As the densities in the interior of neutron stars exceed those of terrestrial nuclear experiments, they provide a scope for studying the nature of dense matter under extreme conditions. The composition of the inner core of neutron stars is highly uncertain, and it is speculated that exotic forms of matter such as hyperons may appear there. Gravitational waves emitted by unstable oscillation modes in neutron stars contain information about their interior composition and therefore allow us to probe the interior directly. Recently, a systematic investigation of f-mode oscillations in neutron stars revealed the role of the uncertainty in nuclear saturation parameters, particularly the effective nucleon mass, on its frequency. In this work, we study the influence of the appearance of hyperons on f-mode oscillation frequencies and therefore on the emission of gravitational waves. We also speculate whether a future detection of f-mode frequencies could provide a possibility of probing the presence of hyperons in the neutron star core.
In this work we review the role of hyperons on the properties of neutron and proto-neutron stars. In particular, we revise the so-called "hyperon puzzle", go over some of the solutions proposed to tackle it, and discuss the implications that the recent measurements of unusually high neutron star masses have on our present knowledge of hypernuclear physics. We reexamine also the role of hyperons on the cooling properties of newly born neutron stars and on the so-called r-mode instability.
With the discovery of massive neutron stars such as PSR J1614-2230, the question has arisen whether exotic matter such as hyperons can exist in the neutron star core. We examine the conditions under which hyperons can exist in massive neutron stars. We consistently investigate the vector meson-hyperon coupling, going from SU(6) quark model to a broader SU(3) symmetry. We propose that the maximum neutron star mass decreases linearly with the strangeness content f_s of the neutron star core as M_max(f_s) = M_max(0) - 0.6 M_solar (f_s/0.1), which seems to be independent of the underlying nuclear …
Neutron star tidal deformability extracted from gravitational wave data provides a novel probe to the interior neutron star structures and the associated nuclear equation of state (EOS). Instead of the popular composition of nucleons and leptons in neutron stars, we include hyperons and examine the role of hyperons in the tidal deformability and its impact on the symmetry energy in a relativistic mean-field approach with the density-dependent parametrizations. The hyperons are found to have significant impact on the deformability, correlated sensitively with the onset density and fraction of h…
The $^{1}S_{0}$ nucleonic superfluids are investigated within the relativistic mean-field model and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory in hyperonic neutron stars. The $^{1}S_{0}$ pairing gaps of neutrons and protons are calculated based on the Reid soft-core interaction as the nucleon-nucleon interaction. We have studied particularly the influence of hyperons degrees of freedom on the $^{1}S_{0}$ nucleonic pairing gap in neutron star matter. It is found that the appearance of hyperons has little impact on baryonic density range and size for the $^{1}S_{0}$ neutronic pairing gap, the $^{1}S_{0}$ …
Brueckner theory is used to investigate the in-medium properties of a $Λ$-hyperon in nuclear and neutron matter, based on hyperon-nucleon interactions derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory (EFT). It is shown that the resulting $Λ$ single-particle potential $U_Λ(p_Λ=0,ρ)$ becomes strongly repulsive for densities $ρ$ of two-to-three times that of normal nuclear matter. Adding a density-dependent effective $ΛN$-interaction constructed from chiral $ΛNN$ three-body forces increases the repulsion further. Consequences of these findings for neutron stars are discussed. It is argued that …
The FSU2H equation-of-state model, originally developed to describe cold neutron star matter with hyperonic cores, is extended to finite temperature. Results are presented for a wide range of temperatures and lepton fractions, which cover the conditions met in protoneutron star matter, neutron star mergers and supernova explosions. It is found that the temperature effects on the thermodynamical observables and the composition of the neutron star core are stronger when the hyperonic degrees of freedom are considered. An evaluation of the temperature and density dependence of the thermal index l…

Using various kinds of relativistic mean-field models as well as the quark-meson coupling model, we study in detail the properties of neutron stars. We find that the equation of state in SU(3) flavor symmetry can support a neutron star with mass of $(1.8 \sim 2.1) M_{\odot}$ even if hyperons exist inside the core of a neutron star.
