Collective plasma excitations in moiré flat bands display unique properties reflecting strong electron-electron interactions and unusual carrier dynamics in these systems. Unlike the conventional two-dimensional plasmon modes, dispersing as $\sqrt{k}$ at low frequencies and plunging into particle-hole continuum at higher frequencies, the moiré plasmons pierce through the flat-band continuum and acquire a strong over-the-band character. Due to the complex structure of the moiré superlattice unit cell, the over-the-band plasmons feature several distinct branches connected through zone folding in the superlattice Brillouin zone. Using a toy Hubbard model for the correlated insulating order in a flat band, we predict that these high-frequency modes become strongly dipole-active upon the system undergoing charge ordering, with the low-frequency modes gapped out within the correlated insulator gap. Strong dipole moments and sensitivity to charge order make these modes readily accessible by optical measurements, providing a convenient diagnostic of the correlated states.

We show that the insulating states of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene support a series of collective modes corresponding to local particle-hole excitations on triangular lattice sites. Our theory is based on a continuum model of the magic angle flat bands. When the system is insulating at moiré band filling $ν=-3$, our calculations show that the ground state supports seven low-energy modes that lie well below the charge gap throughout the moiré Brillouin zone, one of which couples strongly to THz photons. The low-energy collective modes are faithfully described by a model with a local $SU…
Moiré interlayer exciton in transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayer features a permanent electric dipole that enables the electrostatic control of its flow, and optical dipole that is spatially varying in the moiré landscape. We show the hybridization of moiré interlayer exciton with photons in a planar 2D cavity leads to two types of moiré polaritons that exhibit distinct forms of topological transport phenomena including the spin/valley Hall and polarization Hall effects, which feature remarkable electrical tunability through the control of exciton-cavity detuning by the interlayer bia…

Topological aspects of electron wavefunction play a crucial role in determining the physical properties of materials. Berry curvature and Chern number are used to define the topological structure of electronic bands. While Berry curvature and its effects in materials have been studied, detecting changes in the topological invariant, Chern number, is challenging. In this regard, twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) has emerged as a promising platform to gain electrical control over the Berry curvature hotspots and the valley Chern numbers of its flat bands. In addition, strain induced breakin…
Achieving Bloch oscillations of free carriers under a direct current, a long-sought-after collective many-body behavior, has been challenging due to stringent constraints on the band properties. We argue that the flat bands in moiré graphene fulfill the basic requirements for observing Bloch oscillations, offering an appealing alternative to the stacked quantum wells used in previous work aiming to access this regime. Bloch-oscillating moiré superlattices emit a comb-like spectrum of incommensurate frequencies, a property of interest for converting direct currents into high-frequency currents …
Several moiré systems created by various twisted bilayers have manifested magnetism under flatband conditions leading to enhanced interaction effects. We theoretically study stability of moiré flatband ferromagnetism against collective excitations, with a focus on the effects of Bloch band quantum geometry. The spin magnon spectrum is calculated using different approaches, including Bethe-Salpeter equation, single mode approximation, and an analytical theory. One of our main results is an analytical expression for the spin stiffness in terms of the Coulomb interaction potential, the Berry curv…
We discover chiral phonons at the lowest-energy bands in moiré superlattices. The moiré chiral phonons we uncover are the collective excitations of the stacking domains. Their origin is uniquely attributed to the stacking configurations whose interlayer binding energy breaks the $C_{2z}$ symmetry on the moiré length scale. Within elastic theory, we use a general symmetry analysis to provide a complete classification of van der Waals heterostructures in respect to hosting moiré chiral phonons and show the calculation for twisted MoS$_2$ as an example. We present a low-energy effective model to …
The elastic collective modes of a moiré superlattice arise not from vibrations of a rigid crystal but from the relative displacement between the constituent layers. Despite their similarity to acoustic phonons, these modes, called phasons, are not protected by any conservation law. Here, we show that disorder in the relative orientation between the layers and thermal fluctuations associated with their sliding motion degrade the propagation of sound in the moiré superlattice. Specifically, the phason modes become overdamped at low energies and acquire a finite gap, which displays a universal de…
We study the in-plane acoustic phonons in twisted bilayer graphenes using the effective continuum approach. We calculate the phonon modes by solving the continuum equation of motion for infinitesimal vibration around the static relaxed state with triangular domain structure. We find that the moiré interlayer potential only affects the in-plane asymmetric modes, where the original linear dispersion is broken down into miniphonon bands separated by gaps, while the in-plane symmetric modes with their linear dispersion are hardly affected. The phonon wave functions of asymmetric modes are regarded…
Recent experimental progresses have demonstrated the great potential of electronic and excitonic moiré superlattices in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for quantum many-body simulations and quantum optics applications. Here we reveal that the moiré potential landscapes in the TMDs heterostructures have an electrostatic origin from the spontaneous charge transfer across the heterointerfaces dependent on the atomic registry. This allows engineering tunable multi-chromatic superlattices through the interference of moiré potentials from independently configurable heterointerfaces in multil…
The second-order nonlinear Hall effect illuminates a frequency-doubling transverse current emerging in quantum materials with broken inversion symmetry even when time-reversal symmetry is preserved. This nonlinear response originates from both the Berry curvature dipole and the chiral Bloch electron skew scatterings, reflecting various information of the lattice symmetries, band dispersions, and topology of the electron wavefunctions. Even though many efforts have been put in detecting the nonlinear Hall effect in diverse condensed matter systems, effective manipulation of the two principal me…
Van der Waals heterostructures employing graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) crystals have emerged as a promising platform for plasmonics thanks to the tunability of their collective modes with carrier density and record values for plasmonics figures of merit. In this Article we investigate theoretically the role of moiré-pattern superlattices in nearly aligned graphene on hBN by using continuum-model Hamiltonians derived from ab initio calculations. We calculate the system's energy loss function for a variety of chemical potential values that are accessible in gated devices. Our calcul…

