We introduce a two-parameter approximate counter-diabatic term into the Hamiltonian of the transverse-field Ising model for quantum annealing to accelerate convergence to the solution, generalizing an existing single-parameter approach. The protocol is equivalent to unconventional diabatic control of the longitudinal and transverse fields in the transverse-field Ising model and thus makes it more feasible for experimental realization than an introduction of new terms such as non-stoquastic catalysts toward the same goal of performance enhancement. We test the idea for the $p$-spin model with $p=3$, which has a first-order quantum phase transition, and show that our two-parameter approach leads to significantly larger ground-state fidelity and lower residual energy than those by traditional quantum annealing as well as by the single-parameter method. We also find a scaling advantage in terms of the time to solution as a function of the system size in a certain range of parameters as compared to the traditional methods.
In this paper, we present a hybrid quantum/classical algorithm to solve an NP-hard combinatorial problem called the multiple target data association (MTDA) and tracking problem. We use diabatic quantum annealing (DQA) to enumerate the low energy, or high probability, feasible assignments, and we use a classical computer to find the Bayesian expected mean track estimate by summing over these assignments. We demonstrate our hybrid quantum/classical approach on a simple example. This may be the first demonstration of a Bayesian hybrid quantum-classical multiple target tracking filter. We contrast…
A shorter processing time is desirable for quantum computation to minimize the effects of noise. We propose a simple procedure to variationally determine a set of parameters in the transverse-field Ising model for quantum annealing appended with a field along the $y$ axis. The method consists of greedy optimization of the signs of coefficients of the $y$-field term based on the outputs of short annealing processes. We test the idea in the ferromagnetic system with all-to-all couplings and spin-glass problems, and find that the method outperforms the traditional form of quantum annealing and si…
Counter-diabatic driving protocols were proposed as a means to do fast changes in the Hamiltonian without exciting transitions. Such driving in principle allows one to realize arbitrarily fast annealing protocols or implement fast dissipationless driving, circumventing standard adiabatic limitations requiring infinitesimally slow rates. These ideas were tested and used both experimentally and theoretically in small systems, but in larger chaotic systems it is known that exact counter-diabatic protocols do not exist. In this work we develop a simple variational approach allowing one to find bes…
Diabatic quantum annealing (DQA) is an alternative algorithm to adiabatic quantum annealing (AQA) that can be used to circumvent the exponential slowdown caused by small minima in the annealing energy spectrum. We present the locally suppressed transverse-field (LSTF) protocol, a heuristic method for making stoquastic optimization problems compatible with DQA. We show that, provided an optimization problem intrinsically has magnetic frustration due to inhomogeneous local fields, a target qubit in the problem can always be manipulated to create a double minimum in the energy gap between the gro…
The strategy of shortcuts to adiabaticity enables us to realize adiabatic dynamics in finite time. In the counter-diabatic driving approach, an auxiliary Hamiltonian which is called the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian is appended to an original Hamiltonian to cancel out diabatic transitions. The counter-diabatic Hamiltonian is constructed by using the eigenstates of the original Hamiltonian. Therefore, it is in general difficult to construct the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian for quantum many-body systems. Even if the counter-diabatic Hamiltonian for quantum many-body systems is obtained, it is gen…

We discuss quantum annealing of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model on a D-Wave device, encoded on $L \times L$ lattices with $L \le 32$. Analyzing the residual energy and deviation from maximal magnetization in the final classical state, we find an optimal $L$ dependent annealing rate $v$ for which the two quantities are minimized. The results are well described by a phenomenological model with two powers of $v$ and $L$-dependent prefactors to describe the competing effects of reduced quantum fluctuations (for which we see evidence of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism) and increasing no…
Quantum refrigerators pump heat from a cold to a hot reservoir. In the few-particle regime, counter-diabatic (CD) driving of, originally adiabatic, work-exchange strokes is a promising candidate to overcome the bottleneck of vanishing cooling power. Here, we present a finite-time many-body quantum refrigerator that yields finite cooling power at high coefficient of performance, that considerably outperforms its non-adiabatic counterpart. We employ multi-spin CD driving and numerically investigate the scaling behavior of the refrigeration performance with system size. We further prove that opti…
We propose a simple construction of shortcuts to adiabaticity tracking instantaneous stationary states in classical spin systems without knowing tracked stationary states. In our construction, control fields of counter-diabatic driving are constituted by state-dependent magnetic fields, which can be easily determined with an aid of numerical calculations. Easiness of our construction is a remarkable feature since it is usually a hard task to determine explicit form of required counter-diabatic terms in many-body systems. We also argue that our method can be applied to solve combinatorial optim…
