The current article is an interdisciplinary attempt to decipher automatic program repair processes. The review is done by the manner typical to human science known as diffraction. We attempt to spot a gap in the literature of self-healing and self-repair operations and further investigate the approaches that would enable us to tackle the problems we face. As a conclusion, we suggest a shift in the current approach to automatic program repair operations in order to attain our goals. The emphasis of this review is to achieve full automation. Several obstacles are shortly mentioned in the current essay but the main shortage that is covered is the overfitting obstacle, and this particular problem is investigated in the stream that is related to full automation of the repair process.
We introduce Learn2fix, the first human-in-the-loop, semi-automatic repair technique when no bug oracle--except for the user who is reporting the bug--is available. Our approach negotiates with the user the condition under which the bug is observed. Only when a budget of queries to the user is exhausted, it attempts to repair the bug. A query can be thought of as the following question: "When executing this alternative test input, the program produces the following output; is the bug observed"? Through systematic queries, Learn2fix trains an automatic bug oracle that becomes increasingly more …
Repairnator is a bot. It constantly monitors software bugs discovered during continuous integration of open-source software and tries to fix them automatically. If it succeeds to synthesize a valid patch, Repairnator proposes the patch to the human developers, disguised under a fake human identity. To date, Repairnator has been able to produce 5 patches that were accepted by the human developers and permanently merged in the code base. This is a milestone for human-competitiveness in software engineering research on automatic program repair.
At ICSE'2013, there was the first session ever dedicated to automatic program repair. In this session, Kim et al. presented PAR, a novel template-based approach for fixing Java bugs. We strongly disagree with key points of this paper. Our critical review has two goals. First, we aim at explaining why we disagree with Kim and colleagues and why the reasons behind this disagreement are important for research on automatic software repair in general. Second, we aim at contributing to the field with a clarification of the essential ideas behind automatic software repair. In particular we discuss th…
Context: During last years, many automatic software repair approaches have been presented by the software engineering research community. According to the corresponding papers, these approaches are able to repair real defects from open source projects. Problematic: Some previous publications in the automatic repair field do not provide the implementation of theirs approaches. Consequently, it is not possible for the research community to re-execute the original evaluation, to set up new evaluations (for example, to evaluate the performance against new defects) or to compare approaches against …
Defects4J is a large, peer-reviewed, structured dataset of real-world Java bugs. Each bug in Defects4J is provided with a test suite and at least one failing test case that triggers the bug. In this paper, we report on an experiment to explore the effectiveness of automatic repair on Defects4J. The result of our experiment shows that 47 bugs of the Defects4J dataset can be automatically repaired by state-of- the-art repair. This sets a baseline for future research on automatic repair for Java. We have manually analyzed 84 different patches to assess their real correctness. In total, 9 real Jav…

Deep learning models have made significant progress in automatic program repair. However, the black-box nature of these methods has restricted their practical applications. To address this challenge, this paper presents an interpretable approach for program repair based on sequence-to-sequence models with causal inference and our method is called CPR, short for causal program repair. Our CPR can generate explanations in the process of decision making, which consists of groups of causally related input-output tokens. Firstly, our method infers these relations by querying the model with inputs d…
In this presentation, we introduce our constraint-based repair approach, called SymDefFix. SymDefFix is based on ExtractFix [3] and replaces the dynamic analysis steps of ExtractFix to detect the error and find the potential fix locations in an input program with symbolic execution. We first briefly motivate and introduce our modifications of ExtractFix, and then demonstrate it with an example.
