The propagation of radio waves from distant compact radio sources through turbulent interstellar plasma in our Galaxy causes these sources to twinkle, a phenomenon called interstellar scintillation. Such scintillations are a unique probe of the micro-arcsecond structure of radio sources as well as of the sub-AU-scale structure of the Galactic interstellar medium. Weak scintillations (i.e. an intensity modulation of a few percent) on timescales of a few days or longer are commonly seen at centimetre wavelengths and are thought to result from the line-of-sight integrated turbulence in the interstellar plasma of the Milky Way. So far, only three sources were known that show more extreme variations, with modulations at the level of some dozen percent on timescales shorter than an hour. This requires propagation through nearby (d <~10 pc) anomalously dense (n_e ~10^2 cm^-3) plasma clouds. Here we report the discovery with Apertif of a source (J1402+5347) showing extreme (~50%) and rapid variations on a timescale of just 6.5 minutes in the decimetre band (1.4 GHz). The spatial scintillation pattern is highly anisotropic, with a semi-minor axis of about 20,000 km. The canonical theory of refractive scintillation constrains the scattering plasma to be within the Oort cloud. The sightline to J1402+5347, however, passes unusually close to the B3 star Alkaid (eta UMa) at a distance of 32 pc. If the scintillations are associated with Alkaid, then the angular size of J1402+5347 along the minor axis of the scintels must be smaller than ~10 micro arcsec yielding an apparent brightness temperature for an isotropic source of >~ 10^ 14K. }
Observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array revealed intra-hour variations in the radio source PKS B1322-110 (Bignall et al. 2019). As part of an optical follow-up, we obtained Gemini Halpha and Halpha continuum (HalphaC) images of the PKS B1322-110 field. A robust 19-sigma detection of PKS B1322-110 in the Halpha-HalphaC image prompted us to obtain the first optical spectrum of PKS B1322-110. With the Gemini spectrum we determine that PKS B1322-110 is a flat-spectrum radio quasar at a redshift of z=3.007 +/- 0.002. The apparent flux detected in the Halpha filter is likely to origi…
For 3 radio-loud $γ$-ray detected Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 ($γ$-ray NLSy1) galaxies, we report optical variability on intra-night and/or week-like time scales, based on five $\geq$ 3 hours long monitoring sessions for each galaxy. The radio-loudness factors (R$_{1.4 GHz}$) for these galaxies, namely 1H 0323$+$342 (z = 0.0629), PKS J1222$+$0413 (z = 0.966) and PKS J1505$+$0326 (z = 0.408) are $\sim$318, $\sim$1534 and $\sim$3364 at 1.4 GHz, respectively. For the most distant $γ$-ray NLSy1, PKS J1222$+$0413, Intra-Night Optical Variability (INOV) characterisation is presented for the first time. Th…
The bright radio source S5 0716+714, that is usually classified as BL Lac object, is one of the most intensively studied. S5 0716+714 demonstrates extremely peculiar properties such as the shortest time-scale of optical and polarimetric variations observed in blazars. In given paper, the results of 9-hour polarimetric monitoring of S5 0716+714 with the $\sim$70-second resolution, carried out by the 6-m telescope BTA of SAO RAS, are presented. The observation data analysis reveals the variability both in total and polarized light on the 1-1.5-hour time-scale. Since polarization is generated by …
We present the results from an Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder search for radio variables on timescales of hours. We conducted an untargeted search over a 30 deg$^2$ field, with multiple 10-hour observations separated by days to months, at a central frequency of 945 MHz. We discovered six rapid scintillators from 15-minute model-subtracted images with sensitivity of $\sim 200\,μ$Jy/beam; two of them are extreme intra-hour variables with modulation indices up to $\sim 40\%$ and timescales as short as tens of minutes. Five of the variables are in a linear arrangement on the sky with…

S5 0716+714 demonstrates extremely peculiar properties, such as the shortest time-scale of optical and polarimetric variations observed in blazars. In the given talk, we present the results of 8-h polarimetric monitoring of S5 0716+714 with a $\sim70$-sec resolution carried out using the 6-m telescope BTA of the SAO RAS. The observation data analysis reveals the variability both in total and polarized light on the 1.5-hour timescales that specifies the size of the…
In a systematic program to characterise the intra-night optical variability (INOV) of different classes of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1s), we report here the first comparative INOV study of NLSy1 sets detected in the X-ray and $γ$-ray bands. Our sample consists of 18 sources detected in X-ray but not in $γ$-rays (hereafter x$\textunderscore$NLSy1s) and 7 sources detected in $γ$-rays (hereafter g$\textunderscore$NLSy1s), out of which 5 are detected also in X-rays. We have monitored these two sets of NLSy1s, respectively, in 24 and 21 sessions of a minimum of 3 hours duration each. The …
Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) variability can be used to study the physics of the region in the vicinity of the central black hole. In this paper, we investigated intra-night optical variability of AGN in the COSMOS field in order to understand the AGN instability at the smallest scale. Observations were performed using the KMTNet on three separate nights for 2.5-5 hour at a cadence of 20-30 min. We find that the observation enables the detection of the short-term variability as small as $\sim$ 0.02 and 0.1 mag for $R \sim$ 18 and 20 mag sources, respectively. Using four selection methods (X-r…
We report the first attempt to systematically characterise intra-night optical variability (INOV) of the rare and enigmatic subset of Narrow-Line Seyfert1 galaxies (NLSy1s), which is marked by detection in the $γ$-ray band and is therefore endowed with Doppler boosted relativistic jets, like blazars. However, the central engines in these two types of AGN are thought to operate in different regimes of accretion rate. Our INOV search in a fairly large and unbiased sample of 15 $γ$-ray NLSy1s was conducted in 36 monitoring sessions, each lasting $\geq$ 3 hrs. In our analysis, special care has bee…
We present our observations of the optical intra-day variability (IDV) in $γ$-ray BL Lac object Mrk 501. The observations were run with the 1.02 m and 2.4 m optical telescopes at Yunnan Observatories from 2005 April to 2012 May. The light curve at the $R$ band on 2010 May 15 passes both variability tests (the $F$ test and the ANOVA test). A flare within the light curve on 2010 May 15 has a magnitude change $Δm = 0.03 \pm 0.005_{\rm{stat}} \pm 0.007_{\rm{sys}}$ mag, \textbf{a darkening timescale of $τ_{\rm{d}}=$ 26.7 minutes}, and an amplitude of IDV $Amp=2.9\% \pm0.7\%$. A decline \textbf{desc…
We present results based on the observations of the blazar 3C 66A from 2005 November 06 to 2016 February 14 in the BVR and I broadbands using 1.2m telescope of the Mt. Abu InfraRed Observatory (MIRO). The source was observed on 160 nights out of which on 89 nights it was monitored for more than 1 hr to check for the presence of any intra-day variability (IDV). The blazar 3C 66A exhibited significant variations in the optical flux on short and long term time scales. However, unlike highly variable S5 0716+71, it showed IDV duty cycle of about 8% only. Our statistical studies suggest the IDV tim…
The optical microvariability and spectral changes of the BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714
