We fully explore the thermal freezeout histories of a vector-portal dark matter model, in the region of parameter space in which the ratio of masses of the dark photon $A^{\prime}$ and dark matter $χ$ is in the range $1 \lesssim m_{A^{\prime}}/m_χ \lesssim 2$. In this region $2 \rightarrow 2$ and $3 \rightarrow 2$ annihilation processes within the dark sector, as well as processes that transfer energy between the dark sector and the Standard Model, play important roles in controlling the thermal freezeout of the dark matter. We carefully track the temperatures of all species, relaxing the assumption of previous studies that the dark and Standard Model sectors remain in thermal equilibrium throughout dark matter freezeout. Our calculations reveal a rich set of novel pathways which lead to the observed relic density of dark matter, and we develop a simple analytic understanding of these different regimes. The viable parameter space in our model provides a target for future experiments searching for light (MeV-GeV) dark matter, and includes regions where the dark matter self-interaction cross section is large enough to affect the small-scale structure of galaxies.
We present a new mechanism to produce the dark photon ($γ'$) in the early universe with a help of the axion ($a$) using a recently proposed dark axion portal. The dark photon, a light gauge boson in the dark sector, can be a relic dark matter if its lifetime is long enough. The main process we consider is a variant of the Primakoff process $f a \to f γ'$ mediated by a photon, which is possible with the axion--photon--dark photon coupling. The axion is thermalized in the early universe because of the strong interaction and it can contribute to the non-thermal dark photon production through the …
Higgs portal models are the most minimal way to explain the relic abundance of the Universe. They add just a singlet that only couples to the Higgs through a single parameter that controls both the dark matter relic abundance and the direct detection cross-section. Unfortunately this scenario, either with scalar or fermionic dark matter, is almost ruled out by the latter. In this paper we analyze the Higgs-portal idea with fermionic dark matter in the context of a 2HDM. By disentangling the couplings responsible for the correct relic density from those that control the direct detection cross s…
We examine the vector-portal inelastic dark matter (DM) model with DM mass $m_χ$ and dark photon mass $m_{A'}$, in the `forbidden dark matter' regime where $1 \lesssim m_{A'}/m_χ\lesssim 2$, carefully tracking the dark sector temperature throughout freezeout. The inelastic nature of the dark sector relaxes the stringent cosmic microwave background (CMB) and self-interaction constraints compared to symmetric DM models. We determine the CMB limits on both annihilations involving excited states and annihilation into $e^+e^-$ through initial-state-radiation of an $A'$, as well as limits on the DM …
We show that the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole model in the hidden sector with Higgs portal interaction makes a viable dark matter model, where monopole and massive vector dark matter (VDM) are stable due to topological conservation and the unbroken subgroup $U(1)_X$. We show that, even though observed CMB data requires the dark gauge coupling to be quite small, a right amount of VDM thermal relic can be obtained via $s$-channel resonant annihilation for the mass of VDM close to or smaller than the half of SM higgs mass, thanks to Higgs portal interaction. Monopole relic density turns out to be s…
We consider the possibility that along the thermal history of the Universe, dark matter (DM) would have been created from Standard Model particles, either through a kinetic mixing portal to an extra U(1) gauge field, or through the Higgs portal. Depending solely on the DM particle mass, on the portal and on the DM hidden sector interaction, we show how the observed DM relic density can be obtained. There are four possible freeze-in/reannihilation/freeze-out regimes, which together result in a simple characteristic relic density phase diagram, with the shape of a "Mesa". In the case of the kine…
Dark matter could be a thermal relic comprised of strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs), where $3 \rightarrow 2$ interactions set the relic abundance. Such interactions generically arise in theories of chiral symmetry breaking via the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. In this work, we show that an axion-like particle can successfully maintain kinetic equilibrium between the dark matter and the visible sector, allowing the requisite entropy transfer that is crucial for SIMPs to be a cold dark matter candidate. Constraints on this scenario arise from beam dump and collider experiments, from the …
One loop correction to the dark matter (DM) annihilation cross section is usually assumed to be sub-dominate in calculating the DM relic density. In this paper, we propose a scenario where DM freezes out mainly via loops in the neutrino portal. For a scalar DM annihilating into neutrino via a triangle diagram, or a Majorana DM annihilating into neutrino via a box diagram, the observed DM relic density can be generated if the mediator is Majorana fermion. We further work out the neutrino Debye mass and neutrino oscillation probabilities in the dark halo. Numerical results show that impactions o…
We explore a simple extension to the Standard Model containing two gauge singlets: a Dirac fermion and a real pseudoscalar. In some regions of the parameter space both singlets are stable without the necessity of additional symmetries, then becoming a possible two-component dark matter model. We study the relic abundance production via freeze-out, with the latter determined by annihilations, conversions and semi-annihilations. Experimental constraints from invisible Higgs decay, dark matter relic abundance and direct/indirect detection are studied. We found three viable regions of the paramete…
We present a model of pseudo-Goldstone dark matter that interacts through a light vector mediator based on a spontaneously broken $SU(2)$ dark sector. The dark matter mass is induced by the explicit breaking of the dark $SU(2)$ symmetry. A residual global $U(1)$ symmetry prevents dark matter decay. The behavior of this model is studied under the assumption that the observed dark matter relic abundance is due to thermal freeze-out. We consider self-interaction targets for small scale structure anomalies and the possibility of interacting with the Standard model through the vector mediator.
