Enhancement algorithms for wireless acoustics sensor networks~(WASNs) are indispensable with the increasing availability and usage of connected devices with microphones. Conventional spatial filtering approaches for enhancement in WASNs approximate quantization noise with an additive Gaussian distribution, which limits performance due to the non-linear nature of quantization noise at lower bitrates. In this work, we propose a postfilter for enhancement based on Bayesian statistics to obtain a multidevice signal estimate, which explicitly models the quantization noise. Our experiments using PSNR, PESQ and MUSHRA scores demonstrate that the proposed postfilter can be used to enhance signal quality in ad-hoc sensor networks.
This paper presents a complete hardware and software pipeline for real-time speech enhancement in noisy and reverberant conditions. The device consists of a microphone array and a camera mounted on eyeglasses, connected to an embedded system that enhances speech and plays back the audio in headphones, with a latency of maximum 120 msec. The proposed approach relies on face detection, tracking and verification to enhance the speech of a target speaker using a beamformer and a postfiltering neural network. Results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach, and opens the door to the exploration…
Diarization of audio recordings from ad-hoc mobile devices using spatial information is considered in this paper. A two-channel synchronous recording is assumed for each mobile device, which is used to compute directional statistics separately at each device in a frame-wise manner. The recordings across the mobile devices are asynchronous, but a coarse synchronization is performed by aligning the signals using acoustic events, or real-time clock. Direction statistics computed for all the devices, are then modeled jointly using a Dirichlet mixture model, and the posterior probability over the m…

This paper tackles post-hoc interpretability for audio processing networks. Our goal is to interpret decisions of a network in terms of high-level audio objects that are also listenable for the end-user. To this end, we propose a novel interpreter design that incorporates non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). In particular, a carefully regularized interpreter module is trained to take hidden layer representations of the targeted network as input and produce time activations of pre-learnt NMF components as intermediate outputs. Our methodology allows us to generate intuitive audio-based inte…

We present a system for localizing sound sources in a room with several ad-hoc microphone arrays. Each circular array performs direction of arrival (DOA) estimation independently using commercial software. The DOAs are fed to a fusion center, concatenated, and used to perform the localization based on two proposed methods, which require only few labeled source locations (anchor points) for training. The first proposed method is based on principal component analysis (PCA) of the observed DOA and does not require any knowledge of anchor points. The array cluster can then perform localization on …
Classifying a weapon based on its muzzle blast is a challenging task that has significant applications in various security and military fields. Most of the existing works rely on ad-hoc deployment of spatially diverse microphone sensors to capture multiple replicas of the same gunshot, which enables accurate detection and identification of the acoustic source. However, carefully controlled setups are difficult to obtain in scenarios such as crime scene forensics, making the aforementioned techniques inapplicable and impractical. We introduce a novel technique that requires zero knowledge about…

Audiovisual synchronisation is the task of determining the time offset between speech audio and a video recording of the articulators. In child speech therapy, audio and ultrasound videos of the tongue are captured using instruments which rely on hardware to synchronise the two modalities at recording time. Hardware synchronisation can fail in practice, and no mechanism exists to synchronise the signals post hoc. To address this problem, we employ a two-stream neural network which exploits the correlation between the two modalities to find the offset. We train our model on recordings from 69 s…
Recent speech and audio coding standards such as 3GPP Enhanced Voice Services match the foreseeable needs and requirements in transmission of speech and audio, when using current transmission infrastructure and applications. Trends in Internet-of-Things technology and development in personal digital assistants (PDAs) however begs us to consider future requirements for speech and audio codecs. The opportunities and challenges are here summarized in three concepts: collaboration, unification and privacy. First, an increasing number of devices will in the future be speech-operated, whereby the ab…
