The quantum fluctuations of a physical property can be observed in the measurement statistics of any measurement that is at least partially sensitive to that physical property. Quantum theory indicates that the effective distribution of values taken by the physical property depends on the specific measurement context based on which these values are determined and weak values have been identified as the contextual values describing this dependence of quantum fluctuations on the measurement context. Here, the relation between classical statistics and quantum contextuality is explored by considering systems entangled with a quantum reference. The quantum fluctuations of the system can then be steered by precise projective measurements of the reference, resulting in different contextual values of the quantum fluctuations depending on the effective state preparation context determined by the measurement of the reference. The results show that mixed state statistics are consistent with a wide range of potential contexts, indicating that the precise definition of a context requires maximal quantum coherence in both state preparation and measurement.
We present a new and feasible test proving quantum contextuality in four-dimensional Hiltbert space. In our scheme, a contradiction between quantum mechanics and noncontextual hidden variables is revealed through the measurement statistics of two joint measurements of an ensemble of non-entangled qubits. The origin of nonclassicality is fully attributed to the measurement process. Quantum optical realization using photon pairs and linear optics are presented.
The ontological model framework for an operational theory has generated much interest in recent years. The debate concerning reality of quantum states has been made more precise in this framework. With the introduction of generalized notion of contextuality in this framework, it has been shown that completely mixed state of a qubit is \emph{preparation contextual}. Interestingly, this new idea of preparation contextuality has been used to demonstrate nonlocality of some $ψ$-epistemic models without any use of Bell's inequality. In particular, nonlocality of a non maximally $ψ$-epistemic model …
Modal quantum theory (MQT) is a simplified cousin of ordinary Hilbert space quantum theory. We show that two important theorems of actual quantum theory, the Kochen-Specker theorem excluding non-contextual hidden variables and the Conway-Kochen "free will theorem" about entangled systems, have direct analogues in MQT. The proofs of these analogue theorems are similar to, but much simpler than, the originals. We also show that the structure of possible measurement results for an entangled system in MQT cannot be represented by probability assignments satisfying the no-signaling principle, such …
Recent experiments have demonstrated ququart state-independent quantum contextuality and qutrit state-dependent quantum contextuality. So far, the most basic form of quantum contextuality pointed out by Kochen and Specker, and Bell, has eluded experimental confirmation. Here we present an experimentally feasible test to observe qutrit state-independent quantum contextuality using single photons in a three-path setup. In addition, we show that if the same measurements are performed on two entangled qutrits, rather than sequentially on the same qutrit, then the noncontextual inequality becomes a…
Quantum nonlocality can be revealed "via local contextuality" in qudit-qudit entangled systems with $d > 2$, that is, through the violation of inequalities containing Alice-Bob correlations that admit a local description, and Alice-Alice correlations (between the results of sequences of measurements on Alice's subsystem) that admit a local (but contextual) description. A fundamental question to understand the respective roles of entanglement and local contextuality is whether nonlocality via local contextuality exists when the parties have only qubit-qubit entanglement. Here we respond affirma…
The information-theoretic approach to Bell's theorem is developed with use of the conditional $q$-entropies. The $q$-entropic measures fulfill many similar properties to the standard Shannon entropy. In general, both the locality and noncontextuality notions are usually treated with use of the so-called marginal scenarios. These hypotheses lead to the existence of a joint probability distribution, which marginalizes to all particular ones. Assuming the existence of such a joint probability distribution, we derive the family of inequalities of Bell's type in terms of conditional $q$-entropies f…
The Klyachko inequality is an inequality for the probabiities of the values of five observables of a spin-1 particle, which is satisfied by any noncontextual assignment of values to this set of observables, but is violated by the probabilities defined by a certain quantum state. We describe an experiment between two entangled spin-1 particles to test contextuality via a related inequality. We point out that a test of contextuality by measurements on a single particle to confirm the Klyachko inequality requires an assumption of non-disturbance by the measuring instrument, which is avoided in th…