We investigate a beyond standard model (SM) portal scenario for dark matter (DM) particle with leptoquark being the mediator field. Leptoquark, a colored particle having both baryon and lepton number, allows the DM to interact with the SM fields via renormalizable interaction. By focusing on a vector leptoquark portal with Majorana fermion DM candidate, we find the only unknown coupling in the model is sensitive to all three main features of a DM model namely, relic density, direct detection as well as indirect detection, while being consistent with collider data. We explore the parameter spac…
We explore the possibility that the discrepancy in the observed anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $Δa _μ$ and the predicted relic abundance of Dark Matter by Planck data, can be explained in a lepto-philic 2-HDM augmented by a real SM singlet scalar of mass $\sim$ 10-80 GeV. We constrain the model from the observed Higgs Decay width at LHC, LEP searches for low mass exotic scalars and anomalous magnetic moment of an electron $Δa_e$. This constrained light singlet scalar serves as a portal for the fermionic Dark Matter, which contributes to the required relic density of the universe. A larg…
We propose a self-interacting dark matter (DM) scenario with right handed neutrino (RHN) portal to the standard model (SM). The dark sector consists of a particle DM, assumed to be a Dirac fermion, and a light mediator in terms of a dark Abelian vector boson to give rise to the required velocity dependent self-interactions in agreement with astrophysical observations. Irrespective of thermal or non-thermal production of such a DM, its final relic remains under-abundant due to efficient annihilation rates of DM into light mediators by virtue of large self-interaction coupling. We then show that…
We examine the possibility that dark matter (DM) consists of a gapped continuum, rather than ordinary particles. A Weakly-Interacting Continuum (WIC) model, coupled to the Standard Model via a Z-portal, provides an explicit realization of this idea. The thermal DM relic density in this model is naturally consistent with observations, providing a continuum counterpart of the "WIMP miracle". Direct detection cross sections are strongly suppressed compared to ordinary Z-portal WIMP, thanks to a unique effect of the continuum kinematics. Continuum DM states decay throughout the history of the univ…
New Abelian U(1)' gauge bosons $V_μ$ can couple to the Standard Model through mixing of the associated field strength tensor $V_{μν}$ with the one from hypercharge, $F_{μν}^Y$. Here we consider early Universe sensitivity to this vector portal and show that the effective mixing parameter with the photon, $κ$, is being probed for vector masses in the GeV ballpark down to values $10^{-10} \lesssim κ\lesssim 10^{-14}$ where no terrestrial probes exist. The ensuing constraints are based on a detailed calculation of the vector relic abundance and an in-depth analysis of relevant nucleosynthesis proc…
We study self-interacting dark matter coupled to the Standard Model via the Higgs portal. We consider a scenario where dark matter is a thermal relic with strong enough self interactions that can alleviate the problems of collisionless cold dark matter. We study constraints from direct detection searches, the LHC, and Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We show that the tension between these constraints and the need for sufficiently strong self-interactions with light mediators can be alleviated by coupling the mediator to either active or sterile neutrinos. Future direct detection data offers great pot…
We study an extension of the Inert Higgs Doublet Model (IHDM) by three copies of right handed neutrinos and heavy charged leptons such that both the inert Higgs doublet and the heavy fermions are odd under the $Z_2$ symmetry of the model. The neutrino masses are generated at one loop in the scotogenic fashion. Assuming the neutral scalar of the inert Higgs to be the dark matter candidate, we particularly look into the region of parameter space where dark matter relic abundance is primarily governed by the inert Higgs coupling with the leptons. This corresponds to tiny Higgs portal coupling of …
We consider the possibility that the inflaton is part of the dark sector and interacts with the standard model through a portal interaction with a heavy complex scalar field in equilibrium with the standard model at high energies. The inflaton and dark matter are encapsulated in a single complex field and both scalar sectors are charged under different (approximate) global U(1)'s such that the dark matter, as well as the visible pseudo-scalar are taken to be relatively light, as pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of the theory. The dark matter relic density is populated by Freeze-In productions thr…
