The asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) exhibits level crossings in the eigenspectrum for the values $ε\in\frac{1}{2}\mathbb{Z}$ of the bias parameter $ε$. Such level crossings are expected to be associated with some hidden symmetry of the model. The origin of this hidden symmetry is established by finding the operators which commute with the AQRM hamiltonian at these special values. The construction is given explicitly for the first several cases and can be applied to other related light-matter interaction models for which similar level crossings have been observed in the presence of a bias term.
It is shown that the (driven) quantum Rabi model and its 2-photon and 2-mode generalizations possess a hidden $sl(2)$-algebraic structure which explains the origin of the quasi-exact solvability of these models. It manifests the first appearance of a hidden algebraic structure in quantum spin-boson systems without $U(1)$ symmetry.
Starting with the Gaudin-like Bethe ansatz equations associated with the quasi-exactly solved (QES) exceptional points of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) a spectral equivalence is established with QES hyperbolic Schrödinger potentials on the line. This leads to particular QES Pöschl-Teller potentials. The complete spectral equivalence is then established between the AQRM and generalised Pöschl-Teller potentials. This result extends a previous mapping between the symmetric quantum Rabi model and a QES Pöschl-Teller potential. The complete spectral equivalence between the two systems su…
The aim of this paper is a better understanding for the eigenstates of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model by Lie algebra representations of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. We define a second order element of the universal enveloping algebra $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R})$, which, through the action of a certain infinite dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{R})$, provides a picture of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model equivalent to the one drawn by confluent Heun ordinary differential equations. Using this description, we prove the existence of level crossing…
The hidden $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) has recently been revealed via a systematic construction of the underlying symmetry operator. Based on the AQRM result, we propose an ansatz for the general form of the symmetry operators for AQRM-related models. Applying this ansatz we obtain the symmetry operator for three models: the anisotropic AQRM, the asymmetric Rabi-Stark model (ARSM) and the anisotropic ARSM.
The true level crossings in a subspace of the asymmetric two-photon quantum Rabi model (tpQRM) have been observed when the bias parameter of qubit is an even multiple of the renormalized cavity frequency. Generally, such level crossings imply the existence of the hidden symmetry because the bias term breaks the obvious symmetry exactly. In this work, we propose a Bogoliubov operator approach (BOA) for the asymmetric tpQRM to derive the symmetry operators associated with the hidden symmetry hierarchically. The explicit symmetry operators consisting of Lie algebra at low biases can be easily obt…
The purpose of this paper is to study the exceptional eigenvalues of the asymmetric quantum Rabi models (AQRM), specifically, to determine the degeneracy of their eigenstates. Here, the Hamiltonian $H^ε_{\text{Rabi}}$ of the AQRM is defined by adding the fluctuation term $εσ_x$, with $σ_x$ being the Pauli matrix, to the Hamiltonian of the quantum Rabi model, breaking its $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetry. The spectrum of $H^ε_{\text{Rabi}}$ contains a set of exceptional eigenvalues, considered to be remains of the eigenvalues of the uncoupled bosonic mode, which are further classified in two types: Ju…
We study the ground states of the single- and two-qubit asymmetric Rabi models, in which the qubit-oscillator coupling strengths for the counterrotating-wave and corotating-wave interactions are unequal. We take the transformation method to obtain the approximately analytical ground states for both models and numerically verify its validity for a wide range of parameters under the near-resonance condition. We find that the ground-state energy in either the single- or two-qubit asymmetric Rabi model has an approximately quadratic dependence on the coupling strengths stemming from different cont…
The asymmetric quantum Rabi model with broken parity invariance shows spectral degeneracies in the integer case, that is when the asymmetry parameter equals an integer multiple of half the oscillator frequency, thus hinting at a hidden symmetry and accompanying integrability of the model. We study the expectation values of spin observables for each eigenstate and observe characteristic differences between the integer and noninteger cases for the asymptotics in the deep strong coupling regime, which can be understood from a perturbative expansion in the qubit splitting. We also construct a pare…
The asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) has a broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, with generally a non-degenerate eigenvalue spectrum. In some special cases where the asymmetric parameter is a multiple of the cavity frequency, stable level crossings typical of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric quantum Rabi model are recovered, however, without any obvious parity-like symmetry. This unknown "symmetry" has thus been referred to as hidden symmetry in the literature. Here we show that this hidden symmetry is not limited to the AQRM, but exists in various related light-matter interaction models with an asy…
The true level crossing in the asymmetric quantum Rabi model without any obvious symmetry can be exhibited in the energy spectrum if the qubit bias is a multiple of the cavity frequency, which should imply the existence of the hidden symmetry. In this work, within a Bogoliubov operator approach, we can readily derive the symmetry operators associated with the hidden symmetry hierarchically for arbitrary multiples. The symmetry operators for small multiples in the literature can be extremely easily reproduced in our general scheme. In addition, a general parity operator is defined through the s…