We assess the prospects for algorithms within the general framework of quantum annealing (QA) to achieve a quantum speedup relative to classical state of the art methods in combinatorial optimization and related sampling tasks. We argue for continued exploration and interest in the QA framework on the basis that improved coherence times and control capabilities will enable the near-term exploration of several heuristic quantum optimization algorithms that have been introduced in the literature. These continuous-time Hamiltonian computation algorithms rely on control protocols that are more adv…
We study the application of a counter-diabatic driving (CD) technique to enhance the thermodynamic efficiency and power of a quantum Otto refrigerator based on a superconducting qubit coupled to two resonant circuits. Although the CD technique is originally designed to counteract non-adiabatic coherent excitations in isolated systems, we find that it also works effectively in the open system dynamics, improving the coherence-induced losses of efficiency and power. We compare the CD dynamics with its classical counterpart, and find a deviation that arises because the CD is designed to follow th…
The preparation of ground states of spin systems is a fundamental operation in quantum computing and serves as the basis of adiabatic quantum computing. This form of quantum computation is subject to the adiabatic theorem which in turn poses a fundamental speed limit. We show that by employing diabatic transitions via counter diabatic driving a less strict requirement on adiabaticity applies. We demonstrate a scaling advantage from local and multi-spin counter diabatic driving in the ground-state fidelity compared to their adiabatic counterpart, for different Ising spin models.
Shortcuts to adiabaticity (STAs) have been used to make rapid changes to a system while eliminating or minimizing excitations in the system's state. In quantum systems, these shortcuts allow us to minimize inefficiencies and heating in experiments and quantum computing protocols, but the theory of STAs can also be generalized to classical systems. We focus on one such STA, approximate counter-diabatic (ACD) driving, and numerically compare its performance in two classical systems: a quartic anharmonic oscillator and the $β$ Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) lattice. In particular, we modify an e…
Counter-diabatic driving (CD) is a technique in quantum control theory designed to counteract nonadiabatic excitations and guide the system to follow its instantaneous energy eigenstates, and hence has applications in state preparation, quantum annealing, and quantum thermodynamics. However, in many practical situations, the effect of the environment cannot be neglected, and the performance of the CD is expected to degrade. To arrive at general bounds on the resulting error of CD in this situation we consider a driven spin-boson model as a prototypical setup. The inequalities we obtain, in ter…
Current generation quantum annealers have already proven to be successful problem-solvers. Yet, quantum annealing is still very much in its infancy, with suboptimal applicability. For instance, to date it is still an open question which annealing protocol causes the fewest diabatic excitations for a given eigenspectrum, and even whether there is a universally optimal strategy. Therefore, in this paper, we report analytical and numerical studies of the diabatic excitations arising from nonlinear protocols applied to the transverse field Ising chain, the exactly solvable model that serves as a q…
Quantum annealing in a real device is necessarily susceptible to errors due to diabatic transitions and thermal noise. Nested quantum annealing correction is a method to suppress errors by using an all-to-all penalty coupling among a set of physical qubits representing a logical qubit. We show analytically that nested quantum annealing correction can suppress errors effectively in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Ising models with infinite-range interactions. Our analysis reveals that the nesting structure can significantly weaken or even remove first-order phase transitions, in which the e…
We formulate and analyze a double-slit proposal for quantum annealing, which involves observing the probability of finding a two-level system (TLS) undergoing evolution from a transverse to a longitudinal field in the ground state at the final time $t_f$. We demonstrate that for annealing schedules involving two consecutive diabatic transitions, an interference effect is generated akin to a double-slit experiment. The observation of oscillations in the ground state probability as a function of $t_f$ (before the adiabatic limit sets in) then constitutes a sensitive test of coherence between ene…
We provide and analyze examples that counter the widely made claim that tunneling is needed for a quantum speedup in optimization problems. The examples belong to the class of perturbed Hamming-weight optimization problems. In one case, featuring a plateau in the cost function in Hamming weight space, we find that the adiabatic dynamics that make tunneling possible, while superior to simulated annealing, result in a slowdown compared to a diabatic cascade of avoided level-crossings. This, in turn, inspires a classical spin vector dynamics algorithm that is at least as efficient for the plateau…
The annealing schedule is optimized for a parameter in the Lechner-Hauke-Zoller (LHZ) scheme for quantum annealing designed for the all-to-all-interacting Ising model representing generic combinatorial optimization problems. We adapt the variational approach proposed by Matsuura et al. (arXiv:2003.09913) to the annealing schedule of a term representing a constraint for variables intrinsic to the LHZ scheme with the annealing schedule of other terms kept intact. Numerical results for a simple ferromagnetic model and the spin-glass problem show that nonmonotonic annealing schedules optimize the …
