This article summarises three searches for diboson resonances in the all-hadronic final state using data collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{\rm{s}}=13$ TeV with the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The boson decay products are contained in one large-radius jet, resulting in dijet final states which are resolved using jet substructure techniques. The analyses presented use 2.3, 35.9 and 77.3 inverse femtobarns of data collected between 2015 and 2017. These include the first search for diboson resonances using data collected at a 13 TeV collision energy, the introduction of a new algorithm to tag vector bosons in the context of analyzing the data collected in 2016, and the development of a novel multidimensional fit improving on the sensitivity of the previous search method with up to $30\%$. The results presented here are the most sensitive to date of diboson resonance searches in the dijet final state. An emphasis on improvements in technique for vector boson tagging is made.
It is here presented the diboson production cross section measured by the CMS collaboration in $pp$ collisions data at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV. $W γ$ and $Z γ$ results from 2010 analyses (36 pb$^{-1}$) are presented together with 2011 first measurements of $WW$, $WZ$ and $ZZ$ final states obtained using 1.1 fb$^{-1}$. Results obtained with 2010 data are also interpreted in term of anomalous triple gauge couplings.
I present an overview of the measurements of the di-boson (WW, WZ, ZZ, Wγ, and Zγ) production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV. The measurements are based on 36 pb^-1 and 1.1 fb^-1 of data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The vector bosons W and Z are reconstructed in purely leptonic decays. The measured cross sections are compared with the Standard Model expectations calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are derived.
A list of searches is presented for massive resonances decaying to WW, WZ, ZZ, WH, ZH and HH boson pairs in proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The data are taken at centre-of-mass energies of 13TeV, corresponding to respective integrated luminosities of 12.9/fb(ICHEP) and up to 35.9/fb. The results are interpreted in the context of heavy vector triplet and singlet models that mimic properties of composite-Higgs models predicting W' and Z' bosons decaying to WZ, WW, WH, and ZH bosons. A model with a bulk graviton that decays into WW and ZZ is also considere…
This paper presents an overview of the diboson production cross-section measurements and constraints on anomalous triple-gauge boson couplings performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations using proton-proton collisions produced at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt{s} = 7 and 8 TeV at LHC. Results for all combinations of W, Z and γ gauge bosons (excluding γγ) are presented with emphasis on the new WZ and ZZ production cross sections measured by ATLAS at sqrt{s} = 8 TeV and on the new constraints on anomalous triple-gauge couplings set by CMS in the WW and Zγ modes.
In this contribution, I have outlined recent precision measurements of the standard model (SM) multiboson production at CMS. A study of diboson production at 5 TeV constitutes an important probe of the SM at a new energy, and the data favour NNLO predictions obtained by MATRIX. A study of WZ production at 13 TeV constitutes the most comprehensive study of WZ production to date, containing inclusive and differential cross section measurements, charge asymmetry measurements, constraints on the LHC proton parton distribution functions, and constraints on anomalous values of the WWZ trilinear gaug…
A general review of the latest results about single and double vector boson production in the multipurpose experiments at LHC (ATLAS and CMS) and at Tevatron (CDF and D0) will be presented. The review will focus on boson production, while a more detailed report about W and Z properties can be found elsewhere. Only leptonic decays into electrons and muons will be considered.
An overview of the boosted top production analyses using data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at $\sqrt{s}=$ 8 TeV and 13 TeV of proton-proton collisions at the LHC is presented. These analyses use techniques for the reconstruction of boosted objects to measure the production of top quarks at high transverse momenta. The measurements are optimized for the different final states and for different ranges of the transverse momenta of the particles involved, improving on measurements with traditional objects reconstruction based on the combination of resolved objects.
Most recent measurements of properties of $W$ and $Z$ gauge bosons at hadron colliders are presented. The measurements were performed by ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb collaborations with proton-proton collisions at the LHC and by CDF and D0 collaborations with proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. Center-of-mass energy was 7 TeV and 1.96 TeV at the LHC and Tevatron respectively. Integrated luminosity ranges from 35 pb$^{-1}$ to 1.02 pb$^{-1}$ for LHC and from 0.2 fb$^{-1}$ to 7.1 fb$^{-1}$ for Tevatron.
