We show that the observed time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) of the superconducting state in $\mathrm{Sr}_{2}\mathrm{Ru}\mathrm{O}_{4}$ can be understood as originating from inhomogeneous strain fields near edge dislocations of the crystal. Specifically, we argue that, without strain inhomogeneities, $\mathrm{Sr}_{2}\mathrm{Ru}\mathrm{O}_{4}$ is a single-component, time-reversal symmetric superconductor, likely with $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ symmetry. However, due to the strong strain inhomogeneities generated by dislocations, a slowly-decaying sub-leading pairing state contributes to the condensate in significant portions of the sample. As it phase winds around the dislocation, time-reversal symmetry is locally broken. Global phase locking and TRSB occur at a sharp Ising transition that is not accompanied by a change of the single-particle gap and yields a very small heat capacity anomaly. Our model thus explains the puzzling absence of a measurable heat capacity anomaly at the TRSB transition in strained samples, and the dilute nature of the time-reversal symmetry broken state probed by muon spin rotation experiments. We propose that plastic deformations of the material may be used to manipulate the onset of broken time-reversal symmetry.
We propose a new type of non-uniform condensate state in the presence of time-reversal symmetry. The underlying platform of this state is a corrugated honeycomb lattice which exhibits an inhomogeneous pseudo magnetic field. Using the self-consistent tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism, we show that an s-wave pairing of chiral carriers in the presence of an inhomogeneous pseudo magnetic field results in a spatially modulated order parameter with the half wavelength of the corrugation. The manner of modulation depends on the fundamental directions of the honeycomb lattice, the zigzag an…
We present a comprehensive study of two of the most experimentally relevant extensions of Kitaev's spinless model of a 1D p-wave superconductor: those involving (i) longer range hopping and superconductivity and (ii) inhomogeneous potentials. We commence with a pedagogical review of the spinless model and, as a means of characterizing topological phases exhibited by the systems studied here, we introduce bulk topological invariants as well as those derived from an explicit consideration of boundary modes. In time-reversal invariant systems, we find that the longer range hopping leads to topolo…
We investigate non-Abelian statistics of Majorana Kramers pairs (MKPs) in a network system of one-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductors by using numerical simulations of braiding dynamics, and examine the tolerance against various perturbations which may cause decoherence of MKPs. We, first, consider effects of a magnetic field which breaks time-reversal symmetry. In contrast to a naive expectation, the non-Abelian braiding of MKPs is robust against applied magnetic fields provided that the initial and final states of a braiding process are invariant under the combina…
We investigate the superconducting properties of Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ using low-temperature resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. We find that Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ {exhibits type-II} superconductivity with a superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 3.5 (1)$\,K. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from transverse-field $μ$SR spectra is best modeled using an isotropic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer type $s$-wave gap symmetry with $2Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C} = 2.84(2)$. However, the zero-…
We show that superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry have very specific magnetic and electric responses to inhomogeneous heating. A local heating of such superconductors induces a magnetic field with a profile that is sensitive to the presence of domain walls and crystalline anisotropy of superconducting states. A nonstationary heating process produces an electric field and a charge imbalance in different bands. These effects can be measured and used to distinguish $s+is$ and $s+id$ superconducting states in the candidate materials such as Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$.
Recently, a theoretical study [Li {\it et al.},~npj Quantum Materials 6, 36 (2021)] investigated a model of a disordered $d$-wave superconductor, and reported local time-reversal symmetry breaking current loops for sufficiently high disorder levels. Since the pure $d$-wave superconducting state does not break time-reversal symmetry, it is surprising that such persistent currents arise purely from nonmagnetic disorder. Here we perform a detailed theoretical investigation of such disorder-induced orbital currents, and show that the occurrence of the currents can be traced to local extended $s$-w…
We report a fluctuation-driven state of matter that develops near an accidental degeneracy point of two symmetry-distinct primary phases. Due to symmetry mixing, this bound-state order exhibits unique signatures, incompatible with either parent phase. Within a field-theoretical formalism, we derive the generic phase diagram for system with bound-state order, study its response to strain, and evaluate analytic expressions for a specific model. Our results support the $(d + ig)$-superconducting state as a candidate for $\mathrm{Sr}_{2}\mathrm{Ru}\mathrm{O}_{4}$: Most noticeably, the derived stra…

