We study the growth rate of some power-free languages. For any integer $k$ and real $β>1$, we let $α(k,β)$ be the growth rate of the number of $β$-free words of a given length over the alphabet $\{1,2,\ldots, k\}$. Shur studied the asymptotic behavior of $α(k,β)$ for $β\ge2$ as $k$ goes to infinity. He suggested a conjecture regarding the asymptotic behavior of $α(k,β)$ as $k$ goes to infinity when $1<β<2$. He showed that for $\frac{9}{8}\leβ<2$ the asymptotic upper-bound holds of his conjecture holds. We show that the asymptotic lower-bound of his conjecture holds. This implies that the conjecture is true for $\frac{9}{8}\leβ<2$.
Locating arrays (LAs) can be used to detect and identify interaction faults among factors in a component-based system. The optimality and constructions of LAs with a single fault have been investigated extensively under the assumption that all the factors have the same values. However, in real life, different factors in a system have different numbers of possible values. Thus, it is necessary for LAs to satisfy such requirements. We herein establish a general lower bound on the size of mixed-level $(\bar{1},t)$-locating arrays. Some methods for constructing LAs including direct and recursive c…
A permutation $σ\in S_n$ is a $k$-superpattern (or $k$-universal) if it contains each $τ\in S_k$ as a pattern. This notion of "superpatterns" can be generalized to words on smaller alphabets, and several questions about superpatterns on small alphabets have recently been raised in the survey of Engen and Vatter. One of these questions concerned the length of the shortest $k$-superpattern on $[k+1]$. A construction by Miller gave an upper bound of $(k^2+k)/2$, which we show is optimal up to lower-order terms. This implies a weaker version of a conjecture by Eriksson, Eriksson, Linusson and Wast…
We consider a communication network where there exist wiretappers who can access a subset of channels, called a wiretap set, which is chosen from a given collection of wiretap sets. The collection of wiretap sets can be arbitrary. Secure network coding is applied to prevent the source information from being leaked to the wiretappers. In secure network coding, the required alphabet size is an open problem not only of theoretical interest but also of practical importance, because it is closely related to the implementation of such coding schemes in terms of computational complexity and storage r…
The subword complexity of a word $w$ over a finite alphabet $\mathcal{A}$ is a function that assigns for each positive integer $n$, the number of distinct subwords of length $n$ in $w$. The subword complexity of a word is a good measure of the randomness of the word and gives insight to what the word itself looks like. In this paper, we discuss the properties of subword complexity sequences, and consider different variables that influence their shape. We also compute the number of distinct subword complexity sequences for certain lengths of words over different alphabets, and state some conjec…
Let $Λ^{\ast}$ be the free monoid of (finite) words over a not necessarily finite alphabet $Λ$, which is equipped with some (partial) order. This ordering lifts to $Λ^{\ast}$, where it extends the divisibility ordering of words. The MacNeille completion of $Λ^{\ast}$ constitutes a complete lattice ordered monoid and is realized by the system of "closed" lower sets in $Λ^*$ (ordered by inclusion) or its isomorphic copy formed of the "closed" upper sets (ordered by reverse inclusion). Under some additional hypothesis on $Λ$, one can easily identify the closed lower sets as the finitely generated…
In combinatorics on words, a word $w$ over an alphabet $Σ$ is said to avoid a pattern $p$ over an alphabet $Δ$ if there is no factor $f$ of $w$ such that $f=h(p)$ where $h:Δ^*\toΣ^*$ is a non-erasing morphism. A pattern $p$ is said to be $k$-avoidable if there exists an infinite word over a $k$-letter alphabet that avoids $p$. A pattern is \emph{doubled} if every variable occurs at least twice. Doubled patterns are known to be $3$-avoidable. Currie, Mol, and Rampersad have considered a generalized notion which allows variable occurrences to be reversed. That is, $h(V^R)$ is the mirror image of…
We study the threshold between avoidable and unavoidable repetitions in infinite balanced sequences over finite alphabets. The conjecture stated by Rampersad, Shallit and Vandomme says that the minimal critical exponent of balanced sequences over the alphabet of size $d \geq 5$ equals $\frac{d-2}{d-3}$. This conjecture is known to hold for $d\in \{5, 6, 7,8,9,10\}$. We refute this conjecture by showing that the picture is different for bigger alphabets. We prove that critical exponents of balanced sequences over an alphabet of size $d\geq 11$ are lower bounded by $\frac{d-1}{d-2}$ and this bou…