The ATLAS excess in fat jet pair production is kinematically compatible with the decay of a heavy resonance into two gauge bosons plus an extra particle. This hypothesis would explain the absence of such a large excess in the analogous CMS analysis of fat dijet final states, as well as the negative results of diboson resonance searches in the semi-leptonic decay modes. If the extra particle is the Higgs boson, this hypothesis might also explain -statistical fluctuations aside- why the CMS search for WH resonances in the semi-leptonic channel finds some excess while in the fully hadronic one it…
This review article summarizes results on the production cross section measurements of electroweak boson pairs ($WW$, $WZ$, $ZZ$, $Wγ$ and $Zγ$) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ \TeV. The two general-purpose detectors at the LHC, ATLAS and CMS, recorded an integrated luminosity of $5fb^{-1}$ in 2011, which offered the possibility to study the properties of diboson production to high precision. These measurements test predictions of the Standard Model (SM) in a new energy regime and are crucial for the understanding and the measure…
We present the first search for the standard model Higgs boson (H) produced with large transverse momentum ($\mathrm{p_{T}}$) via gluon fusion and decaying to a bottom quark-antiquark pair ($\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$). The search is performed using a data set of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{\mathrm{-1}}$. A highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs boson decaying to $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ is reconstructed as a single, large radius jet and is identified using jet substructure and dedicated b tagging te…
New particles at the TeV-scale may have sizeable decay rates into boosted Higgs bosons or other heavy scalars. Here, we investigate the possibility of identifying such processes when the Higgs/scalar subsequently decays into a pair of W bosons, constituting a highly distinctive "diboson-jet." These can appear as a simple dilepton (plus MET) configuration, as a two-prong jet with an embedded lepton, or as a four-prong jet. We study jet substructure methods to discriminate these objects from their dominant backgrounds. We then demonstrate the use of these techniques in the search for a heavy spi…
Narrow resonances decaying into $WW$, $WZ$ or $ZZ$ boson pairs are searched for in 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider from 2015 to 2018. The diboson system is reconstructed using pairs of high transverse momentum, large-radius jets. These jets are built from a combination of calorimeter- and tracker-inputs compatible with the hadronic decay of a boosted $W$ or $Z$ boson, using jet mass and substructure properties. The search is performed for diboson resonances with masses gr…
This review covers results of searches for new elementary particles that decay into boson pairs (dibosons), performed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at 7-, 8-, and 13-TeV center-of-mass energy until the year 2017. The available experimental results of the analysis of final states including most of the possible two-object combinations of W and Z bosons, photons, Higgs bosons, and gluons place stringent constraints on a variety of theoretical ideas that extend the standard model, pushing into the multi-TeV region the s…
I summarize an extensive ATLAS and CMS electroweak physics program that involves a variety of single boson, diboson, triboson, and vector boson scattering measurements. The relevance of these studies to our understanding of the electroweak sector and electroweak symmetry breaking is emphasized. I describe the recent results and prospects for future measurements.
An overview of the searches for new heavy resonances decaying to standard model (SM) bosons at the TeV mass scale is presented. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity up to about $36\; \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ recorded in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The bosons coming from the resonance decay can be W, Z, or the SM Higgs. For very heavy resonances, bosons are produced with momentum considerably higher than their mass, modifying in a very appreciable way the event topology. The quarks originated f…
The first measurements of diboson production cross sections in proton-proton interactions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV are reported. They are based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb$^{-1}$. Events with two, three, or four charged light leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state are analyzed. The WW, WZ, and ZZ total cross sections are measured as $σ_\mathrm{WW} =$ 37.0 $^{+5.5}_{-5.2}$ (stat) $^{+2.7}_{-2.6}$ (syst) pb, $σ_\mathrm{WZ} =$ 6.4 $^{+2.5}_{-2.1}$ (stat) $^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$ (syst) pb, and $σ_\mathrm{ZZ…
We present a systematic interpretation of vector boson scattering (VBS) and diboson measurements from the LHC in the framework of the dimension-six Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We consider all available measurements of VBS fiducial cross-sections and differential distributions from ATLAS and CMS, in most cases based on the full Run II luminosity, and use them to constrain 16 independent directions in the dimension-six EFT parameter space. Compared to the diboson measurements, we find that VBS provides complementary information on several of the operators relevant for the desc…
In view of the recent diboson resonant excesses reported by both ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, we suggest that a new weak singlet pseudo-scalar particle, $η_W$, may decay into two weak bosons while being produced in gluon fusion at the LHC. The couplings to the gauge bosons can arise from a Wess-Zumino-Witten anomaly term and thus we study an effective model based on the anomaly term as a well motivated phenomenological model. In models where the pseudo-scalar arises as a composite state, the coefficients of the anomalous couplings can be related to the fermion components of the underlying dyn…
ATLAS and CMS observe deviations from the expected background in diboson invariant mass searches of new resonances around 2 TeV. We provide a general analysis of the results in terms of spin-one resonances and find that Fermi scale composite dynamics can be the culprit. The analysis and methodology can be employed for future searches at run two of the Large Hadron Collider.
