One of the substantial sources of systematic errors in neutrino oscillation experiments that utilize neutrinos from accelerator sources stems from a lack of precision in modeling single-pion production (SPP). Oscillation analyses rely on Monte Carlo event generators (MC), providing theoretical predictions of neutrino interactions on nuclear targets. Pions produced in these processes provide a significant fraction of oscillation signal and background on both elementary scattering and detector simulation levels. Thus, it is of critical importance to develop techniques that will allow us to accommodate state-of-the-art theoretical models describing SPP into MCs.
In this work, we investigate various algorithms to implement single-pion production models in Monte Carlo event generators. Based on comparison studies, we propose a novel implementation strategy that combines satisfactory efficiency with high precision in reproducing details of theoretical models predictions, including pion angular distributions. The proposed implementation is model-independent, thereby providing a framework that can include any model for SPP. We have tested the new algorithm with the Ghent Low Energy Model for single-pion production implemented in the NuWro Monte Carlo event generator.
We study the Drell-Yan process in the polarized pion-nucleon scattering. We calculate the $U(1)_\text{em}$ gauge invariant hadron tensors. To this end, we have to take into account two diagrams---the standard diagram and an additional one---both diagrams are required to get the gauge invariant hadron tensor. We obtain a new single transverse spin asymmetry that probes gluon poles and chiral-odd distribution functions. The process of pion-nucleon scattering in the limit of large Feynman $x$ is described by a convolution of two non-collinear exclusive-channel distribution amplitudes, which demon…
We discuss how to extract the pomeron-pomeron-$f_2(1270)$ ($\mathbb{P} \mathbb{P} f_2(1270)$) coupling within the tensor-pomeron model. The general $\mathbb{P} \mathbb{P} f_2(1270)$ coupling is a combination of seven basic couplings (tensorial structures). To study these tensorial structures we propose to measure the central-exclusive production of a $π^+ π^-$ pair in the invariant mass region of the $f_2(1270)$ meson. An analysis of angular distributions in the $π^+ π^-$ rest system, using the Collins-Soper (CS) and the Gottfried-Jackson (GJ) frames, turns out to be particularly relevant for …
We study hadronic polarization and the related anisotropy of the dilepton angular distribution for the reaction $πN \to Ne^+e^-$. We employ consistent effective interactions for baryon resonances up to spin-5/2 to compute their contribution to the anisotropy coefficient. We show that the spin and parity of the intermediate baryon resonance is reflected in the angular dependence of the anisotropy coefficient. We present results for the anisotropy coefficient including the $N(1520)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances, which are essential at the collision energy of the recent data obtained by the HADES col…
We study pion production by proton synchrotron radiation in the presence of a strong magnetic field when the Landau numbers of the initial and final protons are $n_{i,f} \sim 10^4 - 10^5$. We find in our relativistic field theory calculations that the pion decay width depends only on the field strength parameter which previously was only conjectured based upon semi-classical arguments. Moreover, we also find new results that the decay width satisfies a robust scaling relation, and that the polar angular distribution of emitted pion momenta is very narrow and can be easily obtained. This scalin…
We perform the first global QCD analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the pion, combining $πA$ Drell-Yan data with leading neutron electroproduction from HERA within a Monte Carlo approach based on nested sampling. Inclusion of the HERA data allows the pion PDFs to be determined down to much lower values of $x$, with relatively weak model dependence from uncertainties in the chiral splitting function. The combined analysis reveals that gluons carry a significantly higher pion momentum fraction, $\sim 30\%$, than that inferred from Drell-Yan data alone, with sea quarks carrying a …
The study of the $τ$-lepton decays into hadrons has contributed to a better understanding of non-perturbative QCD and light-quark meson spectroscopy, as well as to the search of new physics beyond the Standard Model. The two- and three-meson decay modes, considering only those permitted by the Standard Model, are the predominant decays and together with the one-pion mode compose more than $85\%$ of the hadronic $τ$-lepton decay width. In this note we review the theoretical results for these modes implemented in the Monte Carlo event generator TAUOLA and present at the same time a comparison wi…
In two-particle angular correlation measurements the distribution of charged hadron pairs are evaluated as a function of pseudorapidity ($Δη$) and azimuthal ($Δφ$) differences. In these correlations, jets manifest themselves as a near-side peak around $Δη= 0,$ $Δφ= 0$. These correlations can be used to extract transverse momentum ($p_T$) and centrality dependence of the shape of the near-side peak in Pb-Pb collision. The shape of the near-side peak is quantified by the variances of the distribution. The variances are evaluated from a fit combining the peak and the background. In this contribut…
We reanalyze the anomalous angular distribution of lepton pairs produced in a pion-induced Drell-Yan process by taking into account the Glauber gluon effect in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. Compared to the previous study, we adopt the realistic parton distribution functions (PDFs) for a proton from the CTEQ and for a pion from the xFitter, include the QCD evolutions of the strong coupling and the PDFs, and integrate the differential cross section over the kinematic regions for the NA10, E615 and COMPASS experiments. These improvements then allow rigorous confrontations of theoretical result…
The study of pion production in nuclei is important for signal and background determinations in current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. The first step, however, is to understand the pion production reactions at the free nucleon level. We present an exhaustive study of the charged-current and neutral-current neutrino and antineutrino pion production off nucleons, paying a special attention to the angular distributions of the outgoing pion. We show, using general arguments, that parity violation and time-reversal odd correlations in the weak differential cross sections are generated…
The production mechanisms of open strangeness ($K^*$) and open charm ($D^*$) vector mesons in $π^- p$ scattering, namely, $π^- +p \to K^{*0} + Λ$ and $π^- + p \to D^{*-} + Λ_c^+$, are investigated within the modified quark-gluon string model. In order to identify the major reaction mechanisms, we consider the subsequent decays of the produced vector mesons into two pseudoscalar mesons, i.e., $K^* \to K + π$ and $D^* \to D + π$. We found that the decay distributions and density matrix elements are sensitive to the production mechanisms and can be used to disentangle the vector trajectory and ps…
Low energy QCD (below 2 GeV) is a region of resonance dynamics, sometimes lacking satisfactory description as compared to precision of available experimental data. Hadronic $τ$ decays offer a probe for such energy regime. In general, predictions for decays are model dependent, with parameters fitted to experimental results. Parameterizations differ by amount of assumptions and theoretical requirements taken into account. Both model distributions and acquired data samples used for fits are results of complex effort. In this paper, we investigate main parameterizations of $τ$ decay matrix elemen…
Dielectron production in reactions $π^- p \rightarrow n e^+e^-$ and $π^- p \rightarrow n e^+e^- γ$ at energies less than 1 GeV is studied assuming electron-positron pair production to occur in the virtual time-like photon splitting process. Theoretical predictions of the effective mass distribution of dielectrons and their angular dependence are presented. Extraction of the electromagnetic form factor of baryon transition in the time-like region from future experiments of the HADES Collaboration is discussed.