In this paper, we uncover the elusive level crossings in a subspace of the asymmetric two-photon quantum Rabi model (tpQRM) when the bias parameter of qubit is an even multiple of the renormalized cavity frequency. Due to the absence of any explicit symmetry in the subspace, this double degeneracy implies the existence of the hidden symmetry. The non-degenerate exceptional points are also given completely. It is found that the number of the doubly degenerate crossing points in the asymmetric tpQRM is comparable to that in asymmetric one-photon QRM in terms of the same order of the constrained …
The hidden symmetry of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) with a half-integral bias (ibQRM$_{\ell}$) was uncovered in recent studies by the explicit construction of operators $J_\ell$ commuting with the Hamiltonian. The existence of such symmetry has been widely believed to cause the degeneration of the spectrum, that is, the crossings on the energy curves. In this paper we propose a conjectural relation between the symmetry and degeneracy for the ibQRM$_{\ell}$ given explicitly in terms of two polynomials appearing independently in the respective investigations. Concretely, one of the p…
It has been observed that the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (QRM), which does not possess any obvious symmetry, exhibits energy level crossings, which are often associated with symmetries. This observation suggests that there is in fact a symmetry in the asymmetric QRM, even though simple inspection of the model and its Hamiltonian does not reveal the nature of this symmetry. Here we present the results of numerical calculations on the energy eigenstates of the asymmetric QRM in an attempt to elucidate the nature of the symmetry. In particular, we note that the distribution of states in the Hi…
We present a physically motivated variational wave function for the ground state of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM). The wave function is a weighted superposition of squeezed coherent states entangled with non-orthogonal qubit states, and relies only on three variational parameters in the regimes of interest where the squeezing effect becomes negligible. The variational expansion describes the ground state remarkably well in almost all parameter regimes, especially with arbitrary bias. We use the variational result to calculate various relevant physical observables of the ground state…
We investigate the entanglement features in the interacting system of a quantized optical field and a two-level system which is statically driven, known as the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AsymQRM). Intriguing entanglement resonance valleys with the increase of the photon-atom coupling strength and peaks with the increase of the driving amplitude are found. It is revealed that both of these two kinds of entanglement resonance are caused by the avoided level crossing of the associated eigenenergies. In sharp contrast to the quantum Rabi model, the entanglement of the AsymQRM collapses to zero…
We investigate the existence of the $macroscopic$ $quantum$ $phase$ in trapped ultracold quantum degenerate gases, such as Bose-Einstein condensate, in an asymmetrical two-dimensional magnetic lattice. We show the key to adiabatically control the tunneling in the new two-dimensional magnetic lattice by means of external magnetic bias fields. The macroscopic quantum phase signature is identified as a Rabi-like oscillation when solving the system of coupled time-dependent differential equations, described here by the Boson Josephson Junctions (BJJs). In solving the system of the BJJs we used an …
We show that it is possible to realize quantum superpositions of switched-on and -off strong light-matter interaction in a single quantum dot- semiconductor microcavity system. Such superpositions enable the observation of counterintuitive quantum conditional dynamics effects. Situations are possible where cavity photons as well as the emitter luminescence display exponential decay but their joint detection probability exhibits vacuum Rabi oscillations. Remarkably, these quantum correlations are also present in the nonequilibrium steady state spectra of such coherently driven dissipative quant…
The asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM), which describes the interaction between a quantum harmonic oscillator and a biased qubit, arises naturally in circuit quantum electrodynamic circuits and devices. The existence of hidden symmetry in the AQRM leads to a rich energy landscape of conical intersections (CIs) and thus to interesting topological properties. However, current approximations to the AQRM fail to reproduce these CIs correctly. To overcome these limitations we propose a generalized adiabatic approximation (GAA) to describe the energy spectrum of the AQRM. This is achieved by combi…
The Rabi model describes the simplest interaction between a cavity mode with a frequency $ω_c$ and a two-level system with a resonance frequency $ω_0$. It is shown here that the spectrum of the Rabi model coincides with the support of the discrete Stieltjes integral measure in the orthogonality relations of recently introduced orthogonal polynomials. The exactly solvable limit of the Rabi model corresponding to $Δ=ω_0/(2ω_c)=0$, which describes a displaced harmonic oscillator, is characterized by the discrete Charlier polynomials in normalized energy $\upepsilon$, which are orthogonal on an eq…
An infinite family of exact solutions of the two-photon Rabi model was found by investigating the differential algebraic properties of the Hamiltonian. This family corresponds to energy level crossings not covered by the Juddian class, which is given by elemetary functions. In contrast, the new states are expressible in terms of parabolic cylinder or Bessel functions. We discuss three approaches for discovering this hidden structure: factorization of differential equations, Kimura transformation, and a doubly-infinite, transcendental basis of the Bargmann space.