We perform a statistical combination of the ATLAS and CMS results for the search of a heavy resonance decaying to a pair of vector bosons with the $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV datasets collected at the LHC. We take into account six searches in hadronic and semileptonic final states carried out by the two collaborations. We consider only public information provided by ATLAS and CMS in the HEPDATA database and in papers published in refereed journals. We interpret the combined results within the context of a few benchmark new physics models, such as models predicting the existence of a {\ensuremath{\mathrm{…
A search is performed for narrow resonances decaying into $WW$, $WZ$, or $ZZ$ boson pairs using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Diboson resonances with masses in the range from 1.3 to 3.0 TeV are sought after using the invariant mass distribution of dijets where both jets are tagged as a boson jet, compatible with a highly boosted $W$ or $Z$ boson decaying to quarks, using jet mass and substructure properties. The largest deviation from a smoothly falling background in…
The CMS Open Data project offers new opportunities to measure cross sections of standard model (SM) processes which have not been probed so far. In this work, we evaluate the challenges and the opportunities of the CMS Open Data project in the view of cross-section measurements. In particular, we reevaluate SM cross sections of the production of W bosons, Z bosons, top-quark pairs and WZ dibosons in several decay channels at a center of mass energy of 8 TeV with a corresponding integrated luminosity of 1.8 fb-1. Those cross sections have been previously measured by the ATLAS and CMS collaborat…
The ATLAS and CMS collaborations have recently released significant new data on Higgs and diboson production in LHC Run 2. Measurements of Higgs properties have improved in many channels, while kinematic information for $h \to γγ$ and $h \to ZZ$ can now be more accurately incorporated in fits using the STXS method, and $W^+ W^-$ diboson production at high $p_T$ gives new sensitivity to deviations from the Standard Model. We have performed an updated global fit to precision electroweak data, $W^+W^-$ measurements at LEP, and Higgs and diboson data from Runs 1 and 2 of the LHC in the framework o…
A search for new resonances decaying to WW, ZZ, or WZ is presented. Final states are considered in which one of the vector bosons decays leptonically and the other hadronically. Results are based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns recorded in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Techniques aiming at identifying jet substructures are used to analyze signal events in which the hadronization products from the decay of highly boosted W or Z bosons are contained within a single reconstructed jet. Upper limits on…
A search for heavy resonances decaying to a pair of Z bosons is performed using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Events are selected by requiring two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons), consistent with the decay of a Z boson, and large missing transverse momentum, which is interpreted as arising from the decay of a second Z boson to two neutrinos. The analysis uses data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The hypothesis of a spin-2 bulk graviton (X) decaying to a pair of Z …
The ATLAS collaboration (and also CMS) has recently reported an excess over Standard Model expectations for gauge boson pair production in the invariant mass region $1.8-2.2$ TeV. In the light of these results, we argue that such signal might be the first manifestation of the production and further decay of a heavy CP-even Higgs resulting from a type-I Two Higgs Doublet Model. We demonstrate that in the presence of colored vector-like fermions, its gluon fusion production cross-section is strongly enhanced, with the enhancement depending on the color representation of the new fermion states. O…
Boosted objects - particles whose transverse momentum is greater than twice their mass - are becoming increasingly important as the LHC continues to explore energies in the TeV range. The sensitivity of searches for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model depends critically on the efficient reconstruction and identification (tagging) of their unique detector signatures. This contribution provides a review of searches for new physics carried out by the ATLAS and CMS experiments that rely on the reconstruction and identification of boosted top quarks as well as boosted $W$, $Z$ and Higgs bosons.…
Based on an $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$ effective theory framework (aka $G221$ models), we investigate a leptophobic $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{B-L}$ model, in which the right-handed $W^\prime$ boson has the mass of around 2 TeV, and predominantly couples to the standard model quarks and the gauge-Higgs sector. This model could explain the resonant excesses near 2 TeV reported by the ATLAS collaboration in the $WZ$ production decaying into hadronic final states, and by the CMS collaboration in the $Wh$ channel decaying into $b\bar{b}\ellν$ and dijet final state. After imposing t…
