We propose a new local-binary ghost imaging by using point-by-point method. This method can compensate the degradation of imaging quality due to the loss of information during binarization process. The numerical and experimental results show that the target details can be reconstructed well by this method when compared with traditional ghost imaging. By comparing the differences of the speckle patterns from different binarization methods, we also give the corresponding explanation. Our results may have the potential applications in areas with high requirements for imaging details, such as target recognition.
Ghost imaging (GI) is a novel imaging method, which can reconstruct the object information by the light intensity correlation measurements. However, at present, the field of view (FOV) is limited to the illuminating range of the light patterns. To enlarge FOV of GI efficiently, here we proposed the omnidirectional ghost imaging system (OGIS), which can achieve a 360° omnidirectional FOV at one shot only by adding a curved mirror. Moreover, by designing the retina-like annular patterns with log-polar patterns, OGIS can obtain unwrapping-free undistorted panoramic images with uniform resolution,…
Ghost imaging is usually based on optoelectronic process and eletronic computing. We here propose a new ghost imaging scheme, which avoids any optoelectronic or electronic process. Instead, the proposed scheme exploits all-optical correlation via the light-light interaction and the vision persistence effect to generate images observed by naked eyes. To realize high contrast naked-eye ghost imaging, a special pattern-scanning architecture on a low-speed light-modulation disk is designed, which also enables high-resolution imaging with lower-order Hadamard vectors and boosts the imaging speed. W…
Ghost imaging LiDAR via sparsity constraints using push-broom scanning is proposed. It can image the stationary target scene continuously along the scanning direction by taking advantage of the relative movement between the platform and the target scene. Compared to conventional ghost imaging LiDAR that requires multiple speckle patterns staring the target, ghost imaging LiDAR via sparsity constraints using push-broom scanning not only simplifies the imaging system, but also reduces the sampling number. Numerical simulations and experiments have demonstrated its efficiency.
Traditional ghost imaging acquires images via the correlation of the intensity fluctuations of reference patterns and bucket values, and can even generate positive-negative images by conditionally averaging partial patterns. Here, we propose a domino successive-deviation ghost imaging method, which owns a good image quality comparable to that of differential ghost imaging with real-time fast computation, and a better robustness in practical scenarios where measurement noise and the instability of illuminating source coexists. Furthermore, it happens to generate real-time positive and negative …
Ghost imaging needs massive measurements to obtain an image with good visibility and the imaging speed is usually very low. In order to realize real-time high-resolution ghost imaging of a target which is located in a scenario with a large field of view (FOV), we propose a high-speed multi-resolution progressive computational ghost imaging approach. The target area is firstly locked by a low-resolution image with a small number of measurements, then high-resolution imaging of the target can be obtained by only modulating the light fields corresponding to the target area. The experiments verify…
Light field modulation matrix is closely related to the quality of reconstructed image in ghost imaging. The orthogonality light field modulation matrix with better noise immunity and high quality reconstructed image is urgently needed in the practical application of ghost imaging. In this work, we propose a Gold matrix ghost imaging method with excellent imaging and anti-noise performance, which is proud of the pseudo-randomness and orthogonality of the deterministic Gold matrix. Numerical simulation and experimental results show that the Gold matrix has the characteristics of both random spe…
Imaging and edge detection have been widely applied and played an important role in security checking and medical diagnosis. However, as we know, most edge detection based on ghost imaging system require a large measurement times and the target object image cannot be provided directly. In this work, a new edge detection based on joint iteration of projected Landweber iteration regularization and guided filter ghost imaging method have been proposed which can be improved the feature detection quality in ghost imaging. This method can also achieve high quality imaging. Simulation and experiment …
Based on optical correlations, ghost imaging is usually reconstructed by computer algorithm from the acquired data. We here proposed an alternatively high contrast naked-eye ghost imaging scheme which avoids computer algorithm processing. Instead, the proposed scheme uses a photoelectric feedback loop to realize the multiplication process of traditional ghost imaging. Meanwhile, it exploits the vision persistence effect to implement integral process and to generate negative images observed by naked eyes. To realize high contrast naked-eye ghost imaging, a special pattern-scanning architecture …
