In the framework of spatially covariant gravity, it is natural to extend a gravitational theory by putting the lapse function $N$ and the spatial metric $h_{ij}$ on an equal footing. We find two sufficient and necessary conditions for ensuring two physical degrees of freedom (DoF) for the theory with the lapse function being dynamical by Hamiltonian analysis. A class of quadratic actions with only two DoF is constructed. In the case that the coupling functions depend on $N$ only, we find that the spatial curvature term cannot enter the Lagrangian and thus this theory possesses no wave solution and cannot recover general relativity (GR). In the case that the coupling functions depend on the spatial derivatives of $N$, we perform a spatially conformal transformation on a class of quadratic actions with nondynamical lapse function to obtain a class of quadratic actions with $\dot{N}$. We confirm this theory has two DoF by checking the two sufficient and necessary conditions. Besides, we find that a class of quadratic actions with two DoF can be transformed from GR by disformal transformation.
We investigate a large class of gravity theories that respect spatial covariance, and involve kinetic terms for both the spatial metric and the lapse function. Generally such kind of theories propagate four degrees of freedom, one of which is an unwanted scalar mode. Through a detailed Hamiltonian analysis, we find that the condition requiring the kinetic terms to be degenerate is not sufficient to evade the unwanted scalar mode in general. This is because the primary constraint due to the degeneracy condition does not necessarily induce a secondary constraint, if the mixing terms between temp…
We investigate the scalar perturbations in a class of spatially covariant gravity theory with a dynamical lapse function. Generally, there are two scalar degrees of freedom due to the presence of the velocity of the lapse function. We treat the scalar perturbations as analogues of those in a two-field inflationary mode, in which one is light mode and the other is the heavy mode. This is justified by the fact that the scalar mode due to the dynamical lapse function becomes infinitely heavy in the limit when the lapse function reduces to be an auxiliary variable. The standard approaches of multi…
We perform the Hamiltonian constraint analysis for a wide class of gravity theories that are invariant under spatial diffeomorphism. With very general setup, we show that different from the general relativity, the primary and secondary constraints associated with the lapse function $N$ become second class, as long as the lapse function $N$ enters the Hamiltonian nonlinearly. This fact implies that there are three degrees of freedom are propagating, of which two correspond to the usual tensor type transverse and traceless gravitons, and one is the scalar type graviton. By restoring the full spa…
We make a perturbative analysis of the number of degrees of freedom in a large class of metric theories respecting spatial symmetries, of which the Lagrangian includes kinetic terms of both the spatial metric and the lapse function. We show that, as long as the kinetic terms are degenerate, the theory propagates a single scalar mode at the linear order in perturbations around a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. Nevertheless, an unwanted mode will reappear pathologically, either at nonlinear orders around the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background, or at linear order around an inhomogeneous…
We investigate the correspondence between generally covariant higher derivative scalar-tensor theory and spatially covariant gravity theory. The building blocks are the scalar field and spacetime curvature tensor together with their generally covariant derivatives for the former, and the spatially covariant geometric quantities together with their spatially covariant derivatives for the later. In the case of a single scalar degree of freedom, they are transformed to each other by gauge fixing and recovering procedures, of which we give the explicit expressions. We make a systematic classificat…
We investigate the ghostfree scalar-tensor theory with a timelike scalar field, with derivatives of the scalar field up to the third order and with the Riemann tensor up to the quadratic order. We build two types of linear spaces. One is the set of linearly independent generally covariant scalar-tensor monomials, the other is the set of linearly independent spatially covariant gravity monomials. We argue that these two types of linear space are isomorphic to each other in the sense of gauge fixing/recovering procedures. We then identify the subspaces in the spatially covariant gravity, which a…
