This paper demonstrates a practical method that can correct spatial varying blur from a set of images of the same object. The algorithm jointly estimates the object and local point spread functions~(PSF). The method prioritizes sections with small spatial variation in the PSF for deconvolution. This novel approach can handle large translations in the local PSFs, hence the algorithm is able to correct for morph in the images. Robustness to noise is demonstrated in numerical simulations. Numerical experiments are conducted where the performance of the algorithm is compared to a state-of-the-art method found in literature. The algorithm can be used in situation with space-temporal variation of the PSF and can be applied in situations where the signal-to-noise ratio is low.
Blind deconvolution is a challenging problem, but in low-light it is even more difficult. Existing algorithms, both classical and deep-learning based, are not designed for this condition. When the photon shot noise is strong, conventional deconvolution methods fail because (1) the image does not have enough signal-to-noise ratio to perform the blur estimation; (2) While deep neural networks are powerful, many of them do not consider the forward process. When the noise is strong, these networks fail to simultaneously deblur and denoise; (3) While iterative schemes are known to be robust in the …
In this paper, we present a method for single-shot blind deconvolution incorporating a coded aperture (CA). In this method, we utilize the CA, inserted on the pupil plane, as support constraints in blind deconvolution. Not only an object but also a point spread function of turbulence are estimated from a single captured image by a reconstruction algorithm with the CA support. The proposed method is demonstrated by a simulation and an experiment in which point sources are recovered under severe turbulence.
Image production tools do not always create a clear image, noisy and blurry images are sometimes created. Among these cases, Poissonian noise is one of the most famous noises that appear in medical images and images taken in astronomy. Blurred image with Poissonian noise obscures important details that are of great importance in medicine or astronomy. Therefore, studying and increasing the quality of images that are affected by this type of noise is always considered by researchers. In this paper, in the first step, based on framelet transform, a local minimal prior is introduced, and in the n…
Deconvolution serves as a computational means of removing the effect of optical aberrations from recorded images and is employed in many technical and scientific fields of study. In most imaging scenarios the nature of the blurring kernel or point-spread function (PSF) of the imaging system is unknown and both the object and PSF can be estimated using different forms of mathematical optimisation. The Tangential Iterative Projections (TIP) algorithm is a multi-frame deconvolution framework where multiple images can be combined to obtain a single estimate of the object. It is shown here that thi…

Deconvolution microscopy has been extensively used to improve the resolution of the wide-field fluorescent microscopy, but the performance of classical approaches critically depends on the accuracy of a model and optimization algorithms. Recently, the convolutional neural network (CNN) approaches have been studied as a fast and high performance alternative. Unfortunately, the CNN approaches usually require matched high resolution images for supervised training. In this paper, we present a novel unsupervised cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (cycleGAN) with a linear blur kernel, w…
Image blurring refers to the degradation of an image wherein the image's overall sharpness decreases. Image blurring is caused by several factors. Additionally, during the image acquisition process, noise may get added to the image. Such a noisy and blurred image can be represented as the image resulting from the convolution of the original image with the associated point spread function, along with additive noise. However, the blurred image often contains inadequate information to uniquely determine the plausible original image. Based on the availability of blurring information, image deblurr…
This paper addresses the problem of high-resolution Doppler blood flow estimation from an ultrafast sequence of ultrasound images. Formulating the separation of clutter and blood components as an inverse problem has been shown in the literature to be a good alternative to spatio-temporal singular value decomposition (SVD)-based clutter filtering. In particular, a deconvolution step has recently been embedded in such a problem to mitigate the influence of the experimentally measured point spread function (PSF) of the imaging system. Deconvolution was shown in this context to improve the accurac…

