We contrast the gas kinematics and dark matter contents of $z=2$ star-forming galaxies (SFGs) from state-of-the-art cosmological simulations within the $Λ$CDM framework to observations. To this end, we create realistic mock observations of massive SFGs ($M_*>4\times10^{10} M_{\odot}$, SFR $>50~M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) from the TNG50 simulation of the IllustrisTNG suite, resembling near-infrared, adaptive-optics assisted integral-field observations from the ground. Using observational line fitting and modeling techniques, we analyse in detail the kinematics of seven TNG50 galaxies from five different projections per galaxy, and compare them to observations of twelve massive SFGs by Genzel et al. (2020). The simulated galaxies show clear signs of disc rotation but mostly exhibit more asymmetric rotation curves, partly due to large intrinsic radial and vertical velocity components. At identical inclination angle, their one-dimensional velocity profiles can vary along different lines of sight by up to $Δv=200$ km s$^{-1}$. From dynamical modelling we infer rotation speeds and velocity dispersions that are broadly consistent with observational results. We find low central dark matter fractions compatible with observations ($f_{\rm DM}^v(<R_e)=v_{\rm DM}^2(R_e)/v_{\rm circ}^2(R_e)\sim0.32\pm0.10$), however for disc effective radii $R_e$ that are mostly too small: at fixed $R_e$ the TNG50 dark matter fractions are too high by a factor of $\sim2$. We speculate that the differences in gas kinematics and dark matter content compared to the observations may be due to physical processes that are not resolved in sufficient detail with the numerical resolution available in current cosmological simulations.
ALMA cycle 3 observations of $^{12}$CO $ J = 3\rightarrow2$, $^{13}$CO $J = 4\rightarrow 3$, SiO J = $8 \rightarrow 7$, and HCN J = $ 5 \rightarrow 4$ are presented. Significant extended emission is detected in $^{12}$CO J $ = 3\rightarrow2$ with a morphology that is indicative of m = 2 tidal features, suggesting gas inflow. In addition, outflow for both nuclei are found in the $^{12}$CO J $ = 3\rightarrow2$. Significant SiO absorption is detected in the western nucleus. HCN that is morphologically distinct from CO is detected in both nuclei. These observations are compared to non-LTE radiativ…
This article gives a brief historical introduction and reviews our current understanding of jets in radio galaxies and quasars from an observational perspective, with an emphasis on observations at radio wavelengths. Recent results on the Fanaroff-Riley classification scheme, and the nature of radio structures and jets in the FR classes as well as in high-excitation and low-excitation radio galaxies are summarized. The collimation and propagation of jets from nuclear sub-pc to hundreds of kpc scales from both observatinoal and theoretical work have been discussed. The jets exhibit evidence of …

We present the molecular gas morphology and kinematics of seven nearby Seyfert galaxies obtained from our 230~GHz ALMA observations. The CO J=2-1 kinematics within the inner $\sim30$" ($\lesssim9$~kpc) reveals rotation patterns that have been explored using the Bertola rotation model and a modified version of the Kinemetry package. The latter algorithm reveals various deviations from pure circular rotation in the inner kiloparsec of all seven galaxies, including kinematic twists, decoupled and counter-rotating cores. A comparison of the global molecular gas and stellar kinematics show overall …
We have observed an N-body/Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulation of a Milky Way like barred spiral galaxy. We present a simple method that samples N-body model particles into mock Gaia stellar observations and takes into account stellar populations, dust extinction and Gaia's science performance estimates. We examine the kinematics around a nearby spiral arm at a similar position to the Perseus arm at three lines of sight in the disc plane; (l,b)=(90,0), (120,0) and (150,0) degrees. We find that the structure of the peculiar kinematics around the co-rotating spiral arm, which is found in …
We present SimSpin, a new, public, software framework for generating integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data cubes from N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies, which can be compared directly with observational datasets. SimSpin provides a consistent method for studying a galaxy's stellar component. It can be used to explore how observationally inferred measurements of kinematics, such as the spin parameter $λ_R$, are impacted by the effects of, for example, inclination, seeing conditions, distance, etc. SimSpin is written in R and has been designed to be highly modular, flexible, and ext…
We present our discovery of observational evidence for the coherence between galaxy rotation and the average line-of-sight motion of neighbors. We use the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey data analyzed with the Python CALIFA STARLIGHT Synthesis Organizer (PyCASSO) platform, and the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalog. After estimating the projected angular momentum vectors of 445 CALIFA galaxies, we build composite maps of their neighbor galaxies on the parameter space of line-of-sight velocity versus projected distance. The composite radial profiles of the luminosity-weighted …