Within the general framework of spatially covariant theories of gravity, we study the conditions for having only the two tensorial degrees of freedom. Generally, there are three degrees of freedom propagating in the theory, of which two are tensorial and one is of the scalar type. Through a detailed Hamiltonian analysis, we find two necessary and sufficient conditions to evade the scalar type degree of freedom. The first condition implies that the lapse-extrinsic curvature sector must be degenerate. The second condition ensures that the dimension of the phase space at each spacetime point is e…
We make a perturbative analysis of spatially covariant gravity only respecting spatial symmetries, of which the Lagrangian includes the dynamic lapse function and the coupling term of spatial curvature and extrinsic curvature. We show that the theory propagates 2 scalar degrees of freedom, as long as the kinetic terms are degenerate, it propagates a single scalar mode at the linear order. Then we calculate the scalar and tensor power spectra. Finally, we study cosmological perturbations in mimetic gravity in the presence of spatially covariant gravity. The original spatially covariant theory p…
Traditional derivations of general relativity from the graviton degrees of freedom assume space-time Lorentz covariance as an axiom. In this essay, we survey recent evidence that general relativity is the unique spatially-covariant effective field theory of the transverse, traceless graviton degrees of freedom. The Lorentz covariance of general relativity, having not been assumed in our analysis, is thus plausibly interpreted as an accidental or emergent symmetry of the gravitational sector. From this point of view, Lorentz covariance is a necessary feature of low-energy graviton dynamics, not…
We outline the covariant nature of the chaos characterizing the generic cosmological solution near the initial singularity. Our analysis is based on a "gauge" independent ADM-reduction of the dynamics to the physical degrees of freedom, and shows that the dynamics is isomorphic point by point in space to a billiard on a Lobachevsky plane. The Jacobi metric associated to the geodesic flow is constructed and a non-zero Lyapunov exponent is explicitly calculated. The chaos covariance emerges from the independence of the form of the lapse function and the shift vector.
A necessary condition for a generally covariant scalar-tensor theory to be ghostfree is that it contains no extra degrees of freedom in the unitary gauge, in which the Lagrangian corresponds to the spatially covariant gravity. Comparing with analysing the scalar-tensor theory directly, it is simpler to map the spatially covariant gravity to the generally covariant scalar-tensor theory using the gauge recovering procedures. In order to ensure the resulting scalar-tensor theory to be ghostfree absolutely, i.e., no matter if the unitary gauge is accessible, a further covariant degeneracy/constrai…
We provide a Hamiltonian analysis of the Mixmaster Universe dynamics showing the covariant nature of its chaotic behavior with respect to any choice of time variable. We construct the appropriate invariant measure for the system (which relies on the existence of an ``energy-like'' constant of motion) without fixing the time gauge, i.e. the corresponding lapse function. The key point in our analysis consists of introducing generic Misner-Chitré-like variables containing an arbitrary function, whose specification allows one to set up the same dynamical scheme in any time gauge.
We investigate the covariant Hamiltonian symplectic structure of General Relativity for spatially bounded regions of spacetime with a fixed time-flow vector. For existence of a well-defined Hamiltonian variational principle taking into account a spatial boundary, it is necessary to modify the standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian by adding a boundary term whose form depends on the spatial boundary conditions for the gravitational field. The most general mathematically allowed boundary conditions and corresponding boundary terms are shown to be determined by solving a certain equation obta…