We study the contextuality of a three-level quantum system using classical conditional entropy of measurement outcomes. First, we analytically construct the minimal configuration of measurements required to reveal contextuality. Next, an entropic contextual inequality is formulated, analogous to the entropic Bell inequalities derived by Braunstein and Caves in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 61}, 662 (1988)], that must be satisfied by all non-contextual theories. We find optimal measurements for violation of this inequality. The approach is easily extendable to higher dimensional quantum systems and mo…
Two entangled particles in threedimensional Hilbert space (per particle) are considered in an EPR-type arrangement. On each side the Kochen-Specker observables $\{J_1^2,J_2^2,J_3^2\}$ and $\{\bar J_1^2, \bar J_2^2,J_3^2\}$ with $[J_1^2,\bar J_1^2]\neq 0$ are measured. The outcomes of measurements of $J_3^2$ (via $J_1^2,J_2^2$) and $J_3^2$ (via $\bar J_1^2,\bar J_2^2$) are compared. Although formally $J_3^2$ is associated with the same projection operator, a strong form of quantum contextuality states that an outcome depends on the complete disposition of the measurement apparatus, in particula…
According to a standard view, quantum mechanics (QM) is a contextual theory and quantum probability does not satisfy Kolmogorov's axioms. We show, by considering the macroscopic contexts associated with measurement procedures and the microscopic contexts (mu-contexts) underlying them, that one can interpret quantum probability as epistemic, despite its non-Kolmogorovian structure. To attain this result we introduce a predicate language L(x), a classical probability measure on it and a family of classical probability measures on sets of mu contexts, each element of the family corresponding to a…
We develop an operator-based description of two types of multimode-entangled single-neutron quantum optical devices: Wollaston prisms and radio-frequency spin flippers in inclined magnetic field gradients. This treatment is similar to the approach used in quantum optics, and is convenient for the analysis of quantum contextuality measurements in certain types of neutron interferometers. We describe operationally the way multimode-entangled single-neutron states evolve in these devices, and provide expressions for the associated operators describing the dynamics, in the limit in which the neutr…
In this thesis we use the language of sheaf theory in order to develop a deeper understanding of some of the fundamental differences - such as entanglement, contextuality and non-locality - between quantum and classical physics. We first present, based on the work of Abramsky and Brandenburger, how sheaves, defined over certain posets of physically meaningful contexts, give a natural setting for capturing and analysing important quantum mechanical phenomena, such as quantum non-locality and contextuality. We also describe how this setting naturally leads to a three level hierarchy of quantum c…
This paper introduces an extension of the de Broglie-Bohm-Bell formulation of quantum mechanics, which includes intrinsic particle degrees of freedom, such as spin, as elements of reality. To evade constraints from the Kochen-Specker theorem the discrete spin values refer to a specific basis -- i.e., a single spin vector orientation for each particle; these spin orientations are, however, not predetermined, but dynamic and guided by the (reduced, spin-only) wave function of the system, which is conditional on the realized location values of the particles. In this way, the unavoidable contextua…
We report on the realization and application of non-destructive three-qubit parity measurements on nuclear spin qubits in diamond. We use high-fidelity quantum logic to map the parity of the joint state of three nuclear spin qubits onto an electronic spin qubit that acts as an ancilla, followed by single-shot non-destructive readout of the ancilla combined with an electron spin echo to ensure outcome-independent evolution of the nuclear spins. Through the sequential application of three such parity measurements, we demonstrate the generation of genuine multipartite entangled states out of the …
Banaszek, Wódkiewicz and others (\cite{Banaszek},\cite{Chen},\cite{Chen-Zhang}) made the surprising discovery that Einstein-Bell locality inequalities can be violated by the two mode squeezed vacuum by a factor $\sqrt{2}$, in spite of the fact that the state has a positive Wigner function. I use here the more general Gleason-Kochen-Specker assumption of non-contextuality \cite{Gleason} to express classicality. I then derive non-contextuality Bell inequalities for correlations of $N$ pseudo spins embedded in an infinite dimensional continuous variable Hilbert space, and show that their maximum …
This work develops analytic methods to quantitatively demarcate quantum reality from its subset of classical phenomenon, as well as from the superset of general probabilistic theories. Regarding quantum nonlocality, we discuss how to determine the quantum limit of Bell-type linear inequalities. In contrast to semidefinite programming approaches, our method allows for the consideration of inequalities with abstract weights, by means of leveraging the Hermiticity of quantum states. Recognizing that classical correlations correspond to measurements made on separable states, we also introduce a pr…
