This proceeding contribution presents the latest measurement of the CP-violation and other physics parameters in the $B_s^0 \to J/ψϕ$ decay channel performed by the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments. The measurements are based on a data set collected at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Besides the CP violating phase $ϕ_s$, the width difference between the $B_{s}^0$ meson mass eigenstates $ΔΓ_s$ and the average decay width $Γ_s$ are measured. The measured values are then combined with those collected at 8 TeV. The measurements are consistent with theoretical predictions based on the Standard Model.
In these proceedings, recent results on time-dependent and time-integrated measurements of $C\!P$ violation and of meson mixing in the charm sector are presented, including the first observation of $C\!P$ violation in the charm system.
This document presents eight recent and new analyses from the LHCb experiment covering results on CKM angle $γ$ and high precision measurements on charm mixing parameters. In addition, the latest CP violation measurements in charm and beauty decays are reported.
LHCb has collected the world's largest sample of charmed hadrons. This sample is used to search for direct and indirect CP violation in charm and to measure $D^0$ mixing parameters. Preliminary measurements from several decay modes are presented, with complementary time-dependent and time-integrated analyses.
We review basic phenomenology on $D^0$ mixing/CP violation and recent experimental results on them. $D^0$ mixing is established by combining results from multiple experiments but no CP violation in the charm sector has been seen. $D^0$ mixing from a single experiment will clarify the size of the mixing, and observation of CP violation in charm decays at the present level of experimental sensitivity would be clear signal of new physics beyond the standard model.
LHCb continues to expand its world-leading sample of charmed hadrons collected during LHC's Run 1 (2010-2012) and Run 2 (2015-present). This sample is yielding some of the most stringent tests of the Standard Model understanding of charm physics. This includes precise measurements of the neutral D-meson mixing parameters and some of the most sensitive searches for direct and indirect CP violation in charm interactions.
Precision measurements in charm physics offer a window into a unique sector of potential New Physics interactions. LHCb is poised to become a world leading experiment for charm studies, recording enormous statistics with a detector tailored for flavor physics. This article presents recent charm CPV and mixing studies from LHCb, including LHCb's first CP asymmetry measurement with 37 inverse pb of data collected in 2010. The difference of the CP asymmetries of D0 decays to the K-K+ and π-π+ final states is determined to be ΔA_{CP} = (-0.28 +/- 0.70 +/- 0.25)%. Significant updates to the materia…
Measurements of Flavor Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) processes (rare decays, flavor mixing) play a key role to pursue new physics beyond the Standard Model. We present recent analysis results about some FCNC transitions performed by CDF and D0 collaborations, including the first observation of the B_s->phi mu^+mu^- mode, the forward-backward asymmetry measurement in B->K^(*) mu^+mu^-, and updated measurements of B_s (B^0)->mu^+mu^-, using data corresponding to integrated luminosities from 3.7/fb to 5/fb. We also show the CDF/D0 combined measurement of the B_s mixing phase using 2.8/fb of dat…
The sensitivity to $B_s$ meson mixing phenomena can be significantly improved by distinguishing the initial meson flavour. The flavour tagging techniques used in the ATLAS measurement of the angular amplitudes contributing to $B_s \rightarrow J/ψϕ$ decays are presented using 4.9 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV from 2011. The methods, their performance and calibration on self-tagged $B^\pm \rightarrow J/ψK^\pm$ data are shown.
We present a brief review of CPV and mixing measurements in the charm sector, with emphasys in results published or presented since the previous edition of the Physics in Collision Symposia.