The role of the Taub time gauge in cosmology is linked to the use of the densitized lapse function instead of the lapse function in the variational principle approach to the Einstein equations. The spatial metric variational equations then become the Ricci evolution equations, which are then supplemented by the Einstein constraints which result from the variation with respect to the densitized lapse and the usual shift vector field. In those spatially homogeneous cases where the least disconnect occurs between the general theory and the restricted symmetry scenario, the recent adjustment of th…
We investigate invariant canonical transformations of a spatially covariant scalar-tensor theory of gravity, called the XG theory, by which the action or the Hamiltonian and the primary constraints keep their forms invariant. We derive the Hamiltonian in a non perturbative manner and complete the Hamiltonian analysis for all regions of the theory. We confirm that the theory has at most 3 degrees of freedom in all regions of the theory as long as the theory has the symmetry under the spatial diffeormorphism. Then, we derive the invariant canonical transformation by using the infinitesimal trans…

We explore the consequences of assuming that the bounded space-time subsets contain a finite number of degrees of freedom. A physically natural hypothesis is that this number is additive for spatially separated subsets. We show that this assumption conflicts with the Lorentz symmetry of Minkowski space since it implies that a conserved current determines the number of degrees of freedom. However, the entanglement across boundaries can lead to a subadditive property for the degrees of freedom of spatially separated sets. We show that this condition and the Poincare symmetry lead to the Bousso c…

We investigate the cosmological background evolution and perturbations in a general class of spatially covariant theories of gravity, which propagates two tensor modes and one scalar mode. We show that the structure of the theory is preserved under the disformal transformation. We also evaluate the primordial spectra for both the gravitational waves and the curvature perturbation, which are invariant under the disformal transformation. Due to the existence of higher spatial derivatives, the quadratic Lagrangian for the tensor modes itself cannot be transformed to the form in the Einstein frame…

We revisit the problem of building the Lagrangian of a large class of metric theories that respect spatial covariance, which propagate at most two degrees of freedom and in particular no scalar mode. The Lagrangians are polynomials built of the spatially covariant geometric quantities. By expanding the Lagrangian around a cosmological background and focusing on the scalar modes only, we find the conditions for the coefficients of the monomials in order to eliminate the scalar mode at the linear order in perturbations. We find the conditions up to $d=4$ with $d$ the total number of derivatives …
We examine Bousso's covariant entropy bound conjecture in the context of radiation filled, spatially flat, Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models. The bound is violated near the big bang. However, the hope has been that quantum gravity effects would intervene and protect it. Loop quantum cosmology provides a near ideal setting for investigating this issue. For, on the one hand, quantum geometry effects resolve the singularity and, on the other hand, the wave function is sharply peaked at a quantum corrected but smooth geometry which can supply the structure needed to test the bound. We find that th…
The class of covariant gravity theories which have nice ultraviolet behavior and seem to be (super)-renormalizable is proposed. The apparent breaking of Lorentz invariance occurs due to the coupling with the effective fluid which is induced by Lagrange multiplier constrained scalar field. Spatially-flat FRW cosmology for such covariant field gravity may have accelerating solutions. Renormalizable versions of more complicated modified gravity which depends on Riemann and Ricci tensor squared may be constructed in the same way.
Using the existence of a covariant conserved quantity on large perturbation scales in a spatially flat perfect fluid or scalar field universe, we present a general formula for gauge-invariantly defined comoving energy density perturbations which encodes the entire linear perturbation dynamics in a closed time integral. On this basis we discuss perturbation modes in different cosmological epochs.
