Combining a precise ab initio electron band structure calculation of the TiO2 rutile structure with the temperature evolution of the Ti mean-square displacements, we reproduce a puzzling temperature increase of the electric field gradient at Ti sites in TiO2, observed experimentally. Our method employs a procedure of averaging two quadrupole electron density components (L = 2) inside a sphere vibrating with the Ti nucleus at its center, where the key factor introducing the temperature dependence is the square root of the Debye-Waller factor. Although the Debye-Waller factor always reduces the corresponding Fourier component, in TiO2 due to the interplay between terms of opposite signs, it results in a net increase of the whole sum with temperature, leading to the growth of the electric field gradient. Quantitatively, we find that the increase of electric field gradient is only half of the experimental value, which we ascribe to anharmonic effects or a strong oxygen position influence. In addition, our method reproduces the unusual temperature dependence of the asymmetry parameter eta, which first decreases with temperature, goes to zero and then increases.
Using the first-principles density-functional approach, magnetic properties of Mn-, Fe-, Co-, and Ni-doped rutile TiO2 were investigated for two different impurity concentrations (25% and 6.25%). Calculations were performed with the Full-Potential Linearized-Augmented Plane Waves (FLAPW) method, assuming that the magnetic impurities substitutionally replace the Ti ions. Our results show that the systems (with the exception of Ni-doped TiO2) are ferromagnetic. We also found that polarization mainly occurs at the impurity sites, and the magnetic moments of the impurities are independent of the i…
Adsorption of Fe on the rutile (110)-surface is investigated by means of {\it ab initio} density functional theory calculations. We discuss the deposition of single Fe atoms, an increasing Fe coverage, as well as the adsorption of small Fe clusters. It is shown that the different interface structures found in experiment can be understood in terms of the adsorption of the Fe atoms landing first on the rutile surface. On the one hand, strong interface bonds form if single Fe atoms are deposited. On the other hand, the Fe-Fe bonds in deposited Fe clusters lead to a three-dimensional growth mode. …
Ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the relative stability of anatase and rutile polymorphs of TiO2 were carried using all-electron atomic orbitals methods with local density approximation (LDA). The rutile phase exhibited a moderate margin of stability of ~ 3 meV relative to the anatase phase in pristine material. From computational analysis of the formation energies of Si, Al, Fe and F dopants of various charge states across different Fermi level energies in anatase and in rutile, it was found that the cationic dopants are most stable in Ti substitutional lattice positi…
Vanadium oxides are among the most promising materials that can be used as electrodes in rechargeable metal-ion batteries. In this work, we systematically investigate thermodynamic, electronic and kinetic properties associated with the insertion of Li, Mg and Al atoms in rutile VO2. Using first-principles calculations, we systematically study the structural evolution and voltage curves of LixVO2, MgxVO2 and AlxVO2 (0<x<1) compounds. The calculated lithium intercalation voltage starts at 3.50 V for single-atom insertion and decreases to 2.23 V for full lithiation, to the LiVO2 compound, which a…
Ab-initio, self-consistent electronic energy bands of rutile TiO2 are reported within the local density functional approximation (LDA). Our first principle, non-relativistic and ground state calculations employed a local density functional approximation (LDA) potential and the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO). Within the framework of the Bagayoko, Zhao, and Williams (BZW) method, we solved self-consistently both the Kohn-Sham equation and the equation giving the ground state charge density in terms of the wave functions of the occupied states. Our calculated band structure shows th…
Titanium dioxide has been extensively studied in recent decades for its important photocatalytic application in environmental purification. The search for a method to narrow the optical band-gap of TiO2 plays a key role for enhancing its photocatalytic application. The optical band gap of epitaxial rutile and anatase TiO2 thin films deposited by helicon magnetron sputtering on sapphire and on SrTiO3 substrates was correlated to the lattice constants estimated from HRTEM images and SAED. The optical band-gap of 3.03 eV for bulk-rutile increased for the thin films to 3.37 on sapphire. The band g…
Electron-correlation effects on cohesive energy, lattice constant and bulk compressibility of rutile are calculated using an ab-initio scheme. A competition between the two groups of partially covalent Ti-O bonds is the reason that the correlation energy does not change linearly with deviations from the equilibrium geometry, but is dominated by quadratic terms instead. As a consequence, the Hartree-Fock lattice constants are close to the experimental ones, while the compressibility is strongly renormalized by electronic correlations.