The constituents of cold dense matter are still far from being understood. However, neutron star observations such as the recently observed pulsar PSR J1614-2230 with a mass of 1.97+/-0.04 M_solar help to considerably constrain the hadronic equation of state (EoS). We systematically investigate the influence of the hyperon potentials on the stiffness of the EoS. We find that they have but little influence on the maximum mass compared to the inclusion of an additional vector meson mediating repulsive interaction amongst hyperons. The new mass limit can only be reached with this additional meson…
In this work I briefly review some of the effects of hyperons on the properties of neutron and proto-neutron stars. In particular, I revise the problem of the strong softening of the EoS, and the consequent reduction of the maximum mass, induced by the presence of hyperons, a puzzle which has become more intringuing and difficult to solve due the recent measurements of the unusually high masses of the millisecond pulsars PSR J1903+0327 ($1.667\pm 0.021 M_\odot$), PSR J1614-2230 ($1.97 \pm 0.04 M_\odot$), and PSR J0348+0432 ($2.01 \pm 0.04 M_\odot$). Some of the solutions proposed to tackle thi…
The existence of high mass ($\sim 2M_{\odot}$) pulsars PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 requires the compact star matter to be described by a stiff equation of state (EoS). Presence of hyperons in neutron stars leads to a softening of the EoS that results in a decrease of the maximum neutron-star mass below the measured values of masses for PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 pulsars if one exploits ordinary relativistic mean-field (RMF) models (hyperon puzzle). However, within an RMF EoS with a sigma-scaled hadron effective masses and coupling constants, the maximum neutron-star mass remains a…
We reexamine the equation of state for the nucleonic and hyperonic inner core of neutron stars that satisfies the 2$M_{\odot}$ observations as well as the recent determinations of stellar radii below 13 km, while fulfilling the saturation properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei together with the constraints on the high-density nuclear pressure coming from heavy-ion collisions. The recent nucleonic FSU2R and hyperonic FSU2H models are fine tuned improving the density dependence of pure neutron matter at subsaturation densities. The corresponding nuclear matter properties at saturation, t…
The so called "hyperon puzzle", i.e. the difficulty to reconcile the measured masses of neutron stars (NSs) with the presence of hyperons in their interiors, is one of the hot topics in astrophysics which is stimulating copious experimental and theoretical research in hypernuclear physics. After illustrating the origin of the hyperon puzzle, I discuss some of its possible solutions, and particularly those related to the role of hyperonic two- and three-body interactions on the equation of state of dense matter. Afterward, I discuss a possibility to circumvent the hyperon puzzle allowing for th…
We review the composition and the equation of state of the hyperonic core of neutron stars at finite temperature within a relativistic mean-field approach. We make use of the new FSU2H* model, which is built upon the FSU2H scheme by improving on the Xi potential according to the recent analysis on the Xi atoms, and we extend it to include finite temperature corrections. The calculations are done for a wide range of densities, temperatures and charge fractions, thus exploring the different conditions that can be found in protoneutron stars, binary mergers remnants and supernovae explosions. The…
The theoretical status of the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions is reviewed, paying a special attention to chiral effective field theories. Results on hyperons in dense matter are presented and the consequences for the properties of neutron stars are analyzed.