CP violation (CPV) in $D^0-\overline{D^0}$ mixing is described in terms of the dispersive and absorptive `weak phases' $ϕ_f^M$ and $ϕ_f^Γ$. They parametrize CPV originating from the interference of $D^0$ decays with and without dispersive mixing, and with and without absorptive mixing, respectively, for CP conjugate hadronic final states $f$, $\bar f$. These are distinct and separately measurable effects. For CP eigenstate final states, indirect CPV only depends on $ϕ_f^M$ (dispersive CPV), whereas $ϕ_f^Γ$ (absorptive CPV) can only be probed with non-CP eigenstate final states. Measurements of…
A first measurement of \fplus, the \CP-even content of the decay D->4pi using decays of $ψ(3770)$ to quantum correlated $D\bar{D}$ decays collected by the CLEO-c experiment is presented. The measured value is \fplus=$0.737 \pm 0.028$. This relatively high value makes the decay mode particularly suitable for both measurements of the CKM angle $γ$ and charm \CP-violation in a model independent way. This novel approach to studying indirect \CP-violation in charm decays is based on the time-dependent inclusive analysis of multi body self-conjugate states. These final states can be used to determin…
We present measurements of the branching fraction and time-dependent CP-violating (CPV) asymmetries in B0 --> K0S Pi0 decays based on 227 million Y(4S) --> BBbar decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. We obtain a branching fraction B(B0 --> K0 Pi0) = (11.4 +/- 0.9 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-6}, the magnitude of the direct CPV asymmetry C = 0.06 +/- 0.18 +/- 0.06 and the magnitude of the CPV asymmetry in the interference between mixing and decay S = 0.35 +0.30/-0.33 +/- 0.04, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. All results ar…
We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating (CPV) asymmetries in $B^{0}\to K_{s}^{0}π^{0}$ decays based on 124 million $Υ(4S)\to B\bar{B}$ decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $B$ Factory at SLAC. In a sample containing $122\pm 16$ signal decays, we obtain the magnitude of the direct CPV asymmetry $C_{K_{s}^{0}π^{0}} = 0.40^{+0.27}_{-0.28} \pm 0.09$ and the magnitude of the CPV asymmetry in the interference between mixing and decay $S_{K_{s}^{0}π^{0}} = 0.48^{+0.38}_{-0.47} \pm 0.06$ where the first error is statistical and the second systema…
We investigate the implications of one light eV scale sterile neutrino on the physics potential of the proposed long-baseline experiment DUNE. If the future short-baseline experiments confirm the existence of sterile neutrinos, then it can affect the mass hierarchy (MH) and CP-violation (CPV) searches at DUNE. The MH sensitivity still remains above 5$σ$ if the three new mixing angles ($θ_{14}, θ_{24}, θ_{34}$) are all close to $θ_{13}$. In contrast, it can decrease to 4$σ$ if the least constrained mixing angle $θ_{34}$ is close to its upper limit $\sim 30^0$. We also assess the sensitivity to …
A brief review of the experimental status of neutrino mixing. The model of neutrino oscillations has now been established with high confidence, with many of the model parameters measured to an accuracy of a few per cent. However, some parameters still remain unknown, notably the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the amount of CP violation. Recently, new questions have come to light, highlighting possibilities to search for new physics in the neutrino sector.
We report a measurement of D0-D0bar mixing in D0->Ks pi+ pi- decays using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis. We first assume CP conservation and subsequently allow for CP violation. The results are based on 540 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Assuming negligible CP violation, we measure the mixing parameters $x=(0.80\pm0.29^{+0.09 +0.10}_{-0.07 -0.14})%$ and $y=(0.33\pm0.24^{+0.08 +0.06}_{-0.12 -0.08})%$, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and systematic due to the Dalitz decay model, respectively. Allowing for CP…
The experimental status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is reviewed. Measurements discussed include B0_(s)-\bar{B}0_(s) mixing and several rare B and K decays with implications for |V_td| and |V_ts|. Extraction of |V_cb| and |V_ub| from studies of semileptonic B decay is also discussed.
Bi-large patterns for the leptonic mixing matrix are confronted with current neutrino oscillation data. We analyse the status of these patterns and determine, through realistic simulations, the potential of upcoming long-baseline experiment DUNE in testing bi-large \emph{ansatze} and discriminating amongst them.
The role of charm in testing the Standard Model description of quark mixing and CP violation through measurements of lifetimes, decay constants and semileptonic form factors is reviewed. Together with Lattice QCD, charm has the potential this decade to maximize the sensitivity of the entire flavor physics program to new physics. and pave the way for understanding physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC in the coming decade. The status of indirect searches for physics beyond the Standard Model through charm mixing, CP-violation and rare decays is also reported.