Nowadays the world has entered into the digital age, in which the data analysis and visualization have become more and more important. In analogy to imaging the real object, we demonstrate that the computational ghost imaging can image the digital data to show their characteristics, such as periodicity. Furthermore, our experimental results show that the use of optical imaging methods to analyse data exhibits unique advantages, especially in anti-interference. The data analysis with computational ghost imaging can be well performed against strong noise, random amplitude and phase changes in th…
We study the influence rules of the speckle size of light source on ghost imaging, and propose a new type of speckle patterns to improve the quality of ghost imaging. The results show that the image quality will first increase and then decrease with the increase of the speckle size, and there is an optimal speckle size for a specific object. Moreover, by using the random distribution of speckle positions, a new type of displacement speckle patterns is designed, and the imaging quality is better than that of the random speckle patterns. These results are of great significances for finding the b…
The Hadamard matrix with orthogonality is a more important modulation matrix for computational ghost imaging (CGI), especially its optimized Hadamard matrix. However, as far as we know, little mention has been paid to efficient and convenient Hadamard matrix generation for CGI. The existing methods are to reconstruct any row of Hadamard matrix into two-dimensional matrix and then optimize it. In this work, we propose a Hadamard `pipeline' coding computational ghost imaging approach, which can directly generate two-dimensional Hadamard derived pattern and Hadamard optimization sequence, whereby…
In this paper, we present a method for speckle pattern design using deep learning. The speckle patterns possess unique features after experiencing convolutions in Speckle-Net, our well-designed framework for speckle pattern generation. We then apply our method to the computational ghost imaging system. The standard deep learning-assisted ghost imaging methods use the network to recognize the reconstructed objects or imaging algorithms. In contrast, this innovative application optimizes the illuminating speckle patterns via Speckle-Net with specific sampling ratios. Our method, therefore, outpe…
Single-pixel imaging (SPI) uses a single-pixel detector to create an image of an object. SPI relies on a computer to construct an image, thus increasing both the size and cost of SPI and limiting its application. We developed instant single-pixel imaging (ISPI), an on-chip SPI system that implements real-time imaging at a rate of 25 fps. ISPI uses the instant ghost imaging algorithm we proposed which leverages signal differences for image creation. It does not require a computer, which greatly reduces its cost and size. The reconstruct time of ISPI for image creation is almost zero because lit…
Ghost imaging incorporating deep learning technology has recently attracted much attention in the optical imaging field. However, deterministic illumination and multiple exposure are still essential in most scenarios. Here we propose a ghost imaging scheme based on a novel conjugate-decoding deep learning framework (Y-net), which works well under both deterministic and indeterministic illumination. Benefited from the end-to-end characteristic of our network, the image of a sample can be achieved directly from a pair of correlated speckles collected by the detectors, and the sample is illuminat…
The nature of multiple samples to extract correlation information limits the applications of ghost imaging of moving objects. A novel multi-to-one neural network is proposed and the concept of "batch frame" is introduced to improve the serial imaging method. The neural network extracts more correlation information from a small number of samples, thus reducing the sampling ratio of the ghost imaging technique. We combine the correlation characteristics between images to propose a frame merging algorithm, which eliminates the dynamic blur of high-speed moving objects and further improves the rec…
We develop and experimentally demonstrate an imaging method based on the pink noise pattern in the computational ghost imaging (CGI) system, which has a strong ability to photograph moving objects. To examine its unique ability and scope of application, the object oscillates with variable amplitude in horizontal axis, and the result via commonly used white noise are also measured as a comparison. We show that our method can image the object when the white noise method fails. In addition, our method uses less number of patterns, and enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to a great extent.
Turbulence-free images cannot be produced by conventional computational ghost imaging because calculated light is not affected by the same atmospheric turbulence as real light. In this article, we first addressed this issue by measuring the photon number fluctuation autocorrelation of the signals generated by a conventional computational ghost imaging device. Our results illustrate how conventional computational ghost imaging without structural changes can be used to produce turbulence-free images.