We consider transport properties of the hypernuclear matter in neutron star cores. In particular, we calculate the thermal conductivity, the shear viscosity, and the momentum transfer rates for np$Σ^{-}Λeμ$ composition of dense matter in $β$--equilibrium for baryon number densities in the range $0.1-1$~fm$^{-3}$. The calculations are based on baryon interactions treated within the framework of the non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory. Bare nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions are described by the Argonne v18 phenomenological potential supplemented with the Urbana IX three-nucleon force.…

We present two recent parametrizations of the equation of state (FSU2R and FSU2H models) that reproduce the properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei, fulfill constraints on high-density matter stemming from heavy-ion collisions, produce 2$M_{\odot}$ neutron stars, and generate neutron star radii below 13 km. Making use of these equations of state, cooling simulations for isolated neutron stars are performed. We find that two of the models studied, FSU2R (with nucleons) and, in particular, FSU2H (with nucleons and hyperons), show very good agreement with cooling observations, even without…
We develop a new equation of state (EoS) table involving thermal (anti)kaons, Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^{-}$ mesons and $Λ$-hyperons for core-collapse supernova and neutron star merger simulations. This EoS table is based on a finite temperature density-dependent relativistic hadron field theory where baryon-baryon interaction is mediated by scalar $σ$, vector $ω$ and $ρ$ mesons, using the parameter set DD2 for nucleons. The repulsive hyperon-hyperon interaction is mediated by an additional strange $ϕ$ meson. The EoS for the $K^-$ condensed matter is also calculated within the framework o…
We present the novel finite-temperature FSU2H$^*$ equation-of-state model that covers a wide range of temperatures and lepton fractions for the conditions in proto-neutron stars, neutron star mergers and supernovae. The temperature effects on the thermodynamical observables and the composition of the neutron star core are stronger when the hyperonic degrees of freedom are considered. We pay a special attention to the temperature and density dependence of the thermal index in the presence of hyperons and conclude that the true thermal effects cannot be reproduced with the use of a constant $Γ$ …
Investigations of thermal evolution of neutron stars with hyperon cores require neutrino emissivities for many neutrino reactions involving strongly degenerate particles (nucleons, hyperons, electrons, muons). We calculate the angular integrals $I_n$ (over orientations of momenta of $n$ degenerate particles) for major neutrino reactions with $n$ =3, 4, 5 at all possible combinations of particle Fermi momenta. The integrals $I_n$ are necessary ingredients for constructing a uniform database of neutrino emissivities in dense nucleon-hyperon matter. The results can also be used in many problems o…

Numerical simulations for the merger of binary neutron stars are performed in full general relativity incorporating both nucleonic and hyperonic finite-temperature equations of state (EOS) and neutrino cooling for the first time. It is found that even for the hyperonic EOS, a hypermassive neutron star is first formed after the merger for the typical total mass $\approx$ 2.7M\bigodot, and subsequently collapses to a black hole (BH). It is shown that hyperons play a substantial role in the post-merger dynamics, torus formation around the BH, and emission of gravitational waves (GWs). In particul…
We investigate the $f$-mode oscillation of the dark matter admixed hyperon star within the relativistic Cowling approximation. The macroscopic properties are calculated with the relativistic mean-field equation of states by assuming that the dark matter particles are inside the star. The $f$-mode oscillation frequencies (only for $l=2$) are calculated with four different neutron star equation of states. We also check the effects of hyperons/dark matter and hyperons with dark matter equation of states on the $f$-mode oscillations varying with different astrophysical quantities such as mass ($M$…
In this work we present a newly constructed equation of state (EoS) --applicable to stellar core collapse and neutron star mergers--, including the entire baryon octet. Our EoS is compatible with the main constraints from nuclear physics and, in particular, with a maximum mass for cold beta-equilibrated neutron stars of 2 solar masses in agreement with recent observations. As an application of our new EoS, we compute numerical stationary models for rapidly (rigidly) rotating hot neutron stars. We consider maximum masses of hot stars, such as proto-neutron stars or hypermassive neutron stars in…
We consider sound waves in superfluid nucleon-hyperon matter of massive neutron-star cores. We calculate and analyze the speeds of sound modes and their damping times due to the shear viscosity and non-equilibrium weak processes of particle transformations. For that, we employ the dissipative relativistic hydrodynamics of a superfluid nucleon-hyperon mixture, formulated recently [M.E. Gusakov and E.M. Kantor, Phys. Rev. D78, 083006 (2008)]. We demonstrate that the damping times of sound modes calculated using this hydrodynamics and the ordinary (nonsuperfluid) one, can differ from each other b…
