Parametric quantum circuits play a crucial role in the performance of many variational quantum algorithms. To successfully implement such algorithms, one must design efficient quantum circuits that sufficiently approximate the solution space while maintaining a low parameter count and circuit depth. In this paper, we develop a method to analyze the dimensional expressivity of parametric quantum circuits. Our technique allows for identifying superfluous parameters in the circuit layout and for obtaining a maximally expressive ansatz with a minimum number of parameters. Using a hybrid quantum-classical approach, we show how to efficiently implement the expressivity analysis using quantum hardware, and we provide a proof of principle demonstration of this procedure on IBM's quantum hardware. We also discuss the effect of symmetries and demonstrate how to incorporate or remove symmetries from the parametrized ansatz.

The superiority of variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) such as quantum neural networks (QNNs) and variational quantum eigen-solvers (VQEs) heavily depends on the expressivity of the employed ansatze. Namely, a simple ansatze is insufficient to capture the optimal solution, while an intricate ansatze leads to the hardness of the trainability. Despite its fundamental importance, an effective strategy of measuring the expressivity of VQAs remains largely unknown. Here, we exploit an advanced tool in statistical learning theory, i.e., covering number, to study the expressivity of VQAs. In partic…

Quantum computers hold unprecedented potentials for machine learning applications. Here, we prove that physical quantum circuits are PAC (probably approximately correct) learnable on a quantum computer via empirical risk minimization: to learn a parametric quantum circuit with at most $n^c$ gates and each gate acting on a constant number of qubits, the sample complexity is bounded by $\tilde{O}(n^{c+1})$. In particular, we explicitly construct a family of variational quantum circuits with $O(n^{c+1})$ elementary gates arranged in a fixed pattern, which can represent all physical quantum circui…
Reducing errors is critical to the application of modern quantum computers. In the current Letter, we investigate the quantum error mitigation considering parametric circuits accessible by classical computations in some range of their parameters. We present a method of global randomized error cancellations (GREC) mitigating quantum errors by summing a linear combination of additionally randomized quantum circuits with weights determined by comparison with the referent classically computable data. We illustrate the performance of this method on the example of the $n = 4$ spins anti-ferromagneti…

We review recent advances in the research on quantum parametric phenomena in superconducting circuits with Josephson junctions. We discuss physical processes in parametrically driven tunable cavity and outline theoretical foundations for their description. Amplification and frequency conversion are discussed in detail for degenerate and non-degenerate parametric resonance, including quantum noise squeezing and photon entanglement. Experimental advances in this area played decisive role in successful development of quantum limited parametric amplifiers for superconducting quantum information te…
The data-embedding process is one of the bottlenecks of quantum machine learning, potentially negating any quantum speedups. In light of this, more effective data-encoding strategies are necessary. We propose a photonic-based bosonic data-encoding scheme that embeds classical data points using fewer encoding layers and circumventing the need for nonlinear optical components by mapping the data points into the high-dimensional Fock space. The expressive power of the circuit can be controlled via the number of input photons. Our work shed some light on the unique advantages offers by quantum pho…

In this work, we address the question whether a sufficiently deep quantum neural network can approximate a target function as accurate as possible. We start with simple but typical physical situations that the target functions are physical observables, and then we extend our discussion to situations that the learning targets are not directly physical observables, but can be expressed as physical observables in an enlarged Hilbert space with multiple replicas, such as the Loshimidt echo and the Renyi entropy. The main finding is that an accurate approximation is possible only when the input wav…
This short and opinionated review starts with a concept of quantum signals at microwave frequencies and focuses on the principle of linear parametric amplification. The amplification process arises from the dispersive nonlinearity of Josephson junctions driven with appropriate tones. We discuss two defining characteristics of these amplifiers: the number of modes receiving the signal, idler and pump waves and the number of independent ports through which these waves enter into the circuit.
Fast robust two-qubit gate operation with low susceptibility to crosstalk are the key to scalable quantum information processing. Parametrically driven gate is inherently insensitive to crosstalk while superadiabatic control can speed up the gate without losing accuracy. We propose and experimentally implement superadiabatic two-qubit gates using parametric modulation on superconducting quantum circuits. Our results demonstrate the preservation of adiabaticity at a gate speed close to the quantum limit, in addition to robustness against control instability. We demonstrate a CZ gate with error …
Finding ground states and low-lying excitations of a given Hamiltonian is one of the most important problems in many fields of physics. As a novel approach, quantum computing on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices offers the prospect to efficiently perform such computations and may eventually outperform classical computers. However, current quantum devices still suffer from inherent quantum noise. In this work, we propose an error mitigation scheme suitable for parametric quantum circuits. This scheme is based on projecting a general quantum noise channel onto depolarization errors…
Superconducting circuits and trapped ions are promising architectures for quantum information processing. However, the natural frequencies for controlling these systems -- radio frequency ion control and microwave domain superconducting qubit control -- make direct Hamiltonian interactions between them weak. In this paper we describe a technique for coupling a trapped ion's motion to the fundamental mode of a superconducting circuit, by applying to the circuit a carefully modulated external magnetic flux. In conjunction with a non-linear element (Josephson junction), this gives the circuit an …