Flattened bulges with disk-like properties are considered to be the end product of secular evolution processes at work in the inner regions of galaxies. On the contrary, classical bulges are characterized by rounder shapes and thought to be similar to low-luminosity elliptical galaxies. We aim at testing the variety of observational diagnostics which are commonly adopted to separate classical from disk-like bulges in nearby galaxies. We select a sample of eight unbarred lenticular galaxies to be morphologically and kinematically undisturbed with no evidence of other components than bulge and d…
The presence of blue cores in some dwarf early-type galaxies (dEs) in galaxy clusters suggests the scenario of late-type galaxy infall and subsequent transformation into red, quiescent dEs. We present Gemini Multi-Object Spectrographs long-slit spectroscopy of two dEs with blue cores (dE(bc)s), EVCC 591 and EVCC 516, located at the core and outskirt of the Virgo cluster, respectively. We obtained their internal kinematics along the major axis out to, at least, ~ 1 effective radius. EVCC 591 shows evidence of a kinematically decoupled core (KDC) with a size of 2" (160 pc), exhibiting an inverte…
We forecast parameter uncertainties on the mass profile of a typical Milky Way dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy using the spherical Jeans Equation and Fisher matrix formalism. We show that radial velocity measurements for 1000 individual stars can constrain the mass contained within the effective radius of a dSph to within 5%. This is consistent with constraints extracted from current observational data. We demonstrate that a minimum sample of 100,000 (10,000) stars with both radial and proper motions measurements is required to distinguish between a cusped or cored inner slope at the 2-sigma (1…
Using spectroscopic data taken with Keck II DEIMOS by the Z-PAndAS team in the Andromeda-Triangulum region, I present a comparison of the disc and satellite systems of Andromeda with those of our own Galaxy. I discuss the observed discrepancies between the masses and scale radii of Andromeda dwarf spheroidal galaxies of a given luminosity with those of the Milky Way. I also also present an analysis of the newly discovered M31 thick disc, which is measured to be hotter, more extended and thicker than that seen in the Milky Way.
In this review, we present a brief description of observational efforts to understand the Galactic thick disk and its relation to the other Galactic components. This review primarily focused on elemental abundance patterns of the thick disk population to pin down the process or processes that were responsible for its existence and evolution. Kinematic and chemical properties of disk stars establish that the thick disk is a distinct component in the Milky Way. The chemical enrichment and star formation histories hold clues to the bigger picture of understanding the Galaxy formation.
Context. Kinematical data such as the mean velocities and velocity dispersions of stellar samples are useful tools to study galactic structure and evolution. However, observational data are often incomplete (e.g., lacking the radial component of the motion) and may have significant observational errors. For example, the majority of faint stars observed with Gaia will not have their radial velocities measured. Aims. Our aim is to formulate and test a new maximum likelihood approach to estimating the kinematical parameters for a local stellar sample when only the transverse velocities are known …
The spatial and temporal relationships between stellar age, kinematics, and chemistry are a fundamental tool for uncovering the physics driving galaxy formation and evolution. Observationally, these trends are derived using carefully selected samples isolated via the application of appropriate magnitude, colour, and gravity selection functions of individual stars; conversely, the analysis of chemodynamical simulations of galaxies has traditionally been restricted to the age, metallicity, and kinematics of `composite' stellar particles comprised of open cluster-mass simple stellar populations. …
Finding an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in a globular cluster (or proving its absence) would provide valuable insights into our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However, it is challenging to identify a unique signature of an IMBH that cannot be accounted for by other processes. Observational claims of IMBH detection are indeed often based on analyses of the kinematics of stars in the cluster core, the most common signature being a rise in the velocity dispersion profile towards the centre of the system. Unfortunately, this IMBH signal is degenerate with the presence of r…

The majority of recent hydrodynamical simulations indicate the creation of central cores in the mass profiles of low-mass halos, a process that is attributed to star formation-related baryonic feedback. Core creation is regarded as one of the most promising solutions to potential issues faced by the lambda cold dark matter (LambdaCDM) cosmology on small scales. For example, the reduced dynamical mass enclosed by cores can explain the low rotational velocities measured for nearby dwarf galaxies, thus possibly lifting the seeming contradiction with the LambdaCDM expectations (the so-called "too …
Our understanding of the kinematic properties of multiple stellar populations (mPOPs) in Galactic globular clusters (GCs) is still limited compared to what we know about their chemical and photometric characteristics. Such limitation arises from the lack of a comprehensive observational investigation of this topic. Here we present the first homogeneous kinematic analysis of mPOPs in 56 GCs based on high-precision proper motions computed with Hubble Space Telescope data. We focused on red-giant-branch stars, for which the mPOP tagging is clearer, and measured the velocity dispersion of stars be…
