This work proposes a novel SLAM framework for stereo and visual inertial odometry estimation. It builds an efficient and robust parametrization of co-planar points and lines which leverages specific geometric constraints to improve camera pose optimization in terms of both efficiency and accuracy. %reduce the size of the Hessian matrix in the optimization. The pipeline consists of extracting 2D points and lines, predicting planar regions and filtering the outliers via RANSAC. Our parametrization scheme then represents co-planar points and lines as their 2D image coordinates and parameters of planes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing it to traditional parametrizations in a novel Monte-Carlo simulation set. Further, the whole stereo SLAM and VIO system is compared with state-of-the-art methods on the public real-world dataset EuRoC. Our method shows better results in terms of accuracy and efficiency than the state-of-the-art. The code is released at https://github.com/LiXin97/Co-Planar-Parametrization.
Accurate 3D point cloud map generation is a core task for various robot missions or even for data-driven urban analysis. To do so, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology have been elaborated. To compose a full SLAM system, many odometry and place recognition methods have independently been proposed in academia. However, they have hardly been integrated or too tightly combined so that exchanging (upgrading) either single odometry or place recognition module is very effort demanding. Recently, the performance of each module has be…

To accomplish task efficiently in a multiple robots system, a problem that has to be addressed is Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) has been used for many SLAM solutions due to its superb accuracy, but its performance degrades in featureless environments, like tunnels or long corridors. Centralized SLAM solves the problem with a cloud server, which requires a huge amount of computational resources and lacks robustness against central node failure. To address these issues, we present a distributed SLAM solution to estimate the trajectory of a grou…
Robust and fast motion estimation and mapping is a key prerequisite for autonomous operation of mobile robots. The goal of performing this task solely on a stereo pair of video cameras is highly demanding and bears conflicting objectives: on one hand, the motion has to be tracked fast and reliably, on the other hand, high-level functions like navigation and obstacle avoidance depend crucially on a complete and accurate environment representation. In this work, we propose a two-layer approach for visual odometry and SLAM with stereo cameras that runs in real-time and combines feature-based matc…
Commonly, SLAM algorithms are focused on a static environment, however, there are several scenes where dynamic objects are present. This work presents the STDyn-SLAM an image feature-based SLAM system working on dynamic environments using a series of sub-systems, like optic flow, orb features extraction, visual odometry, and convolutional neural networks to discern moving objects in the scene. The neural network is used to support object detection and segmentation to avoid erroneous maps and wrong system localization. The STDyn-SLAM employs a stereo pair and is developed for outdoor environmen…
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is considered to be an essential capability for intelligent vehicles and mobile robots. However, most of the current lidar SLAM approaches are based on the assumption of a static environment. Hence the localization in a dynamic environment with multiple moving objects is actually unreliable. The paper proposes a dynamic SLAM framework RF-LIO, building on LIO-SAM, which adds adaptive multi-resolution range images and uses tightly-coupled lidar inertial odometry to first remove moving objects, and then match lidar scan to the submap. Thus, it can obta…
LiDAR odometry is one of the essential parts of LiDAR simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). However, existing LiDAR odometry tends to match a new scan simply iteratively with previous fixed-pose scans, gradually accumulating errors. Furthermore, as an effective joint optimization mechanism, bundle adjustment (BA) cannot be directly introduced into real-time odometry due to the intensive computation of large-scale global landmarks. Therefore, this letter designs a new strategy named a landmark map for bundle adjustment odometry (LMBAO) in LiDAR SLAM to solve these problems. First, BA-ba…
This paper proposes a novel approach to stereo visual odometry without stereo matching. It is particularly robust in scenes of repetitive high-frequency textures. Referred to as DSVO (Direct Stereo Visual Odometry), it operates directly on pixel intensities, without any explicit feature matching, and is thus efficient and more accurate than the state-of-the-art stereo-matching-based methods. It applies a semi-direct monocular visual odometry running on one camera of the stereo pair, tracking the camera pose and mapping the environment simultaneously; the other camera is used to optimize the sc…
We propose a novel approach for fast and accurate stereo visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) independent of feature detection and matching. We extend monocular Direct Sparse Odometry (DSO) to a stereo system by optimizing the scale of the 3D points to minimize photometric error for the stereo configuration, which yields a computationally efficient and robust method compared to conventional stereo matching. We further extend it to a full SLAM system with loop closure to reduce accumulated errors. With the assumption of forward camera motion, we imitate a LiDAR scan using the 3D …