A theory of random-matrix bases is presented, including expressions for orthogonality, completeness and the random-matrix synthesis of arbitrary matrices. This is applied to ghost imaging as the realization of a random-basis reconstruction, including an expression for the resulting signal-to-noise ratio. Analysis of conventional direct imaging and ghost imaging leads to a criterion which, when satisfied, implies reduced dose for computational ghost imaging. We also propose an experiment for x-ray phase contrast computational ghost imaging, which enables differential phase contrast to be achiev…
We propose a computational ghost imaging scheme using customized pink noise speckle pattern illumination. By modulating the spatial frequency amplitude of the speckles, we generate speckle patterns with a significant positive spatial correlation. We experimentally reconstruct images using our synthesized speckle patterns in the presence of a variety of noise sources and pattern distortion and shown it is robust to noise interference. The results are compared with the use of standard white noise speckle patterns. We show that our method gives good image qualities under different noise interfere…
Computational ghost imaging or single-pixel imaging enables the image formation of an unknown scene using a lens-free photodetector. In this Letter, we present a computational panoramic ghost imaging system that can achieve the full-color panorama using a single-pixel photodetector, where a convex mirror performs the optical transformation of the engineered Hadamard-based circular illumination pattern from unidirectionally to omnidirectionally. To our best knowledge, it is the first time to propose the concept of ghost panorama and realize preliminary experimentations. It is foreseeable that g…
Classical ghost imaging is a computational imaging technique that employs patterned illumination. It is very similar in concept to the single-pixel camera in that an image may be reconstructed from a set of measurements even though all imaging quanta that pass through that sample are never recorded with a position resolving detector. The method was first conceived and applied for visible-wavelength photons and was subsequently translated to other probes such as x rays, atomic beams, electrons and neutrons. In the context of ghost imaging using penetrating probes that enable transmission measur…
Computational ghost imaging generally requires a large number of pattern illumination to obtain a high-quality image. The colored noise speckle pattern was recently proposed to substitute the white noise pattern in a variety of noisy environments and gave a significant signal-to-noise ratio enhancement even with a limited number of patterns. We propose and experimentally demonstrate here an orthonormalization approach based on the colored noise patterns to achieve sub-Nyquist computational ghost imaging. We tested the reconstructed image in quality indicators such as the contrast-to-noise rati…
Ghost imaging (GI) is an imaging technique that uses the correlation between two light beams to reconstruct the image of an object. Conventional GI algorithms require large memory space to store the measured data and perform complicated offline calculations, limiting practical applications of GI. Here we develop an instant ghost imaging (IGI) technique with a differential algorithm and an implemented high-speed on-chip IGI hardware system. This algorithm uses the signal between consecutive temporal measurements to reduce the memory requirements without degradation of image quality compared wit…
Computational ghost imaging (CGI) and single-pixel camera (SPC) are two types of single-pixel imaging and attracts increasing interest in recent years. The performance differences of CGI and SPC in difference light disturbance environment are investigated. In comparison with CGI, we demonstrate that the quality of SPC is always better in the same conditions and local light disturbance has a larger influence to CGI/SPC than global light disturbance. In addition, a method to improve the reconstruction result of SPC is proposed if the source's energy is unstable and there is light disturbance in …
By encoding the high-dimensional light-field imaging information into a detectable two-dimensional speckle plane, ghost imaging camera via sparsity constraints (GISC camera) can directly catch the high-dimensional light-field imaging information with only one snapshot. This makes it worth to revisit the spatial resolution limit of this optical imaging system. In this paper we show both theoretically and experimentally that, while the resolution in high-dimensional light-field space is still limited by diffraction, the statistical spatial resolution of GISC camera can be greatly improved compar…
Ghost imaging is demonstrated using a poly-energetic reactor source of thermal neutrons. The method presented enables position resolution to be incorporated, into a variety of neutron instruments that are not position resolving. In an imaging context, ghost imaging can be beneficial for dose reduction and resolution enhancement. We also demonstrate a super-resolution variant of the method, namely a parallel form of neutron ghost imaging, with the ability to significantly increase the spatial resolution of a pixelated detector such as a CCD or CMOS camera. Extensions of our neutron ghost-imagin…
Ghost imaging can capture 2D images with a point detector instead of an array sensor. It therefore offers a solution to the challenge of building area format sensors in wavebands where such sensors are difficult and expensive to produce and opens up new imaging modalities due to high-performance single-pixel detectors. Traditionally, ghost imaging retrieves the image of an object offline, by correlating measured light intensities and applied illuminating patterns. Here we present a feedback-based approach for online updating of the imaging result that can bypass post-processing, termed self-ev…