In the light of the recent discovery of a neutron star with a mass accurately determined to be almost two solar masses, it has been suggested that hyperons cannot play a role in the equation of state of dense matter in $β$-equilibrium. We re-examine this issue in the most recent development of the quark-meson coupling model. Within a relativistic Hartree-Fock approach and including the full tensor structure at the vector-meson-baryon vertices, we find that not only must hyperons appear in matter at the densities relevant to such a massive star but that the maximum mass predicted is completely …
This thesis focuses on a variety of active research topics, such as nuclear matter, neutron stars, and phase transition within the framework of the RMF model. We use the previously successful effective field theory-driven Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) and density-dependent RMF (DD-RMF)formalisms for analyzing hadron matter to examine the infinite nuclear matter and neutron stars. The presence of exotic phases such as quarks has been investigated using the MIT Bag model and its variants, such as the vBag model, at various bag constants. The other exotic phases, such as hyperons, have also been …
Using a extended version of the Quantum Hadrodynamics (QHD), I propose a new microscopic equation of state (EoS) able to correctly reproduce the main properties of symmetric nuclear matter at the saturation density, as well produce massive neutron stars and satisfactory results for the radius and the tidal parameter $Λ$. I show that even when hyperons are present, this EoS is able to reproduce at least 2.00 solar masses neutron star. The constraints about the radius of a $2.00M_\odot$ and the minimum mass that enable direct Urca effect are also checked.
The possible $^{1}S_{0}$ protonic superfluidity is investigated in neutron star matter, and the corresponding energy gap as a function of baryonic density is calculated on the basis of BCS gap equation. We have discussed particularly the influence of hyperon degrees of freedom on $^{1}S_{0}$ protonic superfluidity. It is found that the appearance of hyperons leads to a slight decrease of $^{1}S_{0}$ protonic pairing energy gap in most density range of existing $^{1}S_{0}$ protonic superfluidity. However, when the baryonic density $ρ_{B}>$0.377 (or 0.409) fm${^{-3}}$ for TM1 (or TMA) parameter …
We study the thermal evolution of neutron stars in the presence of hyperons or kaons in the core. Our results indicate that the nucleon and hyperon direct Urca processes play crucial roles for the cooling of neutron stars. The presence of hyperons drives fast cooling mechanisms in two ways: 1) it allows the hyperon direct Urca prior to the nucleon direct Urca, 2) and it makes the nucleon direct Urca more feasible by reducing the neutron Fermi momentum. We found that the neutron star equation of state (EOS) with hyperons can be consistent with both mass and temperature observations. We also fou…
We systematically study the properties of pure nucleonic and hyperonic magnetic stars using a density-dependent relativistic mean field (DD-RMF) equations of state. We explore several parameter sets and hyperon coupling schemes within the DD-RMF formalism. We focus on sets that are in better agreement with nuclear and other astrophysical data, while generating heavy neutron stars. Magnetic field effects are included in the matter equation of state and in general relativity solutions, which in addition fulfill Maxwell's equations. We find that pure nucleonic matter, even without magnetic field …
We present a systematic study of $f$-mode oscillations in neutron stars containing hyperons, extending recent results obtained within the Cowling approximation to linearized General Relativity. Employing a relativistic mean field model, we find that the Cowling approximation can overestimate the quadrupolar $f$-mode frequency of neutron stars by up to 30\% compared to the frequency obtained in the linearized general relativistic formalism. Imposing current astrophysical constraints, we derive updated empirical relations for gravitational wave asteroseismology. The frequency and damping time of…
We perform cooling simulations for isolated neutron stars using recently developed equations of state for their core. The equations of state are obtained from new parametrizations of the FSU2 relativistic mean-field functional that reproduce the properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei, while fulfilling the restrictions on high-density matter deduced from heavy-ion collisions, measurements of massive 2$M_{\odot}$ neutron stars, and neutron star radii below 13 km. We find that two of the models studied, FSU2R (with nucleons) and in particular FSU2H (with nucleons and hyperons), show very …
In this contribution, we describe new chemically-equilibrated charge-neutral hybrid equations of state for neutron stars. They present a first-order phase transition to quark matter and differentiate by the particle population considered and how these particles interact. While some equations of state contain just nucleons and up, down-quarks, others also contain hyperons, Delta baryons, and strange quarks. The hybrid equations of state, together with corresponding hadronic ones, are available on the CompOSE repository and can be used for different astrophysical applications.