Room-temperature ferromagnetism has been recently discovered in Co-doped TiO$_2$ rutile. Our $ab$ $initio$ density-functional theory investigations show that the substitutional Co ions incorporated into TiO$_2$ rutile tend to cluster and then the neighboring interstitial sites become energetically favorable for Co to reside. This suggests that a Co-doped rutile containing only substitutional Co is not an appropriate reference bulk system in derterming the local environment of Co in polycrystalline (Ti,Co)O$_2$ rutile. We also find that the interstitial Co is in the low spin state and destroys …
Based on the different covalent versus ionic chemical bonding and isoelectronic rutile CrO2, CrNF is proposed starting from ordered rutile derivative structures subjected to full geometry optimizations. The ground state structure defined from cohesive energies is of MgUO4-type, characterized by short covalent Cr-N and long ionic Cr-F distances. Like CrO2 it is a half-metallic ferromagnet with M = 2 Bohr Magnetons integer magnetization per formula unit with reduced band gap at minority spins. Major differences of magnetic response to pressure characterize CrNF as a soft ferromagnet versus hard …
We present ab initio time-dependent-density-functional calculations and non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the dynamical structure factor of rutile TiO2. Our calculations are in good agreement with experiment and prove the presence of large crystal local-field effects below the Ti M-edge, which yield a sharp loss peak at 14 eV whose intensity features a remarkable non-monotonic dependence on the wave vector. These effects, which impact the excitation spectra in the oxide more dramatically than in transition metals, provide a signature of the underlying electronic structure…
Transition metal oxides are considered promising thermoelectric materials for harvesting high-temperature waste heat due to their stability, abundance and low toxicity. Despite their typically strong ionic character, they can exhibit surprisingly high power factors $σS^2$, as in n-type SrTiO$_3$ for instance. Thus, it is worth examining other transition metal oxides that might surpass the performances of SrTiO$_3$. This theoretical paper investigates the thermoelectric properties of n-type rutile TiO$_2$, which is the most stable phase of titanium oxide up to 2000 K. The electronic structure i…
Elucidating the details of the electron-phonon coupling in semiconductors and insulators is a topic of pivotal interest, as it governs the transport mechanisms and is responsible for various phenomena such as spectral-weight transfers to phonon sidebands and self-trapping. Here, we investigate the influence of the electron-phonon interaction on the excitonic peaks of rutile TiO$_2$, revealing a strong anisotropic polarization dependence with increasing temperature, namely an anomalous blueshift for light polarized along the a-axis and a conventional redshift for light polarized along the c-axi…
We present an ab initio study of the relaxations introduced in TiO2 when a Cd impurity substitutes a Ti atom and the experimental test of this calculation by a perturbed-angular-correlation (PAC) measurement of the orientation of the electric-field gradient (EFG) tensor at the Cd site. The ab-initio calculation predicts strong anisotropic relaxations of the nearest oxygen neighbors of the impurity and a change of the orientation of the largest EFG tensor component, V33, from the [001] to the [110] direction upon substitution of a Ti atom by a Cd impurity. The last prediction is confirmed by th…
The characterization of Pt/TiO2 (Degussa P25) catalyst system using atomic resolution Z-contrast images and electron energy loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope has recently revealed that Pt particles have a strong tendency to nucleate on the rutile phase of TiO2 rather than anatase. Comparative ab initio pseudopotential calculations for Pt and Pt_2 on the stoichiometric and reduced TiO2 surfaces, and oxygen vacancy (V_O) formation energies are performed to address the microscopic origin of this finding. The results, which show that Pt actually binds more strongly…