Astor is a program repair library which has different modes. In this paper, we present the Cardumen mode of Astor, a repair approach based mined templates that has an ultra-large search space. We evaluate the capacity of Cardumen to discover test-suite adequate patches (aka plausible patches) over the 356 real bugs from Defects4J. Cardumen finds 8935 patches over 77 bugs of Defects4J. This is the largest number of automatically synthesized patches ever reported, all patches being available in an open-science repository. Moreover, Cardumen identifies 8 unique patches, that are patches for Defec…
Research on automatic software repair is concerned with the development of systems that automatically detect and repair bugs. One well-known class of bugs is the infinite loop. Every computer programmer or user has, at least once, experienced this type of bug. We state the problem of repairing infinite loops in the context of test-suite based software repair: given a test suite with at least one failing test, generate a patch that makes all test cases pass. Consequently, repairing infinites loop means having at least one test case that hangs by triggering the infinite loop. Our system to autom…
Automatic program repair papers tend to repeatedly use the same benchmarks. This poses a threat to the external validity of the findings of the program repair research community. In this paper, we perform an empirical study of automatic repair on a benchmark of bugs called QuixBugs, which has been little studied. In this paper, 1) We report on the characteristics of QuixBugs; 2) We study the effectiveness of 10 program repair tools on it; 3) We apply three patch correctness assessment techniques to comprehensively study the presence of overfitting patches in QuixBugs. Our key results are: 1) 1…
This article presents a survey on automatic software repair. Automatic software repair consists of automatically finding a solution to software bugs without human intervention. This article considers all kinds of repairs. First, it discusses behavioral repair where test suites, contracts, models, and crashing inputs are taken as oracle. Second, it discusses state repair, also known as runtime repair or runtime recovery, with techniques such as checkpoint and restart, reconfiguration, and invariant restoration. The uniqueness of this article is that it spans the research communities that contri…
Among the many different kinds of program repair techniques, one widely studied family of techniques is called test suite based repair. However, test suites are in essence input-output specifications and are thus typically inadequate for completely specifying the expected behavior of the program under repair. Consequently, the patches generated by test suite based repair techniques can just overfit to the used test suite, and fail to generalize to other tests. We deeply analyze the overfitting problem in program repair and give a classification of this problem. This classification will help th…
We present Nopol, an approach for automatically repairing buggy if conditions and missing preconditions. As input, it takes a program and a test suite which contains passing test cases modeling the expected behavior of the program and at least one failing test case embodying the bug to be repaired. It consists of collecting data from multiple instrumented test suite executions, transforming this data into a Satisfiability Modulo Theory (SMT) problem, and translating the SMT result -- if there exists one -- into a source code patch. Nopol repairs object oriented code and allows the patches to c…
PRF is a Java-based framework that allows researchers to build prototypes of test-based generate-and-validate automatic program repair techniques for JVM languages by simply extending it with their patch generation plugins. The framework also provides other useful components for constructing automatic program repair tools, e.g., a fault localization component that provides spectrum-based fault localization information at different levels of granularity, a configurable and safe patch validation component that is 11+X faster than vanilla testing, and a customizable post-processing component to g…
Users around the world rely on software-intensive systems in their day-to-day activities. These systems regularly contain bugs and security vulnerabilities. To facilitate bug fixing, data-driven models of automatic program repair use pairs of buggy and fixed code to learn transformations that fix errors in code. However, automatic repair of security vulnerabilities remains under-explored. In this work, we propose ways to improve code representations for vulnerability repair from three perspectives: input data type, data-driven models, and downstream tasks. The expected results of this work are…
Null pointer exceptions, also known as null dereferences are the number one exceptions in the field. In this paper, we propose 9 alternative execution semantics when a null pointer exception is about to happen. We implement those alternative execution strategies using code transformation in a tool called NPEfix. We evaluate our prototype implementation on 11 field null dereference bugs and 519 seeded failures and show that NPEfix is able to repair at runtime 10/11 and 318/519 failures.
Defects4J is a large, peer-reviewed, structured dataset of real-world Java bugs. Each bug in Defects4J comes with a test suite and at least one failing test case that triggers the bug. In this paper, we report on an experiment to explore the effectiveness of automatic test-suite based repair on Defects4J. The result of our experiment shows that the considered state-of-the-art repair methods can generate patches for 47 out of 224 bugs. However, those patches are only test-suite adequate, which means that they pass the test suite and may potentially be incorrect beyond the test-suite satisfactio…
OpenAI's Codex, a GPT-3 like model trained on a large code corpus, has made headlines in and outside of academia. Given a short user-provided description, it is capable of synthesizing code snippets that are syntactically and semantically valid in most cases. In this work, we want to investigate whether Codex is able to localize and fix bugs, a task of central interest in the field of automated program repair. Our initial evaluation uses the multi-language QuixBugs benchmark (40 bugs in both Python and Java). We find that, despite not being trained for APR, Codex is surprisingly effective, and…