We propose a minimal seesaw extension to simultaneously account for realistic neutrino mass and mixing, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis and a viable dark matter relic density, in which two right-handed neutrinos are coupled to a dark Dirac fermion and complex scalar field, both charged under a global $U(1)_D$ symmetry. As a concrete example, we consider the Littlest Seesaw model which describes neutrino mass and mixing and accounts for leptogenesis, thereby fixing the neutrino Yukawa couplings and right-handed neutrino masses. By considering the freeze-in production mecha…
We propose a minimal model to simultaneously account for a realistic neutrino spectrum through a type-I seesaw mechanism and a viable dark matter relic density. The model is an extension of the Littlest Seesaw model in which the two right-handed neutrinos of the model are coupled to a $Z_2$-odd dark sector via right-handed neutrino portal couplings. In this model, a highly constrained and direct link between dark matter and neutrino physics is achieved by considering the freeze-in production mechanism of dark matter. We show that the neutrino Yukawa couplings which describe neutrino mass and m…
We study a multi-component dark matter model where interactions with the Standard Model are primarily via the Higgs boson. The model contains vector-like fermions charged under $SU(2)_W \times U(1)_Y$ and under the dark gauge group, $U(1)^\prime$. This results in two dark matter candidates. A spin-1 and a spin-1/2 candidate, which have loop and tree-level couplings to the Higgs, respectively. We explore the resulting effect on the dark matter relic abundance, while also evaluating constraints on the Higgs invisible width and from direct detection experiments. Generally, we find that this model…
We study the genesis of dark matter in the primordial Universe for representative classes of Z'-portals models. For weak-scale Z' mediators we compute the range of values of the kinetic mixing allowed by WMAP/PLANCK experiments corresponding to a FIMP regime. We show that very small values of the kinetic coupling (1.e-12 < delta < 1.e-11) are sufficient to produce the right amount of dark matter. We also analyse the case of very massive gauge mediators, whose mass is larger than the reheating temperature, "T_RH", with a weak-scale coupling to ordinary matter. Relic abundance constraints then i…
We study the recent $e^\pm$ cosmic ray excess reported by DAMPE in a Hidden Valley Model with lepton-portal dark matter. We find the electron-portal can account for the excess well and satisfy the DM relic density and direct detection bounds, while electron+muon/electron+muon+tau-portal suffers from strong constraints from lepton flavor violating observables, such as $μ\to 3 e$. We also discuss possible collider signatures of our model, both at the LHC and a future 100 TeV hadron collider.
Weak-scale secluded sector dark matter can reproduce the observed dark matter relic density with thermal freeze-out within that sector. If nature is supersymmetric, three portals to the visible sector - a gauge portal, a Higgs portal, and a gaugino portal - are present. We present gamma ray spectra relevant for indirect detection of dark matter annihilation in such setups. Since symmetries in the secluded sector can stabilize dark matter, $R$-parity is unnecessary, and we investigate the impact of $R$-parity violation on annihilation spectra. We present limits from the Fermi Large Area Telesco…
We consider fermionic (Dirac or Majorana) cold thermal relic dark-matter coupling to standard-model particles through the effective dimension-5 Higgs portal operators $Λ^{-1} \ \mathcal{O}_{\text{DM}} \cdot H^\dagger H$, where $\mathcal{O}_{\text{DM}}$ is an admixture of scalar $\barχχ$ and pseudoscalar $\barχiγ_5 χ$ DM operators. Utilizing the relic abundance requirement to fix the couplings, we consider direct detection and invisible Higgs width constraints, and map out the remaining allowed parameter space of dark-matter mass and the admixture of scalar and pseudoscalar couplings. We emphas…
A simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) that provides an explicit realization of the dark-matter (DM) neutrino-portal paradigm is presented. The leading interactions between the dark sector, containing scalars and relic fermions, and the SM involve neutrinos. This model meets all observational constraints.
