We present the study of a Lyman limit system (LLS) at $z_{\rm abs}$ = 1.5441 towards quasar J134122.50+185213.9 observed with VLT X-shooter. This is a very peculiar system with strong C I absorption seen associated with a neutral hydrogen column density of log $N$(H I) (cm$^{-2}$) = 18.10, too small to shield the gas from any external UV flux. The low ionization absorption lines exhibit a simple kinematic structure consistent with a single component. Using CLOUDY models to correct for ionization, we find that the ionization parameter of the gas is in the range $-$ 4.5 $<$ log $U$ $<$ $-$4.2 and the gas density $-$1.5 $<$ log $n$(H) (cm$^{-3}$) $<$ $-$1.2. The models suggest that carbon is overabundant relative to iron, [C/Fe] $>$ +2.2 at [Fe/H] $\sim$ $-$1.6. Such a metal abundance pattern is reminiscent of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars detected in the Galaxy halo. Metal enrichment by the first generation of supernovae provides a plausible explanation for the inferred abundance pattern in this system.
We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) detections of atomic carbon line and dust continuum emission in two UV-luminous galaxies at redshift 6. The far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of these galaxies are substantially lower than similar starbursts at later cosmic epochs, indicating an evolution in the dust properties with redshift, in agreement with the evolution seen in ultraviolet (UV) attenuation by dust. The [CII] to FIR ratios are found to be higher than at low redshift showing that [CII] should be readily detectable by ALMA within the reionization epoch. One of the two galaxies sh…
We report new HST COS and STIS spectroscopy of a star-forming region (~100 solar masses/year) in the center of the X-ray cluster RXJ1532.9+3021 (z=0.362), to follow-up the CLASH team discovery of luminous UV filaments and knots in the central massive galaxy. We detect broad (~500 km/s) Lyman alpha emission lines with extraordinarily high equivalent width (EQW~200 Angstroms) and somewhat less broadened H-alpha (~220 km/s). Emission lines of N V and O VI are not detected, which constrains the rate at which gas cools through temperatures of 10^6 K to be less than about 10 solar masses/year. The C…
In this paper, we study the effects of a recent drop in star formation rate (SFR) on the spectra of epoch of reionization (EoR) galaxies, and the resulting degeneracy with the spectral features produced by extreme Lyman continuum leakage. In order to study these effects in the wavelength range relevant for the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we utilize synthetic spectra of simulated EoR galaxies from cosmological simulations together with synthetic spectra of partially quenched mock galaxies. We find that rapid declines in the SFR of EoR galaxies could seriously affect the applicab…
Recent observations of the Lyman-alpha forest show large-scale spatial variations in the intergalactic Lyman-alpha opacity that grow rapidly with redshift at z>5, far in excess of expectations from empirically motivated models. Previous studies have attempted to explain this excess with spatial fluctuations in the ionizing background, but found that this required either extremely rare sources or problematically low values for the mean free path of ionizing photons. Here we report that much -- or potentially all -- of the observed excess likely arises from residual spatial variations in tempera…

Several decades of observations and discoveries have shown that high-redshift AGN and massive galaxies are often surrounded by giant Lyman-alpha nebulae extending in some cases up to 500 kpc in size. In this review, I discuss the properties of the such nebulae discovered at z>2 and their connection with gas flows in and around the galaxies and their halos. In particular, I show how current observations are used to constrain the physical properties and origin of the emitting gas in terms of the Lyman-alpha photon production processes and kinematical signatures. These studies suggest that recomb…
`Direct collapse black holes' (DCBHs) provide possible seeds for supermassive black holes that exist at redshifts as high as z~7. We study Lyman Alpha (Lya) radiative transfer through simplified representations of the DCBH-scenario. We find that gravitational heating of the collapsing cloud gives rise to a Lya cooling luminosity of up to ~ 1e38(M_gas/1e6 Msun)^2 erg/s. The Lya production rate can be significantly larger during the final stages of collapse, but collisional deexcitation efficiently suppresses the emerging Lya flux. Photoionization by a central source boosts the Lya luminosity to…
We report the first detection of molecular gas beyond redshift 7. The molecular gas is associated with the host galaxy of the quasar candidate PSO J145.5964+19.3565 and its companion PSO J145.5964+19.3565N separated by 20.7 kpc. The molecular gas of both companions is detected in two rotational transition lines of carbon monoxide, CO(6-5) and CO(7-6). We also detected the Lyman-alpha line of PSO J145.5964+19.3565 at z=7.08. The Lyman-alpha line emission is extended and might represent the blended emission of two different sources at a separation of <5 kpc. The detected CO and Lyman-alpha emiss…
We present the measured gas-phase metal column densities in 155 sub-damped Lyman alpha systems (subDLAs) with the aim to investigate the contribution of subDLAs to the chemical evolution of the Universe. The sample was identified within the absorber-blind XQ-100 quasar spectroscopic survey over the redshift range 2.4<=z<=4.3. Using all available column densities of the ionic species investigated (mainly CIV, SiII, MgII, SiIV, AlII, FeII, CII, and OI; in order of decreasing detection frequency), we estimate the ionization-corrected gas-phase metallicity of each system using Markov Chain Monte C…