We perform a new Monte Carlo QCD analysis of pion parton distribution functions, including, for the first time, transverse momentum dependent pion-nucleus Drell-Yan cross sections together with $p_{\rm T}$-integrated Drell-Yan and leading neutron electroproduction data from HERA. We assess the sensitivity of the Monte Carlo fits to kinematic cuts, factorization scale, and parametrization choice, and we discuss the impact of the various datasets on the pion's quark and gluon distributions. This study provides the necessary step towards the simultaneous analysis of collinear and transverse momen…
TAUOLA is a Monte Carlo generator dedicated to generating tau-lepton decays and it is used in the analysis of experimental data both at B-factories and LHC. TAUOLA is a long-term project that started in the 90's and has been under development up to now. In this note we discuss the status of the predominant hadronic tau-lepton decays into two ($Br \simeq 25.52\%$) and three pions ($Br \simeq 18.67\%$).
MiniBooNE [1] and MINERvA [2] charge current π + production data in the Delta region are discussed. It is argued that despite the differences in neutrino flux they measure the same dynamical mechanism of pion production and should be strongly correlated. The correlation is clearly seen in the Monte Carlo simulations done with NuWro generator but is missing in the data. Both normalization and the shape of the ratio of measured differential cross sections in pion kinetic energy are different from the Monte Carlo results, in the case of normalization a discrepancy is by a factor of 1.49.
Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles including pions, kaons and (anti-)protons measured by ALICE experiment in the pT range of 0.1-2.5 GeV/c and pseudorapidity less than 0.5 are studied in pp collisions at 900 GeV center of mass energy using modified Hagedorn function with embedded transverse flow velocity and are compared to the predictions of EPOS-LHC, Pythia, QGSJET and Sibyll models. We find that the average transverse flow velocity decreases with increasing the mass of the particle while the kinetic freeze-out temperature extracted from the function increases with the particle…
We present a calculation of the proton momentum and angular momentum decompositions using overlap fermions on a $2+1$-flavor RBC/UKQCD domain-wall lattice at 0.143 fm with a pion mass of 171 MeV which is close to the physical one. A complete determination of the momentum and angular momentum fractions carried by up, down, strange and glue inside the proton has been done with valence pion masses varying from 171 to 391 MeV. We have utilized fast Fourier transform on the stochastic-sandwich method for connected-insertion parts and the cluster-decomposition error reduction technique for disconnec…
Hadronic polarization and the related anisotropy of the dilepton angular distribution are studied for the reaction $πN \rightarrow Ne^+ e^-$. We employ consistent effective interactions for baryon resonances up to spin-5/2, where non-physical degrees of freedom are eliminated, to compute the anisotropy coefficients for isolated intermediate baryon resonances. It is shown that the spin and parity of the intermediate baryon resonance is reflected in the angular dependence of the anisotropy coefficient. We then compute the anisotropy coefficient including the $N(1520)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances, w…
We develop a Monte-Carlo event generator based on combination of a parton production formula including the effects of parton saturation (called the DHJ formula) and hadronization process due to the Lund string fragmentation model. This event generator is designed for the description of hadron productions at forward rapidities and in a wide transverse momentum range in high-energy proton-proton collisions. We analyze transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons as well as identified particles; pion, kaon, (anti-)proton at RHIC energy, and ultra-forward neutral pion spectra from LHCf experimen…
We consider the decay $π^- \to l \, \barν_l$ ($l=e^-,\,μ^-$) in the presence of an arbitrary large uniform magnetic field, using the symmetric gauge. The consequences of the axial symmetry of the problem and the issue of angular momentum conservation are discussed in detail. In particular, we analyze the projection of both the canonical and the mechanical total angular momenta along the direction of the magnetic field. It is found that while the former is conserved in the symmetric gauge, the latter is not conserved in both the symmetric and Landau gauges. We derive an expression for the integ…