This paper introduces the united monocular-stereo features into a visual-inertial tightly coupled odometry (UMS-VINS) for robust pose estimation. UMS-VINS requires two cameras and a low-cost inertial measurement unit (IMU). The UMS-VINS is an evolution of VINS-FUSION, which modifies the VINS-FUSION from the following three perspectives. 1) UMS-VINS extracts and tracks features from the sub-pixel plane to achieve better positions of the features. 2) UMS-VINS introduces additional 2-dimensional features from the left and/or right cameras. 3) If the visual initialization fails, the IMU propagatio…
This paper proposes an A*SLAM system that features combining two sets of fisheye stereo cameras and taking the image edge as the SLAM features. The dual fisheye stereo camera sets cover the full environmental view of the SLAM system. From each fisheye stereo image pair, a panorama depth image can be directly extracted for initializing the SLAM feature. The edge feature is an illumination invariant feature. The paper presents a method of the edge-based simultaneous localization and mapping process using both the normal and inverted images interchangeably.
In this paper, we develop a robust, efficient visual SLAM system that utilizes spatial inhibition of low threshold, baseline lines, and closed-loop keyframe features. Using ORB-SLAM2, our methods include stereo matching, frame tracking, local bundle adjustment, and line and point global bundle adjustment. In particular, we contribute re-projection in line with the baseline. Fusing lines in the system consume colossal time, and we reduce the time from distributing points to utilizing spatial suppression of feature points. In addition, low threshold key points can be more effective in dealing wi…
We have proposed, to the best of our knowledge, the first-of-its-kind LiDAR-Inertial-Visual-Fused simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system with a strong place recognition capacity. Our proposed SLAM system is consist of visual-inertial odometry (VIO) and LiDAR inertial odometry (LIO) subsystems. We propose the LIO subsystem utilizing the measurement from the LiDAR and the inertial sensors to build the local odometry map, and propose the VIO subsystem which takes in the visual information to construct the 2D-3D associated map. Then, we propose an iterative Kalman Filter-based optimiz…
Visual-inertial SLAM is essential for robot navigation in GPS-denied environments, e.g. indoor, underground. Conventionally, the performance of visual-inertial SLAM is evaluated with open-loop analysis, with a focus on the drift level of SLAM systems. In this paper, we raise the question on the importance of visual estimation latency in closed-loop navigation tasks, such as accurate trajectory tracking. To understand the impact of both drift and latency on visual-inertial SLAM systems, a closed-loop benchmarking simulation is conducted, where a robot is commanded to follow a desired trajectory…
LiDAR odometry can achieve accurate vehicle pose estimation for short driving range or in small-scale environments, but for long driving range or in large-scale environments, the accuracy deteriorates as a result of cumulative estimation errors. This drawback necessitates the inclusion of loop closure detection in a SLAM framework to suppress the adverse effects of cumulative errors. To improve the accuracy of pose estimation, we propose a new LiDAR-based SLAM method which uses F-LOAM as LiDAR odometry, Scan Context for loop closure detection, and GTSAM for global optimization. In our approach…
Recent interest towards autonomous navigation and exploration robots for indoor applications has spurred research into indoor Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) robot systems. While most of these SLAM systems use Visual and LiDAR sensors in tandem with an odometry sensor, these odometry sensors drift over time. To combat this drift, Visual SLAM systems deploy compute and memory intensive search algorithms to detect `Loop Closures', which make the trajectory estimate globally consistent. To circumvent these resource (compute and memory) intensive algorithms, we present ViWiD, which in…
The ubiquitous planes and structural consistency are the most apparent features of indoor multi-story Buildings compared with outdoor environments. In this paper, we propose a tightly coupled LiDAR-Inertial 3D SLAM framework with plane features for the multi-story building. The framework we proposed is mainly composed of three parts: tightly coupled LiDAR-Inertial odometry, extraction of representative planes of the structure, and factor graph optimization. By building a local map and inertial measurement unit (IMU) pre-integration, we get LiDAR scan-to-local-map matching and IMU measurements,…

In the real-life environments, due to the sudden appearance of windows, lights, and objects blocking the light source, the visual SLAM system can easily capture the low-contrast images caused by over-exposure or over-darkness. At this time, the direct method of estimating camera motion based on pixel luminance information is infeasible, and it is often difficult to find enough valid feature points without image processing. This paper proposed HE-SLAM, a new method combining histogram equalization and ORB feature extraction, which can be robust in more scenes, especially in stages with low-cont…