The Kochen--Specker (KS) theorem reveals the nonclassicality of single quantum systems. In contrast, Bell's theorem and entanglement concern the nonclassicality of composite quantum systems. Accordingly, unlike incompatibility, entanglement and Bell non-locality are not necessary to demonstrate KS-contextuality. However, here we find that for multiqubit systems, entanglement and non-locality are both essential to proofs of the Kochen--Specker theorem. Firstly, we show that unentangled measurements (a strict superset of local measurements) can never yield a logical (state-independent) proof of …
Using measurements pertaining to a suitable Mach-Zehnder(MZ) type setup, a curious quantum mechanical effect of contextuality between the path and the polarization degrees of freedom of a polarized photon is demonstrated, without using any notion of realism or hidden variables - an effect that holds good for the product as well as the entangled states. This form of experimental context-dependence is manifested in a way such that at \emph{either} of the two exit channels of the MZ setup used, the empirically verifiable \emph{subensemble} statistical properties obtained by an arbitrary polarizat…
We propose a scheme for conditional generation of two-mode N-photon path-entangled states of traveling light field. These states may find applications in quantum optical lithography and they may be used to improve the sensitivity of interferometric measurements. Our method requires only single-photon sources, linear optics (beam splitters and phase shifters), and photodetectors with single photon sensitivity.
We present a new quantum secret sharing protocol based on recent advances in Mermin-type contextuality scenarios, which has some security guarantees against postquantum nonsignaling attackers. It is a fundamental assumption of secret sharing protocols that not all players are trusted parties, and that some may collude amongst themselves and with eavesdroppers to break confidentiality. To this extent, quantum secret sharing introduces a new layer of security, enabling eavesdropping detection via entangled states and noncommuting observables. A more thorough security analysis, however, becomes c…
We demonstrate electromagnetic quantum states of single photons and of correlated photon pairs exhibiting "hybrid" entanglement between spin and orbital angular momentum. These states are obtained from entangled photon pairs emitted by spontaneous parametric down conversion, by employing a $q$-plate for coupling the spin and orbital degrees of freedom of a photon. Entanglement and contextual quantum behavior (that is also non-local, in the case of photon pairs) is demonstrated by the reported violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality. In addition a classical analog of the hybrid s…
Recent experiments and theory have further illuminated the concept of "quantum contextuality". In this paper we take an inequality - the Pentagram (or KCBS) inequality, which is violated by an unentangled spin-1 system - and given a relaxed assumption of non-contextuality show that a hidden variable model may be constructed that replicates exactly the quantum bound. This is in contrast to the case of an entangled pair of spin-1/2 particles where a similar relaxation of the assumption of locality does not lead to a replication of the quantum bound. Some reasons are proposed for why this may be …
We propose a measurement protocol to generate path-entangled NOON states conditionally from two pulsed type II optical parametric oscillators. We calculate the fidelity of the produced states and the success probability of the protocol. The trigger detectors are assumed to have finite dead time, and for short pulse trigger fields they are modeled as on/off detectors with finite efficiency. Continuous-wave operation of the parametric oscillators is also considered.
The maximally entangled mixed states of Munro, James, White, and Kwiat [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 64} (2001) 030302] are shown to exhibit interesting features vis a vis conditional entropic measures. The same happens with the Ishizaka and Hiroshima states [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 62} 022310 (2000)], whose entanglement-degree can not be increased by acting on them with logic gates. Special types of entangled states that do not violate classical entropic inequalities are seen to exist in the space of two qubits. Special meaning can be assigned to the Munro {\it et al.} special participation ratio of 1.8.

We propose a universal scheme for the probabilistic generation of an arbitrary multimode entangled state of light with finite expansion in Fock basis. The suggested setup involves passive linear optics, single photon sources, strong coherent laser beams, and photodetectors with single-photon resolution. The efficiency of this setup may be greatly enhanced if, in addition, a quantum memory is available.