A spectral camera based on ghost imaging via sparsity constraints (GISC) acquires a spectral data-cube (x; y; λ) through a single exposure. The noise immunity of the system is one of the important factors affecting the quality of the reconstructed images, especially at low sampling rates. Tailoring the intensity to generate super-Rayleigh speckle patterns which have superior noise immunity may offer an effective route to promote the imaging quality of GISC spectral camera. According to the structure of GISC spectral camera, we proposed a universal method for generating super-Rayleigh speckle p…
Ghost imaging (GI) is an imaging technique that uses the second-order correlation between two light beams to obtain the image of an object. However, standard GI is affected by optical background noise, which reduces its practical use. We investigated the robustness of an instant ghost imaging (IGI) algorithm against optical background noise and compare it with the conventional GI algorithm. Our results show that IGI is extremely resistant to spatiotemporally varying optical background noise that can change over a large range. When the noise is large in relation to the signal, IGI will still pe…
Spectral camera based on ghost imaging via sparsity constraints (GISC spectral camera) obtains three-dimensional (3D) hyperspectral information with two-dimensional (2D) compressive measurements in a single shot, which has attracted much attention in recent years. However, its imaging quality and real-time performance of reconstruction still need to be further improved. Recently, deep learning has shown great potential in improving the reconstruction quality and reconstruction speed for computational imaging. When applying deep learning into GISC spectral camera, there are several challenges n…
Computational ghost imaging is an imaging technique in which an object is imaged from light collected using a single-pixel detector with no spatial resolution. Recently, ghost cytometry has been proposed for a high-speed cell-classification method that involves ghost imaging and machine learning in flow cytometry. Ghost cytometry skips the reconstruction of cell images from signals and directly used signals for cell-classification because this reconstruction is what creates the bottleneck in the high-speed analysis. In this paper, we provide theoretical analysis for learning from ghost imaging…
Imaging and analysis of many single cells hold great potential in our understanding of heterogeneous and complex life systems and in enabling biomedical applications. We here introduce a recently realized image-free "imaging" cytometry technology, which we call ghost cytometry. While a compressive ghost imaging technique utilizing object's motion relative to a projected static light pattern allows recovery of their images, a key of this ghost cytometry is to achieve ultrafast cell classification by directly applying machine learning methods to the compressive imaging signals in a temporal doma…

Ghost imaging radar is a new system of gaze imaging radar with high detection sensitivity, super-resolution and better anti-interference performance, but the relative motion between the radar system and the target will make the target imaging deteriorate. This paper proposes to perform absolute position localisation of a single target in the field of view by weighting the correlation strength of a single frame image of rough target, and to compensate translation of the reference arm speckle according to the localisation and tracking trajectory to accumulate the rough image into a high quality …
A new focal-plane three-dimensional (3D) imaging method based on temporal ghost imaging is proposed and demonstrated. By exploiting the advantages of temporal ghost imaging, this method enables slow integrating cameras have an ability of 3D surface imaging in the framework of sequential flood-illumination and focal-plane detection. The depth information of 3D objects is easily lost when imaging with traditional cameras, but it can be reconstructed with high-resolution by temporal correlation between received signals and reference signals. Combining with a two-dimensional (2D) projection image …
In this paper, we propose an advanced framework of ghost edge imaging, named compressed ghost edge imaging (CGEI). In the scheme, a set of structured speckle patterns with pixel shifting are illuminated on an unknown object, and the output is collected by a bucket detector without any spatial resolution. By using compressed sensing algorithm, we obtain the horizontal and vertical edge information of the unknown object with the bucket detector detection results and the known structured speckle patterns. The edge is finally constructed by the two-dimentional edge information. The experimental an…
We introduced a new kind of patterns named Special-Hadamard patterns, which could be used as structured illuminations of computational ghost imaging. Special-Hadamard patterns can get a better image quality than Hadamard patterns in a noisy environment. We can completely reconstruct the original object in a noiseless environment by using Special-Hadamard patterns, and the size of object also can be adjusted arbitrarily, these advantages cannot be achieved by other common patterns. We also performed simulations to compare the results of Special Hadamard patterns with the results of Hadamard pat…
