In this paper, we prove that the kappa distribution is the stationary solution of the Vlasov-Poisson system in an inhomogeneous plasma under the polytropic equation of state and an assumption restricting the local velocity distribution to a specific mathematical form. The profiles of density, temperature, and electric potential are obtained theoretically. The kappa index can be determined if the initial state is known. In order to verify the theory, particle-in-cell simulations are made and the results show excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions for density, temperature, and velocity distributions of electrons. It is shown that the electron velocity distribution of spatially inhomogeneous plasma evolves from an initial Maxwellian to the final kappa distribution. It is also found that the value of kappa index in the final stationary state depends on the initial state of plasma.
We combine different measurements of the polytropic index of the proton plasma in the heliosphere: i) near-adiabatic index in the inner heliosphere ~1AU, ii) subadiabatic indices in the outer heliosphere ~20-40AU, and iii) near-zero indices in the inner heliosheath. These observations are unified by a single theoretical model of the polytropic index throughout its radial extent in the heliosphere; the corresponding fitting reveals the decreasing trend of the polytropic index with increasing heliocentric distance R. We anticipate that with increasing R, (i) the Debye length and mean-free-path d…
The paper develops a theoretical relationship between the polytropic index and the temperature anisotropy that may characterize space plasmas. The derivation is based on the correlation among the kinetic energies of particles with velocities described by anisotropic kappa distributions. The correlation coefficient depends on the effective dimensionality of the velocity distribution function, having its shape determined by the temperature anisotropies caused by the ambient magnetic field; on the other hand, the effective dimensionality is directly dependent on the polytropic index. This analysi…
The polytropic process characterizes the thermodynamics of space plasma particle populations. The polytropic index, $γ$, is particularly important as it describes the thermodynamic behavior of the system by quantifying the changes in temperature as the system is compressed or expanded. Using Wind spacecraft plasma and magnetic field data during $01/1995 - 12/2018$, we investigate the thermodynamic evolution in 336 Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection (ICME) events. For each event, we derive the index $γ$ in the sheath and magnetic ejecta structures, along with the pre- and post- event regions.…
A self-consistent model is presented for performing steady-state fully kinetic Particle-in-Cell simulations of magnetised plasma plumes. An energy-based electron reflection prevents the numerical pump instability associated with a typical open-outflow boundary, and is shown to be sufficiently general that both the plume kinetics and plasma potential demonstrate domain independence (within 4%). This is upheld by non-stationary Robin-type boundary conditions on the Poisson's equation, coupled to a capacitive circuit that allows physical evolution of the downstream potential drop in the transient…
This work extends the one-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic imploding spherical argon plasma liner simulations of T. J. Awe et al. [Phys. Plasmas 18, 072705 (2011)] by using a detailed tabular equation-of-state (EOS) model, whereas Awe et al. used a polytropic EOS model. Results using the tabular EOS model give lower stagnation pressures by a factor of 3.9-8.6 and lower peak ion temperatures compared to the polytropic EOS results. Both local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE EOS models were used in this work, giving similar results on stagnation pressure. The lower stagnation pressu…
Heat capacities at fixed volume and pressure as a function of the degree of ionization are graphically depicted as functions of reciprocal temperature and ionization degree. The polytropic index is calculated as a function of the same variables; as it is not constant a partially ionized plasma can be only approximately polytropic fluid. In parallel, it is launched the idea that Alfvén waves can be used to heat the plasma in a propulsion jet with magnetic nozzle.

Models of covariant linear electromagnetic constitutive relations are formulated that have wide applicability to the computation of susceptibility tensors for dispersive and inhomogeneous media. A perturbative framework is used to derive a linear constitutive relation for a globally neutral plasma enabling one to describe in this context a generalized Landau damping mechanism for non-stationary inhomogeneous plasma states.
Recent Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of the relativistic jet in the M87 radio galaxy at 43 GHz show gradual relativistic acceleration of the plasma and suggest a linear dependence of Lorentz factor on jet radius at scales up to 8 marcsec (0.65 pc) from the core (2.5 marcsec in projection). General analysis of integrals of motion being unaltered along the jet and reflecting fundamental conservation laws shows that the above dependence implies a polytropic equation of state with index 4/3. The inferred value of the polytropic index appears independent of the exact nature of forc…
For a plasma in a stationary homogeneous turbulence, the Fokker-Planck equation is derived from the nonlinear Vlasov equation by introducing the entropy principle. The ensemble average in evaluating the kinetic diffusion tensor, whose symmetry has been proved, can be computed in a straightforward way when the fluctuating particle trajectories are provided. As an application, it has been shown that a mean electric filed can drive a particle flux through the Stokes-Einstein relation, independent of the details of turbulence.
