Wireless control systems replace traditional wired communication with wireless networks to exchange information between actuators, plants and sensors in a control system. The noise in wireless channels renders ideal control policies suboptimal, and their performance is moreover directly dependent on the way in which wireless resources are allocated between control loops. Proper design of the control policy and the resource allocation policy based on both plant states and wireless fading states is then critical to achieve good performance. The resulting problem of co-designing control-aware resource allocation policies and communication-aware controllers, however, is challenging due to its infinite dimensionality, existence of system constraints and need for explicit knowledge of the plants and wireless network models. To overcome those challenges, we rely on constrained reinforcement learning algorithms to propose a model-free approach to the design of wireless control systems. We demonstrate the near optimality of control system performance and stability using near-universal policy parametrizations and present a practical model-free algorithm to learn the co-design policy. Numerical experiments show the strong performance of learned policies over baseline solutions.
The wide deployment of wireless industrial networks still faces the challenge of unreliable service due to severe multipath fading in industrial environments. Such fading effects are not only caused by the massive metal surfaces existing within the industrial environment but also, more significantly, the moving objects including operators and logistical vehicles. As a result, the mature analytical framework of mobile fading channel may not be appropriate for the wireless industrial networks especially the majority fixed wireless links. In this paper, we propose a qualitative analysis framework…

This letter illustrates our preliminary works in deep nerual network (DNN) for wireless communication scenario identification in wireless multi-path fading channels. In this letter, six kinds of channel scenarios referring to COST 207 channel model have been performed. 100% identification accuracy has been observed given signal-to-noise (SNR) over 20dB whereas a 88.4% average accuracy has been obtained where SNR ranged from 0dB to 40dB. The proposed method has tested under fast time-varying conditions, which were similar with real world wireless multi-path fading channels, enabling it to work …
In this paper, we investigate the joint impact of misalignment fading and local oscillator (LO) phase noise (PHN) in multi-carrier terahertz (THz) wireless systems. In more detail, after establishing a suitable system model that takes into account the particularities of the THz channel, as well as the transceivers characteristics, we present simulation results that quantify the joint impact of misalignment fading and PHN in terms of average signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and outage probability (OP).
We present a framework for operating a self-adaptive RIS inside a fading rich-scattering wireless environment. We model the rich-scattering wireless channel as being double-parametrized by (i) the RIS, and (ii) dynamic perturbers (moving objects, etc.). Within each coherence time, first, the self-adaptive RIS estimates the status of the dynamic perturbers (e.g., the perturbers' orientations and locations) based on measurements with an auxiliary wireless channel. Then, second, using a learned surrogate forward model of the mapping from RIS configuration and perturber status to wireless channel,…
Unreliable fading wireless channels are the main challenge for strict performance guarantees in mobile communications. Diversity schemes including massive number of antennas, huge spectrum bands and multi-connectivity links are applied to improve the outage performance. The success of these approaches relies heavily on the joint distribution of the underlying fading channels. In this work, we consider the $\varepsilon$-outage capacity of slowly fading wireless diversity channels and provide lower and upper bounds for fixed marginal distributions of the individual channels. This answers the que…
Energy-harvesting and wireless power transfer in cooperative relaying networks have recently attracted a considerable amount of research attention. Most of the existing work on this topic however focuses on Rayleigh fading channels which represents outdoor environments. Unlike these studies, in this paper we analyze the performance of wireless power transfer in two-hop decode-and-forward (DF) cooperative relaying systems in indoor channels characterized by log-normal fading. Three well-known energy-harvesting protocols are considered in our evaluations: a) time-switching relaying (TSR), b) pow…
Mitigating channel fading and transceiver impairments are desirable for high-speed terahertz (THz) wireless links. This paper analyzes the performance of a multi-antenna THz wireless system by considering the combined effect of pointing errors and fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model. We provide a statistical characterization of the maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver over independent and nonidentical (i.ni.d.) channel conditions in terms of multi-variate Fox's H by deriving density and distribution functions of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a single-link THz link using incomplete Ga…
This paper presents a quantified assessment of the physical layer security capabilities of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided wireless systems under eavesdropping. Specifically, we derive a closed-form expression for the ergodic secrecy capacity (ESC) that is adaptable to different types of fading and RIS size. The channels between the transmitter (TX) and RIS, the RIS and legitimate receiver as well as the TX and eavesdropper are assumed to follow independent mixture Gamma (MG) distributions. Note that MG is capable of modeling a large variety of well-known distributions, includin…
