Genetic algorithms, computer programs that simulate natural evolution, are increasingly applied across many disciplines. They have been used to solve various optimisation problems from neural network architecture search to strategic games, and to model phenomena of adaptation and learning. Expertise on the qualities and drawbacks of this technique is largely scattered across the literature or former, motivating an compilation of this knowledge at the light of the most recent developments of the field. In this review, we present genetic algorithms, their qualities, limitations and challenges, as well as some future development perspectives. Genetic algorithms are capable of exploring large and complex spaces of possible solutions, to quickly locate promising elements, and provide an adequate modelling tool to describe evolutionary systems, from games to economies. They however suffer from high computation costs, difficult parameter configuration, and crucial representation of the solutions. Recent developments such as GPU, parallel and quantum computing, conception of powerful parameter control methods, and novel approaches in representation strategies, may be keys to overcome those limitations. This compiling review aims at informing practitioners and newcomers in the field alike in their genetic algorithm research, and at outlining promising avenues for future research. It highlights the potential for interdisciplinary research associating genetic algorithms to pulse original discoveries in social sciences, open ended evolution, artificial life and AI.
In this paper a highly abstracted view on the historical development of Genetic Algorithms for the Traveling Salesman Problem is given. In a meta-data analysis three phases in the development can be distinguished. First exponential growth in interest till 1996 can be observed, growth stays linear till 2011 and after that publications deteriorate. These three phases are examined and the major milestones are presented. Lastly an outlook to future work in this field is infered.
In this article we provide a comprehensive review of the different evolutionary algorithm techniques used to address multimodal optimization problems, classifying them according to the nature of their approach. On the one hand there are algorithms that address the issue of the early convergence to a local optimum by differentiating the individuals of the population into groups and limiting their interaction, hence having each group evolve with a high degree of independence. On the other hand other approaches are based on directly addressing the lack of genetic diversity of the population by in…
At the end of 2020, policy responses to the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak have been shaken by the emergence of virus variants, impacting public health and policy measures worldwide. The emergence of these strains suspected to be more contagious, more severe, or even resistant to antibodies and vaccines, seem to have taken by surprise health services and policymakers, struggling to adapt to the new variants constraints. Anticipating the emergence of these mutations to plan ahead adequate policies, and understanding how human behaviors may affect the evolution of viruses by coevolution, are key challenges…

This paper research review Ant colony optimization (ACO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA), both are two powerful meta-heuristics. This paper explains some major defects of these two algorithm at first then proposes a new model for ACO in which, artificial ants use a quick genetic operator and accelerate their actions in selecting next state. Experimental results show that proposed hybrid algorithm is effective and its performance including speed and accuracy beats other version.
Recently, researchers have applied genetic algorithms (GAs) to address some problems in quantum computation. Also, there has been some works in the designing of genetic algorithms based on quantum theoretical concepts and techniques. The so called Quantum Evolutionary Programming has two major sub-areas: Quantum Inspired Genetic Algorithms (QIGAs) and Quantum Genetic Algorithms (QGAs). The former adopts qubit chromosomes as representations and employs quantum gates for the search of the best solution. The later tries to solve a key question in this field: what GAs will look like as an implemen…

Genetic algorithms (GAs) emulate the process of biological evolution, in a computational setting, in order to generate good solutions to difficult search and optimisation problems. GA-based optimisers tend to be extremely robust and versatile compared to most traditional techniques used to solve optimisation problems. This review paper provides a very brief introduction to GAs and outlines their utility in astronomy and astrophysics.

Recently, we witness a rapid increase in the use of machine learning in self-adaptive systems. Machine learning has been used for a variety of reasons, ranging from learning a model of the environment of a system during operation to filtering large sets of possible configurations before analysing them. While a body of work on the use of machine learning in self-adaptive systems exists, there is currently no systematic overview of this area. Such overview is important for researchers to understand the state of the art and direct future research efforts. This paper reports the results of a syste…
Cryptanalysis of knapsack cipher is a fascinating problem which has eluded the computing fraternity for decades. However, in most of the cases either the time complexity of the proposed algorithm is colossal or an insufficient number of samples have been taken for verification. The present work proposes a Genetic Algorithm based technique for cryptanalysis of knapsack cipher. The experiments conducted prove the validity of the technique. The results prove that the technique is better than the existing techniques. An extensive review has been carried out in order to find the gaps in the existin…
We have employed a recent implementation of genetic algorithms to study a range of standard benchmark functions for global optimization. It turns out that some of them are not very useful as challenging test functions, since they neither allow for a discrimination between different variants of genetic operators nor exhibit a dimensionality scaling resembling that of real-world problems, for example that of global structure optimization of atomic and molecular clusters. The latter properties seem to be simulated better by two other types of benchmark functions. One type is designed to be decept…

In recent years, graph neural networks (GNNs) have gained increasing attention, as they possess the excellent capability of processing graph-related problems. In practice, hyperparameter optimisation (HPO) is critical for GNNs to achieve satisfactory results, but this process is costly because the evaluations of different hyperparameter settings require excessively training many GNNs. Many approaches have been proposed for HPO, which aims to identify promising hyperparameters efficiently. In particular, the genetic algorithm (GA) for HPO has been explored, which treats GNNs as a black-box mode…
We present a model for evolving agents using both genetic and cultural inheritance mechanisms. Within each agent our model maintains two distinct information stores we call the genome and the memome. Processes of adaptation are modeled as evolutionary processes at each level of adaptation (phylogenetic, ontogenetic, sociogenetic). We review relevant competing models and we show how our model improves on previous attempts to model genetic and cultural evolutionary processes. In particular we argue our model can achieve divergent gene-culture co-evolution.
This paper presents several types of evolutionary algorithms (EAs) used for global optimization on real domains. The interest has been focused on multimodal problems, where the difficulties of a premature convergence usually occurs. First the standard genetic algorithm (SGA) using binary encoding of real values and its unsatisfactory behavior with multimodal problems is briefly reviewed together with some improvements of fighting premature convergence. Two types of real encoded methods based on differential operators are examined in detail: the differential evolution (DE), a very modern and ef…
The Schrodinger equation is one of the most important equations in physics and chemistry and can be solved in the simplest cases by computer numerical methods. Since the beginning of the 70s of the last century the computer began to be used to solve this equation in elementary quantum systems, e.g. and in the most complex case a hydrogen-like system. Obtaining the solution means finding the wave function, which allows predicting the physical and chemical properties of the quantum system. However, when a quantum system is more complex than a hydrogen-like system then we must be satisfied with a…