FeSe is a unique member of the family of iron-based superconductors, not only because of the high values of $T_{c}$ in FeSe monolayer, but also because in bulk FeSe superconductivity emerges inside a nematic phase without competing with long-range magnetic order. Near $T_{c}$, superconducting order necessarily has $s+d$ symmetry, because nematic order couples linearly the $s$-wave and $d$-wave harmonics of the superconducting order parameter. Here we argue that the near-degeneracy between $s$-wave and $d$-wave pairing instabilities in FeSe, combined with the sign-change of the nematic order pa…
We consider the competition between the conventional s-wave and the triplet Balian-Werthamer or the B-phase pairings in the doped three dimensional narrow gap semiconductors, such as $\mathrm{Cu}_x\mathrm{Bi}_2\mathrm{Se}_3$ and $\mathrm{Sn}_{1-x}\mathrm{In}_x\mathrm{Te}$. When the coupling constants of the two contending channels are comparable, we find a simultaneously time-reversal and parity violating $p + is$ state at low temperatures, which provides an example of dynamic axionic state of matter. In contradistinction to the time-reversal invariant, topological B-phase, the $p + is$ state …
The cryptoferromagnetic state (the state with intrinsic domain structure) in superconducting ferromagnets subjected to external magnetic field is studied theoretically. Ferromagnetism originates either from electron spin or the intrinsic angular momentum of Cooper pairs (chiral p-wave superconductors like $\mathrm{Sr_2 Ru O_4}$). The phase transitions towards the Meissner and the mixed states are investigated, and the magnetic phase diagrams are obtained. Cryptoferromagnetism, as a form coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism, can be detected by observation of magnetization curves …
The ordinary magnetoresistance (MR) of doped semiconductors is positive and quadratic in a low magnetic field, B, as it should be in the framework of the Boltzmann kinetic theory or in the conventional hopping regime. We observe an unusual highly-anisotropic in-plane MR in graphite, which is neither quadratic nor always positive. In a certain current direction MR is negative and linear in B in fields below a few tens of mT with a crossover to a positive MR at higher fields, while in a perpendicular current direction we observe a giant super-linear and positive MR. These extraordinary MRs are r…
We present polar Kerr effect measurements of the filled skutterudite superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$. Simultaneous AC susceptibility measurements allow us to observe the superconducting transition under the influence of heating from the optical beam. A nonzero Kerr angle $θ_K$ develops below the superconducting transition, saturating at $\sim 300$ nrad at low temperatures. This result is repeated across several measurements of multiple samples. By extrapolating the measured $θ_K(T)$ to zero optical power, we are able to show that the Kerr angle onset temperature in one set of measurements is …
A boundary between two d-wave superconductors or an s-wave and a d-wave superconductor generally breaks time-reversal symmetry and can generate spontaneous currents due to proximity effect. On the other hand, surfaces and interfaces in d-wave superconductors can produce localized current-carrying states by supporting the T-breaking combination of dominant and subdominant order parameters. We investigate spontaneous currents in the presence of both mechanisms and show that at low temperature, counter-intuitively, the subdominant coupling decreases the amplitude of the spontaneous current due to…
Recent $μ$SR measurements on SrPtAs revealed time-reversal-symmetry breaking with the onset of superconductivity [Biswas et al., Phys. Rev. B 87, 180503(R) (2013)], suggesting an unconventional superconducting state. We investigate this possibility via functional renormalization group and find a chiral $(d+\mathrm{i}d)$-wave order parameter favored by the multiband fermiology and hexagonal symmetry of SrPtAs. This $(d+\mathrm{i}d)$-wave state exhibits significant gap anisotropies as well as gap differences on the different bands, but only has point nodes on one of the bands at the Brillouin zo…
The superconducting state of the filled skutterudite alloy series Pr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$Pt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ has been systematically studied by specific heat, zero-field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), and superconducting critical field measurements. An additional inhomogeneous local magnetic field, indicative of broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS), is observed in the superconducting states of the alloys. For $x \lesssim 0.5$ the broken-TRS phase sets in below a temperature $T_m$ distinctly lower than the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. For $x \gtrsim 0.5$ $T_m \approx T_c$. The local fie…
We discuss the minimum value of the zero-bias differential conductance $G_{\textrm{min}}$ in a junction consisting of a normal metal and a nodal superconductor preserving time-reversal symmetry. Using the quasiclassical Green function method, we show that $G_{\textrm{min}}$ is quantized at $ (4e^2/h) N_{\mathrm{ZES}}$ in the limit of strong impurity scatterings in the normal metal. The integer $N_{\mathrm{ZES}}$ represents the number of perfect transmission channels through the junction. An analysis of the chiral symmetry of the Hamiltonian indicates that $N_{\mathrm{ZES}}$ corresponds to the …
We report results of a microscopic calculation of a second-order phase transition into a state breaking time-reversal and translational invariance along pair-breaking edges of $d$-wave superconductors. By solving a tight-binding model through exact diagonalization with the Bogoliubov-de~Gennes method, we find that such a state with current loops having a diameter of a few coherence lengths is energetically favorable below $T^*$ between 10%-20% of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of bulk superconductivity, depending on model parameters. This extends our previous studies of such a phase crystal within the quasi…
