Text generative models (TGMs) excel in producing text that matches the style of human language reasonably well. Such TGMs can be misused by adversaries, e.g., by automatically generating fake news and fake product reviews that can look authentic and fool humans. Detectors that can distinguish text generated by TGM from human written text play a vital role in mitigating such misuse of TGMs. Recently, there has been a flurry of works from both natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) communities to build accurate detectors for English. Despite the importance of this problem, there is currently no work that surveys this fast-growing literature and introduces newcomers to important research challenges. In this work, we fill this void by providing a critical survey and review of this literature to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of this problem. We conduct an in-depth error analysis of the state-of-the-art detector and discuss research directions to guide future work in this exciting area.

Automatic extraction of cause-effect relationships from natural language texts is a challenging open problem in Artificial Intelligence. Most of the early attempts at its solution used manually constructed linguistic and syntactic rules on small and domain-specific data sets. However, with the advent of big data, the availability of affordable computing power and the recent popularization of machine learning, the paradigm to tackle this problem has slowly shifted. Machines are now expected to learn generic causal extraction rules from labelled data with minimal supervision, in a domain indepen…

This paper introduces a method for the automatic acquisition of a rich case representation from free text for process-oriented case-based reasoning. Case engineering is among the most complicated and costly tasks in implementing a case-based reasoning system. This is especially so for process-oriented case-based reasoning, where more expressive case representations are generally used and, in our opinion, actually required for satisfactory case adaptation. In this context, the ability to acquire cases automatically from procedural texts is a major step forward in order to reason on processes. W…

In this paper we present a simple re-ranking method for Automatic Sentence Simplification based on the noisy channel scheme. Instead of directly computing the best simplification given a complex text, the re-ranking method also considers the probability of the simple sentence to produce the complex counterpart, as well as the probability of the simple text itself, according to a language model. Our experiments show that combining these scores outperform the original system in three different English datasets, yielding the best known result in one of them. Adopting the noisy channel scheme open…

Solving mathematical word problems (MWPs) automatically is challenging, primarily due to the semantic gap between human-readable words and machine-understandable logics. Despite the long history dated back to the1960s, MWPs have regained intensive attention in the past few years with the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Solving MWPs successfully is considered as a milestone towards general AI. Many systems have claimed promising results in self-crafted and small-scale datasets. However, when applied on large and diverse datasets, none of the proposed methods in the literature achie…
Previous works related to automatic personality recognition focus on using traditional classification models with linguistic features. However, attentive neural networks with contextual embeddings, which have achieved huge success in text classification, are rarely explored for this task. In this project, we have two major contributions. First, we create the first dialogue-based personality dataset, FriendsPersona, by annotating 5 personality traits of speakers from Friends TV Show through crowdsourcing. Second, we present a novel approach to automatic personality recognition using pre-trained…
We propose a framework to automatically generate descriptive comments for source code blocks. While this problem has been studied by many researchers previously, their methods are mostly based on fixed template and achieves poor results. Our framework does not rely on any template, but makes use of a new recursive neural network called Code-RNN to extract features from the source code and embed them into one vector. When this vector representation is input to a new recurrent neural network (Code-GRU), the overall framework generates text descriptions of the code with accuracy (Rouge-2 value) s…

Language identification (LI) is the problem of determining the natural language that a document or part thereof is written in. Automatic LI has been extensively researched for over fifty years. Today, LI is a key part of many text processing pipelines, as text processing techniques generally assume that the language of the input text is known. Research in this area has recently been especially active. This article provides a brief history of LI research, and an extensive survey of the features and methods used so far in the LI literature. For describing the features and methods we introduce a …
Use of medical data, also known as electronic health records, in research helps develop and advance medical science. However, protecting patient confidentiality and identity while using medical data for analysis is crucial. Medical data can be in the form of tabular structures (i.e. tables), free-form narratives, and images. This study focuses on medical data in the free form longitudinal text. De-identification of electronic health records provides the opportunity to use such data for research without it affecting patient privacy, and avoids the need for individual patient consent. In recent …

Automatic term extraction (ATE) is a Natural Language Processing (NLP) task that eases the effort of manually identifying terms from domain-specific corpora by providing a list of candidate terms. As units of knowledge in a specific field of expertise, extracted terms are not only beneficial for several terminographical tasks, but also support and improve several complex downstream tasks, e.g., information retrieval, machine translation, topic detection, and sentiment analysis. ATE systems, along with annotated datasets, have been studied and developed widely for decades, but recently we obser…
In this paper, we present a corpus for use in automatic readability assessment and automatic text simplification of German. The corpus is compiled from web sources and consists of approximately 211,000 sentences. As a novel contribution, it contains information on text structure, typography, and images, which can be exploited as part of machine learning approaches to readability assessment and text simplification. The focus of this publication is on representing such information as an extension to an existing corpus standard.