It is shown how high energy neutrino beams from very distant sources can be utilised to learn about some properties of neutrinos such as lifetimes, mass hierarchy etc. Furthemore, even mixing elements such as U_e3 and the CPV phase in the neutrino mixing matrix can be measured in principle. Pseudo-Dirac mass differences as small as 10^-18 eV^2 can be probed as well.
We review the theoretical status of the lifetime ratios $τ_{B^+} / τ_{B_d}$, $τ_{B_s} / τ_{B_d}$, $τ_{Λ_b} / τ_{B_d}$ and $τ_{B_c}$ and of the mixing quantities $ΔM_s$, $ΔΓ_s$ and $ϕ_s$. $ΔM_s$ and $ΔΓ_s$ suffer from large uncertainties due to the badly known decay constants, while the ratio $ΔΓ_s / ΔM_s$ can be determined with almost no non-perturbative uncertainties, therefore it can be used perfectly to find possible new physics contributions in the mixing parameters. We suggest a very clear method of visualizing the bounds on new physics and demonstrate this by combining the latest experim…
A short summary is given of the current status of B physics. Reasons for physics beyond the Standard Model are discussed. Constraints on New Physics are given using measurements of B mixing, Bs mixing, and CP violation, along with |Vub. Future goals, and upcoming new experiments are also mentioned.
Recent analyses of the LEP and Y(4S) data have better outlined the picture of semileptonic B decays. Results on inclusive and exclusive decay branching fractions and on the extraction of the Vub and Vcb elements of the CKM mixing matrix are discussed, together with some of the still open questions and the sources of model systematics.
Current status of charm mixing search, lifetime difference measurement and rare decay search are reported. The best upper limit at 95% CL for mixing is reported from the CLEO collaboration. E791 has reported lifetime difference measurement and results of rare decay searches. Rare decay searches of the FOCUS collaboration are in progress and their sensitivities to branching ratios are at the level of a few x 10^{-6}.
The NA62 experiment at CERN SPS recorded in 2007 a large sample of $K^+\toμ^+ν_μ$ decays. A peak search in the missing mass spectrum of this decay is performed. In the absence of observed signal, the limits obtained on $\mathcal{B}(K^+\toμ^+ν_h)$ and on the mixing matrix element $|U_{\mu4}|^2$ are reported. The upgraded NA62 experiment started data taking in 2015, with the aim of measuring the branching fraction of the $K+\toπ^+ν\barν$ decay. An update on the status of the experiment is presented.
A summary of the results of several recent studies of charm mixing is presented. A number of different methods were used, including the measurement of lifetime ratios for final states of different CP, time dependence of wrong-sign hadronic decays, fits to time-dependent Dalitz plots, and searches for wrong-sign semi-leptonic decays. Taken together, they suggest mixing is of order 1%. The status of searches for indirect CP violation is also reported.
We present measurements from Belle and BABAR of the time-dependent CP-violation parameters S and C in B->eta'K0 decays. Both experiments observe mixing-induced CP violation with a significance of more than 5 standard deviations in this b-> s penguin dominated mode. We also compare with theoretical expectations and discuss the latest results for SU(3)-related decays which are useful for obtaining bounds on the expected values of S and C.
