We study the geometry in the perturbations of principal submodules in the Drury-Arveson space. We show that the perturbations give rise to smooth vector bundles of Hilbert spaces which are equipped with natural Hermitian connections. We compute the associated parallel transport operators and explore properties of the monodromy.
We give a new characterization of the so-called quasi-extreme multipliers of the Drury-Arveson space $H^2_d$, and show that every quasi-extreme multiplier is an extreme point of the unit ball of the multiplier algebra of $H^2_d$.
This is an extended version of a three part mini course on the Drury-Arveson space given as part of the Focus Program on Analytic Function Spaces and their Applications, hosted by the Fields Institute and held remotely. The Drury-Arveson space, also known as symmetric Fock space, is a natural generalization of the classical Hardy space on the unit disc to the unit ball in higher dimensions. It plays a universal role both in operator theory and in function theory. These notes give an introduction to the Drury-Arveson space. They are not intended to give a comprehensive overview of the entire su…
We exhibit Borel probability measures on the unit sphere in $\mathbb C^d$ for $d \ge 2$ which are Henkin for the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space, but not Henkin in the classical sense. This provides a negative answer to a conjecture of Clouâtre and Davidson.
Let H_n^2 denote the Drury-Arveson Hilbert space on the unit ball B_n in C^n, and let M(H_n^2) be its multiplier algebra. We show that for n>=3, the ring M(H_n^2) is not coherent.
We extend the basic elements of Clark's theory of rank-one perturbations of backward shifts, to row-contractive operators associated to de Branges-Rovnyak type spaces $\mathcal H(b)$ contractively contained in the Drury-Arveson space on the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$. The Aleksandrov-Clark measures on the circle are replaced by a family of states on a certain noncommutative operator system, and the backward shift is replaced by a canonical solution to the Gleason problem in $\mathcal H(b)$. In addition we introduce the notion of a "quasi-extreme" multiplier of the Drury-Arveson space and use i…
We characterize the common range of the adjoints of cyclic multiplication operators on the Drury--Arveson space. We show that a function belongs to this common range if and only if its Taylor coefficients satisfy a simple decay condition. To achieve this, we introduce the uniform Smirnov class on the ball and determine its dual space. We show that the dual space of the uniform Smirnov class equals the dual space of the strictly smaller Smirnov class of the Drury-Arveson space, and that this in turn equals the common range of the adjoints of cyclic multiplication operators.
In a purely multi-variable setting (i.e., the issues discussed in this note are not interesting in the single variable operator theory setting), we show that the coincidence of two operator valued Schur class multipliers of a certain kind on the Drury-Arveson space is characterized by the fact that the associated colligations (or a variant, obtained canonically) are `unitarily coincident' in a sense to be made precise in the last section of this article.
We consider the closed algebra $\mathcal{A}_d$ generated by the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space. We identify $\mathcal{A}_d^*$ as a direct sum of the preduals of the full multiplier algebra and of a commutative von Neumann algebra, and establish analogues of many classical results concerning the dual space of the ball algebra. These developments are deeply intertwined with the problem of peak interpolation for multipliers, and we generalize a theorem of Bishop-Carleson-Rudin to this setting by means of Choquet type integral representations. As a byproduct we shed some light o…
We develop a $d$-variable analog of the two-component de Bran-ges-Rovnyak reproducing kernel Hilbert space associated with a Schur-class function on the unit disk. In this generalization, the unit disk is replaced by the unit ball in $d$-dimensional complex Euclidean space, and the Schur class becomes the class of contractive multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space over the ball. We also develop some results on a model theory for commutative row contractions which are not necessarily completely noncoisometric (the case considered in earlier work of Bhattacharyya, Eschmeier and Sarkar)