A nonlinear dispersion of a general stationary wave in collisionless plasma is obtained in a non-differential form from a single-particle oscillation-center Hamiltonian. For electrostatic oscillations in nonmagnetized plasma, considered as a paradigmatic example, the linear dielectric function is generalized, and the trapped particle contribution to the wave frequency shift $Δω$ is found analytically as a function of the wave amplitude $a$. Smooth distributions yield $Δω\sim a^{1/2}$, as usual. However, beam-like distributions of trapped electrons result in different power laws, or even a loga…
The derivation of the helicon dispersion relation for a uniform plasma with stationary ions subject to a constant background magnetic field is reexamined in terms of the potential formulation of electrodynamics. Under the same conditions considered by the standard derivation, the nonlinear self-coupling between the perturbed electron flow and the potential it generates is addressed. The plane wave solution for general propagation vector is determined for all frequencies and expressed in terms of a vector phasor. The behavior of the solution as described in vacuum units depends upon the ratio o…
Using high resolution kinetic (VPPM-OMP 1.0) and fluid (BOUT++) solvers, evolution of long-wavelength electron plasma wave (EPW) in the presence of stationary periodic ion background non-uniformity is investigated. Mode coupling dynamics between long-wavelength EPW mode of scale k and ion inhomogeneity of scale $k_{0}$ is illustrated. Validity of well known Bessel function $J_{n}(x)$ scaling in the cold plasma approximation (i.e., when phase velocity $ω/k >> v_{thermal}$) along-with the effect of ion inhomogeneity amplitude (A) on temporal evolution of energy density in the long-wavelength EPW…
A theoretical framework is presented which allows to quantitatively predict the final stationary state achieved by a non-neutral plasma during a process of collisionless relaxation. As a specific application, the theory is used to study relaxation of charged-particles beams. It is shown that a fully matched beam relaxes to the Lynden-Bell distribution. However, when a mismatch is present and the beam oscillates, parametric resonances lead to a core-halo phase separation. The approach developed accounts for both the density and the velocity distributions in the final stationary state.
Within the kinetic approach velocity and charge distributions of grains in stationary dusty plasmas are calculated and the relations between the effective temperatures of such distributions and plasma parameters are established. It is found that the effective temperature which determines the velocity grain distribution could be anomalously large due to the action of accelerating ionic bombarding force. The possibility to apply the results obtained to the explanation of the increasing grain temperature in the course of the Coulomb-crystal melting by reduction of the gas pressure is discussed. T…
The standard equilibrium equation for magnetized plasma is extended to account for the magnetic polarization force. A factor of the pressure gradient arising from the magnetic decomposition of the Hall term survives the limit of vanishing magnetization and is canceled by a contribution from the magnetic polarization force, such that the proposed equation reduces to the standard form in the free current limit. Comparison of the solutions for an axially symmetric plasma column indicates agreement with the free current limit for vanishing magnetization and variation in the field and current profi…
In this paper, we address the theoretical resolution of the Vlasov-Gauss system from the linear regime to the strongly nonlinear one, when significant trapping has occurred. The electric field is that of a sinusoidal electron plasma wave (EPW) which is assumed to grow from the noise level, and to keep growing at least up to the amplitude when linear theory in no longer valid (while the wave evolution in the nonlinear regime may be arbitrary). The ions are considered as a neutralizing fluid, while the electron response to the wave is derived by matching two different techniques. We make use of …
Starting from the given passive particle equilibrium particle cylindrical profiles, we built self-consistent stationary conditions of the Maxwell-Vlasov equation at thermodynamic equilibrium with non-flat density profiles. The solutions to the obtained equations are then discussed. It appears that the presence of an azimuthal (poloidal) flow in the plasma can insure radial confinement, while the presence of a longitudinal (toroidal) flow can enhance greatly the confinement. Moreover in the global physically reasonable situation, we find that no unstable point can emerge in the effective integr…