We introduce the `stealth bosons' $S$, light boosted particles with a decay $S \to AA \to q \bar q q \bar q$ into two daughter bosons $A$, which subsequently decay into four quarks that are reconstructed as a single fat jet. Variables that measure the two-pronged structure of fat jets, which are used for diboson resonance searches in hadronic or semi-leptonic final states, classify the jets produced in stealth boson decays as QCD-like - actually, for these variables they may seem more background-like than the QCD background itself. The number of tracks in those jets can also be, on average, mu…
The production at the LHC of boosted top quarks (top quarks with a transverse momentum that greatly exceeds their rest mass) is a promising process to search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model. In this contribution several examples are discussed of new techniques to reconstruct and identify (tag) the collimated decay topology of the boosted hadronic decays of top quarks. Boosted top reconstruction techniques have been utilized in searches for new physical phenomena. An overview is given of searches by ATLAS, CDF and CMS for heavy new particles decaying into a top and an anti-top quark, ve…
A number of LHC resonance search channels display an excess in the invariant mass region of 1.8 - 2.0 TeV. Among them is a $3.4\,σ$ excess in the fully hadronic decay of a pair of Standard Model electroweak gauge bosons, in addition to potential signals in the $HW$ and dijet final states. We perform a model-independent cross-section fit to the results of all ATLAS and CMS searches sensitive to these final states. We then interpret these results in the context of the Left-Right Symmetric Model, based on the extended gauge group $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)'$, and show that a heavy right-ha…
The WZ associated diboson production is studied by measuring both inclusive cross section and, for the first time, the ratio between the $W^-Z$ and the $W^+Z$ cross sections. The measurements are performed using data samples of proton-proton collisions collected during the years 2011 and 2012, at 7 and 8 TeV of centre-of-mass energies, respectively, by the CMS experiment at the LHC, updating the 7 TeV cross section measurement available in CMS, and presenting the new cross section measurement in CMS at 8 TeV. The data sample used for the 7 TeV measurements correspond to an integrated luminosit…
This Letter presents a search for new physics manifested as anomalous triple gauge boson couplings in WW and WZ diboson production in proton-proton collisions. The search is performed using events containing a W boson that decays leptonically and a W or Z boson whose decay products are merged into a single reconstructed jet. The data, collected at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19 inverse femtobarns. No evidence for anomalous triple gauge couplings is found and the following 95% confidence level limits are set on their values: lambda…
A search for central exclusive production of top quark pairs ($\mathrm{t}\bar{\mathrm{t}}$) is presented using collision data collected by CMS and the CMS-TOTEM Precision Proton Spectrometer in 2017. A data-driven method to estimate the background from coincidences of inclusive events and pileup protons is described, as well as the development of a Boosted Decision Tree classifier to separate the exclusive $\mathrm{t}\bar{\mathrm{t}}$ signal from the inclusive $\mathrm{t}\bar{\mathrm{t}}$ background. The first-ever upper limits on the cross section of exclusive $\mathrm{t}\bar{\mathrm{t}}$ are…
We present a search for single production of heavy vector-like quarks (VLQs), carried out by the CMS collaboration analyzing LHC pp collisions at 13 TeV. The vector like quark is a massive top quark partner that is searched for in a mass range between 0.7 and 1.7 TeV and a width between $<$1\% and 30\%. Single production can be dominant over pair production, depending on the mass of the new quark. The search is performed in a variety of final states including boosted topologies that can increase the sensitivity of the analysis.
These proceedings present measurements from ATLAS and CMS using proton-proton collisions with center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider that are sensitive to interactions between electroweak gauge bosons. Included analyses sensitive to triple gauge couplings are electroweak Z production and many diboson processes ($W^+W^-$, $W^{\pm}Z$, $ZZ$, $W^{\pm}γ$, and $Zγ$). In addition, $γγ\rightarrow W^+W^-$ production, $WVγ$ production, where $V=W,Z$, and $W^{\pm}W^{\pm}jj$ production are presented as probes of quartic gauge couplings.
Results from searches for new particles with enhanced couplings to third-generation quarks are presented. They are based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment. The signatures include single and pair production of vector-like quarks and heavy resonances decaying to third-generation quarks. A wide range of final states, from multi-leptonic to entirely hadronic is covered. Jet substructure techniques are employed to identify highly boosted heavy standard model particles in their hadronic decay modes.