Docker is a popular tool for developers and organizations to package, deploy, and run applications in a lightweight, portable container. One key component of Docker is the Dockerfile, a simple text file that specifies the steps needed to build a Docker image. While Dockerfiles are easy to create and use, creating an optimal image is complex in particular since it is easy to not follow the best practices, when it happens we call it Docker smell. To improve the quality of Dockerfiles, previous works have focused on detecting Docker smells, but they do not offer suggestions or repair the smells. …
This paper presents TransRepair, a fully automatic approach for testing and repairing the consistency of machine translation systems. TransRepair combines mutation with metamorphic testing to detect inconsistency bugs (without access to human oracles). It then adopts probability-reference or cross-reference to post-process the translations, in a grey-box or black-box manner, to repair the inconsistencies. Our evaluation on two state-of-the-art translators, Google Translate and Transformer, indicates that TransRepair has a high precision (99%) on generating input pairs with consistent translati…
Static analysis tools, or linters, detect violation of source code conventions to maintain project readability. Those tools automatically fix specific violations while developers edit the source code. However, existing tools are designed for the general conventions of programming languages. These tools do not check the project/API-specific conventions. We propose a novel static analysis tool DevReplay that generates code change patterns by mining the code change history, and we recommend changes using the matched patterns. Using DevReplay, developers can automatically detect and fix project/AP…

Automatic program repair (APR) is crucial to improve software reliability. Recently, neural machine translation (NMT) techniques have been used to fix software bugs automatically. While promising, these approaches have two major limitations. Their search space often does not contain the correct fix, and their search strategy ignores software knowledge such as strict code syntax. Due to these limitations, existing NMT-based techniques underperform the best template-based approaches. We propose CURE, a new NMT-based APR technique with three major novelties. First, CURE pre-trains a programming l…
Automated program repair is already deployed in industry, but concerns remain about repair quality. Recent research has shown that one of the main reasons repair tools produce incorrect (but seemingly correct) patches is imperfect fault localization (FL). This paper demonstrates that combining information from natural-language bug reports and test executions when localizing faults can have a significant positive impact on repair quality. For example, existing repair tools with such FL are able to correctly repair 7 defects in the Defects4J benchmark that no prior tools have repaired correctly.…
Debugging imperative network programs is a challenging task for developers because understanding various network modules and complicated data structures is typically time-consuming. To address the challenge, this paper presents an automated technique for repairing network programs from unit tests. Specifically, given as input a faulty network program and a set of unit tests, our approach localizes the fault through symbolic reasoning, and synthesizes a patch such that the repaired program can pass all unit tests. It applies domain-specific abstraction to simplify network data structures and ut…
Automated program repair is an emerging technology that seeks to automatically rectify bugs and vulnerabilities using learning, search, and semantic analysis. Trust in automatically generated patches is necessary for achieving greater adoption of program repair. Towards this goal, we survey more than 100 software practitioners to understand the artifacts and setups needed to enhance trust in automatically generated patches. Based on the feedback from the survey on developer preferences, we quantitatively evaluate existing test-suite based program repair tools. We find that they cannot produce …

The advance in machine learning (ML)-driven natural language process (NLP) points a promising direction for automatic bug fixing for software programs, as fixing a buggy program can be transformed to a translation task. While software programs contain much richer information than one-dimensional natural language documents, pioneering work on using ML-driven NLP techniques for automatic program repair only considered a limited set of such information. We hypothesize that more comprehensive information of software programs, if appropriately utilized, can improve the effectiveness of ML-driven NL…
Context: Learning-based automatic program repair techniques are showing promise to provide quality fix suggestions for detected bugs in the source code of the software. These tools mostly exploit historical data of buggy and fixed code changes and are heavily dependent on bug localizers while applying to a new piece of code. With the increasing popularity of code review, dependency on bug localizers can be reduced. Besides, the code review-based bug localization is more trustworthy since reviewers' expertise and experience are reflected in these suggestions. Objective: The natural language ins…
In this paper, we do automatic correctness assessment for patches generated by program repair systems. We consider the human-written patch as ground truth oracle and randomly generate tests based on it, a technique proposed by Shamshiri et al., called Random testing with Ground Truth (RGT) in this paper. We build a curated dataset of 638 patches for Defects4J generated by 14 state-of-the-art repair systems, we evaluate automated patch assessment on this dataset. The results of this study are novel and significant: First, we improve the state of the art performance of automatic patch assessment…

In the past decade, research on test-suite-based automatic program repair has grown significantly. Each year, new approaches and implementations are featured in major software engineering venues. However, most of those approaches are evaluated on a single benchmark of bugs, which are also rarely reproduced by other researchers. In this paper, we present a large-scale experiment using 11 Java test-suite-based repair tools and 5 benchmarks of bugs. Our goal is to have a better understanding of the current state of automatic program repair tools on a large diversity of benchmarks. Our investigati…