The Higgs portal to scalar Dark Matter is considered in the context of non-linearly realised electroweak symmetry breaking. We determine the interactions of gauge bosons and the physical Higgs particle $h$ to a scalar singlet Dark Matter candidate $S$ in an effective description. The main phenomenological differences with respect to the standard scenario can be seen in the Dark Matter relic abundance, in direct/indirect searches and in signals at colliders.
Z' gauge bosons arise in many particle physics models as mediators between the dark and visible sectors. We exploit dark matter complementarity and derive stringent and robust collider, direct and indirect constraints, as well as limits from the muon magnetic moment. We rule out almost the entire region of the parameter space that yields the right dark matter thermal relic abundance, using a generic parametrization of the Z'-fermion couplings normalized to the Standard Model Z-fermion couplings for dark matter masses in the 8 GeV-5 TeV range. We conclude that mediators lighter than 2.1 TeV are…
We consider the thermal effects into the evaluation of the dark matter production process. With the assistance of the right handed neutrinos, the freeze-in massive particle dark matter production history can be modified by the two-step phase transitions. The kinematic of decay/inverse decay or annihilation processes can be affected by the finite temperature effects as the Universe cools down. The history of the symmetry respected by the model can be revealed by the DM relic abundance evolution processes. The strong first order electroweak phase transition generated gravitational waves can be p…
The freeze-out of massless particles is investigated. The effects due to quantum statistics, Fermi-Dirac or Bose-Einstein, of all particles relevant for the process are analyzed. Solutions of appropriate Boltzmann equation are compared with those obtained using some popular approximate methods. As an application of general results the relic density of dark radiation in Weinberg's Higgs portal model is discussed.
We discuss the phenomenology of an MeV-scale Dirac fermion coupled to the Standard Model through a dark photon with kinetic mixing with the electromagnetic field. We compute the dark matter relic density and explore the interplay of direct detection and accelerator searches for dark photons. We show that precise measurements of the temperature and polarization power spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation lead to stringent constraints, leaving a small window for the thermal production of this MeV dark matter candidate. The forthcoming MeV gamma-ray telescope e-ASTROGAM will offer …
We study a vector dark matter (VDM) model in which the dark sector couples to the Standard Model sector via a Higgs portal. If the portal coupling is small enough the VDM can be produced via the freeze-in mechanism. It turns out that the electroweak phase transition have a substantial impact on the prediction of the VDM relic density. We further assume that the dark Higgs boson which gives the VDM mass is so light that it can induce strong VDM self-interactions and solve the small-scale structure problems of the Universe. As illustrated by the latest LUX data, the extreme smallness of the Higg…
In this work, we investigate the possibility to realize inflation and strong first order electroweak phase transitions(SFOEWPT) together with the relic density explanation. We studied the usual Higgs-portal real singlet dark matter model and the global U(1) breaking complex singlet model with the pseudoscalar being dark matter candidate. We focus on higher dark matter parameter regions due to the lower dark matter masses region are almost excluded by the current direct detection experiments except that of the so-called ${\it Higgs~ funnel ~regime}$ with $m_{DM}\sim m_h/2$. In both models, the …
We analyze a low energy effective model of Dark Matter in which the thermal relic density is provided by a singlet Majorana fermion which interacts with the Higgs fields via higher dimensional operators. Direct detection signatures may be reduced if blind spot solutions exist, which naturally appear in models with extended Higgs sectors. Explicit mass terms for the Majorana fermion can be forbidden by a $Z_3$ symmetry, which in addition leads to a reduction of the number of higher dimensional operators. Moreover, a weak scale mass for the Majorana fermion is naturally obtained from the vacuum …
A fermion dark matter candidate with a relic abundance set by annihilation through a pseudoscalar can evade constraints from direct detection experiments. We present simplified models that realize this fact by coupling a fermion dark sector to a two-Higgs doublet model. These models are generalizations of mixed bino-Higgsino dark matter in the MSSM, with more freedom in the couplings and scalar spectra. Annihilation near a pseudoscalar resonance allows a significant amount of parameter space for thermal relic dark matter compared to singlet-doublet dark matter, in which the fermions couple onl…
We show that moduli fields as mediators between the Standard Model and the dark sector can naturally lead to the observed relic abundance. Indeed, even if moduli are very massive, the nature of their couplings with matter and gauge fields allows producing a sufficiently large amount of dark matter in the early Universe through the freeze-in mechanism. Moreover, the complex nature of the moduli fields whose real and imaginary part couple differently to the thermal bath gives an interesting and unusual phenomenology compared to other freeze-in models of that type.