We investigate the propagation of the gravitational waves in a cosmological background. Based on the framework of spatially covariant gravity, we derive the general quadratic action for the gravitational waves. The spatial derivatives of the extrinsic curvature and the parity-violating terms are systematically introduced. Special attention is paid to the propagation speed of the gravitational waves. We find that it is possible to make the two polarization modes propagate in the same speed, which may differ from that of the light, in the presence of parity-violating terms in the action. In part…
We study spherically symmetric, stationary vacuum configurations in general covariant theory (U(1) extension) of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the projectability condition and an arbitrary coupling constant $λ$, and obtain all the solutions in closed forms. If the gauge field $A$ and the Newtonian prepotential $φ$ do not directly couple to matter fields, the theory is inconsistent with solar system tests for $λ\not=1$, no matter how small $|λ-1|$ is. This is shown to be true also with the most general ansatz of spherical (but not necessarily stationary) configurations. Therefore, to be consiste…
In the present article we analyze the matter-geometry coupled $f(Q,T)$ theory of gravity. We offer the fully covariant formulation of the theory, with which we construct the correct energy balance equation and employ it to conduct a dynamical system analysis in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We consider three different functional forms of the $f(Q,T)$ function, specifically, $f(Q,T)=αQ+ βT$, $f(Q,T)=αQ+ βT^2$, and $f(Q,T)=Q+ αQ^2+ βT$ . We attempt to investigate the physical capabilities of these models to describe various cosmological epochs. We calculate Frie…
The dynamics of perfect fluid spacetime geometries which exhibit {\em Local Rotational Symmetry} (LRS) are reformulated in the language of a $1+\,3$ "threading" decomposition of the spacetime manifold, where covariant fluid and curvature variables are used. This approach presents a neat alternative to the orthonormal frame formalism. The dynamical equations reduce to a set of differential relations between purely scalar quantities. The consistency conditions are worked out in a transparent way. We discuss their various subcases in detail and focus in particular on models with higher symmetries…

We provide evidence that general relativity is the unique spatially covariant effective field theory of the transverse, traceless graviton degrees of freedom. The Lorentz covariance of general relativity, having not been assumed in our analysis, is thus plausibly interpreted as an accidental or emergent symmetry of the gravitational sector.
We propose a step-by-step manual for the construction of alternative theories of gravity, perturbatively as well as nonperturbatively. The construction is guided by no more than two fundamental principles that we impose on the gravitational dynamics: invariance under spacetime diffeomorphisms and causal compatibility with given matter dynamics, provided that spacetime is additionally endowed with matter fields. The developed framework then guides the computation of the most general, alternative theory of gravity that is consistent with the two fundamental requirements. Utilizing this framework…
Chamseddine and Mukhanov recently proposed a modified version of general relativity that implements the idea of a limiting curvature. In the spatially flat, homogeneous, and isotropic sector, their theory turns out to agree with the effective dynamics of the simplest version of loop quantum gravity if one identifies their limiting curvature with a multiple of the Planck curvature. At the same time, it extends to full general relativity without any symmetry assumptions and thus provides an ideal toy model for full loop quantum gravity in the form of a generally covariant effective action known …
The Palatini formalism is developed for gravitational theories in flat geometries. We focus on two particularly interesting scenarios. First, we fix the connection to be metric compatible, but we follow a completely covariant approach by imposing the constraints with suitable Lagrange multipliers. For a general quadratic theory we show how torsion naturally propagates and we reproduce the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity as a particular quadratic action that features an additional Lorentz symmetry. We then study the much less explored theories formulated in a geometry with neither…
We propose the most general modified first-order Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, whose action does not contain time derivatives higher than the second order. The Hamiltonian structure of this theory is studied in all the details in the case of the spatially-flat FRW space-time, demonstrating many of the features of the general theory. It is shown that, with some plausible assumptions, including the projectability of the lapse function, this model is consistent. As a large class of such theories, the modified HL $F(R)$ gravity is introduced. The study of its ultraviolet properties shows that its …
Implementing Poincaré's `geometric conventionalism' a scalar Lorentz-covariant gravity model is obtained based on gravitationally modified Lorentz transformations (or GMLT). The modification essentially consists of an appropriate space-time and momentum-energy scaling ("normalization") relative to a nondynamical flat background geometry according to an isotropic, nonsingular gravitational `affecting' function Phi(r). Elimination of the gravitationally `unaffected' S_0 perspective by local composition of space-time GMLT recovers the local Minkowskian metric and thus preserves the invariance of …
A covariant formulation of a theory with a massive graviton and no negative energy state has been recently proposed as an alternative to the usual General Relativity framework. For a spatially flat homogenous and isotropic universe, the theory introduces modified Friedmann equations where the standard matter term is supplemented by four effective fluids mimicking dust, cosmological constant, quintessence and stiff matter, respectively. We test the viability of this massive gravity formulation by contrasting its theoretical prediction to the Hubble diagram as traced by Type Ia Supernovae (SNeIa…