Silicon thin films for coverages ($θ$) between 0.3 and 3 monolayers have been grown on rutile \ce{TiO2}(110)-(1x1) at room temperature and studied by x-ray and ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopies, Auger electron spectroscopy, and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). A clear evidence of a strong \ce{Si}/\ce{TiO2} interaction consistent with the high affinity of O for Si has been found. The Ti cations on the substrate are reduced, while the Si film is oxidized, yielding \ce{SiO2} and a mixture of silicon suboxides. Neutral Si atoms are observed at a coverage of 3 monolayers. At the inte…
Rutile TiO2 is a paradigmatic transition metal oxide with applications in optics, electronics, photocatalysis, etc., that are subject to pervasive electron-phonon interaction. To understand how energies of its electronic bands, and in general semiconductors or metals where the frontier orbitals have a strong d-band character, depend on temperature, we perform a comprehensive theoretical and experimental study of the effects of electron-phonon (e-p) interactions. In a two-photon photoemission (2PP) spectroscopy study we observe an unusual temperature dependence of electronic band energies withi…
Extensive first principles calculations are carried out to investigate gold-promoted TiO2(110) surfaces in terms of structure optimizations, electronic structure analyses, ab initio thermodynamics calculations of surface phase diagrams, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. All computations rely on density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation (PBE) and account for on-site Coulomb interactions via inclusion of a Hubbard correction, PBE+U, where U is computed from linear response theory. This approach is validated by investigating the interaction between TiO2(110) …
Poly(styrene-alt-maleic acid) adsorption on hydroxyapatite and TiO2 (rutile) was studied using experimental techniques and complemented by \textit{ab initio} simulations of adsorption of a maleic acid segment as a subunit of the copolymer. Ab initio calculations suggest that the maleic acid segment forms a strong covalent bonding to the TiO2 and hydroxyapatite surfaces. If compared to vacuum, the presence of a solvent significantly reduces the adsorption strength as the polarity of the solvent increases. The results of first-principle calculations are confirmed by the experimental measurements…
We report a classical interatomic force field for TiO$_2$, which has been parameterized using density functional theory forces, energies, and stresses in the rutile crystal structure. The reliability of this new classical potential is tested by evaluating the structural properties, equation of state, phonon properties, thermal expansion, and some thermodynamic quantities such as entropy, free energy, and specific heat under constant volume. The good agreement of our results with {\em ab initio} calculations and with experimental data, indicates that our force-field describes the atomic interac…
We determine the stability and properties of interfaces of low-index Au surfaces adhered to TiO2(110), using density functional theory energy density calculations. We consider Au(100) and Au(111) epitaxies on rutile TiO2(110) surface, as observed in experiments. For each epitaxy, we consider several different interfaces: Au(111)//TiO2(110) and Au(100)//TiO2(110), with and without bridging oxygen, Au(111) on 1x2 added-row TiO2(110) reconstruction, and Au(111) on a proposed 1x2 TiO reconstruction. The density functional theory energy density method computes the energy changes on each of the atom…
We report measurements of the diffusion of atomic hydrogen in single crystalline VO2 micro/nanobeams by direct exposure to atomic hydrogen, without catalyst. The atomic hydrogen is generated by a hot filament, and the doping process takes place at moderate temperature (373 K). Undoped VO2 has a metal-to-insulator phase transition at ~340 K between a high-temperature, rutile, metallic phase and a low-temperature, monoclinic, insulating phase with a resistance exhibiting a semiconductor-like temperature dependence. Atomic hydrogenation results in stabilization of the metallic phase of VO2 micro/…
We report a full self-consistent ab initio calculation of the current-voltage curve and the conductance of thiolate capped polyynes in contact with gold electrodes. We find the conductance of polyynes an order of magnitude larger compared with other conjugated oligomers. The reason lies in the position of the Fermi level deep in the HOMO related resonance. With the conductance weakly dependent on the applied bias and almost independent of the length of the molecular chain, polyynes appear as nearly perfect molecular wires.