Nonlinear stationary structures formed in a cold plasma with immobile ions in the presence of a relativistic electron current beam have been investigated analytically in the collisionless limit. These are cold plasma version of the relativistic Berstein-Greene-Kruskal (BGK) waves. The structure profile is governed by the ratio of maximum electrostatic field energy density to the relativistic kinetic energy density of the electron beam, {\it i.e.}, $κ_{R} = E_{m}/ (8 πn_{0} (γ_{0}-1)m_{0} c^{2})^{1/2}$, where $E_{m}$ is the maximum electric field associated with the nonlinear structure and $γ_{…
We investigate in stationary regime on the linear plasma device OMT-2 the methods of plasma heating by electromagnetic waves, interaction of electromagnetic waves with magnetoactive plasma and plasma turbulence and transport processes in the trap. We use ultra-high frequency (UHF) contactless method to fill the open magnetic trap by plasma. We have proposed new method of open magnetic trap filling with plasma. Namely, plasma is injected in the trap along the magnetic field from independent stationary UHF source where plasma is formed in ECR regime. In this paper we present the results of inves…
Observations and numerical simulations of laboratory and space plasmas in almost collisionless regimes reveal anisotropic and non-gyrotropic particle distribution functions. We investigate how such states can persist in the presence of a sheared flow. We focus our attention on the pressure tensor equation in a magnetized plasma and derive analytical self-consistent plasma equilibria which exhibit a novel asymmetry with respect to the magnetic field direction. These results are relevant for investigating, within fluid models that retain the full pressure tensor dynamics, plasma configurations w…
Coagulation growth kinetics of nanoparticles in plasma is affected by inter-particle electrostatic forces due to charging phenomenon. In stationary plasmas, unipolar charging of particles results in retardation of particles growth and may result in limitation on a particle size. We demonstrate opposite effect of enhanced particles growth in atmospheric pressure non-stationary arc discharge. Modeling of the nanoparticles growth kinetics revealed the formation of bipolar charge distribution. As a result, reversed (attractive) Coulomb forces promote formation of micrometer size particles in a mil…
A kinetic treatment is developed for collisionless magnetized plasmas occurring in high-temperature, low-density astrophysical accretion disks, such as are thought to be present in some radiatively-inefficient accretion flows onto black holes. Quasi-stationary configurations are investigated, within the framework of a Vlasov-Maxwell description. The plasma is taken to be axisymmetric and subject to the action of slowly time-varying gravitational and electromagnetic fields. The magnetic field is assumed to be characterized by a family of locally nested but open magnetic surfaces. The slow colli…
We derive the differential equation governing the asymptotic quasi-stationary states of the two dimensional plasma immersed in a strong confining magnetic field and of the planetary atmosphere. These two systems are related by the property that there is an intrinsic constant length: the Larmor radius and respectively the Rossby radius and a condensate of the vorticity field in the unperturbed state related to the cyclotronic gyration and respectively to the Coriolis frequency. Although the closest physical model is the Charney-Hasegawa-Mima (CHM) equation, our model is more general and is rela…
The propagation of nonlinear electron- acoustic waves (EAWs) in an unmagnetized collision- less plasma system consisting of a cold electron fluid, superthermal hot electrons and stationary ions is investigated. A reductive perturbation method is employed to obtain a modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equa- tion for the first-order potential. The small amplitude electron-acoustic solitary wave, e.g., soliton and dou- ble layer (DL) solutions are presented, and the effects of superthermal electrons on the nature of the solitons are also discussed. But the results shows that the weak stationary EA…
The formation of plasma channels with nonuniformity of about +- 3.5% has been demonstrated. The channels had a density of 1.2x10^19 cm-3 with a radius of 15 um and with length >= 2.5 mm. The channels were formed by 0.3 J, 100 ps laser pulses in a nonflowing gas, contained in a cylindrical chamber. The laser beam passed through the chamber along its axis via pinholes in the chamber walls. A plasma channel with an electron density on the order of 10^18 - 10^19 cm-3 was formed in pure He, N2, Ar, and Xe. A uniform channel forms at proper time delays and in optimal pressure ranges, which depend on…
Fluctuations of electric and magnetic fields in the collisionless plasma are found as a solution of the initial value linearized problem. The plasma initial state is on average stationary and homogeneous. When the state is stable, the initial fluctuations decay exponentially and in the long time limit a stationary spectrum of fluctuations is established. For the equilibrium plasma it reproduces the spectrum obtained from the fluctuation-dissipation relation. Fluctuations in the unstable two-stream system are also discussed.