Benchmarks of bugs are essential to empirically evaluate automatic program repair tools. In this paper, we present Bears, a project for collecting and storing bugs into an extensible bug benchmark for automatic repair studies in Java. The collection of bugs relies on commit building state from Continuous Integration (CI) to find potential pairs of buggy and patched program versions from open-source projects hosted on GitHub. Each pair of program versions passes through a pipeline where an attempt of reproducing a bug and its patch is performed. The core step of the reproduction pipeline is the…
We propose NOPOL, an approach to automatic repair of buggy conditional statements (i.e., if-then-else statements). This approach takes a buggy program as well as a test suite as input and generates a patch with a conditional expression as output. The test suite is required to contain passing test cases to model the expected behavior of the program and at least one failing test case that reveals the bug to be repaired. The process of NOPOL consists of three major phases. First, NOPOL employs angelic fix localization to identify expected values of a condition during the test execution. Second, r…
Due to the difficulty of repairing defect, many research efforts have been devoted into automatic defect repair. Given a buggy program that fails some test cases, a typical automatic repair technique tries to modify the program to make all tests pass. However, since the test suites in real world projects are usually insufficient, aiming at passing the test suites often leads to incorrect patches. In this paper we aim to produce precise patches, that is, any patch we produce has a relatively high probability to be correct. More concretely, we focus on condition synthesis, which was shown to be …
Benchmarks play an important role in evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of solutions to automate several phases of the software development lifecycle. Moreover, if well designed, they also serve us well as an important artifact to compare different approaches amongst themselves. BugSwarm is a benchmark that has been recently published, which contains 3,091 pairs of failing and passing continuous integration builds. According to the authors, the benchmark has been designed with the automatic program repair and fault localization communities in mind. Given that a benchmark targeting the…
To support software developers in finding and fixing software bugs, several automated program repair techniques have been introduced. Given a test suite, standard methods usually either synthesize a repair, or navigate a search space of software edits to find test-suite passing variants. Recent program repair methods are based on deep learning approaches. One of these novel methods, which is not primarily intended for automated program repair, but is still suitable for it, is ChatGPT. The bug fixing performance of ChatGPT, however, is so far unclear. Therefore, in this paper we evaluate ChatGP…
Automatic Program Repair (APR) techniques can promisingly help reducing the cost of debugging. Many relevant APR techniques follow the generate-and-validate approach, that is, the faulty program is iteratively modified with different change operators and then validated with a test suite until a plausible patch is generated. In particular, Kali is a generate-and-validate technique developed to investigate the possibility of generating plausible patches by only removing code. Former studies show that indeed Kali successfully addressed several faults. This paper addresses the case of code-removal…
Automated program repair is an emerging technology which consists of a suite of techniques to automatically fix bugs or vulnerabilities in programs. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in program repair. We first study the different suite of techniques used including search based repair, constraint based repair and learning based repair. We then discuss one of the main challenges in program repair namely patch overfitting, by distilling a class of techniques which can alleviate patch overfitting. We then discuss classes of program repair tools, applications…
Program repair research has made tremendous progress over the last few years, and software development bots are now being invented to help developers gain productivity. In this paper, we investigate the concept of a " program repair bot " and present Repairnator. The Repairnator bot is an autonomous agent that constantly monitors test failures, reproduces bugs, and runs program repair tools against each reproduced bug. If a patch is found, Repairnator bot reports it to the developers. At the time of writing, Repairnator uses three different program repair systems and has been operating since F…
Automated program repair techniques, which target to generating correct patches for real world defects automatically, have gained a lot of attention in the last decade. Many different techniques and tools have been proposed and developed. However, even the most sophisticated program repair techniques can only repair a small portion of defects while producing a lot of incorrect patches. A possible reason for this low performance is that the test suites of real world programs are usually too weak to guarantee the behavior of the program. To understand to what extent defects can be fixed with wea…
Automatic program repair (APR) has recently gained attention because it proposes to fix software defects with no human intervention. To automatically fix defects, most APR tools use the developer-written tests to (a) localize the defect, and (b) generate and validate the automatically produced candidate patches based on the constraints imposed by the tests. While APR tools can produce patches that appear to fix the defect for 11-19% of the defects in real-world software, most of the patches produced are not correct or acceptable to developers because they overfit to the tests used during the r…
We present TarTar, an automatic repair analysis tool that, given a timed diagnostic trace (TDT) obtained during the model checking of a timed automaton model, suggests possible syntactic repairs of the analyzed model. The suggested repairs include modified values for clock bounds in location invariants and transition guards, adding or removing clock resets, etc. The proposed repairs are guaranteed to eliminate executability of the given TDT, while preserving the overall functional behavior of the system. We give insights into the design and architecture of TarTar, and show that it can successf…