The concept of the polaron in condensed matter physics has been extended to the Rabi model, where polarons resulting from the coupling between a two-level system and single-mode photons represent two oppositely displaced oscillators. Interestingly, tunneling between these two displaced oscillators can induce an anti-polaron, which has not been systematically explored in the literature, especially in the presence of an asymmetric term. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of the competition between the polaron and anti-polaron under the interplay of the coupling strength and the asym…
It is recognised that, apart from the total energy conservation, there is a nonlocal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and a somewhat hidden symmetry in this model. Conditions for the existence of this observable, its form, and its explicit construction are presented.

We report the observation of the vacuum Rabi splitting of a single quantum emitter by measuring its direct spontaneous emission into free space. We used a semiconductor quantum dot inside a photonic crystal nanocavity, in conjunction with an appropriate cavity design and filtering with a polarizer and an aperture, enabling the extraction of the inherently-weak emitter's signal. The emitter's vacuum Rabi spectra exhibit clear differences to those measured by detecting the cavity photon leakage. Moreover, we observed an asymmetric vacuum Rabi spectrum induced by interference between the emitter …
The extended quantum Rabi models make a significant contribution to understand the quantum nature of the atom-light interaction. We transform two kinds of extended quantum Rabi model, anisotropic Rabi model and asymmetric Rabi model, into rotating frame, and regard them as periodically driven quantum systems. The analytical solutions of the quasi-energy spectrum as well as the Floquet modes for both models are constructed by applying the Floquet theory and the high-frequency expansion, which is applied to the non-stroboscopic dynamics of physical observables such as atomic inversion, transvers…
In this work, the anisotropic variant of the quantum Rabi model with different coupling strengths of the rotating and counter-rotating wave terms is studied by the Bogoliubov operator approach. The anisotropy preserves the parity symmetry of the original model. We derive the corresponding $G$-function, which yields both the regular and exceptional eigenvalues. The exceptional eigenvalues correspond to the crossing points of two energy levels with different parities and are doubly degenerate. We find analytically that the ground-state and the first excited state can cross several times, indicat…
We develop a method to find analytical solutions for the eigenstates of the quantum Rabi model. These include symmetric, anti-symmetric and asymmetric analytic solutions given in terms of the confluent Heun functions. Both regular and exceptional solutions are given in a unified form. In addition, the analytic conditions for determining the energy spectrum are obtained. Our results show that conditions proposed by Braak [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{107}, 100401 (2011)] are a type of sufficiency condition for determining the regular solutions. The well-known Judd isolated exact solutions appear na…
Aubry-Andre Harper (AAH) lattice models, characterized by reflection-asymmetric, sinusoidally varying nearest-neighbor tunneling profile, are well-known for their topological properties. We consider the fate of such models in the presence of balanced gain and loss potentials $\pm iγ$ located at reflection-symmetric sites. We predict that these models have a finite $\mathcal{PT}$ breaking threshold only for {\it specific locations} of the gain-loss potential, and uncover a hidden symmetry that is instrumental to the finite threshold strength. We also show that the topological edge-states remain…
We present a stability analysis of an interacting two-species Bose-Einstein condensate driven by a quantized field in the semi-classical limit. Transitions from Rabi to Josephson dynamics are identified depending on both the inter-atomic interaction to field-condensate coupling ratio and the ratio between the total excitation number and the condensate size. The quantized field is found to produce asymmetric dynamics for symmetric initial conditions for both Rabi and Josephson oscillations.