Stellar kinematics is a powerful tool for understanding the formation process of stellar associations. Here, we present a kinematic study of the young stellar population in the Rosette nebula using the recent Gaia data and high-resolution spectra. We first isolate member candidates using the published mid-infrared photometric data and the list of X-ray sources. A total of 403 stars with similar parallaxes and proper motions are finally selected as members. The spatial distribution of the members shows that this star-forming region is highly substructured. The young open cluster NGC 2244 in the…
We use a hybrid observational/theoretical approach to study the relation between galaxy kinematics and the derived stellar and halo masses of galaxies up to z=3 as a function of stellar mass, redshift and morphology. Our observational sample consists of a concatenation of 1125 galaxies with kinematic measurements at 0.4<z<3 from long-slit and integral-field studies. We investigate several ways to measure halo masses from observations based on results from semi-analytical models, showing that galaxy halo masses can be retrieved with a scatter of ~0.4 dex by using only stellar masses. We discove…

HI line observations of nearby galaxies often reveal the presence of extraplanar and/or kinematically anomalous gas that deviates from the general circular flow. In this work, we study the dependence of kinematically anomalous HI gas in galaxies taken from the Simba cosmological simulation on galaxy properties such as HI mass fraction, specific star formation rate, and local environmental density. To identify kinematically anomalous gas, we use a simple yet effective decomposition method to separate it from regularly-rotating gas in the galactic disk; this method is well-suited for application…
Globular clusters are large and dense agglomerate of stars. At variance with smaller clusters of stars, they exhibit signs of some chemical evolution. At least for this reason, they are intermediate between open clusters and massive objects such as nuclear clusters or compact galaxies. While some facts are well established, the increasing amount of observational data are revealing a complexity that has so far defied the attempts to interpret the whole data set in a simple scenario. We review this topic focusing on the main observational features of clusters in the Milky Way and its satellites.…
We describe the dynamical evolution of a unique type of dark star cluster model in which the majority of the cluster mass at Hubble time is dominated by an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). We analyzed results from about 2000 star cluster models (Survey Database I) simulated using the Monte-Carlo code MOCCA and identified these dark star cluster models. Taking one of these models, we apply the method of simulating realistic "mock observations" by utilizing the COCOA and SISCO codes to obtain the photometric and kinematic observational properties of the dark star cluster model at 12 Gyr. We …
Understanding the formation and evolution of high mass star clusters requires comparisons between theoretical and observational data to be made. Unfortunately, while the full phase space of simulated regions is available, often only partial 2D spatial and kinematic data is available for observed regions. This raises the question as to whether cluster parameters determined from 2D data alone are reliable and representative of clusters real parameters and the impact of line-of-sight orientation. In this paper we derive parameters for a simulated cluster formed from a cloud-cloud collision with t…
We report the discovery of clear observational signs of past accretion/merger events in one of the Milky Way satellite galaxies, the Sextans dwarf spheroidal (dSph). These were uncovered in the spatial distribution, internal kinematics and metallicity properties of Sextans stars using literature CTIO/DECam photometric and Magellan/MMFS spectroscopic catalogues. We find the spatial distribution of stars to vary as a function of the colour/metallicity, being rather regular and round for the blue (metal-poor) red giant branch and main-sequence turn-off stars but much more elliptical and irregular…
This paper presents 828 new 21 cm neutral hydrogen line measurements carried out with the FORT receiver of the meridian transit Nançay radio telescope (NRT) in the years 2000 -- 2007. This observational program was part of a larger project aimed at collecting an exhaustive and magnitude-complete HI extragalactic catalog for Tully-Fisher applications. Through five massive data releases, the KLUN series has collected a homogeneous sample of 4876 HI-spectra of spiral galaxies, complete down to a flux of 5 Jy.km.s^{-1} and with declination delta > -40°. We publish here the last release of the KLUN…
In this review our aim is to summarize the observed properties of pseudobulges and classical bulges. We utilize an empirical approach to studying the properties of bulges in disk galaxies, and restrict our analysis to statistical proper- ties. A clear bimodality is observed in a number of properties including morphology, structural properties, star formation, gas content & stellar population, and kinematics. As well as summarizing known methods to identify pseudobulges and classical bulges we also show new results, including absorption line indices that can be used to identify different bulge …
The new observational data concerning distribution, excitation, and kinematics of the ionized gas in the giant early-type disk galaxy NGC 2655 obtained at the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO RAS) and at the 2.5m telescope of the Caucasian Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute (CMO SAI MSU) are presented in this work. The joint analysis of these and earlier spectral observations has allowed us to make a conclusion about multiple nature of the gas in NGC 2655. Together with a proper large gaseous disk experiencing regular circular rotation in the…