Shortcut to adiabaticity in various quantum systems has attracted much attention with the wide applications in quantum information processing and quantum control. In this paper, we concentrate on stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage in quantum three-level systems. To implement counter-diabatic driving but without additional coupling, we first reduce the quantum three-level systems to effective two-level problems at large intermediate-level detuning, or on resonance, apply counter-diabatic driving along with the unitary transformation, and eventually modify the pump and Stokes pulses …
We propose a quantum speedup method for adiabatic generation of cat states in bosonic Josephson junctions via shortcuts to adiabaticity. We apply approximated counter-diabatic driving to a bosonic Josephson junction using the Holstein-Primakoff transformation. In order to avoid the problem of divergence in counter-diabatic driving, we take finite-size corrections into account. The resulting counter-diabatic driving is well-defined over whole processes. Schedules of the counter-diabatic driving consist of three steps; the counter-diabatic driving in the disordered phase, smoothly and slowly app…
We investigate Landau-Zener processes modeled by a two-level quantum system, with its finite bias energy varied in time and in the presence of a single broadened cavity mode at zero temperature. By applying the hierarchy equation method to the Landau-Zener problem, we computationally study the survival fidelity of adiabatic states without Born, Markov, rotating-wave or other perturbative approximations. With this treatment it also becomes possible to investigate cases with very strong system-bath coupling. Different from a previous study of infinite-time Landau-Zener processes, the fidelity of…
The evolution of a system induced by counter-diabatic driving mimics the adiabatic dynamics without the requirement of slow driving. Engineering it involves diagonalizing the instantaneous Hamiltonian of the system and results in the need of auxiliary non-local interactions for matter-waves. Here experimentally realizable driving protocols are found for a large class of single-particle, many-body, and non-linear systems without demanding the spectral properties as an input. The method is applied to the fast decompression of Bose-Einstein condensates in different trapping potentials.
We present a coherent counter-diabatic quantum protocol to prepare ground states in the lattice gauge mapping of all-to-all Ising models (LHZ) with considerably enhanced final ground state fidelity compared to a quantum annealing protocol. We make use of a variational method to find approximate counter-diabatic Hamiltonians that has recently been introduced by Sels and Polkovnikov [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 114, 3909 (2017)]. The resulting additional terms in our protocol are time-dependent local on-site y-magnetic fields. These additional Hamiltonian terms do not increase the minimal energy gap,…
Suppressing unwanted transitions out of the instantaneous ground state is a major challenge in unitary adiabatic quantum computation. A recent approach consists in building counterdiabatic potentials approximated using variational strategies. In this contribution, we extend this variational approach to Lindbladian dynamics, having as a goal the suppression of diabatic transitions between pairs of Jordan blocks in quantum annealing. We show that, surprisingly, unitary counterdiabatic ansätze are successful for dissipative dynamics as well, allowing for easier experimental implementations compar…
Tunneling is often claimed to be the key mechanism underlying possible speedups in quantum optimization via quantum annealing (QA), especially for problems featuring a cost function with tall and thin barriers. We present and analyze several counterexamples from the class of perturbed Hamming-weight optimization problems with qubit permutation symmetry. We first show that, for these problems, the adiabatic dynamics that make tunneling possible should be understood not in terms of the cost function but rather the semi-classical potential arising from the spin-coherent path integral formalism. W…

We report studies of state-to-state vibrational energy transfer in an isolated polyatomic molecule driven by combined stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) and counter-diabatic fields (CDF), using as vehicles selective population of one of a pair of near degenerate states in SCCl$_2$ and enhancing the yield of HNC in the HCN/HNC isomerization reaction. The efficiency of the population transfer within a subset of states embedded in a dense manifold of states is examined for the cases that the transition dipole moments between the initial and target states are much smaller than and compara…
Adiabatic evolution is a powerful technique in quantum information and computation. However, its performance is limited by the adiabatic theorem of quantum mechanics. In this scenario, shortcuts to adiabaticity, such as provided by the superadiabatic theory, constitute a valuable tool to speed up the adiabatic quantum behavior. In this dissertation we introduce two different models to perform universal superadiabatic quantum computing, which are based on the use of shortcuts to adiabaticity by counter-diabatic Hamiltonians. The first model is based on the use of superadiabatic quantum teleport…
Transitionless quantum driving achieves adiabatic evolution in a hurry, using a counter-diabatic Hamiltonian to stifle non-adiabatic transitions. Here this strategy is cast in terms of a generator of adiabatic transport, leading to a classical analogue: dissipationless classical driving. For the single-particle piston, this approach yields simple and exact expressions for both the classical and quantal counter-diabatic terms. These results are further generalized to even-power-law potentials in one degree of freedom.
