Spins of relativistic fermions are related to their orbital degrees of freedom. In order to quantify the effect of hybridization between relativistic and nonrelativistic degrees of freedom on spin-orbit coupling, we focus on the spin-orbital (SO) crossed susceptibility arising from spin-orbit coupling. The SO crossed susceptibility is defined as the response function of their spin polarization to the "orbital" magnetic field, namely the effect of magnetic field on the orbital motion of particles as the vector potential. Once relativistic and nonrelativistic fermions are hybridized, their SO crossed susceptibility gets modified at the Fermi energy around the band hybridization point, leading to spin polarization of nonrelativistic fermions as well. These effects are enhanced under a dynamical magnetic field that violates thermal equilibrium, arising from the interband process permitted by the band hybridization. Its experimental realization is discussed for Dirac electrons in solids with slight breaking of crystalline symmetry or doping, and also for quark matter including dilute heavy quarks strongly hybridized with light quarks, arising in a relativistic heavy-ion collision process.
We theoretically and numerically show that longitudinal orbital currents in ferromagnets depend on the magnetization direction, which contribute to the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR). This orbital contribution to AMR arises from the momentum-dependent orbital splitting, which is generally present in multi-orbital systems through the orbital anisotropy and the orbital hybridization. We highlight the latter orbital hybridization as an unrecognized origin of AMR and also as a common origin of AMR and orbital Hall effect.
In a magnetic multilayer, the spin transfer between localized magnetization dynamics and itinerant conduction spin arises from the interaction between a normal metal and an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. The spin-mixing conductance then governs the spin-transfer torques and spin pumping at the magnetic interface. Theoretical description of spin-mixing conductance at the magnetic interface often employs a single conduction-band model. However, there is orbital hybridization between conduction $s$ electron and localized $d$ electron of the heavy transition metal, in which the single conduction-ba…

We have investigated the structural and electronic properties of phosphorescent planar platinum(II) complexes at the interface of Au(111) with submolecular resolution using combined scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy as well as density functional theory. Our analysis shows that molecule-substrate coupling and lateral intermolecular interactions are weak. While the ligand orbitals remain essentially unchanged upon contact to the substrate, we found modified electronic behavior at the Pt atom due to local hybridization and charge transfer to the substrate. Thus, this novel class of p…
Understanding the intermolecular interactions and utilize these interactions to effectively control the transport behavior of single molecule is the key step from single molecule device to molecular circuits1-6. Although many single molecule detection techniques are used to detect the molecular interaction at single-molecule level1,4,5,7,8, probing and tuning the intermolecular interaction all by electrical approaches has not been demonstrated. In this work, we successful assemble a double molecule transistor incorporating two manganese phthalocyanine molecules, on which we probe and tune the …
Higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) have attracted much attention in photonics due to the tightly localized disorder-robust corner and hinge states. Here, we reveal an unconventional HOTI phase with vanishing dipole and quadrupole polarizations. This phase arises in the array of evanescently coupled waveguides hosting degenerate $s$- and $d$-type orbital modes arranged in a square lattice with four waveguides in the unit cell. As we prove, the degeneracy of the modes with the different symmetry gives rise to the nontrivial topological properties rendering the system equivalent to the t…
In recent years, various doping methods for epitaxial graphene have been demonstrated through atom substitution and adsorption. Here we observe by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) a coupling-induced Dirac cone renormalization when depositing small amounts of Ti onto epitaxial graphene on SiC. We obtain a remarkably high doping efficiency and a readily tunable carrier velocity simply by changing the amount of deposited Ti. First-principles theoretical calculations show that a strong lateral (non-vertical) orbital coupling leads to an efficient doping of graphene by hybridizing …
Magnetic adsorbates on superconductors induce local bound states within the superconducting gap. These Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (\YSR) states decay slowly away from the impurity compared to atomic orbitals, even in 3d bulk crystals. Here, we use scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate their hybridization between two nearby magnetic Mn adatoms on a superconducting Pb(001) surface. We observe that the hybridization leads to the formation of symmetric and antisymmetric combinations of \YSR states. We investigate how the structure of the dimer wave functions and the energy splitting depend on the s…