This paper reports on a robust RGB-D SLAM system that performs well in scarcely textured and structured environments. We present a novel keyframe-based continuous visual odometry that builds on the recently developed continuous sensor registration framework. A joint geometric and appearance representation is the result of transforming the RGB-D images into functions that live in a Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS). We solve both registration and keyframe selection problems via the inner product structure available in the RKHS. We also extend the proposed keyframe-based odometry method to…

Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is a fundamental task to mobile and aerial robotics. LiDAR based systems have proven to be superior compared to vision based systems due to its accuracy and robustness. In spite of its superiority, pure LiDAR based systems fail in certain degenerate cases like traveling through a tunnel. We propose Stereo Visual Inertial LiDAR (VIL) SLAM that performs better on these degenerate cases and has comparable performance on all other cases. VIL-SLAM accomplishes this by incorporating tightly-coupled stereo visual inertial odometry (VIO) with LiDAR mapping …
The emergence of modern RGB-D sensors had a significant impact in many application fields, including robotics, augmented reality (AR) and 3D scanning. They are low-cost, low-power and low-size alternatives to traditional range sensors such as LiDAR. Moreover, unlike RGB cameras, RGB-D sensors provide the additional depth information that removes the need of frame-by-frame triangulation for 3D scene reconstruction. These merits have made them very popular in mobile robotics and AR, where it is of great interest to estimate ego-motion and 3D scene structure. Such spatial understanding can enable…
We propose a novel semi-direct approach for monocular simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) that combines the complementary strengths of direct and feature-based methods. The proposed pipeline loosely couples direct odometry and feature-based SLAM to perform three levels of parallel optimizations: (1) photometric bundle adjustment (BA) that jointly optimizes the local structure and motion, (2) geometric BA that refines keyframe poses and associated feature map points, and (3) pose graph optimization to achieve global map consistency in the presence of loop closures. This is achieved in …
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) has wide robotic applications such as autonomous driving and unmanned aerial vehicles. Both computational efficiency and localization accuracy are of great importance towards a good SLAM system. Existing works on LiDAR based SLAM often formulate the problem as two modules: scan-to-scan match and scan-to-map refinement. Both modules are solved by iterative calculation which are computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose a general solution that aims to provide a computationally efficient and accurate framework for LiDAR based SLAM. Specifica…

With the development of computer vision, visual odometry is adopted by more and more mobile robots. However, we found that not only its own pose, but the poses of other moving objects are also crucial for the decision of the robot. In addition, the visual odometry will be greatly disturbed when a significant moving object appears. In this letter, a stereo-based multi-motion visual odometry method is proposed to acquire the poses of the robot and other moving objects. In order to obtain the poses simultaneously, a continuous motion segmentation module and a coordinate conversion module are appl…

We present the DLR Planetary Stereo, Solid-State LiDAR, Inertial (S3LI) dataset, recorded on Mt. Etna, Sicily, an environment analogous to the Moon and Mars, using a hand-held sensor suite with attributes suitable for implementation on a space-like mobile rover. The environment is characterized by challenging conditions regarding both the visual and structural appearance: severe visual aliasing poses significant limitations to the ability of visual SLAM systems to perform place recognition, while the absence of outstanding structural details, joined with the limited Field-of-View of the utiliz…
Feature-based visual structure and motion reconstruction pipelines, common in visual odometry and large-scale reconstruction from photos, use the location of corresponding features in different images to determine the 3D structure of the scene, as well as the camera parameters associated with each image. The noise model, which defines the likelihood of the location of each feature in each image, is a key factor in the accuracy of such pipelines, alongside optimization strategy. Many different noise models have been proposed in the literature; in this paper we investigate the performance of sev…
We propose the concept of a multi-frame GAN (MFGAN) and demonstrate its potential as an image sequence enhancement for stereo visual odometry in low light conditions. We base our method on an invertible adversarial network to transfer the beneficial features of brightly illuminated scenes to the sequence in poor illumination without costly paired datasets. In order to preserve the coherent geometric cues for the translated sequence, we present a novel network architecture as well as a novel loss term combining temporal and stereo consistencies based on optical flow estimation. We demonstrate t…

Visual odometry is a widely used technique in the field of robotics and automation to keep a track on the location of a robot using visual cues alone. In this paper, we propose a joint forward backward visual odometry framework by combining both, the forward motion and backward motion estimated from stereo cameras. The basic framework of LIBVIOS2 is used here for pose estimation as it can run in real-time on standard CPUs. The complementary nature of errors in the forward and backward mode of visual odometry helps in providing a refined motion estimation upon combining these individual estimat…
