This paper reviews the second AIM learned ISP challenge and provides the description of the proposed solutions and results. The participating teams were solving a real-world RAW-to-RGB mapping problem, where to goal was to map the original low-quality RAW images captured by the Huawei P20 device to the same photos obtained with the Canon 5D DSLR camera. The considered task embraced a number of complex computer vision subtasks, such as image demosaicing, denoising, white balancing, color and contrast correction, demoireing, etc. The target metric used in this challenge combined fidelity scores (PSNR and SSIM) with solutions' perceptual results measured in a user study. The proposed solutions significantly improved the baseline results, defining the state-of-the-art for practical image signal processing pipeline modeling.

We present DeepISP, a full end-to-end deep neural model of the camera image signal processing (ISP) pipeline. Our model learns a mapping from the raw low-light mosaiced image to the final visually compelling image and encompasses low-level tasks such as demosaicing and denoising as well as higher-level tasks such as color correction and image adjustment. The training and evaluation of the pipeline were performed on a dedicated dataset containing pairs of low-light and well-lit images captured by a Samsung S7 smartphone camera in both raw and processed JPEG formats. The proposed solution achiev…

Many creative ideas are being proposed for image sensor designs, and these may be useful in applications ranging from consumer photography to computer vision. To understand and evaluate each new design, we must create a corresponding image processing pipeline that transforms the sensor data into a form that is appropriate for the application. The need to design and optimize these pipelines is time-consuming and costly. We explain a method that combines machine learning and image systems simulation that automates the pipeline design. The approach is based on a new way of thinking of the image p…
Complex image processing and computer vision systems often consist of a processing pipeline of functional modules. We intend to replace parts or all of a target pipeline with deep neural networks to achieve benefits such as increased accuracy or reduced computational requirement. To acquire a large amount of labeled data necessary to train the deep neural network, we propose a workflow that leverages the target pipeline to create a significantly larger labeled training set automatically, without prior domain knowledge of the target pipeline. We show experimentally that despite the noise introd…

Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in the working-age population of the world. The main aim of this paper is to improve the accuracy of Diabetic Retinopathy detection by implementing a shadow removal and color correction step as a preprocessing stage from eye fundus images. For this, we rely on recent findings indicating that application of image dehazing on the inverted intensity domain amounts to illumination compensation. Inspired by this work, we propose a Shadow Removal Layer that allows us to learn the pre-processing function for a particular task. We show that learni…
A new open-source image processing pipeline for analyzing camera trap time-lapse recordings is described. This pipeline includes machine learning models to assist human-in-the-loop video segmentation and animal re-identification. We present some performance results and observations on the utility of this pipeline after using it in a year-long project studying the spatial ecology and social behavior of the gopher tortoise.

Using on-demand processing pipelines to generate virtual geospatial products is beneficial to optimizing resource management and decreasing processing requirements and data storage space. Additionally, pre-processed products improve data quality for data-driven analytical algorithms, such as machine learning or deep learning models. This paper proposes a method to integrate virtual products based on integrating open-source processing pipelines. In order to validate and evaluate the functioning of this approach, we have integrated it into a geo-imagery management framework based on Open Data Cu…
High dynamic range (HDR) imaging combines multiple images with different exposure times into a single high-quality image. The image signal processing pipeline (ISP) is a core component in digital cameras to perform these operations. It includes demosaicing of raw color filter array (CFA) data at different exposure times, alignment of the exposures, conversion to HDR domain, and exposure merging into an HDR image. Traditionally, such pipelines cascade algorithms that address these individual subtasks. However, cascaded designs suffer from error propagation, since simply combining multiple steps…

We introduce a novel Deep Network architecture that implements the full feature point handling pipeline, that is, detection, orientation estimation, and feature description. While previous works have successfully tackled each one of these problems individually, we show how to learn to do all three in a unified manner while preserving end-to-end differentiability. We then demonstrate that our Deep pipeline outperforms state-of-the-art methods on a number of benchmark datasets, without the need of retraining.
A major area of growth within deep learning has been the study and implementation of convolutional neural networks. The general explanation within the deep learning community of the robustness of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) within image recognition rests upon the idea that CNNs are able to extract localized features. However, recent developments in fields such as Natural Language Processing are demonstrating that this paradigm may be incorrect. In this paper, we analyze the current state of the field concerning CNN's and present a hypothesis that provides a novel explanation for the r…
Pixel binning is considered one of the most prominent solutions to tackle the hardware limitation of smartphone cameras. Despite numerous advantages, such an image sensor has to appropriate an artefact-prone non-Bayer colour filter array (CFA) to enable the binning capability. Contrarily, performing essential image signal processing (ISP) tasks like demosaicking and denoising, explicitly with such CFA patterns, makes the reconstruction process notably complicated. In this paper, we tackle the challenges of joint demosaicing and denoising (JDD) on such an image sensor by introducing a novel lea…
The best way to combine the results of deep learning with standard 3D reconstruction pipelines remains an open problem. While systems that pass the output of traditional multi-view stereo approaches to a network for regularisation or refinement currently seem to get the best results, it may be preferable to treat deep neural networks as separate components whose results can be probabilistically fused into geometry-based systems. Unfortunately, the error models required to do this type of fusion are not well understood, with many different approaches being put forward. Recently, a few systems h…