We present a detailed analysis of three extremely strong intervening DLAs (log N(HI)>=21.7) observed towards quasars with VLT/UVES. We measure overall metallicities of [Zn/H]~-1.2, -1.3 and -0.7 at respectively zabs=2.34 towards SDSS J2140-0321 (log N(HI) = 22.4+/-0.1), zabs=3.35 towards SDSS J1456+1609 (log N(HI) = 21.7+/-0.1) and zabs=2.25 towards SDSS J0154+1935 (log N(HI) = 21.75+/-0.15). We detect H2 towards J2140-0321 (log N(H2) = 20.13+/-0.07) and J1456+1609 (log N(H2) = 17.10+/-0.09) and argue for a tentative detection towards J0154+1935. Absorption from the excited fine-structure leve…
Allowing for enhanced Ly$α$ photon line emission from Population III dominated stellar systems in the first forming galaxies, we show the 21-cm cosmic dawn signal at $10<z<30$ may substantially differ from standard scenarios. Energy transfer by Ly$α$ photons emerging from galaxies may heat intergalactic gas if HII regions within galaxies are recombination bound, or cool the gas faster than by adiabatic expansion if reddened by winds internal to the haloes. In some cases, differential 21-cm antenna temperatures near $-500$ mK may be achieved at $15<z<25$, similar to the signature detected by th…
Absorption by carbon monoxide in the spectrum of quasar SDSS J000015.16+004833.2 is investigated in order to derive a constraint on the temporal variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio, mu. The spectrum was recorded using VLT/UVES, and it was partially corrected for long-range wavelength scale distortions using the supercalibration technique. Eight vibrational CO singlet-singlet bands belonging to the A-X electronic absorption system, and the perturbing d3-X(5, 0) singlet-triplet band are detected in the damped Lyman-alpha system at z =2.52. The spectra are modelled using a comprehensiv…
We present the first results from our KODIAQ Z survey aimed to determine the metallicity distribution and physical properties of the z>2 partial and full Lyman limit systems (pLLSs and LLSs; 16.2<log N(HI)<19), which are probed of the interface regions between the intergalactic medium (IGM) and galaxies. We study 31 HI-selected pLLSs and LLSs at 2.3<z<3.3 observed with Keck/HIRES in absorption against background QSOs. We compare the column densities of metal-ions to HI and use photoionization models to assess the metallicity. The metallicity distribution of the pLLSs/LLSs at 2.3<z<3.3 is consi…
We measured metallicities for 33 z=3.4-4.2 absorption line systems drawn from a sample of H I-selected-Lyman limit systems (LLSs) identified in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasar spectra and stratified based on metal line features. We obtained higher-resolution spectra with the Keck Echellette Spectrograph and Imager, selecting targets according to our stratification scheme in an effort to fully sample the LLS population metallicity distribution. We established a plausible range of H I column densities and measured column densities (or limits) for ions of carbon, silicon, and aluminum, fin…
The dynamical impact of Lyman-alpha (Lyα) radiation pressure on galaxy formation depends on the rate and duration of momentum transfer between Lyα photons and neutral hydrogen gas. Although photon trapping has the potential to multiply the effective force, ionizing radiation from stellar sources may relieve the Lyα pressure before appreciably affecting the kinematics of the host galaxy or efficiently coupling Lyα photons to the outflow. We present self-consistent Lyα radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of high-$z$ galaxy environments by coupling the Cosmic Lyα Transfer code (COLT) with spheric…
We report the discovery and analysis of the most metal-poor damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system currently known, based on observations made with the Keck HIRES spectrograph. The metal paucity of this system has only permitted the determination of three element abundances: [C/H] = -3.43 +/- 0.06, [O/H] = -3.05 +/- 0.05, and [Si/H] = -3.21 +/- 0.05, as well as an upper limit on the abundance of iron: [Fe/H] < -2.81. This DLA is among the most carbon-poor environment currently known with detectable metals. By comparing the abundance pattern of this DLA to detailed models of metal-free nucleosynthesis…
Signs of damping wing absorption attenuating the Lyman-$α$ emission line of the first known $z \sim 7$ quasar, ULAS J1120+0641, recently provided exciting evidence of a significantly neutral IGM. This long-awaited signature of reionization was inferred, in part, from a deficit of flux in the quasar's Lyman-$α$ emission line based on predictions from a composite of lower-redshift quasars. The composite sample was chosen based on its C IV emission line properties; however, as the original study by Mortlock et al. noted, the composite contained a slight velocity offset in C IV compared to ULAS J1…
The upcoming WEAVE-QSO survey will target a high density of quasars over a large area, enabling the reconstruction of the 3D density field through Lyman-$α$ tomography over unprecedented volumes smoothed on intermediate scales ($\approx$ 16 Mpc/$h$). We produce mocks of the Lyman-$α$ forest using LyMAS, and reconstruct the 3D density field between sightlines through Wiener filtering in a configuration compatible with the future WEAVE-QSO observations. The fidelity of the reconstruction is assessed by measuring one- and two-point statistics from the distribution of critical points in the cosmic…
Molecular gas constitutes the dominant mass component of protoplanetary discs. To date, these sources have not been studied comprehensively at the longest far-infrared and shortest submillimetre wavelengths. This paper presents Herschel SPIRE FTS spectroscopic observations toward 18 protoplanetary discs, covering the entire 450-1540 GHz (666-195 $μ$m) range at R~400-1300. The spectra reveal clear detections of the dust continuum and, in six targets, a significant amount of spectral line emission primarily attributable to $^{12}$CO rotational lines. Other targets exhibit little to no detectable…