Recent work has demonstrated that Clark's theory of unitary perturbations of the backward shift restricted to a deBranges-Rovnyak subspace of Hardy space on the disk has a natural extension to the several variable setting. In the several variable case, the appropriate generalization of the Schur class of contractive analytic functions is the closed unit ball of the Drury-Arveson multiplier algebra and the Aleksandrov-Clark measures are necessarily promoted to positive linear functionals on a symmetrized subsystem of the Cuntz-Toeplitz operator system A + A*, where A is the non-commutative disk…
Let $H^2_d$ be the Drury-Arveson space, and let $f\in H^2_d$ have bounded argument and no zeros in $\mathbb{B}_d$. We show that $f$ is cyclic in $H^2_d$ if and only if $\log f$ belongs to the Pick-Smirnov class $N^+(H^2_d)$. Furthermore, for non-vanishing functions $f\in H^2_d$ with bounded argument and $H^\infty$-norm less than 1, cyclicity can also be tested via iterated logarithms. For example, we show that $f$ is cyclic if and only if $\log(1+\log (1/f))\in N^+(H^2_d)$. Thus, a sufficient condition for cyclicity is that $\log(1+\log (1/f))\in H^2_d$. More generally, our results hold for al…
In this work we study what we call Siegel--dissipative vector of commuting operators $(A_1,\ldots, A_{d+1})$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ and we obtain a von Neumann type inequality which involves the Drury--Arveson space $DA$ on the Siegel upper half-space $\mathcal U$. The operator $A_{d+1}$ is allowed to be unbounded and it is the infinitesimal generator of a contraction semigroup $\{e^{-iτA_{d+1}}\}_{τ<0}$. We then study the operator $e^{-iτA_{d+1}}A^α$ where $A^α=A_1^{α_1}\cdots A^{α_d}_d$ for $α\in\mathbb N^d_0$ and prove that can be studied by means of model operators on a weighted $…
Multipliers of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces can be characterized in terms of positivity of $n \times n$ matrices analogous to the classical Pick matrix. We study for which reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces it suffices to consider matrices of bounded size $n$. We connect this problem to the notion of subhomogeneity of non-selfadjoint operator algebras. Our main results show that multiplier algebras of many Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, such as the Dirichlet space and the Drury-Arveson space, are not subhomogeneous, and hence one has to test Pick matrices of arbitrarily large matrix…
Given a directed Cartesian product $\mathscr T$ of locally finite, leafless, rooted directed trees $\mathscr T_1, \ldots, \mathscr T_d$ of finite joint branching index, one may associate with $\mathscr T$ the Drury-Arveson-type $\mathbb C[z_1, \ldots, z_d]$-Hilbert module $\mathscr H_{\mathfrak c_a}(\mathscr T)$ of vector-valued holomorphic functions on the open unit ball $\mathbb B^d$ in $\mathbb C^d$, where $a >0.$ In case all directed trees under consideration are without branching vertices, $\mathscr H_{\mathfrak c_a}(\mathscr T)$ turns out to be the classical Drury-Arveson-type Hilbert mo…
Pick spaces are a class of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces that generalize the classical Hardy space and the Drury--Arveson reproducing kernel spaces. We give characterizations of certain contractively included subspaces of Pick spaces. These generalize the characterization of closed invariant subspaces of Trent and McCullough, as well as results for the Drury--Arveson space obtained by Ball, Bolotnikov and Fang.
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a space of analytic functions on the unit ball $\mathbb B_d$ in $\mathbb C^d$ with multiplier algebra $\mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal{H})$. A function $f\in \mathcal{H}$ is called cyclic if the set $[f]$, the closure of $\{φf:φ\in \mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal{H})\}$, equals $\mathcal{H}$. For multipliers we also consider a weakened form of the cyclicity concept. Namely for $n\in \mathbb N_0$ we consider the classes $$\mathcal{C}_n(\mathcal{H})=\{φ\in \mathrm{Mult}(\mathcal H):φ\ne 0, [φ^n]=[φ^{n+1}]\}.$$ Many of our results hold for $N$:th order radially weighted Besov spaces on $\mathb…
Tensor product of Fock spaces is analogous to the Hardy space over the unit polydisc. This plays an important role in the development of noncommutative operator theory and function theory in the sense of noncommutative polydomains and noncommutative varieties. In this paper we study joint invariant subspaces of tensor product of full Fock spaces and noncommutative varieties. We also obtain, in particular, by using techniques of noncommutative varieties, a classification of joint invariant subspaces of $n$-fold tensor products of Drury-Arveson spaces.