This paper outlines the steps taken toward pre-processing the 55,134 images of the MORPH-II non-commercial dataset. Following the introduction, section two begins with an overview of each step in the pre-processing pipeline. Section three expands upon each stage of the process and includes details on all calculations made, by providing the OpenCV functionality paired with each step. The last portion of this paper discusses the potential improvements to this pre-processing pipeline that became apparent in retrospect.

Research in ultrasound imaging is limited in reproducibility by two factors: First, many existing ultrasound pipelines are protected by intellectual property, rendering exchange of code difficult. Second, most pipelines are implemented in special hardware, resulting in limited flexibility of implemented processing steps on such platforms. Methods: With SUPRA we propose an open-source pipeline for fully Software Defined Ultrasound Processing for Real-time Applications to alleviate these problems. Covering all steps from beamforming to output of B-mode images, SUPRA can help improve the reproduc…

The success of deep denoisers on real-world color photographs usually relies on the modeling of sensor noise and in-camera signal processing (ISP) pipeline. Performance drop will inevitably happen when the sensor and ISP pipeline of test images are different from those for training the deep denoisers (i.e., noise discrepancy). In this paper, we present an unpaired learning scheme to adapt a color image denoiser for handling test images with noise discrepancy. We consider a practical training setting, i.e., a pre-trained denoiser, a set of test noisy images, and an unpaired set of clean images.…
A new era of space exploration and exploitation is fast approaching. A multitude of spacecraft will flow in the future decades under the propulsive momentum of the new space economy. Yet, the flourishing proliferation of deep-space assets will make it unsustainable to pilot them from ground with standard radiometric tracking. The adoption of autonomous navigation alternatives is crucial to overcoming these limitations. Among these, optical navigation is an affordable and fully ground-independent approach. Probes can triangulate their position by observing visible beacons, e.g., planets or aste…
Parsing human body into semantic regions is crucial to human-centric analysis. In this paper, we propose a segment-based parsing pipeline that explores human pose information, i.e. the joint location of a human model, which improves the part proposal, accelerates the inference and regularizes the parsing process at the same time. Specifically, we first generate part segment proposals with respect to human joints predicted by a deep model, then part- specific ranking models are trained for segment selection using both pose-based features and deep-learned part potential features. Finally, the be…

Dispatching and receiving logistics goods, as well as transportation itself, involve a high amount of manual efforts. The transported goods, including their packaging and labeling, need to be double-checked, verified or recognized at many supply chain network points. These processes hold automation potentials, which we aim to exploit using computer vision techniques. More precisely, we propose a cognitive system for the fully automated recognition of packaging structures for standardized logistics shipments based on single RGB images. Our contribution contains descriptions of a suitable system…

Applying deep learning to object detection provides the capability to accurately detect and classify complex objects in the real world. However, currently, few mobile applications use deep learning because such technology is computation-intensive and energy-consuming. This paper, to the best of our knowledge, presents the first detailed experimental study of a mobile augmented reality (AR) client's energy consumption and the detection latency of executing Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) based object detection, either locally on the smartphone or remotely on an edge server. In order to accu…
Machine learning techniques work best when the data used for training resembles the data used for evaluation. This holds true for learned single-image denoising algorithms, which are applied to real raw camera sensor readings but, due to practical constraints, are often trained on synthetic image data. Though it is understood that generalizing from synthetic to real data requires careful consideration of the noise properties of image sensors, the other aspects of a camera's image processing pipeline (gain, color correction, tone mapping, etc) are often overlooked, despite their significant eff…

Modern natural language processing (NLP) methods employ self-supervised pretraining objectives such as masked language modeling to boost the performance of various application tasks. These pretraining methods are frequently extended with recurrence, adversarial or linguistic property masking, and more recently with contrastive learning objectives. Contrastive self-supervised training objectives enabled recent successes in image representation pretraining by learning to contrast input-input pairs of augmented images as either similar or dissimilar. However, in NLP, automated creation of text in…

Single-vehicle accidents are the most common type of fatal accidents in Sweden, where a car drives off the road and runs into hazardous roadside objects. Proper installation and maintenance of protective objects, such as crash cushions and guard rails, may reduce the chance and severity of such accidents. Moreover, efficient detection and management of hazardous roadside objects also plays an important role in improving road safety. To better understand the state-of-the-art and system requirements, in this pre-study, we investigate the feasibility, implementation, limitations and scaling up of…