This pedagogical overview will cover the current status of neutrino physics from an experimentalist's point of view, focusing primarily on oscillation studies. The evidence for neutrino oscillations will be presented, along with the prospects for further refinement of observations in each of the indicated regions of two-flavor oscillation parameter space. The next steps in oscillation physics will then be covered (under the assumption of three-flavor mixing): the quest for $θ_{13}$, mass hierarchy and, eventually, leptonic CP violation. Prospects for non-oscillation aspects of neutrino physics…
LHCb is a dedicated flavor physics experiment that will observe the 14 TeV proton-proton collisions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Construction of the LHCb detector is near completion, commissioning of the detector is well underway, and LHCb will be fully operational and ready to take data in advance of the projected May 2008 turn-on date for the LHC. The LHCb software trigger will feature a dedicated channel for events containing D* mesons that will dramatically enhance the statistical reach of LHCb in many charm physics measurements. The LHCb charm physics program is initially focuse…
As is well known, $B^0_{d,s}$--$\bar B^0_{d,s}$ mixing offers a profound probe into the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model. The data obtained at the $e^+e^-$ $B$ factories have already provided valuable insights into the $B_d$-meson system, and very recently also the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ oscillation frequency $ΔM_s$ has been measured at the Tevatron. We give a critical discussion of the interpretation of these data in terms of model-independent new-physics parameters. We address in particular the impact of the uncertainties of the relevant input parameters, set benchmarks for their …
We present an up-to-date global analysis of solar, atmospheric, reactor and accelerator neutrino data in the framework of three-neutrino oscillations. We discuss in detail the statistical significance of the observed "hint" of non-zero theta13 in the solar sector at the light of the latest experimental advances, such as the Borexino spectral data, the lower value of Gallium rate recently measured in SAGE, and the low energy threshold analysis of the combined SNO phase I and phase II. We also study the robustness of the results under changes of the inputs such as the choice of solar model fluxe…
An overview of current experimental bounds on $CPT$ violation in neutral meson mixing is given. New values for the $CPT$ asymmetry in the $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems are deduced from published BaBar, Belle and LHCb results. With dedicated analyses, LHCb will be able to further improve the bounds on $CPT$ violation in the $D^0$, $B^0$ and $B_s^0$ systems. Since $CPT$ violation implies violation of Lorentz invariance in an interacting local quantum field theory, the observed $CPT$ asymmetry will exhibit sidereal- and boost-dependent variations. Such $CPT$-violating and Lorentz-violating effects ar…
We review the current status of D0-antiD0 mixing, with special emphasis in the most recent results. We begin with a discussion of charm mixing and CP violation phenomenology, the evolution with the decay proper time, and physics processes contributing to these. Then we follow with the summary of the main experimental techniques and the results in the various final states. We make use of the analysis reporting the first evidence of D0-antiD0 mixing by BaBar in D0 -> K+ pi- decays as a textbook example, and then we discuss the results from other two-body and three-body final states. We conclude …
In this talk, I present new results [1] obtained from QCD spectral sum rules (QSSR), on the bag constant parameters entering in the analysis of the B^0_{(s)}-\bar B^0_{(s)} mass-differences. Taking the average of the results from the Laplace and moment sum rules, one obtains to order α_s: f_B\sqrt{\hat B_B}= (228 +- 61) MeV, f_{B_s}\sqrt{B_{B_s}}/{f_{B}\sqrt{B_{B}}= 1.18 +- 0.03, in units where f_π=130.7 MeV. Combined with the experimental data on the mass-differences ΔM_{d,s}, one obtains the constraint on the CKM weak mixing angle: |V_{ts}/V_{td}|^2 > 20.2(1.3). Alternatively, using the weak…
We review the status of three-neutrino mixing and the results of global analyses of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in 3+1 and 3+2 neutrino mixing schemes.
We present a global analysis of solar, atmospheric, reactor and accelerator neutrino data in the framework of three-neutrino oscillations based on data available in summer 2014. We provide the allowed ranges of the six oscillation parameters and show that their determination is stable with respect to uncertainties related to reactor neutrino and solar neutrino flux predictions. We find that the maximal possible value of the Jarlskog invariant in the lepton sector is $0.0329 \pm 0.0009$ ($\pm 0.0027$) at the $1σ$ ($3σ$) level and we use leptonic unitarity triangles to illustrate the ability of …
We present an update of our analysis of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in the framework of 3+1 neutrino mixing taking into account the recent update of MiniBooNE antineutrino data and the recent results of the MINOS search for nu_mu disappearance into sterile neutrinos (the more complicated 3+2 neutrino mixing is not needed since the CP-violating difference between MiniBooNE neutrino and antineutrino data has diminished). The results of our fits of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data including the MiniBooNE low-energy anomaly (now present both in the neutrino and antineutrino da…
We review the status of mixing of neutral $B$-mesons, including a discussion of the current precision of Standard Model (SM) predictions as well as the space that is left for effects of new physics. In that respect we present several observables, which are particularly sensitive to the remaining new physics (NP) parameter space. $B$-mixing can also be used to test the fundaments of quantum mechanics, here we suggest a new measurement of the ratio of like-sign dilepton events to opposite-sign dilepton events. Finally we summarise briefly the status of lifetimes of heavy hadrons. The correspondi…
New generation of three reactor neutrino experiments have made definitive measurements of the smallest neutrino mixing angle theta13 in 2012, based on the disappearance of electron antineutrinos. More precise measurements of the mixing angle have been made as well as the squared mass difference between electron neutrinos. A rather large value of theta13 has opened a new window to find the CP violation phase and to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. Future reactor experiments, JUNO and RENO50, are proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and to make highly precise measurements of t…
The current status of the phenomenology of short-baseline neutrino oscillations induced by light sterile neutrinos in the framework of 3+1 mixing is reviewed.