Standard quantum mechanics undeniably violates the notion of separability that classical physics accustomed us to consider as valid. By relating the phenomenon of quantum nonseparability to the all-important concept of potentiality, we effectively provide a coherent picture of the puzzling entangled correlations among spatially separated systems. We further argue that the generalized phenomenon of quantum nonseparability implies contextuality for the production of well-defined events in the quantum domain, whereas contextuality entails in turn a structural-relational conception of quantal obje…
We investigate the violation of non-contextuality by a class of continuous variable states, including variations of entangled coherent states (ECS's) and a two-mode continuous superposition of coherent states. We generalise the Kochen-Specker (KS) inequality discussed in A. Cabello, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 210401 (2008) by using effective bidimensional observables implemented through physical operations acting on continuous variable states, in a way similar to an approach to the falsification of Bell-CHSH inequalities put forward recently. We test for state-independent violation of KS ineq…
A system of cascaded qubits interacting via the oneway exchange of photons is studied. While for general operating conditions the system evolves to a superposition of Bell states (a dark state) in the long-time limit, under a particular resonance condition no steady state is reached within a finite time. We analyze the conditional quantum evolution (quantum trajectories) to characterize the asymptotic behavior under this resonance condition. A distinct bimodality is observed: for perfect qubit coupling, the system either evolves to a maximally entangled Bell state without emitting photons (the…
We propose a simple scheme to generate an arbitrary photon-added coherent state of a travelling optical field by using only a set of degenerate parametric amplifiers and single-photon detectors. Particularly, when the single-photon-added coherent state (SPACS) is observed by following, e.g., the novel technique of Zavatta \emph{$et al.$} (Science 306, 660 (2004)), we also obtain the generalized optical entangled $W$ state. Finally, a qualitative analysis of possible losses in our scheme is given.
We address the intrinsic multimode nature of the quantum state of light obtained by pulsed spontaneous parametric downconversion and develop a theoretical model based only on experimentally accessible quantities. We exploit the pairwise entanglement as a resource for conditional multimode measurements and derive closed formulas for the detection probability and the density matrix of the conditional states. We present a set of experiments performed to validate our model in different conditions that are in excellent agreement with experimental data. Finally, we evaluate nonGaussianity of the con…

In [\href{http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/037596019290711T}{Phys. Lett. A {\bf 166}, 293 (1992)}] Popescu characterized nonlocality of pure $n$-partite entangled systems by studying bipartite violation of local realism when $n-2$ number of parties perform projective measurements on their particles. A pertinent question in this scenario is whether similar characterization is possible for $n$-partite mixed entangled states also. In the present work we have followed an analogous approach so as to explore whether given a tripartite mixed entangled state the conditional bipartite s…

We present general principles underlying analysis of the dependence of random variables (outputs) on deterministic conditions (inputs). Random outputs recorded under mutually exclusive input values are labeled by these values and considered stochastically unrelated, possessing no joint distribution. An input that does not directly influence an output creates a context for the latter. Any constraint imposed on the dependence of random outputs on inputs can be characterized by considering all possible couplings (joint distributions) imposed on stochastically unrelated outputs. The target applica…
An approach for generating the entangled photonic states |F1,F2>+|F2,F1> from two arbitrary states |F1> and |F2> is proposed. The protocol is implemented by the conditionally induced beam-splitter coupling which leads to the selective swapping between two photonic modes. Such coupling occurs in a quantum system prepared in the superposition of two ground states with only one of them being involved in the swapping. All the entangled states in the category, such as entangled pairs of coherent states or Fock states (N00N states), can be efficiently produced in the same way by this method.
We show that the recently proposed scheme of teleportation of continuous variables [S.L. Braunstein and H.J. Kimble, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 869 (1998)] can be improved by a conditional measurement in the preparation of the entangled state shared by the sender and the recipient. The conditional measurement subtracts photons from the original entangled two-mode squeezed vacuum, by transmitting each mode through a low-reflectivity beam splitter and performing a joint photon-number measurement on the reflected beams. In this way the degree of entanglement of the shared state is increased and so is t…
In this paper, we describe how to realize conditional frequency entanglement swapping and to produce probabilisticly a three-photon frequency entangled state from two pairs of frequency entangled states by using an Acoustic-Optical-Modulator. Both schemes are very simple and may be implementable in practice.
