Atomically thin materials such as graphene and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted extensive interest in recent years, motivating investigation into multiple properties. In this work, we used the opto thermal Raman technique to measure the thermal transport properties of a popular TMDC material WSe$_2$, in single atomic layer, bilayer, and trilayer forms.
Atomically thin layered van der Waals heterostructures feature exotic and emergent optoelectronic properties. With growing interest in these novel quantum materials, the microscopic understanding of fundamental interfacial coupling mechanisms is of capital importance. Here, using multidimensional photoemission spectroscopy, we provide a layer- and momentum-resolved view on ultrafast interlayer electron and energy transfer in a monolayer-WSe$_2$/graphene heterostructure. Depending on the nature of the optically prepared state, we find the different dominating transfer mechanisms: while electron…

As the energy problem becomes more prominent, researches on thermoelectric (TE) materials have deepened over the past few decades. Low thermal conductivity enables thermoelectric materials better thermal conversion performance. In this study, based on the first principles and phonon Boltzmann transport equation, we studied the thermal conductivities of single-layer WSe2 under several defect conditions using density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP). The lattice thermal conductivities of WSe2 under six kinds of defect states, i.e., PS, SS-c…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising materials for efficient generation of current-induced spin-orbit torques on an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. Numerous effects, both interfacial and bulk, have been put forward to explain the different torques previously observed. Thus far, however, there is no clear consensus on the microscopic origin underlying the spin-orbit torques observed in these TMD/ferromagnet bilayers. To shine light on the microscopic mechanisms at play, here we perform thickness dependent spin-orbit torque measurements on the semiconducting WSe$_{2}$/permalloy bi…
We report a first-principle theoretical study of a monolayer-thick lateral heterostructure (LH) joining two different transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC): NbS2 and WSe2. The NbS2//WSe2 LH can be considered a prototypical example of a conducting(NbS2)/semiconducting(WSe2) two-dimensional (2D) hybrid heterojunction. We first generate and validate realistic atomistic models of the NbS2//WSe2 LH, derive their band structure and subject it to a fragment decomposition and electrostatic potential analysis to extract a simple but quantitative model of this interfacial system. Stoichiometric fluctu…
Presented study concerns the possibility of evaluation of interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) between the constituents in composite materials with the use of flash technique. Two variants of such measurement are considered, the first of which is the measurement of ITR between two bonded layers of different materials which had been studied before by various researchers. The second tested measurement method is targeted at determination of ITR in particulate composites with low and moderate filler content based on their effective thermal conductivity. Method of such measurement is proposed and t…
We obtained the analytical expression for the effective thermoelectric properties and dimensionless figure of merit of a composite with interfacial electrical and thermal resistances using a micromechanics-based homogenisation. For the first time, we derived the Eshelby tensor for a spherical inclusion as a function of the interfacial resistances and obtained the solutions of the effective Seebeck coefficient and the electrical and thermal conductivities of a composite, which were validated against finite-element analysis (FEA). Our analytical predictions well match the effective properties ob…
Atomically thin materials such as graphene and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted extensive interest in recent years, motivating investigation into multiple properties. In this work, we demonstrate a refined version of the optothermal Raman technique to measure the thermal transport properties of two TMDC materials, MoS2 and MoSe2, in single-layer (1L) and bi-layer (2L) forms. This new version incorporates two crucial improvements over previous implementations. First, we utilize more direct measurements of the optical absorption of the suspended samples unde…
We present a study on the modification of the electronic structure and hole-doping effect for the layered dichalcogenide WSe_2 with a multi-valley band structure, where Ta is doped on the W site along with a partial substitution of Te for its lighter counterpart Se. By means of band-structure calculations and specific-heat measurements, the introduction of Te is theoretically and experimentally found to change the electronic states in WSe_2. While in WSe_2 the valence-band maximum is located at the Gamma point, the introduction of Te raises the bands at the K point with respect to the Gamma po…