Controlling matter-light interactions with cavities is of fundamental importance in modern science and technology. It is exemplified in the strong-coupling regime, where matter-light hybrid modes form, with properties controllable via the photon component on the optical-wavelength scale. In contrast, matter excitations on the nanometer scale are harder to access. In two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, a tunable moiré lattice potential for electronic excitations may form, enabling correlated electron gases in lattice potentials. Excitons confined in moiré lattices have also been rep…
Starting from a continuum-model description, we develop a microscopic weak-coupling theory for superconductivity in twisted double-bilayer graphene. We study both electron-phonon and entirely electronic pairing mechanisms. In each case, the leading superconducting instability transforms under the trivial representation, $A$, of the point group $C_3$ of the system, while the subleading pairing phases belong to the $E$ channel. We explicitly compute the momentum dependence of the associated order parameters and find that the leading state has no nodal points for electron-phonon pairing but exhib…
Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator with large gap is highly desirable for potential spintronics application. Here we realize electrically tunable QSH insulator with large gap in van der Waals heterobilayer of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) and hexagonal BAs. When the type II band alignment gets inverted in an electric field, the hybridization by interlayer hopping between the spin-valley locked valence band edges in TMD and the BAs conduction band edges leads to a stacking-configuration dependent topological band inversion. In the non-interacting limit, the double spin degenera…
In a closely packed ensemble of quantum emitters, cooperative effects are typically suppressed due to the dephasing induced by the dipole-dipole interactions. Here, we show that by adding sufficiently strong collective dephasing cooperative effects can be restored. In particular, we show that the dipole force on a closely packed ensemble of strongly driven two-level quantum emitters, which collectively dephase, is enhanced in comparison to the dipole force on an independent non-interacting ensemble. Our results are relevant to solid state systems with embedded quantum emitters such as colour c…
The spin coherence phenomena and the possibility of their observation in nanomagnetic insulators attract more and more attention in the last several years. Recently it has been shown that in these systems in large transverse magnetic field there can be a fairly narrow "coherence window" for phonon and nuclear spin-mediated decoherence. What kind of spin dynamics can then be expected in this window in a crystal of magnetic nanomolecules coupled to phonons, to nuclear spin bath and it to each other via dipole-dipole interactions? Studying multispin correlations, we determine the region of parame…
Lattice dynamics play a crucial role in the physics of Moiré systems. In twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), it was shown that, in addition to the graphene phonons, there is another set of gapless excitations termed Moiré Phonons [Phys. Rev. B, 075416, 2019] reflecting the lattice dynamics at the Moire superlattice level. These modes were later suggested to be phasons due to the incommensurate stacking of the two graphene layers [Phys. Rev. B, 155426, 2019]. In this work, we elucidate the equivalence of these two seemingly distinct perspectives by identifying an underlying symmetry, which we dub m…
We describe the structure of the time-harmonic electromagnetic field of a vertical Hertzian electric dipole source radiating over an infinite, translation invariant two-dimensional electron system. Our model for the electron flow takes into account the effects of shear and Hall viscosities as well as an external static magnetic field perpendicular to the sheet. We identify two wave modes, namely, a surface plasmon and a diffusive mode. In the presence of an external static magnetic field, the diffusive mode combines the features of both the conventional and Hall diffusion and may exhibit a neg…
We investigate a cavity quantum electrodynamic effect, where the alignment of two-dimensional freely rotating optical dipoles is driven by their collective coupling to the cavity field. By exploiting the formal equivalence of a set of rotating dipoles with a polymer we calculate the partition function of the coupled light-matter system and demonstrate it exhibits a second order phase transition between a bunched state of isotropic orientations and a stretched one with all the dipoles aligned. Such a transition manifests itself as an intensity-dependent shift of the polariton mode resonance. Ou…
