Machine learning and data mining algorithms play important roles in designing intrusion detection systems. Based on their approaches toward the detection of attacks in a network, intrusion detection systems can be broadly categorized into two types. In the misuse detection systems, an attack in a system is detected whenever the sequence of activities in the network matches with a known attack signature. In the anomaly detection approach, on the other hand, anomalous states in a system are identified based on a significant difference in the state transitions of the system from its normal states. This chapter presents a comprehensive discussion on some of the existing schemes of intrusion detection based on misuse detection, anomaly detection and hybrid detection approaches. Some future directions of research in the design of algorithms for intrusion detection are also identified.
Differential privacy (DP) is a neat privacy definition that can co-exist with certain well-defined data uses in the context of interactive queries. However, DP is neither a silver bullet for all privacy problems nor a replacement for all previous privacy models. In fact, extreme care should be exercised when trying to extend its use beyond the setting it was designed for. This paper reviews the limitations of DP and its misuse for individual data collection, individual data release, and machine learning.
A large amount of work has been done on the KDD 99 dataset, most of which includes the use of a hybrid anomaly and misuse detection model done in parallel with each other. In order to further classify the intrusions, our approach to network intrusion detection includes use of two different anomaly detection models followed by misuse detection applied on the combined output obtained from the previous step. The end goal of this is to verify the anomalies detected by the anomaly detection algorithm and clarify whether they are actually intrusions or random outliers from the trained normal (and th…

We review the use of differential privacy (DP) for privacy protection in machine learning (ML). We show that, driven by the aim of preserving the accuracy of the learned models, DP-based ML implementations are so loose that they do not offer the ex ante privacy guarantees of DP. Instead, what they deliver is basically noise addition similar to the traditional (and often criticized) statistical disclosure control approach. Due to the lack of formal privacy guarantees, the actual level of privacy offered must be experimentally assessed ex post, which is done very seldom. In this respect, we pres…
Cyber attacks constitute a significant threat to organizations with implications ranging from economic, reputational, and legal consequences. As cybercriminals' techniques get sophisticated, information security professionals face a more significant challenge to protecting information systems. In today's interconnected realm of computer systems, each attack vector has a network dimension. The present study investigates network intrusion attempts with anomaly-based machine learning models to provide better protection than the conventional misuse-based models. Two models, namely an ensemble lear…

One of the main tasks of cybersecurity is recognizing malicious interactions with an arbitrary system. Currently, the logging information from each interaction can be collected in almost unrestricted amounts, but identification of attacks requires a lot of effort and time of security experts. We propose an approach for identifying fraud activity through modeling normal behavior in interactions with a system via machine learning methods, in particular LSTM neural networks. In order to enrich the modeling with system specific knowledge, we propose to use an interactive visual interface that allo…
A PAXOS based State Machine Replication System for Anomaly Detection

Anomalies in emails such as phishing and spam present major security risks such as the loss of privacy, money, and brand reputation to both individuals and organizations. Previous studies on email anomaly detection relied on a single type of anomaly and the analysis of the email body and subject content. A drawback of this approach is that it takes into account the written language of the email content. To overcome this deficit, this study conducted feature extraction and selection on email header datasets and leveraged both multi and one-class anomaly detection approaches. Experimental analys…
As machine learning and cybersecurity continue to explode in the context of the digital ecosystem, the complexity of cybersecurity data combined with complicated and evasive machine learning algorithms leads to vast difficulties in designing an end to end system for intelligent, automatic anomaly classification. On the other hand, traditional systems use elementary statistics techniques and are often inaccurate, leading to weak centralized data analysis platforms. In this paper, we propose a novel system that addresses these two problems, titled CAMLPAD, for Cybersecurity Autonomous Machine Le…
Many approaches have evolved to enhance network attacks detection anomaly using SNMP-MIBs. Most of these approaches focus on machine learning algorithms with a lot of SNMP-MIB database parameters, which may consume most of hardware resources (CPU, memory, and bandwidth). In this paper we introduce an efficient detection model to detect network attacks anomaly using Lazy.IBk as a machine learning classifier and Correlation, and ReliefF as attribute evaluators on SNMP-MIB interface parameters. This model achieved accurate results (100%) with minimal hardware resources consumption. Thus, this mod…

In the context of the Industrial Internet of Things, communication technology, originally used in home and office environments, is introduced into industrial applications. Commercial off-the-shelf products, as well as unified and well-established communication protocols make this technology easy to integrate and use. Furthermore, productivity is increased in comparison to classic industrial control by making systems easier to manage, set up and configure. Unfortunately, most attack surfaces of home and office environments are introduced into industrial applications as well, which usually have …

Recently, advances in machine learning techniques have attracted the attention of the research community to build intrusion detection systems (IDS) that can detect anomalies in the network traffic. Most of the research works, however, do not differentiate among different types of attacks. This is, in fact, necessary for appropriate countermeasures and defense against attacks. In this paper, we investigate both detecting and categorizing anomalies rather than just detecting, which is a common trend in the contemporary research works. We have used a popular publicly available dataset to build an…
Protecting the networks of tomorrow is set to be a challenging domain due to increasing cyber security threats and widening attack surfaces created by the Internet of Things (IoT), increased network heterogeneity, increased use of virtualisation technologies and distributed architectures. This paper proposes SDS (Software Defined Security) as a means to provide an automated, flexible and scalable network defence system. SDS will harness current advances in machine learning to design a CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) using NAS (Neural Architecture Search) to detect anomalous network traffic.…

Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are a main impendence in cyber security of computer networks. In 2015, a successful breach remains undetected 146 days on average, reported by [Fi16].With our work we demonstrate a feasible and fast way to analyse real world log data to detect breaches or breach attempts. By adapting well-known kill chain mechanisms and a combine of a time series database and an abstracted graph approach, it is possible to create flexible attack profiles. Using this approach, it can be demonstrated that the graph analysis successfully detects simulated attacks by analysing th…
The rapid development in the field of System of Chip (SoC) technology, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and artificial intelligence has brought more possibilities of improving and solving the current problems. With data analytics and the use of machine learning/deep learning, it is made possible to learn the underlying patterns and make decisions based on what was learned from massive data generated from IoT sensors. When combined with cloud computing, the whole pipeline can be automated, and free of manual controls and operations. In this paper, an implementation of an automated dat…
Software-defined networking (SDN) is a new paradigm that allows developing more flexible network applications. SDN controller, which represents a centralized controlling point, is responsible for running various network applications as well as maintaining different network services and functionalities. Choosing an efficient intrusion detection system helps in reducing the overhead of the running controller and creates a more secure network. In this study, we investigate the performance of the well-known anomaly-based intrusion detection approaches in terms of accuracy, false alarm rate, precis…
