Contrasting ground states of quantum magnets with the integer and half-integer spin moments are the manifestation of many-body quantum interference effects. In this work, we investigate the distinct nature of the integer and half-integer spin quantum spin liquids in the framework of the Kitaev's model on the honeycomb lattice. The models with arbitrary spin quantum numbers are not exactly solvable in contrast to the well-known quantum spin liquid solution of the spin-1/2 system. We use the tensor network wavefunctions for the integer and half-integer spin quantum spin liquid states to unveil the important difference between these states. We find that the distinct sign structures of the tensor network wavefunction for the integer and half-integer spin quantum spin liquids are responsible for completely different ground states in the spatially anisotropic limit. Hence the spatial anisotropy would be a useful diagnostic test for distinguishing these quantum spin liquid states, both in the numerical computations and experiments on real materials. We support this discovery via extensive numerics including the tensor network, DMRG, and exact diagonalization computations.
Recently there has been a great interest in understanding quantum spin liquid phases with varying spin magnitude, partly due to possible material realizations. A number of recent numerical computations suggest that the ground state of the S=1 Kitaev model may be a quantum spin liquid in analogy to the renowned $S$=$1/2$ model. On the other hand, the nature of the ground state remains elusive since the $S$=$1$ model is not exactly solvable in contrast to the $S$=$1/2$ model. In this work, we construct a tensor network ground state wavefunction for the S=1 Kitaev model, which is explicitly writt…
Given a class of $q$-local Hamiltonians, is it possible to find a simple variational state whose energy is a finite fraction of the ground state energy in the thermodynamic limit? Whereas product states often provide an affirmative answer in the case of bosonic (or qubit) models, we show that Gaussian states fail dramatically in the fermionic case, like for the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models. This prompts us to propose a new class of wavefunctions for SYK models inspired by the variational coupled cluster algorithm. We introduce a static ("0+0D") large-$N$ field theory to study the energy, two…
We study the decay and oscillations of Majorana fermion wavefunctions and ground state (GS) fermion parity in one-dimensional topological superconducting lattice systems. Using a Majorana transfer matrix method, we find that Majorana wavefunction properties are encoded in the associated Lyapunov exponent, which in turn is the sum of two independent components: a `superconducting component' which characterizes the gap induced decay, and the `normal component', which determines the oscillations and response to chemical potential configurations. The topological phase transition separating phases …
Recently, in the Luttinger liquid phase of the one-dimensional generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin-1/2 model, it has been found that the abelian bosonization formulas of the local spin operators only respect the exact discrete nonsymmorphic symmetry group of the model, not the emergent U(1) symmetry. In this work, we perform a renormalization group (RG) study to provide explanations for the origin of the U(1) breaking terms in the bosonization formulas. We find that the lack of U(1) symmetry originates from the wavefunction renormalization effects in the spin operators along the RG flow …
Kitaev quantum spin liquids have been the focus of intense research effort thanks to the discovery of various materials (e.g., RuCl3) that approximate their intriguing physics. In this paper we construct a mean-field approximation for a moir`e superlattice emerging in twisted Kitaev bilayers in terms of solutions of commensurate bilayers. We show that the band structure of deconfined spinons, defined on the mini-Brillouin zone of the superlattice, is greatly modified. The system exhibits a hyper-magic manifold: a series of nearly perfectly-flat bands appear at energies above the lowest gap, ex…
A spin fractionalizes into matter and gauge fermions in Kitaev's spin liquid on the honeycomb lattice. This follows from a Jordan-Wigner mapping to fermions, allowing for the construction of minimal entropy ground state wavefunction on the cylinder. We use this to calculate the entanglement entropy by choosing several distinct partitionings. First, by partitioning an infinite cylinder into two, the $-\ln 2$ topological entanglement entropy is reconfirmed. Second, the reduced density matrix of the gauge sector on the full cylinder is obtained after tracing out the matter degrees of freedom. Thi…
Kitaev's toric code is an exactly solvable model with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-topological order, which has potential applications in quantum computation and error correction. However, a direct experimental realization remains an open challenge. Here, we propose a building block for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theories coupled to dynamical matter and demonstrate how it allows for an implementation of the toric-code ground state and its topological excitations. This is achieved by introducing separate matter excitations on individual plaquettes, whose motion induce the required plaquette terms. The prop…

Thermodynamic properties of chiral spin liquids are investigated for a variant of the Kitaev model defined on a decorated honeycomb lattice. Using the quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we find that the model exhibits a finite-temperature phase transition associated with the time reversal symmetry breaking, in both topologically trivial and nontrivial regions. While changing the exchange constants, the phase transition changes from continuous to discontinuous one, apparently correlated with the change in the excitations from Abelian to non-Abelian anyons. We show this coincidence by computing the…
Arrays of Rydberg atoms constitute a highly tunable, strongly interacting venue for the pursuit of exotic states of matter. We develop a new strategy for accessing a family of fractionalized phases known as quantum spin liquids in two-dimensional Rydberg arrays. We specifically use effective field theory methods to study arrays assembled from Rydberg chains tuned to an Ising phase transition that famously hosts emergent fermions propagating within each chain. This highly entangled starting point allows us to naturally access spin liquids familiar from Kitaev's honeycomb model, albeit from an e…
We here investigate the entanglement structure of the ground state of a (3+1)-dimensional U(1) quantum spin liquid, which is described by the deconfined phase of a compact U(1) gauge theory. A gapless photon is the only low-energy excitation, with matter existing as deconfined but gapped excitations of the system. It is found that, for a given bipartition of the system, the elements of the entanglement spectrum can be grouped according to the electric flux between the two regions, leading to a useful interpretation of the entanglement spectrum in terms of electric charges living on the boundar…