We consider the Arveson-Douglas conjecture on the essential normality of homogeneous submodules corresponding to algebraic subvarieties of the unit ball. We prove that the property of essential normality is preserved by isomorphisms between varieties, and we establish a similar result for maps between varieties that are not necessarily invertible. We also relate the decomposability of an algebraic variety to the problem of establishing the essential normality of the corresponding submodule. These results are applied to prove that the Arveson-Douglas conjecture holds for submodules correspondin…
The main objects under study are quotients of multiplier algebras of certain complete Nevanlinna--Pick spaces, examples of which include the Drury--Arveson space on the ball and the Dirichlet space on the disc. We are particularly interested in the non-commutative Choquet boundaries for these quotients. Arveson's notion of hyperrigidity is shown to be detectable through the essential normality of some natural multiplication operators, thus extending previously known results on the Arveson--Douglas conjecture. We also highlight how the non-commutative Choquet boundaries of these quotients are i…
We show that the Dirichlet space is not a quotient of the Drury-Arveson space on the n-ball for any finite n. The proof is based a quantitative comparison of the metrics induced by the Hilbert spaces
Given a *-homomorphism $σ: C(M)\to \mathscr{L}(\mathcal{H})$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ for a compact metric space $M$, a projection $P$ onto a subspace $\mathcal{P}$ in $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be essentially normal relative to $σ$ if $[σ(φ),P]\in \mathcal{K}$ for $φ\in C(M)$, where $\mathcal{K}$ is the ideal of compact operators on $\mathcal{H}$. In this note we consider two notions of span for essentially normal projections $P$ and $Q$, and investigate when they are also essentially normal. First, we show the representation theorem for two projections, and relate these results to Arve…
We study the ideals of the closure of the polynomial multipliers on the Drury-Arveson space. Structural results are obtained by investigating the relation between an ideal and its weak-$*$ closure, much in the spirit of the corresponding classical facts for the disc algebra. Zero sets for multipliers are also considered and are deeply intertwined with the structure of ideals. Our approach is primarily based on duality arguments.
Guo and the second author have shown that the closure $[I]$ in the Drury-Arveson space of a homogeneous principal ideal $I$ in $\mathbb{C}[z_1,...,z_n]$ is essentially normal. In this note, the authors extend this result to the closure of any principal polynomial ideal in the Bergman space. In particular, the commutators and cross-commutators of the restrictions of the multiplication operators are shown to be in the Schatten $p $-class for $p>n$. The same is true for modules generated by polynomials with vector-valued coefficients. Further, the maximal ideal space $X_I$ of the resulting $C^\as…
Let $\mathcal H$ be the Drury-Arveson or Dirichlet space of the unit ball of $\mathbb C^d$. The weak product $\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H$ of $\mathcal H$ is the collection of all functions $h$ that can be written as $h=\sum_{n=1}^\infty f_n g_n$, where $\sum_{n=1}^\infty \|f_n\|\|g_n\|<\infty$. We show that $\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H$ is contained in the Smirnov class of $\mathcal H$, i.e. every function in $\mathcal H\odot\mathcal H$ is a quotient of two multipliers of $\mathcal H$, where the function in the denominator can be chosen to be cyclic in $\mathcal H$. As a consequence we show that …
In this paper we continue our investigation concerning the hyperbolic geometry on the noncommutative ball $[B(H)^n]_1^-$, where $B(H)$ is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H$, and its implications to noncommutative function theory. The central object is an intertwining operator $L_{B,A}$ of the minimal isometric dilations of $A, B\in [B(H)^n]_1^-$, which establishes a strong connection between noncommutative hyperbolic geometry on $[B(H)^n]_1^-$ and multivariable dilation theory. The goal of this paper is to study the operator $L_{B,A}$ and its connections to the …