Recent studies showed that the in-plane and inter-plane thermal conductivities of two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 are low, posing a significant challenge in heat management in MoS2-based electronic devices. To address this challenge, we design the interfaces between MoS2 and graphene by fully utilizing graphene, a 2D material with an ultra-high thermal conduction. We first perform ab initio atomistic simulations to understand the bonding nature and structure stability of the interfaces. Our results show that the designed interfaces, which are found to be connected together by strong covalent bonds b…
Engineering thermal transport in two dimensional materials, alloys and heterostructures is critical for the design of next-generation flexible optoelectronic and energy harvesting devices. Direct experimental characterization of lattice thermal conductivity in these ultra-thin systems is challenging and the impact of dopant atoms and hetero-phase interfaces, introduced unintentionally during synthesis or as part of deliberate material design, on thermal transport properties is not understood. Here, we use non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations to calculate lattice thermal conductivity …
Van der Waals (vdW) materials have greatly expanded our design space of heterostructures by allowing individual layers to be stacked at non-equilibrium configurations, for example via control of the twist angle. Such heterostructures not only combine characteristics of the individual building blocks, but can also exhibit emergent physical properties absent in the parent compounds through interlayer interactions. Here we report on a new family of emergent, nanometer-thick, semiconductor 2D ferroelectrics, where the individual constituents are well-studied non-ferroelectric monolayer transition …
Ferroelectricity in atomically thin bilayer structures has been recently predicted1 and measured[2-4] in two-dimensional (2D) materials with hexagonal non-centrosymmetric unit-cells. Interestingly, the crystal symmetry translates lateral shifts between parallel 2D layers to a change of sign in their out-of-plane electric polarization, a mechanism referred to as "Slide-Tronics"[4]. These observations, however, have been restricted to switching between only two polarization states under low charge carrier densities[5-12], strongly limiting the practical application of the revealed phenomena[13].…
Among the interfacial transport modulations to the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterostructure, mechanical strain has been proven to be an effective approach by growing the LAO/STO films on different substrates with varying lattice mismatches to STO. However, this lattice-mismatch-induced strain effect is static and biaxial, hindering the study of the strain effect in a dynamic way. In this work we realize dynamic and uniaxial strain to the LAO/STO oxide heterostructure at low temperature, through mechanical coupling from a magnetostrictive template. This anisotropic strain results in symmetry bre…

Despite its extremely weak intrinsic spin-orbit coupling (SOC), graphene has been shown to acquire considerable SOC by proximity coupling with exfoliated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here we demonstrate strong induced Rashba SOC in graphene that is proximity coupled to a monolayer TMD film, MoS2 or WSe2, grown by chemical vapor deposition with drastically different Fermi level positions. Graphene/TMD heterostructures are fabricated with a pickup-transfer technique utilizing hexagonal boron nitride, which serves as a flat template to promote intimate contact and therefore a strong i…
Electrically interfacing atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors (TMDSCs) with metal leads is challenging because of undesired interface barriers, which have drastically constrained the electrical performance of TMDSC devices for exploring their unconventional physical properties and realizing potential electronic applications. Here we demonstrate a strategy to achieve nearly barrier-free electrical contacts with few-layer TMDSCs by engineering interfacial bonding distortion. The carrier-injection efficiency of such electrical junction is substantially increased with rob…
UO2/BeO interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) is calculated by diffuse mismatch model (DMM) and the effects of ITR on UO2-BeO thermal conductivity are investigated. ITR predicted by DMM is on the order of 10-9 m2K/W. Using this ITR, UO2-BeO thermal conductivities are calculated by theoretical models and compared with experimental data. The results indicate that DMM prediction is applicable to the interface between UO2 and dispersed BeO, while not applicable to the interface between UO2 and continuous BeO. If the thermal conductivity of UO2 containing continuous BeO was to be in agreement with e…