The unpaired training can be the only option available for fast deep learning-based ghost imaging, where obtaining a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) image copy of each low SNR ghost image could be practically time-consuming and challenging. This paper explores the capabilities of deep learning to leverage computational ghost imaging when there is a lack of paired training images. The deep learning approach proposed here enables fast ghost imaging through reconstruction of high SNR images from faint and hastily shot ghost images using a constrained Wasserstein generative adversarial network. I…
Recently, ghost imaging has been attracting attentions because its mechanism would lead to many applications inaccessible to conventional imaging methods. However, it is challenging for high contrast and high resolution imaging, due to its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the demand of high sampling rate in detection. To circumvent these challenges, we here propose a ghost imaging scheme that exploits Haar wavelets as illuminating patterns with a bi-frequency light projecting system and frequency-selecting single-pixel detectors. This method provides a theoretically 100% image contrast and …
We present a framework for computational ghost imaging based on deep learning and customized pink noise speckle patterns. The deep neural network in this work, which can learn the sensing model and enhance image reconstruction quality, is trained merely by simulation. To demonstrate the sub-Nyquist level in our work, the conventional computational ghost imaging results, reconstructed imaging results using white noise and pink noise via deep learning are compared under multiple sampling rates at different noise conditions. We show that the proposed scheme can provide high-quality images with a …
There is a consensus that turbulence-free images cannot be obtained by conventional computational ghost imaging (CGI) because the CGI is only a classic simulation, which does not satisfy the conditions of turbulence-free imaging. In this article, we first report a turbulence-immune CGI method based on a multi-scale generative adversarial network (MsGAN). Here, the conventional CGI framework is not changed, but the conventional CGI coincidence measurement algorithm is optimized by an MsGAN. Thus, the satisfactory turbulence-free ghost image can be reconstructed by training the network, and the …
Ghost imaging (GI) is a novel imaging technique based on the second-order correlation of light fields. Due to limited number of samplings in practice, traditional GI methods often reconstruct objects with unsatisfactory quality. To improve the imaging results, many reconstruction methods have been developed, yet the reconstruction quality is still fundamentally restricted by the modulated light fields. In this paper, we propose to improve the imaging quality of GI by optimizing the light fields, which is realized via matrix optimization for a learned dictionary incorporating the sparsity prior…
Ghost imaging has recently been successfully achieved in the X-ray regime; due to the penetrating power of X-rays this immediately opens up the possibility of X-ray ghost tomography. No research into this topic currently exists in the literature. Here we present adaptations of conventional tomography techniques to this new ghost imaging scheme. Several numerical implementations for tomography through X-ray ghost imaging are considered. Specific attention is paid to schemes for denoising of the resulting tomographic reconstruction, issues related to dose fractionation, and considerations regard…
Computational ghost imaging is a promising technique for single-pixel imaging because it is robust to disturbance and can be operated over broad wavelength bands, unlike common cameras. However, one disadvantage of this method is that it has a long calculation time for image reconstruction. In this paper, we have designed a dedicated calculation circuit that accelerated the process of computational ghost imaging. We implemented this circuit by using a field-programmable gate array, which reduced the calculation time for the circuit compared to a CPU. The dedicated circuit reconstructs images a…

Ghost imaging, Fourier transform spectroscopy, and the newly developed Hadamard transform crystallography are all examples of multiplexing measurement strategies. Multiplexed experiments are performed by measuring multiple points in space, time, or energy simultaneously. This contrasts to the usual method of systematically scanning single points. How do multiplexed measurements work and when they are advantageous? Here we address these questions with a focus on applications involving x-rays or electrons. We present a quantitative framework for analyzing the expected error and radiation dose of…
Ghost imaging (GI) is an unconventional imaging method that retrieves the image of an object by correlating a series of known illumination patterns with the total reflected (or transmitted) intensity. We here demonstrate a scheme which can remove the basic requirement of knowing the incident patterns on the object, enabling GI to non-invasively image objects through turbid media. As an experimental proof, we project a set of patterns towards an object hidden inside turbid media that scramble the illumination, making the patterns falling on the object completely unknown. We theoretically prove …
Computational ghost imaging (CGI) has recently been intensively studied as an indirect imaging technique. However, the speed of CGI cannot meet the requirements of practical applications. Here, we propose a novel CGI scheme for high-speed imaging. In our scenario, the conventional CGI data processing algorithm is optimized to a new compressed sensing (CS) algorithm based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). CS is used to process the data collected by a conventional CGI device. Then, the processed data are trained by a CNN to reconstruct the image. The experimental results show that our sch…