Many interesting spin and orbital transport phenomena originate from orbital textures, referring to $\vec{k}$-dependent orbital states. Most of previous works are based on symmetry analysis to model the orbital texture and analyze its consequences. However the microscopic origins of orbital texture and its strength are largely unexplored. In this work, we derive the orbital texture Hamiltonians from microscopic tight-binding models for various situations. To form an orbital texture, $\vec{k}$-dependent hybridization of orbital states are necessary. We reveal two microscopic mechanisms for the …
Hydrogen adatoms on graphene are investigated using DFT and analytical approaches. We demonstrate that the level of lattice deformation due to the hydrogen adsorption does not substantially change the coupling between the graphene $p_{z}$ orbitals. The hybridization primarily takes place between the adsorbate's s orbital and the graphene $p_{z}$ orbitals. We also show that the impurity interaction with the graphene atoms is limited to only a few nearest neighbors, allowing us to construct a compact TB model for the impurity-graphene system with an arbitrary impurity distribution. The complexit…
Using density functional theory combined with orbital-selective band unfolding techniques, we study the effective band structure of silicene($3\times3$)/Ag(111)($4\times4$) structure. Consistent with the ARPES spectra recently obtained by Feng et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 113, 14656 (2016)], we observe six pairs of Dirac cones near the boundary of the Brillouin zone (BZ) of Ag($1\times1$), while no Dirac cone is observed inside the BZ. Furthermore, we find that these Dirac cones are induced by the interfacial Si-Ag hybridization, mainly composed of Si p$_z$ orbitals and Ag sp bands, which is…
Spin-orbit torques due to interfacial Rashba and spin Hall effects have been widely considered as a potentially more efficient approach than the conventional spin-transfer torque to control the magnetization of ferromagnets. We report a comprehensive study of spin-orbit torque efficiency in Ta(O)/Ni81Fe19 bilayers by tuning low-oxidation of \b{eta}-phase tantalum, and find that the spin Hall angle θDL increases from ~ -0.18 of the pure Ta/Py to the maximum value ~ -0.30 of Ta(O)/Py with 7.8% oxidation. Furthermore, we distinguish the efficiency of the spin-orbit torque generated by the bulk sp…
The electronic structure of monolayer hexagonal boron nitride grown on Ni by the diffusion and precipitation method was studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and micro-ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy. No indication of hybridization between h-BN pi and Ni 3d orbitals was observed. That is, the monolayer h-BN was found to be in the quasi-free-standing state. These results are in striking contrast to those of previous studies in which h-BN was strongly bound to the Ni surface by the orbital hybridization. The absence of hybridizat…
Control and manipulation of electric current and, especially, its degree of spin polarization (spin filtering) across single molecules are currently of great interest in the field of molecular spintronics. We explore one possible strategy based on the modification of nanojunction symmetry which can be realized, for example, by a mechanical strain. Such modification can activate new molecular orbitals which were inactive before due to their orbital mismatch with the electrode's conduction states. This can result in several important consequences such as (i) quantum interference effects appearin…
Supercurrent transport is experimentally studied in a Josephson junction hosting a double quantum dot (DQD) with tunable symmetries. The QDs are parallel-coupled to two superconducting contacts and can be tuned between strong inter-dot hybridization and a ring geometry where hybridization is suppressed. In both cases, we observe supercurrents when the two interacting orbitals are either empty or filled with spins, or a combination. However, when each QD hosts an unpaired spin, the supercurrent depends on the spin ground state. It is strongly suppressed for the ring geometry with a spin-triplet…
Layer stacking and crystal lattice symmetry play important roles in the band structure and the Landau levels of multilayer graphene. ABA-stacked trilayer graphene possesses mirror-symmetry-protected monolayer-like and bilayer-like band structures. Broken mirror symmetry by a perpendicular electric field therefore induces hybridization between these bands and various quantum Hall phases emerge. We experimentally explore the evolution of Landau levels in ABA-stacked trilayer graphene under electric field. We observe a variety of valley and orbital dependent Landau level evolutions. These evoluti…
The curvature effects in carbon nanotubes are studied analytically as a function of chirality. The pi-orbitals are found to be significantly rehybridized in all tubes, so that they are never normal to the tubes' surface. This results in a curvature induced gap in the electronic band-structure, which turns out to be larger than previous estimates. The tilting of the pi-orbitals should be observable by atomic resolution scanning tunneling microscopy measurements.

Metalated phthalocyanines (Pc's) are robust and versatile molecular complexes, whose properties can be tuned by changing their functional groups and central metal atom. The electronic structure of magnesium Pc (MgPc) - structurally and electronically similar to chlorophyll - adsorbed on the Ag(100) surface is investigated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), non-contact atomic force microscopy (ncAFM) and density functional theory (DFT). Single, isolated MgPc's exhibit a flat, four-fold rotationally symmetric morphology, with doubly degenerate, partial…
We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in 3D Dirac semimetals. Using retarded Green's functions in real space, we obtain and analyze asymptotic expressions for the interaction, with magnetic impurities at different distances and relative angle with respect to high symmetry directions on the lattice. We show that the Fermi velocity anisotropy in these materials produces a strong renormalization of the magnitude of the interaction, as well as a correction to the frequency of oscillation in real space. Hybridization of the impurities to different conduction electron orbitals are s…
Two-dimensional layered transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials often exhibit exotic quantum matter phases due to the delicate coupling and competitions between the charge, lattice, orbital, and spin degrees of freedom. Surprisingly, we here present, based on first-principles density-functional theory calculations, the incorporation of all such degrees of freedom in a charge density wave (CDW) of monolayer (ML) TMDC 1$T$-TaS$_2$. We reveal that the CDW formed via the electron-phonon coupling is significantly stabilized by the orbital hybridization. The resulting lattice distortion to …
Recently observed tunneling spectra on clean heavy fermion compounds show a lattice periodic Fano lineshape similar to what is observed in the case of tunneling to a Kondo ion adsorbed at the surface. We show that the translation symmetry of a clean surface in the case of \emph{weakly correlated} metals leads to a tunneling spectrum given by the superposition of the local weighted density of states of all energy bands involved, which does not have a Fano lineshape. In particular the spectrum will show any hybridization gap present in the band structure. By contrast, in a \emph{strongly correla…
