The thinnest possible camera is achieved by removing all optics, leaving only the image sensor. We train deep neural networks to perform multi-class detection and binary classification (with accuracy of 92%) on optics-free images without the need for anthropocentric image reconstructions. Inferencing from optics-free images has the potential for enhanced privacy and power efficiency.

In recent years, the optical 4f system has drawn much attention in building high-speed and ultra-low-power optical neural networks (ONNs). Most optical systems suffer from the misalignment of the optical devices during installment. The performance of ONN based on the optical 4f system (4f-ONN) is considered sensitive to the misalignment in the optical path introduced. In order to comprehensively investigate the influence caused by the misalignment, we proposed a method for estimating the performance of a 4f-ONN in response to various misalignment in the context of the image classification task…

Multiple optical scattering occurs when light propagates in a non-uniform medium. During the multiple scattering, images were distorted and the spatial information they carried became scrambled. However, the image information is not lost but presents in the form of speckle patterns (SPs). In this study, we built up an optical random scattering system based on an LCD and an RGB laser source. We found that the image classification can be improved by the help of random scattering which is considered as a feedforward neural network to extracts features from image. Along with the ridge classificati…
Optical image data have been used by the Remote Sensing workforce to study land use and cover since such data is easily interpretable. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has the characteristic of obtaining images during all-day, all-weather and provides object information that is different from visible and infrared sensors. However, SAR images have more speckle noise and fewer dimensions. This paper presents a method for denoising, feature extraction and compares classifications of Optical and SAR images. The image was denoised using K-Singular Value Decomposition (K-SVD) algorithm. A method to ma…

Deep learning models have gained remarkable performance on a variety of image classification tasks. However, many models suffer from limited performance in clinical or medical settings when data are imbalanced. To address this challenge, we propose a medical-knowledge-guided one-class classification approach that leverages domain-specific knowledge of classification tasks to boost the model's performance. The rationale behind our approach is that some existing prior medical knowledge can be incorporated into data-driven deep learning to facilitate model learning. We design a deep learning-base…

Cervical cancer, one of the most common fatal cancers among women, can be prevented by regular screening to detect any precancerous lesions at early stages and treat them. Pap smear test is a widely performed screening technique for early detection of cervical cancer, whereas this manual screening method suffers from high false-positive results because of human errors. To improve the manual screening practice, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) based computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems have been investigated widely to classify cervical pap cells. Most of the existing researches r…

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification has become a hot topic in the field of remote sensing. In general, the complex characteristics of hyperspectral data make the accurate classification of such data challenging for traditional machine learning methods. In addition, hyperspectral imaging often deals with an inherently nonlinear relation between the captured spectral information and the corresponding materials. In recent years, deep learning has been recognized as a powerful feature-extraction tool to effectively address nonlinear problems and widely used in a number of image processing tas…
We present a hybrid image classifier by mode-selective image upconversion, single pixel photodetection, and deep learning, aiming at fast processing a large number of pixels. It utilizes partial Fourier transform to extract the signature features of images in both the original and Fourier domains, thereby significantly increasing the classification accuracy and robustness. Tested on the MNIST handwritten digit images, it boosts the accuracy from 81.25% to 99.23%, and achieves an 83% accuracy for highly contaminated images whose signal-to-noise ratio is only -17 dB. Our approach could prove use…
This paper describes the transformation of a traditional in-silico classification network into an optical fully convolutional neural network with high-resolution feature maps and kernels. When using the free-space 4f system to accelerate the inference speed of neural networks, higher resolutions of feature maps and kernels can be used without the loss in frame rate. We present FatNet for the classification of images, which is more compatible with free-space acceleration than standard convolutional classifiers. It neglects the standard combination of convolutional feature extraction and classif…

By replacing the lens with a thin optical element, lensless imaging enables new applications and solutions beyond those supported by traditional camera design and post-processing, e.g. compact and lightweight form factors and visual privacy. The latter arises from the highly multiplexed measurements of lensless cameras, which require knowledge of the imaging system to recover a recognizable image. In this work, we exploit this unique multiplexing property: casting the optics as an encoder that produces learned embeddings directly at the camera sensor. We do so in the context of image classific…
Scientists at the Berkeley SETI Research Center are Searching for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) by a new signal detection method that converts radio signals into spectrograms through Fourier transforms and classifies signals represented by two-dimensional time-frequency spectrums, which successfully converts a signal classification problem into an image classification task. In view of the negative impact of background noises on the accuracy of spectrograms classification, a new method is introduced in this paper. After Gaussian convolution smoothing the signals, edge detection functions…
In this paper, we propose two distinct solutions to the problem of Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) classification. In the first approach, we introduce a shallow neural network architecture. This model performs well on classification of the most frequent classes while fails at classifying the less frequent ones. In the second approach, we use transfer learning to re-train the last modified layer of a very deep neural network to improve the generalization ability of the model to the less frequent classes. Our results demonstrate superior abilities of transfer learning in DR classification of less freq…
Microscopic examination of tissues or histopathology is one of the diagnostic procedures for detecting colorectal cancer. The pathologist involved in such an examination usually identifies tissue type based on texture analysis, especially focusing on tumour-stroma ratio. In this work, we automate the task of tissue classification within colorectal cancer histology samples using deep transfer learning. We use discriminative fine-tuning with one-cycle-policy and apply structure-preserving colour normalization to boost our results. We also provide visual explanations of the deep neural network's …
In this extended abstract, we will present and discuss opportunities and challenges brought about by a new deep learning method by AUC maximization (aka \underline{\bf D}eep \underline{\bf A}UC \underline{\bf M}aximization or {\bf DAM}) for medical image classification. Since AUC (aka area under ROC curve) is a standard performance measure for medical image classification, hence directly optimizing AUC could achieve a better performance for learning a deep neural network than minimizing a traditional loss function (e.g., cross-entropy loss). Recently, there emerges a trend of using deep AUC ma…

We propose a deep learning based method for classification of commonly occurring pathologies in chest X-ray images. The vast number of publicly available chest X-ray images provides the data necessary for successfully employing deep learning methodologies to reduce the misdiagnosis of thoracic diseases. We applied our method to the classification of two example pathologies, pulmonary nodules and cardiomegaly, and we compared the performance of our method to three existing methods. The results show an improvement in AUC for detection of nodules and cardiomegaly compared to the existing methods.
This study is to demonstrate deep learning for automated artery-vein (AV) classification in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). The AV-Net, a fully convolutional network (FCN) based on modified U-shaped CNN architecture, incorporates enface OCT and OCTA to differentiate arteries and veins. For the multi-modal training process, the enface OCT works as a near infrared fundus image to provide vessel intensity profiles, and the OCTA contains blood flow strength and vessel geometry features. A transfer learning process is also integrated to compensate for the limitation of available da…

In recent studies in hyperspectral imaging, biometrics and energy analytics, the framework of deep dictionary learning has shown promise. Deep dictionary learning outperforms other traditional deep learning tools when training data is limited; therefore hyperspectral imaging is one such example that benefits from this framework. Most of the prior studies were based on the unsupervised formulation; and in all cases, the training algorithm was greedy and hence sub-optimal. This is the first work that shows how to learn the deep dictionary learning problem in a joint fashion. Moreover, we propose…

End user AI is trained on large server farms with data collected from the users. With ever increasing demand for IOT devices, there is a need for deep learning approaches that can be implemented (at the edge) in an energy efficient manner. The unsupervised learning technique of spike timing dependent plasticity (STDP) using binary activations are used to extract features from spiking input data. Gradient descent (backpropagation) is used only on the output layer to perform the training for classification. The accuracies obtained for …