We describe a novel application of the end-to-end deep learning technique to the task of discriminating top quark-initiated jets from those originating from the hadronization of a light quark or a gluon. The end-to-end deep learning technique combines deep learning algorithms and low-level detector representation of the high-energy collision event. In this study, we use low-level detector information from the simulated CMS Open Data samples to construct the top jet classifiers. To optimize classifier performance we progressively add low-level information from the CMS tracking detector, includi…
Diboson resonance with mass of $1.8-2$ TeV is reported successively by CMS and ATLAS experiments in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. We investigate the potentiality of Higgs singlet as the TeV resonance. The challenges of low production cross section and high width for a fundamental scalar could be got over by three factors: (1) larger Yukawa couplings, (2) larger number of heavy quarks and (3) smaller mixing angle with standard model Higgs. We find that the required factors could be realized in the framework of two vector-like triplet quarks (VLTQs) and the resulting production c…
The classic searches for supersymmetry have not given any strong indication for new physics. Therefore CMS is designing dedicated searches to target the more difficult and specific supersymmetry scenarios. This contribution present three such recent searches based on 13 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded with the CMS detector in 2016, 2017 and 2018: a search for heavy gluinos cascading via heavy next-to-lightest neutralino in final states with boosted Z bosons and missing transverse momentum; a search for compressed supersymmetry in final states with soft taus; and a search for compressed, …
A direct search for doubly-charged Higgs bosons $H^{\pm\pm}$ is one of the most important probe in the Higgs Triplet Model, which is motivated by generation mechanisms of tiny neutrino masses. There are two major decay modes of $H^{\pm\pm}$; i.e., the same-sign dilepton decay $H^{\pm\pm}\to\ell^\pm\ell^\pm$ and the same-sign diboson decay $H^{\pm\pm}\to W^{\pm(*)}W^{\pm(*)}$. For the case where the former decay mode is dominant, the lower limit on the mass of $H^{\pm\pm}$ has been set at about 400 GeV by ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. On the other hand, for the case where the latter decay mode …
Design and FPGA Implementation of WOMBAT: A Deep Neural Network Level-1 Trigger System for Jet Substructure Identification and Boosted $H\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ Tagging at the CMS Experiment
Many models of physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) contain enhanced couplings to third generation particles. The predicted signatures include vector-like quarks and $t\bar{t}$ resonances. We present a review of non-SUSY based searches for new physics beyond the SM in final states with third-generation quarks using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. We analyze a wide range of final states, from multi-leptonic to entirely hadronic, and many results use novel analysis techniques to identify and reconstruct highly boosted final states that are created …
In searches for new physics in the energy regime of the LHC, it is becoming increasingly important to distinguish single-jet objects that originate from the merging of the decay products of W bosons produced with high transverse momenta from jets initiated by single partons. Algorithms are defined to identify such W jets for different signals of interest, using techniques that are also applicable to other decays of bosons to hadrons that result in a single jet, such as those from highly boosted Z and Higgs bosons. The efficiency for tagging W jets is measured in data collected with the CMS det…
We show that the relatively small but coincident excesses observed around 2 TeV in the ATLAS Run 1 and Run 2 hadronic diboson searches --- when a cut on the number of tracks in the fat jets is not applied --- and the null results of all remaining high-mass diboson searches are compatible with the decay of a triboson resonance $R$ into $WZ$ plus an extra particle $X$. These decays can take place via new neutral ($Y^0$) or charged ($Y^\pm$) particles, namely $R \to Y^0 \, W$, with $Y^0 \to Z X$, or $R \to Y^\pm Z$, with $Y^\pm \to W X$. An obvious candidate for such intermediate particle is a ne…
Many physics signals presently studied at the high energy collision experiments lead to final states with jets originating from heavy flavor quarks. This report reviews the algorithms for heavy flavor jets identification developed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations in view of the Run2 data taking period at the Large Hadron Collider. The improvements of the algorithms used in 2015 and 2016 data analyses with respect to previous data taking periods are discussed, as well as the ongoing developments in view of the next years of data taking. The measurements of the performance of the algorithms o…
Many extensions to the Standard Model predict gauge interactions with enhanced couplings to third generation quarks, especially the extremely heavy top quark\cite{theoretical}. These phenomena can lead to resonances in the production of $t\bar{t}$ pairs. In this note, a model-independent search for the production of heavy resonances decaying into top-antitop quark pairs in the semileptonic final state using pp collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 8 TeV recorded with the CMS detector is presented. The analysis focuses on the semileptonic decay channels into electrons or muons and covers the range of 0.5-3…