In this review we present the main features of the current status of neutrino physics. After a review of the theory of neutrino mixing and oscillations, we discuss the current status of solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. We show that the current data can be nicely accommodated in the framework of three-neutrino mixing. We discuss also the problem of the determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale through Tritium beta-decay experiments and astrophysical observations, and the exploration of the Majorana nature of massive neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay…
We review the experimental status of Bs mixing. After a brief historical overview, current studies of the time dependence of Bs oscillations are described, with an emphasis on the different experimental techniques used by the ALEPH, CDF, DELPHI, OPAL, and SLD Collaborations. To conclude, the outlook for future experiments is presented.
Current status of the computation of the neutral B-meson mixing amplitudes, with particular attention to the heavy-light meson decay constants, is reviewed. The values for these quantities, as well as for the coupling of the pion to the lowest doublet of heavy-light mesons, are given.
We currently live in the age of the CKM paradigm. The $3\times 3$ matrix that links $(d,\ s,\ b)$ quarks to $(u,\ c,\ t)$ in the charged current weak interaction, being complex and nominally with 18 parameters, can be accounted for by just 3 rotation angles and one $CP$ violating (CPV) phase, with unitarity and the CKM phases triumphantly tested at the B factories. But the CKM picture is unsatisfactory and has too many parameters. The main aim of Flavor Physics and $CP$ violation (FPCP) studies is the pursuit to uncover New Physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). Two highlights of LHC Run~1 pe…
The status of possible new-physics signals in B_s,d-meson mixing and decay is reviewed. In particular, it is emphasized that the recent LHCb results, that find no evidence for a non-standard phase in B_s-barB_s mixing, make a consistent explanation of the D0 data on the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry notoriously difficult. In order to clarify the inconclusive experimental situation, independent measurements of the semileptonic asymmetries are needed.
The leptonic mixing angle theta_13 is currently a high-priority topic in the field of neutrino physics, with five experiments under way, searching for neutrino oscillations induced by this angle. We review the phenomenology of theta_13 and discuss the information from present global oscillation data. A description of the upcoming reactor and accelerator experiments searching for a non-zero value of theta_13 is given, and we evaluate the sensitivity reach within the next few years.
We review the status and future prospects of calculations of B-meson decay constants and non-perturbative inputs relevant for the study of neutral B-meson mixing using lattice QCD techniques. We also discuss the Standard Model prediction for Br(B_s -> μ^+ μ^-) and Br(B_d -> μ^+ μ^-) using those results.
We review the current status of B-mixing observables and point out the crucial importance of a control of the hadronic uncertainties for ruling out or confirming hints of BSM physics. In addition we introduce a rating system for theory predictions for lifetimes and mixing observables, that classifies the quality of the corresponding SM values ranging from no star to ****
Measurements of various features of the fluxes of atmospheric and solar neutrinos have provided evidence for neutrino oscillations and therefore for neutrino masses and mixing. We review the phenomenology of neutrino oscillations in vacuum and in matter. We present the existing evidence from solar and atmospheric neutrinos as well as the results from laboratory searches, including the final status of the LSND experiment. We describe the theoretical inputs that are used to interpret the experimental results in terms of neutrino oscillations. We derive the allowed ranges for the mass and mixing …