The nonlinear propagation of small but finite amplitude dust ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs) in an ion-beam driven plasma with Boltzmannian electrons, positive ions and stationary charged dust grains, is studied by using the standard reductive perturbation technique (RPT). It is shown that there exist two critical values $(γ_{c1}$ and $γ_{c2})$ of ion-beam to ion phase speed ratio $(γ)$, beyond which the beam generated solitons are not possible. The effects of the parameters, namely $γ$, the ratio of the ion-beam to plasma ion density $(μ_{i})$, the dust to ion density ratio $(μ_{d})$ as well as th…
Strong gradients in plasma flows play a major role in space and astrophysical plasmas. A typical situation is that a static plasma equilibrium is surrounded by a plasma flow, which can lead to strong plasma flow gradients at the separatrices between field lines with different magnetic topologies, e.g., planetary magnetospheres, helmet streamers in the solar corona, or at the boundary between the heliosphere and interstellar medium. Within this work we make a first step to understand the influence of these flows towards the occurrence of current sheets in a stationary state situation. We concen…
A reproducible stationary improved confinement mode (I-mode) has been achieved recently in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, featuring good confinement without particle transport barrier, which could be beneficial to solving the heat flux problem caused by edge localized modes (ELM) and the helium ash problem for future fusion reactors. The microscopic mechanism of sustaining stationary I-mode, based on the coupling between turbulence transition and the edge temperature oscillation, has been discovered for the first time. A radially localized edge temperature ring oscillation …
Non-axisymmetric stationary magnetic perturbations lead to the formation of homoclinic tangles near the divertor magnetic saddle in tokamak discharges. These tangles intersect the divertor plates in static helical structures that delimit the regions reached by open magnetic field lines reaching the plasma column and leading the charged particles to the strike surfaces by parallel transport. In this article we introduce a non-axisymmetric rotating magnetic perturbation to model the time development of the three-dimensional magnetic field of a single-null DIII-D tokamak discharge developing a ro…
Many magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere evolve rather slowly so that they can be assumed as (quasi-)static or (quasi-)stationary and represented via magneto-hydrostatic (MHS) or stationary magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equilibria, respectively. While exact 3D solutions would be desired, they are extremely difficult to find in stationary MHD. We construct solutions with magnetic and flow vector fields that have three components depending on all three coordinates. We show that the non-canonical transformation method produces quasi-3D solutions of stationary MHD by mapping 2D or 2.5D MHS eq…
The stationary state of a spherically symmetric plasma configuration is investigated in the limit of immobile ions and weak collisions. Configurations with small radii are positively charged as a significant fraction of the electron population evaporates during the equilibration process, leaving behind an electron distribution function with an energy cutoff. Such charged plasma configurations are of interest for the study of Coulomb explosions and ion acceleration from small clusters irradiated by ultraintense laser pulses and for the investigation of ion bunches propagation in a plasma.
Full self-consistent stationary Vlasov-Maxwell solutions of magnetically confined plasmas are built for systems with cylindrical symmetries. The stationary solutions are thermodynamic equilibrium solutions. These are obtained by computing the equilibrium distribution function resulting from maximizing the entropy and closing the equations with source terms that are then computed by using the obtained distribution. This leads to a self-consistent problem corresponding to solving a set of two coupled second order non-linear differential equations. Relevant plasma parameters are introduced and a …
Plasma-boundaries floating in an ionized gas are usually negatively charged. They accumulate electrons more efficiently than ions which leads to the formation of a quasi-stationary electron film at the boundaries. We propose, in a colloquial manner, a physisorption-inspired quantum-kinetic description of the build-up of surface charges at inert plasma boundaries and calculate the electron sticking coefficient and the electron desorption time, which play an important role in determining the quasi-stationary surface charge, and about which little is empirically and theoretically known, from a mi…
A stationary wave solution is obtained for the proton driven plasma wake field accelerator (PDPWFA). The wake field excitation by trains of equidistant proton microbunches produced due to self modulational instability has been discussed. Also, considering the necessity of the external magnetic field to control focusing of the beam, studies on the effect of magnetic field on the wake field structures have been done.
The hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations is suitable to describe a magnetized plasma at scales of the order of or larger than proton kinetic scales. An exact stationary solution is presented by revisiting previous results with a uniform-density shear flow, directed either parallel or perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field, and by adapting the solution to the hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell model. A quantitative characterization of the equilibrium distribution function is provided by studying both analytically and numerically the temperature anisotropy and gyrotropy and the heat flux. In both cas…

The kappa-distributed fully ionized plasma with collisional interaction is investigated. The Fokker-Planck equation with Rosenbluth potential is employed to describe such a physical system. The results show that the kappa distribution is not a stationary distribution unless the parameter kappa tends to infinity. The general expressions of collisional relaxation rate of multiple-component plasma with kappa distribution are derived and discussed in specific cases in details. For the purpose of visual illustration, we also give those results numerically in figures. All the results show that the p…
The notion of a two-point susceptibility kernel used to describe linear electromagnetic responses of dispersive continuous media in non-relativistic phenomena is generalized to accommodate the constraints required of a causal formulation in spacetimes with background gravitational fields. In particular the concepts of spatial material inhomogeneity and temporal non-stationarity are formulated within a fully covariant spacetime framework. This framework is illustrated by re-casting the Maxwell-Vlasov equations for a collisionless plasma in a form that exposes a 2-point electromagnetic susceptib…
The solar wind is a magnetized and turbulent plasma. Its turbulence is often dominated by Alfvénic fluctuations and often deemed as nearly incompressible far away from the Sun, as shown by in-situ measurements near 1AU. However, for solar wind closer to the Sun, the plasma $β$ decreases (often lower than unity) while the turbulent Mach number $M_t$ increases (can approach unity, e.g., transonic fluctuations). These conditions could produce significantly more compressible effects, characterized by enhanced density fluctuations, as seen by several space missions. In this paper, a series of 3D MH…
