In this paper, we study the driven-dissipative p-spin models for $p\geq 2$. In thermodynamics limit, the equation of motion is derived by using a semiclassical approach. The long-time asymptotic states are obtained analytically, which exhibit multi-stability in some regions of the parameter space. The steady state is unique as the number of spins is finite. But the thermodynamic limit of the steady-state magnetization displays nonanalytic behavior somewhere inside the semiclassical multi-stable region. We find both the first-order and continuous dissipative phase transitions. As the number of spins increases, both the Liouvillian gap and magnetization variance vanish according to a power law at the continuous transition. At the first-order transition, the gap vanishes exponentially accompanied by a jump of magnetization in thermodynamic limit. The properties of transitions depend on the symmetry and semiclassical multistability, being qualitatively different among $p=2$, odd $p$ ($p\geq 3$) and even $p$ ($p\geq 4$).
Fluctuation-dissipation relations (FDRs) and time-reversal symmetry (TRS), two pillars of statistical mechanics, are both broken in generic driven-dissipative systems. These systems rather lead to non-equilibrium steady states far from thermal equilibrium. Driven-dissipative Ising-type models, however, are widely believed to exhibit effective thermal critical behavior near their phase transitions. Contrary to this picture, we show that both the FDR and TRS are broken even macroscopically at, or near, criticality. This is shown by inspecting different observables, both even and odd operators un…
We study the transverse-field Ising model with infinite-range coupling and spontaneous emission on every site. We find that there is spin squeezing in steady state due to the presence of the transverse field. This means that there is still entanglement, despite the decoherence from spontaneous emission. We analytically calculate fluctuations beyond mean-field theory using a phase-space approach, which involves converting the master equation into a Fokker-Planck equation for the Wigner function. Our calculations are relevant to current experiments with trapped ions.
Driven quantum systems coupled to an environment typically exhibit effectively thermal behavior with relaxational dynamics near criticality. However, a different qualitative behavior might be expected in the weakly dissipative limit due to the competition between coherent dynamics and weak dissipation. In this work, we investigate a driven-dissipative infinite-range Ising model in the presence of individual atomic dissipation, a model that emerges from the paradigmatic open Dicke model in the large-detuning limit. We show that the system undergoes a dynamical crossover from relaxational dynami…
Driven-dissipative many-body systems are difficult to analyze analytically due to their non-equilibrium dynamics, dissipation and many-body interactions. In this paper, we consider a driven-dissipative infinite-range Ising model with local spontaneous emission, which naturally emerges from the open Dicke model in the large-detuning limit. Utilizing an adaptation of the Suzuki-Trotter quantum-to-classical mapping, we develop an exact field-theoretical analysis and a diagrammatic representation of the spin model that can be understood from a simple scattering picture. With this representation, w…
We study theoretically a driven dissipative one-dimensional XXZ spin$-1/2$ chain with dipole coupling and a tunable strength of the Ising and XY interaction. Within a mean-field approximation, we find a rich phase diagram with uniform, spin density wave, antiferromagnetic and oscillatory phases, as well as regions of phase bistability. We study the phase diagram of small quantum systems using exact diagonalisation, and compare the results to the mean-field theory. We find that while expectation values only capture the uniform phases of the mean-field theory, fluctuations about these expectatio…
We study the dynamics of dissipative spin lattices with power-law interactions, realized via few-level atoms driven by coherent laser-coupling and decoherence processes. Using Monte-Carlo simulations, we determine the phase diagram in the steady state and analyze the dynamics of its generation. As opposed to mean-field predictions and nearest-neighbour models there is no phase transition to long-range ordered phases for realistic interactions and resonant driving. However, for finite laser detunings, we demonstrate the emergence of crystalline order with a vanishing dissipative gap. Although t…

We propose a quantum optical implementation of a class of dissipative spin systems, including the XXZ and Ising model, with ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices. Employing the motional degree of freedom of the atoms and detuned Raman transitions we show how to obtain engineerable dissipation and a tunable transversal magnetic field, enabling the study of the dynamics and steady-states of dissipative spin models. As an example of effects made accessible this way, we consider small spin chains and weak dissipation and show by numerical simulation that steady-state expectation values display pron…
Environmental interaction is a fundamental consideration in any controlled quantum system. While interaction with a dissipative bath can lead to decoherence, it can also provide desirable emergent effects including induced spin-spin correlations. In this paper we show that under quite general conditions, a dissipative bosonic bath can induce a long-range ordered phase, without the inclusion of any additional direct spin-spin couplings. Through a quantum-to-classical mapping and classical Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the $T=0$ quantum phase transition of an Ising chain embedded in a b…
Driven-dissipative systems are expected to give rise to non-equilibrium phenomena that are absent in their equilibrium counterparts. However, phase transitions in these systems generically exhibit an effectively classical equilibrium behavior in spite of their non-equilibrium origin. In this paper, we show that multicritical points in such systems lead to a rich and genuinely non-equilibrium behavior. Specifically, we investigate a driven-dissipative model of interacting bosons that possesses two distinct phase transitions: one from a high- to a low-density phase---reminiscent of a liquid-gas …

We study the dynamics of quantum information and of quantum correlations after a quantum quench, in transverse field Ising chains subject to generic linear dissipation. As we show, in the hydrodynamic limit of long times, large system sizes, and weak dissipation, entropy-related quantities -- such as the von Neumann entropy, the Rényi entropies, and the associated mutual information -- admit a simple description within the so-called quasiparticle picture. Specifically, we analytically derive a hydrodynamic formula, recently conjectured for generic noninteracting systems, which allows us to dem…
