Different flavors of transfer learning have shown tremendous impact in advancing research and applications of machine learning. In this work we study the use of a specific family of transfer learning, where the target domain is mapped to the source domain. Specifically we map Natural Language Understanding (NLU) problems to QuestionAnswering (QA) problems and we show that in low data regimes this approach offers significant improvements compared to other approaches to NLU. Moreover we show that these gains could be increased through sequential transfer learning across NLU problems from different domains. We show that our approach could reduce the amount of required data for the same performance by up to a factor of 10.

In this paper, we study the problem of geometric reasoning in the context of question-answering. We introduce Dynamic Spatial Memory Network (DSMN), a new deep network architecture designed for answering questions that admit latent visual representations. DSMN learns to generate and reason over such representations. Further, we propose two synthetic benchmarks, FloorPlanQA and ShapeIntersection, to evaluate the geometric reasoning capability of QA systems. We implement Groenendijk and Stokhof's partition semantics of questions in a simple question answering algorithm. The algorithm is sound, complete, and based on tableau theorem proving. The algorithm relies on a syntactic characterization of answerhood: Any answer to a question is equivalent to some formula built up only from instances of the question.