This paper considers cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output systems where the multiple-antenna access points (APs) assist the single-antenna user equipments (UEs) by wireless power transfer. The UEs utilize the energy harvested in the downlink to transmit uplink pilot and information signals to the APs. We consider practical Rician fading with the line-of-sight components of the channels being phase-shifted in each coherence block. The uplink spectral efficiency (SE) is derived for this model and the max-min fairness problem is considered where the optimization variables are the AP a…
We investigate joint source channel coding (JSCC) for wireless image transmission over multipath fading channels. Inspired by recent works on deep learning based JSCC and model-based learning methods, we combine an autoencoder with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) to cope with multipath fading. The proposed encoder and decoder use convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and directly map the source images to complex-valued baseband samples for OFDM transmission. The multipath channel and OFDM are represented by non-trainable (deterministic) but differentiable layers so that the sy…
The existing relay-assisted terahertz (THz) wireless system is limited to dual-hop transmission with pointing errors and short-term fading without considering the shadowing effect. This paper analyzes the performance of a multihop-assisted backhaul communication mixed with an access link under the shadowed fading with antenna misalignment errors. We derive statistical results of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the multihop link by considering independent but not identically distributed (i.ni.d) $α$-$μ$ fading channel with pointing errors employing channel-assisted (CA) and fixed-gain (FG) a…
We study the effect of channel fading in Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) and show that fading enhances the RFto- DC conversion efficiency of nonlinear RF energy harvesters. We then develop a new form of signal design for WPT, denoted as Transmit Diversity, that relies on multiple dumb antennas at the transmitter to induce fast fluctuations of the wireless channel. Those fluctuations boost the RF-to-DC conversion efficiency thanks to the energy harvester nonlinearity. In contrast with (energy) beamforming, Transmit Diversity does not rely on Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) and…
Terahertz (THz) frequency bands can be promising for data transmissions between the core network and access points (AP) for next-generation wireless systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a dual-hop THz-RF wireless system where an AP facilitates data transmission between a core network and user equipment (UE). We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with an independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) fading model for THz and RF links using the $α$-$μ$ distribution, the THz link with pointing errors, and asymmetrical relay position. We derive a closed…
Extensive research has already started on 6G and beyond wireless technologies due to the envisioned new use-cases and potential new requirements for future wireless networks. Although a plethora of modern physical layer solutions have been introduced in the last few decades, it is undeniable that a level of saturation has been reached in terms of the available spectrum, adapted modulation/coding solutions and accordingly the maximum capacity. Within this context, communications through reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which enable novel and effective functionalities including wave a…
Impedance matching between receive antenna and front-end significantly impacts channel capacity in wireless channels. To implement capacity-optimal matching, the receiver must know the antenna impedance. But oftentimes this impedance varies with loading conditions in the antenna near-field. To mitigate this variation, several authors have proposed antenna impedance estimation techniques. However, the optimality of these techniques remains unclear. In this paper, we consider antenna impedance estimation at MISO receivers over correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We derive in closed-form the opt…
The 3GPP new radio (NR) channel model introduced spatial consistency and a correlation model for multiple frequencies. Future extensions of this model will incorporate mobility at both ends of the link. These features are essential for many emerging wireless technologies in the 5G era. However, the existing small-scale-fading (SSF) model does not integrate these features coherently. To solve this problem, we propose a new SSF model that seamlessly integrates with the remaining NR model and allows the simultaneous simulation of all three features. We demonstrate this integration by showing that…
Programmable radio environments parametrized by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are emerging as a new wireless communications paradigm, but currently used channel models for the design and analysis of signal-processing algorithms cannot include fading in a manner that is faithful to the underlying wave physics. To overcome this roadblock, we introduce a physics-based end-to-end model of RIS-parametrized wireless channels with adjustable fading (coined PhysFad) which is based on a first-principles coupled-dipole formalism. PhysFad naturally incorporates the notions of space and causa…
This paper considers crowded massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications over a Rician fading channel, where the number of users is much greater than the number of available pilot sequences. A joint user identification and line-of-sight (LOS) component derivation algorithm is proposed without requiring a threshold. Based on the derived LOS component, we design a LOS-only channel estimator and an updated channel estimator.
In this paper, the performance of two-way relaying in mixed RF/FSO communication system with a backup RF link is investigated. Uplink RF channels are used to send data of $K$ users to a two-way relay, $R$, whereas FSO link is mainly used to exchange data between a base station $S$ and $R$. We propose to have a backup RF link between the relay $R$ and the node $S$ to improve reliability under certain conditions. All uplink RF channels follow Rayleigh fading model while $α$-$μ$ is adopted to model both backup RF and FSO links. We approximate the widely used Gamma-Gamma fading model using the $α$…