The protocol of quantum annealing is applied to an optimization problem with a one-dimensional continuous degree of freedom, a variant of the problem proposed by Shinomoto and Kabashima. The energy landscape has a number of local minima, and the classical approach of simulated annealing is predicted to have a logarithmically slow convergence to the global minimum. We show by extensive numerical analyses that quantum annealing yields a power law convergence, thus an exponential improvement over simulated annealing. The power is larger, and thus the convergence is faster, than a prediction by an…
Quantum annealing is guaranteed to find the ground state of optimization problems in the adiabatic limit. Recent work [Phys. Rev. X 6, 031010 (2016)] has found that for some barrier tunneling problems, quantum annealing can be run much faster than is adiabatically required. Specifically, an $n$-qubit optimization problem was presented for which a non-adiabatic, or diabatic, annealing algorithm requires only constant runtime, while an adiabatic annealing algorithm requires a runtime polynomial in $n$. Here we show that this non-adiabatic speed-up is a direct result of a specific symmetry in the…
We present Counterdiabatic Reverse Annealing, a novel quantum annealing protocol that extends the range of application of reverse annealing to the previously inaccessible short-time domain. This is achieved by exploiting approximate counterdiabatic driving expanded in low-order nested commutators. In this work, we offer a comparative study of the performance of this new technique to that of unassisted reverse annealing in terms of metrics such as the ground-state fidelity and the time to solution. We provide a quantitative measure of the energetic cost of counterdiabatic reverse annealing and …
Simulated quantum annealing based on the path-integral Monte Carlo is one of the most common tools to simulate quantum annealing on classical hardware. Nevertheless, it is in principle highly non-trivial whether or not this classical algorithm can correctly reproduce the quantum dynamics of quantum annealing, particularly in the diabatic regime. We study this problem numerically through the generalized Kibble-Zurek mechanism of defect distribution in the simplest ferromagnetic one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with and without coupling to the environment. We find that,in the absence…
Shortcuts to adiabaticity provide a general approach to mimic adiabatic quantum processes via arbitrarily fast evolutions in Hilbert space. For these counter-diabatic evolutions, higher speed comes at higher energy cost. Here, the counter-diabatic theory is employed as a minimal energy demanding scheme for speeding up adiabatic tasks. As a by-product, we show that this approach can be used to obtain infinite classes of transitionless models, including time-independent Hamiltonians under certain conditions over the eigenstates of the original Hamiltonian. We apply these results to investigate s…

We propose a nonadiabatic approach to quantum annealing, in which we repeat quantum annealing in nonadiabatic time scales, and collect the final states of many realizations to find the ground state among them. In this way, we replace the diffculty of long annealing time in adiabatic quantum annealing by another problem of the number of nonsidabatic (short-time) trials. The one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model is used to test this idea, and it is shown that nonadiabatic quantum annealing has the same computational complexity to find the ground state as the conventional adiabatic anneali…
Classical and quantum annealing is discussed for a kinetically constrained chain of $N$ non-interacting asymmetric double wells, represented by Ising spins in a longitudinal field $h$. It is shown that in certain cases, where the kinetic constraints may arise from infinitely high but vanishingly narrow barriers appearing in the relaxation path of the system, quantum annealing exploiting the quantum-mechanical penetration of sufficiently narrow barriers may be far more efficient than its thermal counterpart. We have used a semiclassical picture of scattering dynamics to do our simulation for th…
Finding the exact counterdiabatic potential is, in principle, particularly demanding. Following recent progresses about variational strategies to approximate the counterdiabatic operator, in this paper we apply this technique to the quantum annealing of the $p$-spin model. In particular, for $ p = 3 $ we find a new form of the counterdiabatic potential originating from a cyclic ansatz, that allows us to have optimal fidelity even for extremely short dynamics, independently of the size of the system. We compare our results with a nested commutator ansatz, recently proposed in P. W. Claeys, M. P…
