For the family of multivariate probability distributions variously denoted as unified skew-normal, closed skew-normal and other names, a number of properties are already known, but many others are not, even some basic ones. The present contribution aims at filling some of the missing gaps. Specifically, the moments up to the fourth order are obtained, and from here the expressions of the Mardia's measures of multivariate skewness and kurtosis. Other results concern the property of log-concavity of the distribution, and closure with respect to conditioning on intervals.
We derive the rate of decay of the tail dependence of the bivariate skew normal distribution under the equal-skewness condition θ1 = θ2,= θ, say. The rate of convergence depends on whether θ > 0 or θ < 0. The latter case gives rate asymp- totically identical with the case θ = 0. The asymptotic behaviour of the quantile function for the univariate skew normal is part of the theoretical development.
In this paper, we will discuss the concept of an array variate random variable and introduce a class of skew normal array densities that are obtained through a selection model that uses the array variate normal density as the kernel and the cumulative distribution of the univariate normal distribution as the selection function.
In this article, we propose joint location, scale and skewness models of the skew Laplace normal (SLN) distribution as an alternative model for joint modelling location, scale and skewness models of the skew-t-normal (STN) distribution when the data set contains both asymmetric and heavy-tailed observations. We obtain the maximum likelihood (ML) estimators for the parameters of the joint location, scale and skewness models of the SLN distribution using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. The performance of the proposed model is demonstrated by a simulation study and a real data exampl…
Hallin and Ley [Bernoulli 18 (2012) 747-763] investigate and fully characterize the Fisher singularity phenomenon in univariate and multivariate families of skew-symmetric distributions. This paper proposes a refined analysis of the (univariate) problem, showing that singularity can be more or less severe, inducing $n^{1/4}$ ("simple singularity"), $n^{1/6}$ ("double singularity"), or $n^{1/8}$ ("triple singularity") consistency rates for the skewness parameter. We show, however, that simple singularity (yielding $n^{1/4}$ consistency rates), if any singularity at all, is the rule, in the sens…
We give sufficient identifiability conditions for estimating mixing proportions in two-component mixtures of skew normal distributions with one known component. We consider the univariate case as well as two multivariate extensions: a multivariate skew normal distribution (MSN) by Azzalini and Dalla Valle (1996) and the canonical fundamental skew normal distribution (CFUSN) by Arellano-Valle and Genton (2005). The characteristic function of the CFUSN distribution is additionally derived.
We establish an identity for E f (Y) -E f (X), when X and Y both have matrix variateskew-normal distributions and the function f fulfills some weak conditions. Thecharacteristic function of matrix variate skew normal distribution is then derived. Finally,we make use of it to derive some necessary and sucient conditions for the comparisonof matrix variate skew-normal distributions under six di erent orders, such as usualstochastic order, convex order, increasing convex order, upper orthant order, directionally convex order and supermodular order.
This paper develops recurrence relations for integrals that relate the density of multivariate extended skew-normal (ESN) distribution, including the well-known skew-normal (SN) distribution introduced by Azzalini and Dalla-Valle (1996) and the popular multivariate normal distribution. These recursions offer a fast computation of arbitrary order product moments of the multivariate truncated extended skew-normal and multivariate folded extended skew-normal distributions with the product moments as a byproduct. In addition to the recurrence approach, we realized that any arbitrary moment of the …
Consider testing normality against a one-parameter family of univariate distributions containing the normal distribution as the boundary, e.g., the family of $t$-distributions or an infinitely divisible family with finite variance. We prove that under mild regularity conditions, the sample skewness is the locally best invariant (LBI) test of normality against a wide class of asymmetric families and the kurtosis is the LBI test against symmetric families. We also discuss non-regular cases such as testing normality against the stable family and some related results in the multivariate cases.
In this paper a new type of alpha skew distribution is proposed under Balakrishnan Mechanism and some of its related distributions are investigated. The moments and distributional properties are also studied. Suitability of the proposed distribution is tested by conducting data fitting experiments and model adequacy is checked via AIC, BIC in comparison with some related distributions. Likelihood ratio test is carried out to discriminate between normal and proposed distribution.
This paper mainly focuses on studying the Shannon Entropy and Kullback-Leibler divergence of the multivariate log canonical fundamental skew-normal (LCFUSN) and canonical fundamental skew-normal (CFUSN) families of distributions, extending previous works. We relate our results with other well known distributions entropies. As a byproduct, we also obtain the Mutual Information for distributions in these families. Shannon entropy is used to compare models fitted to analyze the USA monthly precipitation data. Kullback-Leibler divergence is used to cluster regions in Atlantic ocean according to th…
In this paper we have introduced a generalized version of alpha beta skew normal distribution in the same line of Sharafi et al. (2017) and investigated some of its basic properties. The extensions of the proposed distribution have also been studied. The appropriateness of the proposed distribution has been tested by comparing the values of Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) with the values of some other known related distributions for better model selection. Likelihood ratio test has been used for discriminating between nested models.