Analyzing the neutrino Yukawa effect in the freeze-out process of a generic dark matter candidate with right-handed neutrino portal, we identify the parameter regions satisfying the observed dark matter relic density as well as the current Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. limits and the future CTA reach on gamma-ray signals. In this scenario the dark matter couples to the Higgs boson at one-loop level and thus could be detected by spin-independent nucleonic scattering for a reasonable range of the relevant parameters.
We explore an extension of the Standard Model by an additional U (1) gauge group and a complex scalar Higgs portal. As the scalar is charged under this gauge factor this simple model supplies a vector dark matter candidate satisfying the observed relic abundance and limits from direct dark matter searches. An additional Higgs-like state, that may be heavier or lighter than the observed Higgs, is present and satisfies LEP and LHC bounds whilst allowing for absolute stability of the electroweak vacuum in a range of parameter space.
We consider a Dirac singlet fermion as thermal dark matter for explaining the X-ray line in the context of a supersymmetric Higgs-portal model or a generalized Dirac NMSSM. The Dirac singlet fermion gets a mass splitting due to their Yukawa couplings to two Higgs doublets and their superpartners, Higgsinos, after electroweak symmetry breaking. We show that a correct relic density can be obtained from thermal freeze-out, due to the co-annihilation with Higgsinos for the same Yukawa couplings. We discuss the phenomenology of the Higgsinos in this model such as displaced vertices at the LHC.
We explore the neutrino portal dark matter (DM) at its minimum of field content having two dark sector particles coupled to a right-handed neutrino. Assuming the feeble nature of their interactions with the standard model (SM) particles, we analyze the freeze-in production of the observed DM relic density characterized by three different categories depending on the major production mechanisms. The portal provides interesting signatures at the neutrino detectors like KamLAND, Super-Kamiokande and IceCube, from a very late decay of the scalar DM to the fermion DM and the SM neutrino. Such neutri…
We explore the possibility that the dark-matter relic abundance is generated in a context where the inflaton is the only mediator between the visible and the hidden sectors of our universe. Due to the relatively large mass of the inflaton field, such a portal leads to an extremely feeble interaction between the dark and the visible sectors suggesting that the dark sector cannot reach any thermal equilibrium with the visible sector. After the two sectors are populated by the decay of the inflaton, a heavy dark-matter particle thermally decouples within the dark sector. Later, a lighter dark par…
The WIMPzilla hypothesis is that the dark matter is a super-weakly-interacting and super-heavy particle. Conventionally, the WIMPzilla abundance is set by gravitational particle production during or at the end of inflation. In this study we allow the WIMPzilla to interact directly with Standard Model fields through the Higgs portal, and we calculate the thermal production (freeze-in) of WIMPzilla dark matter from the annihilation of Higgs boson pairs in the plasma. The two particle-physics model parameters are the WIMPzilla mass and the Higgs-WIMPzilla coupling. The two cosmological parameters…
The Higgs-portal model with a singlet scalar Dark Matter particle is one of the simplest extensions to the Standard Model that can reproduce the relic density. Unfortunately this model is strongly constrained by direct and indirect DM detection, as well as by collider physics. Most of the parameter space is already ruled-out and the rest will be explored in the next future. We show that a simple extension of the DM sector with a second scalar singlet enables a substantial opening of the allowed window in the parameter space.
The out-of-equilibrium production of dark matter (DM) from standard model (SM) species in the early universe (freeze-in mechanism) is expected in many scenarios in which very heavy beyond the SM fields act as mediators. In this conference, I have talked about the freeze-in of scalar, fermionic and vector DM though the exchange of moduli fields \cite{chowdhury_moduli_2019}, which are in the low-energy spectrum of many extra-dimensions and string theory frameworks. We have shown that the high-temperature dependencies of the production rate densities in this model, as well as the possibility of h…
We examine a model with a fermionic dark matter candidate having pseudoscalar interaction with the standard model particles where its direct detection elastic scattering cross section at tree level is highly suppressed. We then calculate analytically the leading loop contribution to the spin independent scattering cross section. It turns out that these loop effects are sizable over a large region of the parameter space. Taking constraints from direct detection experiments, the invisible Higgs decay measurements, observed DM relic density, we find viable regions which are within reach in the fu…