Conditions to generate high-purity entangled vacuum-evacuated coherent states ($|0>|α>^0 - |-α>^0 |0>$ were studied for two cascade-placed beam splitters, with one squeezed state input and two coherent state inputs whenever a single photon is detected. Controlling the amplitudes and the phases of the beams allows for various amplitudes of the vacuum-evacuated coherent states ($|α>^ 0 = |α> -e^{-|α|^2} |0> $) up to $α= 2.160$ to be manipulated with high-purity.
The relations of antilinear maps, bipartite states and quantum channels is summarized. Antilinear maps are applied to describe bipartite states and entanglement. Teleportation is treated in this general formalism with an emphasis on conditional schemes applying partially entangled pure states. It is shown that in such schemes the entangled state shared by the parties, and those measured by the sender should ``match'' each other.
A violation of Bell-CHSH inequalities does not justify speculations about quantum non-locality, conspiracy and retro-causation. Such speculations are rooted in a belief that setting dependence of hidden variables in a probabilistic model, called a violation of measurement independence, would mean a violation of experimenters freedom of choice. This belief is unfounded because it is based on a questionable use of Bayes Theorem and on incorrect causal interpretation of conditional probabilities. In Bell-local realistic model, hidden variables describe only photonic beams created by a source, thu…

We study single photon optomechanics conditioned on photon counting events. By selecting only detection events that occur long after a photon pulse arrives at the cavity, the optomechanical interaction time can be increased, allowing a large momentum kick to be applied to the oscillator. We apply this to two optomechanical cavities set up within a Mach-Zhender interferometer driven by a single photon source. The conditional state of the mechanical modes in such a system becomes an entangled cat state for detection times resulting in maximum mechanical amplitude in phase space. Further we study…
The pure quantum entanglement is generalized to the case of mixed compound states on an operator algebra to include the classical and quantum encodings as particular cases. The true quantum entanglements are characterized by quantum couplings which are described as transpose-CP, but not Completely Positive (CP), trace-normalized linear positive maps of the algebra. The entangled (total) information is defined in this paper as a relative entropy of the conditional (the derivative of the compound state with respect to the input) and the unconditional output states. Thus defined the total informa…
We argue that Anton Zeilinger's "foundational conceptual principle" for quantum mechanics according to which an elementary system carries one bit of information is an idealistic principle, which should be replaced by a realistic principle of contextuality. Specific properties of quantum systems are a consequence of impossibility to speak about them without reference to the tools of their observation (identification) and, consequently, context in which these tools are applied. In particular, the assumption of non-locality is not required to explain quantum correlation. Correlated quantum events…
Characterizing quantum correlations in terms of information-theoretic principles is a popular chapter of quantum foundations. Traditionally, the principles adopted for this scope have been expressed in terms of conditional probability distributions, specifying the probability that a black box produces a certain output upon receiving a certain input. This framework is known as "device-independent". Another major chapter of quantum foundations is the information-theoretic characterization of quantum theory, with its sets of states and measurements, and with its allowed dynamics. The different fr…
We introduce a new concept called as the mutual uncertainty between two observables in a given quantum state which enjoys similar features like the mutual information for two random variables. Further, we define the conditional uncertainty as well as conditional variance and show that conditioning on more observable reduces the uncertainty. Given three observables, we prove a 'strong sub-additivity' relation for the conditional uncertainty under certain condition. As an application, we show that using the conditional variance one can detect bipartite higher dimensional entangled states. The ef…
We study the dynamics of quantum systems interacting with a stream of entangled qubits. Under fairly general conditions, we present a detailed framework describing the conditional dynamical maps for the system, called quantum trajectories, when the qubits are measured. Depending on the measurement basis, these quantum trajectories can be jump-type or diffusive-type, and they can exhibit features not present with quantum optical and single-qubit trajectories. As an example, we consider the case of two remote atoms, where jump-type quantum trajectories herald the birth and death of entanglement.
Entanglement is a counterintuitive feature of quantum physics that is at the heart of quantum technology. High-dimensional quantum states offer unique advantages in various quantum information tasks. Integrated photonic chips have recently emerged as a leading platform for the generation, manipulation and detection of entangled photons. Here, we report a silicon photonic chip that uses novel interferometric resonance-enhanced photon-pair sources, spectral demultiplexers and high-dimensional reconfigurable circuitries to generate, manipulate and analyse path-entangled three-dimensional qutrit s…
