order in spin-waves. However, there remains an infinite manifold of degenerate collinear ground states, related by a gaugelike symmetry. We have extended the spin-wave calculation to quartic order, assuming a Gaussian variational wavefunction (equivalent to Hartree-Fock approximation). Quartic calculations \emph{do} break the harmonic-order degeneracy of periodic ground states. The form of th…
We study quantum antiferromagnetism on the highly frustrated checkerboard lattice, also known as the square lattice with crossings. The quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on this lattice is of interest as a two-dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice magnet. By combining several approaches we conclude that this system is most likely ordered for all values of spin, $S$, with a Neel state for large $S$ giving way to a two-fold degenerate valence-bond solid for smaller $S$. We show next that the Ising antiferromagnet with a weak four-spin exchange, equivalent to square ice with the leading q…
The ground states of Klein type spin models on the pyrochlore and checkerboard lattice are spanned by the set of singlet dimer coverings, and thus possess an extensive ground--state degeneracy. Among the many exotic consequences is the presence of deconfined fractional excitations (spinons) which propagate through the entire system. While a realistic electronic model on the pyrochlore lattice is close to the Klein point, this point is in fact inherently unstable because any perturbation $ε$ restores spinon confinement at $T = 0$. We demonstrate that deconfinement is recovered in the finite--te…
Superconductivity originates from the coupling between charge carriers and bosonic excitations of either phononic or electronic origin. Identifying the most relevant pairing glue is a key step towards a clear understanding of the unconventional superconductivity. Here, by applying the ultrafast optical spectroscopy on the electron-doped cuprates La$_{1.9}$Ce$_{0.1}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$, we discern a bosonic mode of electronic origin that has the strongest coupling with the charge carriers near $T_c$. We argue that this mode is associated with the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, a…
Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) from polycrystalline antiferromagnetic LaMnAsO, LaMnSbO, and BaMnAsF are analyzed using a $J_1-J_2-J_c$ Heisenberg model in the framework of the linear spin-wave theory. All three systems show clear evidence that the nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions within the Mn square lattice layer ($J_1$ and $J_2$) are both antiferromagnetic (AFM). However, for all compounds studied the competing interactions have a ratio of $2J_2/J_1 < 1$, which favors the square lattice checkerboard AFM structure over the stripe AFM structure. The inter-plane coupling $J_c…
Motivated by recent experimental processes, we systemically investigate strongly correlated spin-1 ultracold bosons trapped in a three-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field. Based on a recently developed bosonic dynamical mean-field theory (BDMFT), we map out complete phase diagrams of the system for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions, where various phases are found as a result of the interplay of spin-dependent interaction and quadratic Zeeman energy. For antiferromagnetic interactions, the system demonstrates competing magnetic orders, i…
We examine the effective field theory of the Bethe ansatz integrable Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chains. It shows that the quantum critical theories for the integer spin-S chains should be characterized by the SO(3)level-S Wess-Zumino-Witten model, and classified by the third cohomology group $H^{3}(SO(3),Z)=Z$. Depending on the parity of spin S, this integer classification is further divided into two distinct universality classes, which are associated with two completely different conformal field theories: the even-S chains have gapless bosonic excitations and the odd-S chains have both…