A locally repairable code (LRC) with locality $r$ allows for the recovery of any erased codeword symbol using only $r$ other codeword symbols. A Singleton-type bound dictates the best possible trade-off between the dimension and distance of LRCs --- an LRC attaining this trade-off is deemed \emph{optimal}. Such optimal LRCs have been constructed over alphabets growing linearly in the block length. Unlike the classical Singleton bound, however, it was not known if such a linear growth in the alphabet size is necessary, or for that matter even if the alphabet needs to grow at all with the block …
A word is square-free if it does not contain a nonempty word of the form $XX$ as a factor. A famous 1906 result of Thue asserts that there exist arbitrarily long square-free words over a $3$-letter alphabet. We study square-free words with additional properties involving single-letter deletions and extensions of words. A square-free word is steady if it remains square-free after deletion of any single letter. We prove that there exist infinitely many steady words over a $4$-letter alphabet. We also demonstrate that one may construct steady words of any length by picking letters from arbitrary …
A string $w$ is called a minimal absent word (MAW) for another string $T$ if $w$ does not occur in $T$ but the proper substrings of $w$ occur in $T$. For example, let $Σ= \{\mathtt{a, b, c}\}$ be the alphabet. Then, the set of MAWs for string $w = \mathtt{abaab}$ is $\{\mathtt{aaa, aaba, bab, bb, c}\}$. In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of MAWs in the sliding window model, namely, how the set of MAWs changes when a sliding window of fixed length $d$ is shifted over the input string $T$ of length $n$, where $1 \leq d < n$. We present \emph{tight} upper and lower bounds on the max…
Rich words are characterized by containing the maximum possible number of distinct palindromes. Several characteristic properties of rich words have been studied; yet the analysis of repetitions in rich words still involves some interesting open problems. We address lower bounds on the repetition threshold of infinite rich words over 2 and 3-letter alphabets, and construct a candidate infinite rich word over the alphabet $Σ_2=\{0,1\}$ with a small critical exponent of $2+\sqrt{2}/2$. This represents the first progress on an open problem of Vesti from 2017.
We study scalar-linear and vector-linear solutions of the generalized combination network. We derive new upper and lower bounds on the maximum number of nodes in the middle layer, depending on the network parameters and the alphabet size. These bounds improve and extend the parameter range of known bounds. Using these new bounds we present a lower bound and an upper bound on the gap in the alphabet size between optimal scalar-linear and optimal vector-linear network coding solutions. For a fixed network structure, while varying the number of middle-layer nodes $r$, the asymptotic behavior of t…
We revisit staircases for words and prove several exact as well as asymptotic results for longest left-most staircase subsequences and subwords and staircase separation number, the latter being defined as the number of consecutive maximal staircase subwords packed in a word. We study asymptotic properties of the sequence $h_{r,k}(n),$ the number of $n$-array words with $r$ separations over alphabet $[k]$ and show that for any $r\geq 0,$ the growth sequence $\big(h_{r,k}(n)\big)^{1/n}$ converges to a characterized limit, independent of $r.$ In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of the r…
Let $s_n$ be the number of words consisting of the ternary alphabet consisting of the digits 0, 1, and 2 such that no subword (or factor) is a square (a word concatenated with itself, e.g., $11$, $1212$, or $102102$). From computational evidence, $s_n$ grows exponentially at a rate of about $1.317277^n$. While known upper bounds are already relatively close to the conjectured rate, effective lower bounds are much more difficult to obtain. In this paper, we construct a $54$-Brinkhuis $952$-triple, which leads to an improved lower bound on the number of $n$-letter ternary squarefree words: $952^…
Secure codes are widely-studied combinatorial structures which were introduced for traitor tracing in broadcast encryption. To determine the maximum size of such structures is the main research objective. In this paper, we investigate the lower bounds for secure codes and their related structures. First, we give some improved lower bounds for the rates of $2$-frameproof codes and $\overline{2}$-separable codes for slightly large alphabet size. Then we improve the lower bounds for the rate of some related structures, i.e., strongly $2$-separable matrices and $2$-cancellative set families. Final…