We have calculated (ab initio) and measured (by spin-echo techniques) the anharmonic self-energy of phonons at the X-point of the Brillouin zone for isotopically pure germanium. The real part agrees with former, less accurate, high temperature data obtained by inelastic neutron scattering on natural germanium. For the imaginary part our results provide evidence that transverse acoustic phonons at the X-point are very long lived at low temperatures, i.e. their probability of decay approaches zero, as a consequence of an unusual decay mechanism allowed by energy conservation.
Ti-Ta-X (X = Al, Sn, Zr) compounds are emerging candidates as high-temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs). The stability of the one-way shape memory effect (1WE), the exploitable pseudoelastic (PE) strain intervals as well as the transformation temperature in these alloys depend strongly on composition, resulting in a trade-off between a stable shape memory effect and a high transformation temperature. In this work, experimental measurements and first-principles calculations are combined to rationalize the effect of alloying a third component to Ti-Ta based HTSMAs. Most notably, an $\textit{…
Titanium-based oxides are abundant, chemically stable, non-toxic, and highly versatile materials, with applications ranging from photovoltaics to catalysis. For rutile and anatase phases of Titanium dioxide (TiO2), the bandgap ranges from 3.0-3.2 eV, which are too large to absorb in the visible range (400 nm - 700 nm), resulting in poor photo-catalytic efficiency. Nitrogen doping into TiO2 has been able to narrow its bandgap, forming an absorption tail in the visible-light region. However, TiO2 has limits to which it can be doped, suggesting investigations of the oxygen-deficient Ti203. Using …
Titanium dioxide is one of the most widely investigated oxides. This is due to its broad range of applications, from catalysis to photocatalysis to photovoltaics. Despite this large interest, many of its bulk properties have been sparsely investigated using either experimental techniques or ab initio theory. Further, some of TiO2's most important properties, such as its electronic band gap, the localized character of excitons, and the localized nature of states induced by oxygen vacancies, are still under debate. We present a unified description of the properties of rutile and anatase phases, …
The theories of flexoelectricity and that of nonlocal elasticity are closely related, and are often considered together when modeling strain-gradient effects in solids. Here I show, based on a first-principles lattice-dynamical analysis, that their relationship is much more intimate than previously thought, and their consistent simultaneous treatment is crucial for obtaining correct physical answers. In particular, I identify a gauge invariance in the theory, whereby the energies associated to strain-gradient elasticity and flexoelectrically induced electric fields are individually reference-d…
First-principles calculations show that monatomic strings of carbon have high cohesive energy and axial strength, and exhibit stability even at high temperatures. Due to their flexibility and reactivity, carbon chains are suitable for structural and chemical functionalizations; they form also stable ring, helix, grid and network structures. Analysis of electronic conductance of various infinite, finite and doped string structures reveal fundamental and technologically interesting features. Changes in doping and geometry give rise to dramatic variations in conductance. In even-numbered linear c…
A hybrid ab initio theoretical approach for examining thermal properties in magnetic systems of unknown entropy is presented. Commonly used theoretical approaches interrogate thermal properties from Gibbs/Helmholtz free energies, which require an accurate model of magnetic interactions. The present approach avoids this requirement by instead calculating system pressure from thermally disordered microstates that properly incorporate vibrational and spin subsystems at each temperature as well as the coupling between these subsystems. In place of a specific model for magnetic interactions, the ap…
We describe magneto-, baro- and elastocaloric effects (MCEs, BCEs and eCEs) in materials which possess both discontinuous (first-order) and continuous (second-order) magnetic phase transitions. Our ab initio theory of the interacting electrons of materials in terms of disordered local moments (DLMs) has produced explicit mechanisms for the drivers of these transitions and here we study associated caloric effects in three case studies where both types of transition are evident. Our earlier work had described FeRh's magnetic phase diagram and large MCE. Here we present calculations of its substa…