Defocus blur is a physical consequence of the optical sensors used in most cameras. Although it can be used as a photographic style, it is commonly viewed as an image degradation modeled as the convolution of a sharp image with a spatially-varying blur kernel. Motivated by the advance of blur estimation methods in the past years, we propose a non-blind approach for image deblurring that can deal with spatially-varying kernels. We introduce two encoder-decoder sub-networks that are fed with the blurry image and the estimated blur map, respectively, and produce as output the deblurred (deconvolv…
With Aperture synthesis (AS) technique, a number of small antennas can assemble to form a large telescope which spatial resolution is determined by the distance of two farthest antennas instead of the diameter of a single-dish antenna. Different from direct imaging system, an AS telescope captures the Fourier coefficients of a spatial object, and then implement inverse Fourier transform to reconstruct the spatial image. Due to the limited number of antennas, the Fourier coefficients are extremely sparse in practice, resulting in a very blurry image. To remove/reduce blur, "CLEAN" deconvolution…
We inspect all the deep learning based solutions and provide holistic understanding of various architectures that have evolved over the past few years to solve blind deblurring. The introductory work used deep learning to estimate some features of the blur kernel and then moved onto predicting the blur kernel entirely, which converts the problem into non-blind deblurring. The recent state of the art techniques are end to end, i.e., they don't estimate the blur kernel rather try to estimate the latent sharp image directly from the blurred image. The benchmarking PSNR and SSIM values on standard…
In this work, we study the problem of non-blind image deconvolution and propose a novel recurrent network architecture that leads to very competitive restoration results of high image quality. Motivated by the computational efficiency and robustness of existing large scale linear solvers, we manage to express the solution to this problem as the solution of a series of adaptive non-negative least-squares problems. This gives rise to our proposed Recurrent Least Squares Deconvolution Network (RLSDN) architecture, which consists of an implicit layer that imposes a linear constraint between its in…
We present a self-supervised and self-calibrating multi-shot approach to imaging through atmospheric turbulence, called TurbuGAN. Our approach requires no paired training data, adapts itself to the distribution of the turbulence, leverages domain-specific data priors, and can generalize from tens to thousands of measurements. We achieve such functionality through an adversarial sensing framework adapted from CryoGAN, which uses a discriminator network to match the distributions of captured and simulated measurements. Our framework builds on CryoGAN by (1) generalizing the forward measurement m…
State-of-the-art atmospheric turbulence image restoration methods utilize standard image processing tools such as optical flow, lucky region and blind deconvolution to restore the images. While promising results have been reported over the past decade, many of the methods are agnostic to the physical model that generates the distortion. In this paper, we revisit the turbulence restoration problem by analyzing the reference frame generation and the blind deconvolution steps in a typical restoration pipeline. By leveraging tools in large deviation theory, we rigorously prove the minimum number o…

Blind image deblurring is an important yet very challenging problem in low-level vision. Traditional optimization based methods generally formulate this task as a maximum-a-posteriori estimation or variational inference problem, whose performance highly relies on the handcraft priors for both the latent image and the blur kernel. In contrast, recent deep learning methods generally learn, from a large collection of training images, deep neural networks (DNNs) directly mapping the blurry image to the clean one or to the blur kernel, paying less attention to the physical degradation process of th…

Optical microscopy is an essential tool in biology and medicine. Imaging thin, yet non-flat objects in a single shot (without relying on more sophisticated sectioning setups) remains challenging as the shallow depth of field that comes with high-resolution microscopes leads to unsharp image regions and makes depth localization and quantitative image interpretation difficult. Here, we present a method that improves the resolution of light microscopy images of such objects by locally estimating image distortion while jointly estimating object distance to the focal plane. Specifically, we estimat…

Under low-light environment, handheld photography suffers from severe camera shake under long exposure settings. Although existing deblurring algorithms have shown promising performance on well-exposed blurry images, they still cannot cope with low-light snapshots. Sophisticated noise and saturation regions are two dominating challenges in practical low-light deblurring. In this work, we propose a novel non-blind deblurring method dubbed image and feature space Wiener deconvolution network (INFWIDE) to tackle these problems systematically. In terms of algorithm design, INFWIDE proposes a two-b…

We study the multi-channel sparse blind deconvolution (MCS-BD) problem, whose task is to simultaneously recover a kernel $\mathbf a$ and multiple sparse inputs $\{\mathbf x_i\}_{i=1}^p$ from their circulant convolution $\mathbf y_i = \mathbf a \circledast \mathbf x_i $ ($i=1,\cdots,p$). We formulate the task as a nonconvex optimization problem over the sphere. Under mild statistical assumptions of the data, we prove that the vanilla Riemannian gradient descent (RGD) method, with random initializations, provably recovers both the kernel $\mathbf a$ and the signals $\{\mathbf x_i\}_{i=1}^p$ up t…
In this paper, we consider the highly ill-posed problem of jointly recovering two real-valued signals from the phaseless measurements of their circular convolution. The problem arises in various imaging modalities such as Fourier ptychography, X-ray crystallography, and in visible light communication. We propose to solve this inverse problem using alternating gradient descent algorithm under two pretrained deep generative networks as priors; one is trained on sharp images and the other on blur kernels. The proposed recovery algorithm strives to find a sharp image and a blur kernel in the range…
We present a highly efficient blind restoration method to remove mild blur in natural images. Contrary to the mainstream, we focus on removing slight blur that is often present, damaging image quality and commonly generated by small out-of-focus, lens blur, or slight camera motion. The proposed algorithm first estimates image blur and then compensates for it by combining multiple applications of the estimated blur in a principled way. To estimate blur we introduce a simple yet robust algorithm based on empirical observations about the distribution of the gradient in sharp natural images. Our e…