The present paper is a sequel to and generalization of Fung and Seneta (2016) whose main result gives the asymptotic behaviour as $ u \to 0^{+}$ of $λ_L(u) = P(X_1 \leq F_1^{-1}(u) | X_2 \leq F_2^{-1}(u)),$ when $\bf{X} \sim SN_2(\boldsymbolα, R)$ with $α_1 = α_2 = α,$ that is: for the bivariate skew normal distribution in the equi-skew case, where $R$ is the correlation matrix, with off-diagonal entries $ρ,$ and $F_i(x), i=1,2$ are the marginal cdf's of $\textbf{X}$. A paper of Beranger et al. (2017) enunciates an upper-tail version which does not contain the constraint $α_1=α_2= α$ but requi…
In this paper, the multivariate tail covariance (MTCov) for generalized skew-elliptical distributions is considered. Some special cases for this distribution, such as generalized skew-normal, generalized skew student-t, generalized skew-logistic and generalized skew-Laplace distributions, are also considered. In order to test the theoretical feasibility of our results, the MTCov for skewed and non skewed normal distributions are computed and compared. Finally, we give a special formula of the MTCov for generalized skew-elliptical distributions.
In this study by considering Balakrishnan mechanism a new form of alpha skew distribution is proposed and properties are investigated. The suitability of the proposed distribution has tested at the end with appropriate data fitting experiment and then comparing the values of Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) with the values of some other related distributions. Likelihood ratio test is carried out for nested models, that is, for Laplace and the proposed distributions. Keywords: Skew Distribution, Alpha-Skew Distribution, Bimodal Distribution, Alpha-Ske…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behaviors of the extreme of mixed skew-t distribution. We considered limits on distribution and density of maximum of mixed skew-t distribution under linear and power normalization, and further derived their higher-order expansions, respectively. Examples are given to support our findings.
In longitudinal studies, repeated measures are collected over time and hence they tend to be serially correlated. In this paper we consider an extension of skew-normal/independent linear mixed models introduced by Lachos et al. (2010), where the error term has a dependence structure, such as damped exponential correlation or autoregressive correlation of order p. The proposed model provides flexibility in capturing the effects of skewness and heavy tails simultaneously when continuous repeated measures are serially correlated. For this robust model, we present an efficient EM-type algorithm fo…
In this paper, we compute doubly truncated moments for the selection elliptical (SE) class of distributions, which includes some multivariate asymmetric versions of well-known elliptical distributions, such as, the normal, Student's t, slash, among others. We address the moments for doubly truncated members of this family, establishing neat formulation for high order moments as well as for its first two moments. We establish sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of these truncated moments. Further, we propose optimized methods able to deal with extreme setting of the parameters…
In this paper, an alpha-beta-skew-logistic distribution is proposed following the same methodology as those of alpha-beta-skew-normal of Shafiei et al. (2016) and investigated some of its related distributional properties. Finally, the validity of our proposed distribution has tested by considering three real life applications and comparing the values of Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) with the values of some other related distributions. Likelihood ratio test is used for discriminating between logistic and the proposed distributions. Keywords: Skew D…
In this paper, a new mixture family of multivariate normal distributions, formed by mixing multivariate normal distribution and skewed distribution, is constructed. Some properties of this family, such as characteristic function, moment generating function, and the first four moments are derived. The distributions of affine transformations and canonical forms of the model are also derived. An EM type algorithm is developed for the maximum likelihood estimation of model parameters. We have considered in detail, some special cases of the family, using standard gamma and standard exponential mixt…
The $G$-expectation framework is a generalization of the classical probabilistic system motivated by Knightian uncertainty, where the $G$-normal plays a central role. However, from a statistical perspective, $G$-normal distributions look quite different from the classical normal ones. For instance, its uncertainty is characterized by a set of distributions which covers not only classical normal with different variances, but additional distributions typically having non-zero skewness. The $G$-moments of $G$-normals are defined by a class of fully nonlinear PDEs called $G$-heat equations. To und…
We derive the asymptotic rate of decay to zero of the tail dependence of the bivariate skew Variance Gamma (VG) distribution under the equal-skewness condition, as an explicit regularly varying function. Our development is in terms of a slightly more general bivariate skew Generalized Hyperbolic (GH) distribution. Our initial reduction of the bivariate problem to a univariate one is motivated by our earlier study of tail dependence rate for the bivariate skew normal distribution

Skew-Gaussian processes (SkewGPs) extend the multivariate Unified Skew-Normal distributions over finite dimensional vectors to distribution over functions. SkewGPs are more general and flexible than Gaussian processes, as SkewGPs may also represent asymmetric distributions. In a recent contribution we showed that SkewGP and probit likelihood are conjugate, which allows us to compute the exact posterior for non-parametric binary classification and preference learning. In this paper, we generalize previous results and we prove that SkewGP is conjugate with both the normal and affine probit likel…
Although there is ample work in the literature dealing with skewness in the multivariate setting, there is a relative paucity of work in the matrix variate paradigm. Such work is, for example, useful for modelling three-way data. A matrix variate skew-t distribution is derived based on a mean-variance matrix normal mixture. An expectation-conditional maximization algorithm is developed for parameter estimation. Simulated data are used for illustration.
In this paper, we focus on multivariate doubly truncated first two moments of generalized skew-elliptical (GSE) distributions and derive explicit expressions for them. It includes many useful distributions, for examples, generalized skew-normal (GSN), generalized skew-Laplace (GSLa), generalized skew-logistic (GSLo) and generalized skew student-$t$ (GSSt) distributions, all as special cases. We also give formulas of multivariate doubly truncated expectation and covariance for GSE distributions. As applications, we show the results of multivariate tail conditional expectation (MTCE) and multiva…