Magnetic insulators are often antiferromagnetic (AFM) and layered AFM compounds usually show low ordering temperature. On the other hand, layered ferromagnetic (FM) insulators with high-TC are very rare although they could be quite useful for spintronic applications. Here, using crystal field level analysis in combination with density functional theory calculations as well as Monte Carlo simulations, we predict that the layered insulator Sr2NiRuO4 would have a strong FM coupling with TC as high as 240 K. The tetragonal crystal field in the Ni-O-Ru square plane stabilizes the S=1/2 Ni+ and S=3/…
The unusual Raman spectrum of MgB$_2$ and its formidable temperature dependence are successfully reproduced by means of a parameter-free \emph{ab initio} nonadiabatic theory that accounts for the electron-hole pair scattering mechanisms with the system phonons. This example turns out to be a prototypical case where a strong nonadiabatic renormalization of the phonon frequency is partially washed out by the aforementioned scattering events, bringing along a characteristic temperature dependence. Both electron-hole pair lifetime and energy renormalization effects due to dynamical electron-phonon…
We investigate tunable electric polarization and electronic structure of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) allotropes of selenium, which are formed from their constituent one-dimensional (1D) structures through an inter-chain interaction facilitated by the multi-valence nature of Se. Our em ab initio calculations reveal that different quasi-2D Se allotropes display different types of electric polarization, including ferroelectric (FE) polarization normal to the chain direction in alpha and delta allotropes, non-collinear ferrielectric (FiE) polarization along the chain axis in tau-Se, and anti-…
Helium atom scattering (HAS) studies of the H-covered Mo(110) and W(110) surfaces reveal a twofold anomaly in the respective dispersion curves. In order to explain this unusual behavior we performed density functional theory calculations of the atomic and electronic structure, the vibrational properties, and the spectrum of electron-hole excitations of those surfaces. Our work provides evidence for hydrogen adsorption induced Fermi surface nesting. The respective nesting vectors are in excellent agreement with the HAS data and recent angle resolved photoemission experiments of the H-covered al…
Intermetallic compounds with sizable band gaps are attractive for their unusual properties but rare. Here, we present a new family of stable semiconducting quaternary Heusler compounds, designed and discovered by means of high-throughput \textit{ab initio} calculations based on the 18-electron rule. The 99 new semiconductors reported here adopt the ordered quaternary Heusler structure with the prototype of LiMgSnPd (F$\bar{\mathbf{4}}$3m, No.\,216) and contain 18 valence electrons per formula unit. They are realized by filling the void in the half Heusler structure with a small and electroposi…
We present the results of ab initio modeling of structure of dilute Ti-Fe, a typical representative of quenched Ti-based transition-metal alloys. We have demonstrated that beyond the solubility limit this alloy cannot be described in common terms of substitutional and interstitial alloys. Instead, very stable local clusters are formed in both low-temperature hcp and high-temperature bcc phases of alloys, with almost identical local structures. This gives an example of geometrically frustrated state and explains unusual concentration behavior of Mössbauer spectra discovered long ago for this sy…
C-H-N-O system is central for organic chemistry and biochemistry, and plays a major role in planetary science (dominating the composition of "ice giants" Uranus and Neptune). The inexhaustible chemical diversity of this system at normal conditions explains it as the basis of all known life, but the chemistry of this system at high pressures and temperatures of planetary interiors is poorly known. Using ab initio evolutionary algorithm USPEX, we performed an extensive study of the phase diagram of the C-H-N-O system at pressures of 50, 200, and 400 GPa and temperatures up to 3000 K. Eight novel…
