Chirality and current-driven dynamics of topologically nontrivial 360$^{\circ}$ domain walls (360DWs) in magnetic heterostructures (MHs) are systematically investigated. For MHs with normal substrates, the static 360DWs are Néel-type with no chirality. While for those with heavy-metal substrates, the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI) therein makes 360DWs prefer specific chirality. Under in-plane driving charge currents, as the direct result of "full-circle" topology a certain 360DW does not undergo the "Walker breakdown"-type process like a well-studied 180$^{\circ}$ domain wall as the current density increases. Alternatively, it keeps a fixed propagating mode (either steady-flow or precessional-flow, depending on the effective damping constant of the MH) until it collapses or changes to other types of solition when the current density becomes too high. Similarly, the field-like spin-orbit torque (SOT) has no effects on the dynamics of 360DWs, while the anti-damping SOT has. For both modes, modifications to the mobility of 360DWs by iDMI and anti-damping SOT are provided.
It is shown that chiral plasmons, characterized by a longitudinal magnetic moment accompanying the longitudinal charge plasmon, lead to electromagnetic near-fields that are also chiral. For twisted bilayer graphene, we estimate that the near field chirality of screened plasmons can be several orders of magnitude larger than that of the related circularly polarized light. The chirality also manifests itself in a deflection angle that is formed between the direction of the plasmon propagation and its Poynting vector. Twisted van der Waals heterostructures might thus provide a novel platform to p…
Fu and Kane have discovered that a topological insulator with induced s-wave superconductivity (gap $Δ_0$, Fermi velocity $v_{\rm F}$, Fermi energy $μ$) supports chiral Majorana modes propagating on the surface along the edge with a magnetic insulator. We show that the direction of motion of the Majorana fermions can be inverted by the counterflow of supercurrent, when the Cooper pair momentum along the boundary exceeds $Δ_0^2/μv_{\rm F}$. The chirality inversion is signaled by a doubling of the thermal conductance of a channel parallel to the supercurrent. Moreover, the inverted edge can tran…
We demonstrate the controlled generation and annihilation of (anti)skyrmions with tunable chirality in magnetic heterostructures by means of micromagnetic simulations. By making use of magnetic (anti)vortices in patterned ferromagnetic layer, we stabilize full lattices of (anti)skyrmions in an underlying skyrmionic thin film in a reproducible manner. The stability of the (anti)skyrmion depends on the polarization of the (anti)vortex, whereas their chirality is given by those of the (anti)vortices. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the core coupling between the (anti)vortices and (anti)skyrmions…
Investigating thermal transport in van der Waals heterostructure is of scientific interest and practical importance for their applications in a broad range. In this work, thermal conductivity of one-dimensional heterostructure consisting of carbon and boron nitride nanotubes is systematically investigated via molecular dynamics simulations. Thermal conductivity is found to have strong dependences on temperature, length and diameter. In addition, the axial strain and intensity of van der Waals interaction are demonstrated to be able to modulate thermal conductivity up to about 43% and 37%, resp…

Spin-momentum locking in topological insulators and materials with Rashba-type interactions is an extremely attractive feature for novel spintronic devices and is therefore under intense investigation. Significant efforts are underway to identify new material systems with spin-momentum locking, but also to create heterostructures with new spintronic functionalities. In the present study we address both subjects and investigate a van der Waals-type heterostructure consisting of the topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ and a single Se-Ta-Se triple-layer (TL) of H-type TaSe$_{2}$ grown by a nov…
A heterostructure consisting of a magnetic Weyl semimetal and a conventional superconductor exhibits an equilibrium current parallel to the superconductor interface and perpendicular to the magnetization. Analyzing a minimal model, which as a function of parameters may be in a trivial magnetic insulator phase, a Weyl semimetal phase, or a three-dimensional weak Chern insulator phase, we find that the equilibrium current is sensitive to the presence of surface states, such as the topological Fermi-arc states of the Weyl semimetal or the chiral surface states of the weak Chern insulator. While t…
The investigation of excitons in van-der-Waals heterostructures has led to profound insights into the interplay of crystal symmetries and fundamental effects of light-matter coupling. In particular, the polarization selection rules in undistorted, slightly twisted heterostructures of MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ were found to be connected with the Moiré superlattice. Here, we report the emergence of a significant degree of circular polarization of excitons in such a hetero-structure upon non-resonant driving with a linearly polarized laser. The effect is present at zero magnetic field, and sensibly reacts…

Array-patterned CoPd-based heterostructures are created through e-beam lithography and plasma pretreatment that induces oxidation with depth gradient in the CoPd alloy films, breaking the central symmetry of the structure. Effects on the magnetic properties of the follow-up hydrogenation of the thin film are observed via magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy. The system exhibits strong vertical and lateral antiferromagnetic coupling in the perpendicular component between the areas with and without plasma pretreatment, and asymmetric domain-wall propagation in the plasma-pretreated areas during …
The interplay between superconductivity, magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling can lead to the realization of non--trivial topological phases. Recent experiments have found signatures of such phases in magnetic nanoflakes formed by nanostructures coupled to a superconducting substrate. These heterostructures comprise a topologically non-trivial region surrounded by a trivial one due to the finite magnetic exchange field induced by the magnetic nanoflake. The analysis of the topological phase diagram of such a system shows that a similar phase separation occurs by tuning the chemical potential…
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral nanoscale spin textures which are usually induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Recently, magnetic skyrmions have been observed in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic materials, such as Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$. The electric control of skyrmions is important for their potential application in low-power memory technologies. Here, we predict that DMI and magnetic skyrmions in a Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ monolayer can be controlled by ferroelectric polarization of an adjacent 2D vdW ferroelectric In$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. Based on density functional theor…
Twisting in bilayers introduces structural chirality with two enantiomers, i.e., left- and right-hand bilayers, depending on the oriented twist angle. The interplay between this global chirality and additional degrees of freedom, such as magnetic ordering and the local octahedral chirality arising from the geometry of the bonds, can yield striking phenomena. In this work, we focus on collinear antiferromagnetic CrI$_3$ twisted homo-bilayers, which are characterized by a staggered octahedral chirality in each monolayer. Using symmetry analysis, density functional theory and tight-binding model …
Magnetic vortices are characterized by the senses of in-plane magnetization chirality and by the polarity of the vortex core. The electrical control of vortex polarity and chirality is highly demanded not only for fundamental understanding on spin dynamics in nano-disks under different circumstances, but also for technological applications, such as magnetic non-volatile memories and spin torque oscillators for neuromorphic computing. Here we report a novel approach that enables one to electrically control both the vortex chirality and polarity with low energy consumption. Thorough micromagneti…
Even if Weyl semimetals are characterized by quasiparticles with well-defined chirality, exploiting this experimentally is severely hampered by Weyl lattice-fermions coming in pairs with opposite chirality, typically causing the net chirality picked up by experimental probes to vanish. Here we show this issue can be circumvented in a controlled manner when both time-reversal- and inversion- symmetry are broken. To this end, we investigate chirality-disbalance in the carbide family RMC$_2$ (R a rare-earth and M a transition metal), showing several members to be Weyl semimetals. Using the noncen…