We present neutral hydrogen (HI) and warm molecular hydrogen (H2) observations of the young (10^2 years) radio galaxy PKS B1718-649. We study the morphology and the kinematics of both gas components, focusing, in particular, on their properties in relation to the triggering of the radio activity. The regular kinematics of the large scale HI disk, seen in emission, suggests that an interaction event occurred too long ago to be responsible for the recent triggering of the radio activity. In absorption, we detect two absorption lines along the narrow line of sight of the compact (r<2 pc) radio so…
The main objective of my thesis was to provide us, for the first time, with a reliable view of the distant Hubble sequence, and its evolution over the past 6 Gyr. To achieve this goal, we have created a new morphological classification method which (1) includes all the available observational data, (2) can be easily reproduced, and (3) presents a negligible subjectivity. This method allows us to study homogeneously the morphology of local and distant galaxies. The first step has been to study the evolution of galaxies using the IMAGES survey. This survey allowed us to establish the kinematic s…
A recent analysis of data from the ESA Gaia mission demonstrated that the kinematics of stars in the Milky Way can be modelled without invoking the presence of dark matter whatsoever. Indeed, the higher-than-Keplerian velocities observed in outer stars can be ascribed to the properties of the general relativistic (GR) metric assumed to describe the Galaxy. Here we generalize the concept, and derive the most general exact GR model for a stationary axi-symmetric dynamically cold dust structure. We explicitly show how deviations from the commonly adopted Newtonian dynamics are indeed manifest eve…
Massive stars produce copious quantities of ultraviolet radiation beyond the Lyman limit, photoionizing the interstellar medium (ISM) and producing H II regions. As strong sources of recombination- and forbidden-line emission, infrared continuum, and thermal (free-free) radio continuum, H II regions serve as readily-observable beacons of massive star formation in the Milky Way and external galaxies. Along with supernovae, H II regions are dominant sources of feedback in star-forming galaxies, injecting radiative and mechanical luminosity into the ISM. H II regions may prove more important than…
We present a study into the capabilities of integrated and spatially resolved integral field spectroscopy of galaxies at z=2-4 with the future HARMONI spectrograph for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) using the simulation pipeline, HSIM. We focus particularly on the instrument's capabilities in stellar absorption line integral field spectroscopy, which will allow us to study the stellar kinematics and stellar population characteristics. Such measurements for star-forming and passive galaxies around the peak star formation era will provide a critical insight into the star formatio…
Feedback processes play a fundamental role in the regulation of the star formation (SF) activity in galaxies and, in particular, in the quenching of early-type galaxies (ETGs) as has been inferred by observational and numerical studies of Lambda CDM models. At z = 0, ETGs exhibit well-known fundamental scaling relations, but the connection between them and the physical processes shaping ETG evolution remains unknown. This work aims at studying the impact of the energetic feedback due to active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the formation and evolution of ETGs.We focus on assessing the impact of AGN f…
Galactic accretion interacts in complex ways with gaseous halos, including galactic winds. As a result, observational diagnostics typically probe a range of intertwined physical phenomena. Because of this complexity, cosmological hydrodynamic simulations have played a key role in developing observational diagnostics of galactic accretion. In this chapter, we review the status of different observational diagnostics of circumgalactic gas flows, in both absorption (galaxy pair and down-the-barrel observations in neutral hydrogen and metals; kinematic and azimuthal angle diagnostics; the cosmologi…
We demonstrate the utility of CI as a tracer of photoevaporative winds that are being driven from discs by their ambient UV environment. Commonly observed CO lines only trace these winds in relatively weak UV environments and are otherwise dissociated in the wind at the intermediate to high UV fields that most young stars experience. However, CI traces unsubtle kinematic signatures of a wind in intermediate UV environments ($\sim1000$G$_0$) and can be used to place constraints on the kinematics and temperature of the wind. In CI position-velocity diagrams external photoevaporation results in v…
We present our analysis of the magnetic field structures from 6000 au to 100 au scales in the Class 0 protostar B335 inferred from our JCMT POL-2 observations and the ALMA archival polarimetric data. To interpret the observational results, we perform a series of (non-)ideal MHD simulations of the collapse of a rotating non-turbulent dense core, whose initial conditions are adopted to be the same as observed in B335, and generate synthetic polarization maps. The comparison of our JCMT and simulation results suggests that the magnetic field on a 6000 au scale in B335 is pinched and well aligned …