Despite some recent advances, automatic text summarization remains unreliable, elusive, and of limited practical use in applications. Two main problems with current summarization methods are well known: evaluation and factual consistency. To address these issues, we propose a new automatic reference-less text summarization evaluation system that can measure the quality of any text summarization model with a set of generated facts based on factual consistency, comprehensiveness, and compression rate. As far as we know, our evaluation system is the first system that measures the overarching qual…

Automatic description generation from natural images is a challenging problem that has recently received a large amount of interest from the computer vision and natural language processing communities. In this survey, we classify the existing approaches based on how they conceptualize this problem, viz., models that cast description as either generation problem or as a retrieval problem over a visual or multimodal representational space. We provide a detailed review of existing models, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, we give an overview of the benchmark image dataset…

Large sense-annotated datasets are increasingly necessary for training deep supervised systems in Word Sense Disambiguation. However, gathering high-quality sense-annotated data for as many instances as possible is a laborious and expensive task. This has led to the proliferation of automatic and semi-automatic methods for overcoming the so-called knowledge-acquisition bottleneck. In this short survey we present an overview of sense-annotated corpora, annotated either manually- or (semi)automatically, that are currently available for different languages and featuring distinct lexical resources…

A recent approach for few-shot text classification is to convert textual inputs to cloze questions that contain some form of task description, process them with a pretrained language model and map the predicted words to labels. Manually defining this mapping between words and labels requires both domain expertise and an understanding of the language model's abilities. To mitigate this issue, we devise an approach that automatically finds such a mapping given small amounts of training data. For a number of tasks, the mapping found by our approach performs almost as well as hand-crafted label-to…

Alcohol abuse may lead to unsociable behavior such as crime, drunk driving, or privacy leaks. We introduce automatic drunk-texting prediction as the task of identifying whether a text was written when under the influence of alcohol. We experiment with tweets labeled using hashtags as distant supervision. Our classifiers use a set of N-gram and stylistic features to detect drunk tweets. Our observations present the first quantitative evidence that text contains signals that can be exploited to detect drunk-texting.
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) generates text which is most of the times devoid of any punctuation. Absence of punctuation is text can affect readability. Also, down stream NLP tasks such as sentiment analysis, machine translation, greatly benefit by having punctuation and sentence boundary information. We present an approach for automatic punctuation of text using a pretrained IndicBERT model. Inverse text normalization is done by hand writing weighted finite state transducer (WFST) grammars. We have developed this tool for 11 Indic languages namely Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati…
Recent advancements in neural language modelling make it possible to rapidly generate vast amounts of human-sounding text. The capabilities of humans and automatic discriminators to detect machine-generated text have been a large source of research interest, but humans and machines rely on different cues to make their decisions. Here, we perform careful benchmarking and analysis of three popular sampling-based decoding strategies---top-$k$, nucleus sampling, and untruncated random sampling---and show that improvements in decoding methods have primarily optimized for fooling humans. This comes …
This study is devoted to the automatic generation of German drama texts. We suggest an approach consisting of two key steps: fine-tuning a GPT-2 model (the outline model) to generate outlines of scenes based on keywords and fine-tuning a second model (the generation model) to generate scenes from the scene outline. The input for the neural model comprises two datasets: the German Drama Corpus (GerDraCor) and German Text Archive (Deutsches Textarchiv or DTA). In order to estimate the effectiveness of the proposed method, our models are compared with baseline GPT-2 models. Our models perform wel…

Automatic evaluations for natural language generation (NLG) conventionally rely on token-level or embedding-level comparisons with text references. This differs from human language processing, for which visual imagination often improves comprehension. In this work, we propose ImaginE, an imagination-based automatic evaluation metric for natural language generation. With the help of StableDiffusion, a state-of-the-art text-to-image generator, we automatically generate an image as the embodied imagination for the text snippet and compute the imagination similarity using contextual embeddings. Representing a text as a graph for obtaining automatic text summarization has been investigated for over ten years. With the development of attention or Transformer on natural language processing (NLP), it is possible to make a connection between the graph and attention structure for a text. In this paper, an attention matrix between the sentences of the whole text is adopted as a weighted adjacent matrix of a fully connected graph of the text, which can be produced through the pre-training language model. The GCN is further applied to the text graph model for classifying each node and finding…

Most learners fail to develop deep text comprehension when reading textbooks passively. Posing questions about what learners have read is a well-established way of fostering their text comprehension. However, many textbooks lack self-assessment questions because authoring them is timeconsuming and expensive. Automatic question generators may alleviate this scarcity by generating sound pedagogical questions. However, generating questions automatically poses linguistic and pedagogical challenges. What should we ask? And, how do we phrase the question automatically? We address those challenges wi…

Some exciting new approaches to neural architectures for the analysis of conversation have been introduced over the past couple of years. These include neural architectures for detecting emotion, dialogue acts, and sentiment polarity. They take advantage of some of the key attributes of contemporary machine learning, such as recurrent neural networks with attention mechanisms and transformer-based approaches. However, while the architectures themselves are extremely promising, the phenomena they have been applied to to date are but a small part of what makes conversation engaging. In this pape…

Automatic text generation has received much attention owing to rapid development of deep neural networks. In general, text generation systems based on statistical language model will not consider anthropomorphic characteristics, which results in machine-like generated texts. To fill the gap, we propose a conditional language generation model with Big Five Personality (BFP) feature vectors as input context, which writes human-like short texts. The short text generator consists of a layer of long short memory network (LSTM), where a BFP feature vector is concatenated as one part of input for eac…
Although Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems have achieved human-like performance for a few languages, the majority of the world's languages do not have usable systems due to the lack of large speech datasets to train these models. Cross-lingual transfer is an attractive solution to this problem, because low-resource languages can potentially benefit from higher-resource languages either through transfer learning, or being jointly trained in the same multilingual model. The problem of cross-lingual transfer has been well studied in ASR, however, recent advances in Self Supervised Learni…