We propose a scheme for quantum estimation by means of parametric amplification in circuit Quantum Electrodynamics. The modulation of a SQUID interrupting a superconducting waveguide transforms an initial thermal two-mode squeezed state in such a way that the new state is sensitive to the features of the parametric amplifier. We find the optimal initial parameters which maximize the Quantum Fisher Information. In order to achieve a large number of independent measurements we propose to use an array of non-interacting resonators. We show that the combination of both large QFI and large number o…
We experimentally demonstrate a parametric iSWAP gate in a superconducting circuit based on a tunable coupler for achieving a continuous tunability to eliminate unwanted qubit interactions. We implement the twoqubit iSWAP gate by applying a fast-flux bias modulation pulse on the coupler to turn on parametric exchange interaction between computational qubits. The controllable interaction can provide an extra degree of freedom to verify the optimal condition for constructing the parametric gate. Aiming to fully investigate error sources of the two-qubit gates, we perform quantum process tomograp…

This paper showcases a method of parametric synthesis of quantum circuits for training perceptron neural networks. Synapse weights are found using Grover's algorithm with a modified oracle function. The results of running these parametrically synthesized circuits for training perceptrons of three different topologies are described. The circuits were run on a 100-qubit IBM quantum simulator. The synthesis of quantum circuits is carried out using quantum synthesizer "Naginata", which was developed in the scope of this work, the source code of which is published and further documented on GitHub. …
With the assistance of a single cyclic three-level system, which can be realized by a superconducting flux qubit, we study theoretically the degenerate microwave parametric down-conversion (PDC) in a superconducting transmission line resonator with the fundamental and second harmonic modes involved. By adiabatically eliminating the excited states of the three-level system, we obtain an effective microwave PDC Hamiltonian for the two resonator modes in such a circuit QED system. The corresponding PDC efficiency in our model can be much larger than that in the similar circuit QED system based on…
Discrete time-translation symmetry breaking can be observed in periodically-driven systems oscillating at a fraction of the frequency of the driving force. However, with the exception of the parametric instability in period-doubling, multi-periodic driving does not lead to an instability threshold. In this paper, we point out that quantum vacuum fluctuations can be generically employed to induce period multiplication. In particular, we discuss the period-tripled states in circuit QED and propose a microwave setup. We show that for weak dissipation or strong driving, the system exhibits a non-e…
Multi-qubit parity measurements are essential to quantum error correction. Current realizations of these measurements often rely on ancilla qubits, a method that is sensitive to faulty two-qubit gates and which requires significant experimental overhead. We propose a hardware-efficient multi-qubit parity measurement exploiting the bifurcation dynamics of a parametrically driven nonlinear oscillator. This approach takes advantage of the resonator's parametric oscillation threshold which is a function of the joint parity of dispersively coupled qubits, leading to high-amplitude oscillations for …
We review two algorithmic advances that bring us closer to reliable quantum simulations of model systems in high energy physics and beyond on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. The first method is the dimensional expressivity analysis of quantum circuits, which allows for constructing minimal but maximally expressive quantum circuits. The second method is an efficient mitigation of readout errors on quantum devices. Both methods can lead to significant improvements in quantum simulations, e.g., when variational quantum eigensolvers are used.
We propose an experimentally accessible superconducting quantum circuit, consisting of two coplanar waveguide resonators (CWRs), to enhance the microwave squeezing via parametric down-conversion (PDC). In our scheme, the two CWRs are nonlinearly coupled through a superconducting quantum interference device embedded in one of the CWRs. This is equivalent to replacing the transmission line in a flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) by a CWR, which makes it possible to drive the JPA by a quantized microwave field. Owing to this design, the PDC coefficient can be considerably increased …