The associated production of a single top quark together with a Higgs boson at the LHC can be used to lift the degeneracy regarding the sign of the top quark Yukawa coupling. Therefore, t-channel and tW-channel production where the Higgs boson is decaying into a $\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}$ pair is inspected. Boosted decision trees are used to assign jets to the quarks in the final state and classify the events. To maximize the separation between the signal and the dominating $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ background each event is reconstructed under a signal and a $\mathrm{t}\overline…
Measurements of top quark pair production in association with a Z boson ($\mathrm{t}\bar{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{Z}$) provide direct tests of the coupling of top quarks and Z bosons, as well as the description of the production mechanism in QCD. The measurements can be used to constrain possible contributions from anomalous top quark-Z boson couplings. A first differential $\mathrm{t}\bar{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{Z}$ production measurement has been performed by the CMS experiment using events with three leptons collected in 2016 & 2017. The differential cross sections are reported as functions of the Z b…
A search for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a single top quark (tH) is performed using the decay $\text{H} \to \text{b}\bar{\text{b}}$. This Higgs boson production mode is sensitive to the coupling modifiers of the Higgs boson to top quarks ($κ_{\text{t}}$) and to weak gauge bosons ($κ_{\text{V}}$) and thus can be used to lift the degeneracy regarding the sign of the top quark Yukawa coupling. The 2015 pp collisions data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are analyzed. Boosted decision trees are used to reconstruct and classify the events. Upper limits on the tH producti…
New, massive bosons could be found with the LHC. Theories with warped extra dimensions and supersymmetry predict the existence of such resonances, which for some model parameters, have a significant branching fraction to two Higgs bosons. A search for such particles in the $\mathrm{X}\rightarrow\mathrm{HH}\rightarrow\mathrm{b\overline{b}q\overline{q}'}\ellν$ channel with the CMS detector is presented. The analysis uses data collected during Run 2 of the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Background is suppressed by reconstructing the full $\mathrm{HH}$ decay chain using jet substructure…
Results are reported from a search for the anomalous production of highly boosted Z bosons with large transverse momentum and decaying to dimuons. Such Z bosons may be produced in the decays of new heavy particles. The search uses pp collision data at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns recorded with the CMS detector. The shape of the observed transverse-momentum distribution of Z bosons is consistent with standard model expectations. Constraints are obtained on models predicting the production of excited quarks decaying via electroweak processe…
A search for the production of heavy resonances decaying into top quark-antiquark pairs is presented. The analysis is performed in the lepton+jets and fully hadronic channels using data collected in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV using the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.6 inverse femtobarns. The selection is optimized for massive resonances, where the top quarks have large Lorentz boosts. No evidence for resonant t t-bar production is found in the data, and upper limits on the production cross section of heavy resonances are set. The exclu…
We present the first results on searches for new massive resonances decaying to a top-antitop quark ($t\bar{t}$) pair with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions with a center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13~\mathrm{TeV}$. The data set considered corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $2.6~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ recorded during the the first year of the LHC Run-2. Searches are performed by measuring the invariant mass distribution of the $t\bar{t}$ system in semileptonic and fully-hadronic final states. Dedicated techniques are used to identify the decay of highly-boosted top qu…
A recent ATLAS search for diboson resonances and a CMS search for $eejj$ resonances which both show excesses with significance around 3 sigma have generated interest in $SU(2)_R$ gauge extensions of the Standard Model with a $W'$ mass around 2 TeV. We investigate the possibility that an $SU(2)_R$ gauge extension of the MSSM compatible with an explanation of the diboson anomaly might give rise to a significant enhancement of the Higgs mass above the MSSM tree level bound $m_{h, \text{tree}} < 90 \; \text{GeV}$ due to non-decoupling D-terms. This model contains a vector-like charge -1/3 $SU(2)_R…
If the Higgs boson $H(125)$ is a composite due to new strong interactions at high energy, it has spin-one partners, $ρ_H$ and $a_H$, analogous to the $ρ$ and $a_1$ mesons of QCD. These bosons are heavy, their mass determined by the strong interaction scale. The strongly interacting particles light enough for $ρ_H$ and $a_H$ to decay to are the longitudinal weak bosons $V_L = W_L,\, Z_L$ and the Higgs boson $H$. These decay signatures are consistent with resonant diboson excesses recently reported near 2 TeV by ATLAS and CMS. We calculate $σ\times BR(ρ_H \to VV) =$ few fb and $σ\times BR(a_H \t…