The symmetry operators generating the hidden $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) at bias $ε\in \frac{1}{2}\mathbb{Z}$ have recently been constructed by V. V. Mangazeev et al. [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 54 12LT01 (2021)]. We start with this result to determine symmetry operators for the $N$-qubit generalisation of the AQRM, also known as the biased Dicke model, at special biases. We also prove for general $N$ that the symmetry operators, which commute with the Hamiltonian of the biased Dicke model, generate a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry.
The Rabi model plays a fundamental role in understanding light-matter interaction. It reduces to the Jaynes-Cummings model via the rotating-wave approximation, which is applicable only to the cases of near resonance and weak coupling. However, recent experimental breakthroughs in upgrading light-matter coupling order require understanding the physics of the full quantum Rabi model (QRM). Despite the fact that its integrability and energy spectra have been exactly obtained, the challenge to formulate an exact wavefunction in a general case still hinders physical exploration of the QRM. Here we …
The quantum Rabi model is a widespread description for the coupling between a two-level system and a quantized single mode of an electromagnetic resonator. Issues about this model's gauge invariance have been raised. These issues become evident when the light-matter interaction reaches the so-called ultrastrong coupling regime. Recently, a modified quantum Rabi model able to provide gauge-invariant physical results in any interaction regime was introduced [Nature Physics 15, 803 (2019)]. Here we provide an alternative derivation of this result, based on the implementation in two-state systems …

We derive dynamical equations for a driven, dissipative quantum system in which the environment- induced relaxation rate is comparable to the Rabi frequency, avoiding assumptions on the frequency dependence of the environmental coupling. When the environmental coupling varies significantly on the scale of the Rabi frequency, secular or rotating wave approximations break down. Our approach avoids these approximations, yielding dynamical, periodic steady-states. This is important for the qualitative and quantitative description of the interaction between driven quantum dots and their phonon envi…
We demonstrate how an acoustic phonon bath when coupled to a quantum dot with the help of a bichromatic laser field may effectively form a quantum squeezed reservoir. This approach allows to achieve an arbitrary degree of squeezing of the effective reservoir and it incorporates the properties of the reservoir into two parameters, which can be controlled by varying the ratio of the Rabi frequencies of the bichromatic field. It is found that for unequal Rabi frequencies, the effective reservoir may appear as a quantum squeezed field of ordinary or inverted harmonic oscillators. When the Rabi fre…
Why does controlling quantum phenomena appear easy to achieve? Why do effective quantum controls appear easy to find? Why is chemical synthesis and property optimization easier than expected? How to explain the commonalities across the optimal control applications in quantum mechanics, chemistry, material science, biological evolution and engineering? The theory of quantum control landscapes (QCL) is developed by Prof. Rabitz and his colleagues to address these puzzling questions. Unfortunately, the obtained conclusions are subject of gross misinterpretations which are spread in hundreds of pu…

We study the nature of the ergodicity-breaking "quantum many-body scar" states that appear in the PXP model describing constrained Rabi oscillations. For a {wide class of bipartite lattices} of Rydberg atoms, we reveal that the nearly energy-equidistant tower of these states arises from the Hamiltonian's close proximity to a generalized projector-embedding form, a structure common to many models hosting quantum many-body scars. We construct a non-Hermitian, but strictly local extension of the PXP model hosting exact quantum scars, and show how various Hermitian scar-stabilizing extensions from…
In this work we analyse critically Griffiths's example of the classical superluminal motion of a bug shadow. Griffiths considers that this example is conceptually very close to quantum nonlocality or superluminality,i.e. quantum breaking of the famous Bell inequality. Or, generally, he suggests implicitly an absolute asymmetric duality (subluminality vs. superluminality) principle in any fundamental physical theory. It, he hopes, can be used for a natural interpretation of the quantum mechanics too. But we explain that such Griffiths's interpretation retires implicitly but significantly from us…
Asymmetric steering is an effect whereby an inseparable bipartite system can be found to be described by either quantum mechanics or local hidden variable theories depending on which one of Alice or Bob makes the required measurements. We show that, even with an inseparable bipartite system, situations can arise where Gaussian measurements on one half are not sufficient to answer the fundamental question of which theory gives an adequate description and the whole system must be considered. This phenomenon is possible because of an asymmetry in the definition of the original Einstein-Podolsky-R…