We develop new hyperon equation of state (EoS) tables for core-collapse supernova simulations and neutron stars. These EoS tables are based on a density-dependent relativistic hadron field theory where baryon-baryon interaction is mediated by mesons, using the parameter set DD2 from Typel et al. (2010) for nucleons. Furthermore, light and heavy nuclei along with the interacting nucleons are treated in the nuclear statistical equilibrium model of Hempel and Schaffner-Bielich which includes excluded volume effects. Of all possible hyperons, we consider only the contribution of $Λ$s. We have deve…
In the present study we analyse the effect of the density dependence of the symmetry energy on the hyperonic content of neutron stars within a relativistic mean field description of stellar matter. For the $Λ$-hyperon, we consider parametrizations calibrated to $Λ$-hypernuclei. For the $Σ$ and $Ξ$-hyperons uncertainties that reflect the present lack of experimental information on $Σ$ and $Ξ$-hypernuclei are taken into account. We perform our study considering nuclear equations of state that predict two solar mass stars, and satisfy other well settled nuclear matter properties. The effect of th…
Hyperons are essential constituents in the neutron star interior. The poorly-known hyperonic interaction is a source of uncertainty for studying laboratory hypernuclei and neutron star observations. In this work, we perform Bayesian inference of phenomenological hyperon-nucleon interactions using the tidal-deformability measurement of the GW170817 binary neutron star merger as detected by LIGO/Virgo and the mass-radius measurements of PSR J0030+0541 and PSR J0740+6620 as detected by NICER. The analysis is based on a set of stiff relativistic neutron-star-matter equation of states with hyperons…
We analyse the oscillations of general relativistic superfluid hyperon stars, following the approach suggested by Gusakov & Kantor and Gusakov et al. and generalizing it to the nucleon-hyperon matter. We show that the equations governing the oscillations can be split into two weakly coupled systems with the coupling parameters $s_{\rm e}$, $s_{\rm μ}$, and $s_{\rm str}$. The approximation $s_{\rm e} = s_{\rm μ} = s_{\rm str} = 0$ (decoupling approximation) allows one to drastically simplify the calculations of stellar oscillation spectra. An efficiency of the presented scheme is illustrated by…
In this work, we study matter in the cores of proto-neutron stars, focusing on the impact of their composition on the stellar structure. We begin by examining the effects of finite temperature (through a fixed entropy per baryon) and lepton fraction on purely nucleonic matter by making use of the DSH model . We then turn our attention to a relativistic mean-field model containing exotic degrees of freedom, the Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model, again, under the conditions of finite temperature and trapped neutrinos. In the latter, since both hyperons and quarks are found in the cores of large-mass…
We propose and apply a new parameterization of the modified chiral effective model to study rotating neutron stars with hyperon cores in the framework of the relativistic mean-field theory. The inclusion of mesonic cross couplings in the model has improved the density content of the symmetry energy slope parameters, which are in agreement with the findings from recent terrestrial experiments. The bulk viscosity of the hyperonic medium is analyzed to investigate its role in the suppression of gravitationally driven $r$-modes. The hyperonic bulk viscosity coefficient caused by non-leptonic weak …
