The paper proposes a new, conservative fully-discrete scheme for the numerical solution of the regularised shallow water Boussinesq system of equations in the cases of periodic and reflective boundary conditions. The particular system is one of a class of equations derived recently and can be used in practical simulations to describe the propagation of weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive long water waves, such as tsunamis. Studies of small-amplitude long waves usually require long-time simulations in order to investigate scenarios such as the overtaking collision of two solitary waves or the propagation of transoceanic tsunamis. For long-time simulations of non-dissipative waves such as solitary waves, the preservation of the total energy by the numerical method can be crucial in the quality of the approximation. The new conservative fully-discrete method consists of a Galerkin finite element method for spatial semidiscretisation and an explicit relaxation Runge--Kutta scheme for integration in time. The Galerkin method is expressed and implemented in the framework of mixed finite element methods. The paper provides an extended experimental study of the accuracy and convergence properties of the new numerical method. The experiments reveal a new convergence pattern compared to standard Galerkin methods.
The shear shallow water model provides an approximation for shallow water flows by including the effect of vertical shear in the model. This model can be derived from the depth averaging process by including the second order velocity fluctuations which are neglected in the classical shallow water approximation. The resulting model has a non-conservative structure which resembles the 10-moment equations from gas dynamics. This structure facilitates the development of path conservative schemes and we construct HLL, 3-wave and 5-wave HLLC-type solvers. An explicit and semi-implicit MUSCL-Hancock …
We develop a new second-order unstaggered path-conservative central-upwind (PCCU) scheme for ideal and shallow water magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. The new scheme possesses several important properties: it locally preserves the divergence-free constraint, it does not rely on any (approximate) Riemann problem solver, and it robustly produces high-resolution and non-oscillatory results. The derivation of the scheme is based on the Godunov-Powell nonconservative modifications of the studied MHD systems. The local divergence-free property is enforced by augmenting the modified systems with …
Macro-micro decomposition for consistent and conservative model order reduction of hyperbolic shallow water moment equations: A study using POD-Galerkin and dynamical low rank approximation
We present a novel class of locally conservative, entropy stable and well-balanced discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the nonlinear shallow water equation with a non-flat bottom topography. The major novelty of our work is the use of velocity field as an independent solution unknown in the DG scheme, which is closely related to the entropy variable approach to entropy stable schemes for system of conservation laws proposed by Tadmor [22] back in 1986, where recall that velocity is part of the entropy variable for the shallow water equations. Due to the use of velocity as an independent so…
The shear shallow water model is a higher order model for shallow flows which includes some shear effects that are neglected in the classical shallow models. The model is a non-conservative hyperbolic system which can admit shocks, rarefactions, shear and contact waves. The notion of weak solution is based on a path but the choice of the correct path is not known for this problem. In this paper, we construct exact solution for the Riemann problem assuming a linear path in the space of conserved variables, which is also used in approximate Riemann solvers. We compare the exact solutions with th…
The regularisation of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws has been a problem of great importance for achieving uniqueness of weak solutions and also for accurate numerical simulations. In a recent work, the first two authors proposed a so-called Hamiltonian regularisation for nonlinear shallow water and isentropic Euler equations. The characteristic property of this method is that the regularisation of solutions is achieved without adding any artificial dissipation or ispersion. The regularised system possesses a Hamiltonian structure and, thus, formally preserves the corresponding energy f…
The representation of small scale barriers, such as sea-walls, in coastal flooding simulations is a common computational constraint that can be difficult to overcome due to the combination of the need for resolution and the CFL constraining time stepping involved in solving the underlying PDE. This article proposes an approach that uses the state redistribution method (SRD) on shallow water equations to alleviate these problems while remaining conservative and geometrically easy to implement. We will demonstrate the method versus two other comparable approaches along with convergence results. …

We present a novel staggered semi-implicit hybrid FV/FE method for the numerical solution of the shallow water equations at all Froude numbers on unstructured meshes. A semi-discretization in time of the conservative Saint-Venant equations with bottom friction terms leads to its decomposition into a first order hyperbolic subsystem containing the nonlinear convective term and a second order wave equation for the pressure. For the spatial discretization of the free surface elevation an unstructured mesh of triangular simplex elements is considered, whereas a dual grid of the edge-type is employ…
We are interested in the numerical approximation of discontinuous solutions in non conservative hyperbolic systems. An extension to second-order of a new strategy based on in-cell discontinuous reconstructions to deal with this challenging topic is presented. This extension is based on the combination of the first-order in-cell reconstruction and the MUSCL-Hancock reconstruction. The first-order strategy allowed in particular to capture exactly the isolated shocks and this new second-order extension keep this property. We also set the basis of an extension to high-order methods following this …

We present a new high-resolution, non-oscillatory semi-discrete central-upwind scheme for one-dimensional two-layer shallow-water flows with friction and entrainment along channels with arbitrary cross sections and bottom topography. These flows are described by a conditionally hyperbolic balance law with non-conservative products. A detailed description of the properties of the model is provided, including entropy inequalities and asymptotic approximations of the eigenvalues of the corresponding coefficient matrix. The scheme extends existing central-upwind semi-discrete numerical methods for…

This article is devoted to the construction of a new class of semi-Lagrangian (SL) schemes with implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta (RK) time stepping for PDEs involving multiple space-time scales. The semi-Lagrangian (SL) approach fully couples the space and time discretization, thus making the use of RK strategies particularly difficult to be combined with. First, a simple scalar advection-diffusion equation is considered as a prototype PDE for the development of a high order formulation of the semi-Lagrangian IMEX algorithms. The advection part of the PDE is discretized explicitly at the a…

We present a splitting method for the one-dimensional Saint-Venant-Exner equations used for describing the bed evolution in shallow water systems. We adapt the flux vector splitting approach of Toro and Vazquez-Cendòn and identify one subsystem of conservative equations (advection system) and one of non-conservative equations (pressure system), both having a very simple eigenstructure compared to the full system. The final numerical scheme is constructed using a Godunov-type path-conservative scheme for the pressure system and a simple conservative Godunov method for the advection system and s…
The fluid flow transport and hydrodynamic problems often take the form of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. In this work we will present a new scheme of finite volume methods for solving these evolution equations. It is a family of finite volume Eulerian-Lagrangian methods for the solution of non-linear problems in two space dimensions on unstructured triangular meshes. The proposed approach belongs to the class of predictor-corrector procedures where the numerical fluxes are reconstructed using the method of characteristics, while an Eulerian method is used to discretize the conservati…
