The miscibility of Au and Li exhibits a potential application as an adhesion layer and electrode material in secondary batteries. Here, to explore alloying properties, we constructed a neural network potential (NNP) of Au-Li binary systems based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. To accelerate construction of NNPs, we proposed an efficient and inexpensive method of structural dataset generation. The predictions by the constructed NNP on lattice parameters and phonon properties agree well with those obtained by DFT calculations. We also investigated the mixing energy of Au$_{1-x}$Li$_{x}$ with fine composition grids, showing excellent agreement with DFT verifications. We found the existence of various compositions with structures on and slightly above the convex hull, which can explain the lack of consensus on the Au-Li stable phases in previous studies. Moreover, we newly found Au$_{0.469}$Li$_{0.531}$ as a stable phase, which has never been reported elsewhere. Finally, we examined the alloying process starting from the phase separated structure to the complete mixing phase. We found that when multiple adjacent Au atoms dissolved into Li, the alloying of the entire Au/Li interface started from the dissolved region. This paper demonstrates the applicability of NNPs toward miscible phases and provides the understanding of the alloying mechanism.
Significant discrepancies have been observed and discussed on the lattice stability of Cr between the predictions from the ab initio calculations and the CALPHAD approach. In the current work, we carefully examined the possible structures for pure Cr and reviewed the history back from how Kaufman originally determined the Gibbs energy of FCC-Cr in the 1970s. The reliability of Cr lattice stability derived by the CALPHAD and ab initio approaches was systematically discussed. It is concluded that the Cr lattice stability based on the CALPHAD approach has large uncertainty. Meanwhile, we cannot c…
Practical applications of nanocrystalline metallic thin films are often limited by instabilities. In addition to grain growth, the thin film itself can become unstable and collapse into islands through solid-state dewetting. Selective alloying can improve nanocrystalline stability, but the impact of this approach on dewetting is not clear. In this study, two alloys that exhibit nanocrystalline thermal stability as ball milled powders are evaluated as thin films. While both alloys demonstrated dewetting behavior following annealing, the severity decreased in more dilute compositions. Ultimately…
The interface stability against small perturbations of the planar solid-liquid interface is considered analytically in linear approximation. Following the analytical procedure of Trivedi and Kurz (Trivedi R, Kurz W. Acta Metall 1986;34:1663), which is advancing the original treatment of morphological stability by Mullins and Sekerka (Mullins WW, Sekerka RF. J Appl Phys 1964;35:444) to the case of rapid solidification, we extend the model by introducing the local nonequilibrium in the solute diffusion field around the interface. A solution to the heat- and mass-transport problem around the pert…
The stability of a quasicrystalline structure, recently obtained in a molecular-dynamics simulation of rapid cooling of a binary melt, is analyzed for binary hard-sphere mixtures within a density-functional approach. It is found that this quasicrystal is metastable relative to crystalline and fluid phases for diameter ratios above 0.83. Such trend is partially reversed for lower diameter ratios, since the quasicrystal becomes stable with respect to the crystal but does not reach a coexistence with the fluid.
AB5 compounds (A = rare earth, B = transition metal) have been widely studied as anodes for Ni-MH applications. However, they have reached their technical limitations and the search for new promising materials with high capacity is foreseen. ABy compounds (2 < y < 5) are good candidates. They are made by stacking [AB5] and [A2B4] units along the c crystallographic axis. The latter unit allows a large increase in capacity, while the [AB5] unit provides good cycling stability. Consequently, the AB3.8 composition (i.e. A5B19 with three [AB5] for one [A2B4]) is expected to exhibit better cycling s…
Honeycomb structure has been frequently observed in two-dimensional (2D) materials. CuAu in the buckled honeycomb (BHC) structure has been synthesized recently, which is the first case of 2D intermetallic compounds. Here, the dynamical stability of 2D $AX$ in the BHC structure, where $A=$ Cu, Ag, and Au and $X$ is a metallic element in the periodic table, is systematically studied by calculating phonon dispersions from first-principles. Among 135 $AX$, more than 50 $AX$ are identified to be dynamically stable. In addition, (i) a relationship between the dynamical stability and the formation en…
Although many binary compounds have the B2 (CsCl-type) structure in the thermodynamic phase diagram, an origin of the structural stability is not understood well. Here, we focus on 416 compounds in the B2 structure extracted from the Materials Project, and study the dynamical stability of those compounds from first principles. We demonstrate that the B2 phase stability lies in whether the lowest frequency phonon at the $M$ point in the Brillouin zone is endowed with a positive frequency. We show that the interatomic interactions up to the fourth nearest neighbor atoms are necessary for stabili…
Using first principles calculations, the energetic stability of two-dimensional (2D) binary compounds $XY$ is investigated, where $X$ and $Y$ indicate the metallic element from Li to Pb in the periodic table. Here, 1081 compounds in the buckled honeycomb (BHC), buckled square, B2, L1$_0$, and B$_h$ structures are studied. For the compounds that have negative formation energy in the BHC structure or the compounds that can have the B$_h$ structure, the phonon dispersions of the 2D structures are also calculated. We demonstrate that (i) a negative formation energy is neither a sufficient nor nece…
The defects, the behavior of 3d electrons and the hyperfine interactions in binary Fe-Al alloys with different Al contents have been studied by the measurements of positron lifetime spectra, coincidence Doppler broadening spectra of positron annihilation radiation and Mossbauer spectra. The results show that on increasing the Al content in Fe-Al alloys, the mean positron lifetime of the alloys increase, while the mean electron density of the alloys decrease. The increase of Al content in binary Fe-Al alloys will decrease the amount of unpaired 3d electrons; as a consequence the probability of …
Building on the recent discovery of tough nanocrystalline Cu-Zr alloys with amorphous intergranular films, this paper investigates ternary nanocrystalline Cu-Zr-Hf alloys with a focus on understanding how alloy composition affects the formation of disordered complexions. Binary Cu-Zr and Cu-Hf alloys with similar initial grain sizes were also fabricated for comparison. The thermal stability of the nanocrystalline alloys was evaluated by annealing at 950 °C (>95% of the solidus temperatures), followed by detailed characterization of the grain boundary structure. All of the ternary alloys exhibi…
Chromium based inverse Heusler compounds of the type Cr2YZ (Y=Co, Fe; Z=Al, Ga, In, Si, Ge, Sn) have been proposed as fully compensated half-metallic ferrimagnets. Such materials are of large interest for spintronics because they combine small magnetic moment with high spin polarization over a wide temperature range. We assess their thermodynamic stability by their formation enthalpies obtained from density functional theory calculations. All compounds under investigation are unstable. Cr2FeSi and Cr2CoAl are stable with respect to the elemental constituents, but decompose into binary phases. …
We find that three nonstoichiometric cubic binary chromium chalcogenides, namely Cr3S4, Cr3Se4, and Cr3Te4, are stable half-metallic ferromagnets with wide half-metallic gaps on the basis of systematic state-of-the-arts first-principles calculations. We optimize their structures, and then calculate their magnetic moments, electronic structures, formation heats, and elastic moduli and investigate their structural stability and robustness of ferromagnetism against antiferromagnetic fluctuations. Our calculated results show that the three sulvanite phases are structurally stable and ferromagnetic…
Diffusional jumps can produce fluctuating electric field gradients at nuclei of jumping atoms. Using perturbed angular correlation of gamma rays (PAC), jumps of probe atoms cause nuclear quadrupole relaxation that can be fitted to obtain the mean jump frequency. An overview is given of the application of this approach to highly ordered intermetallic compounds having the L12 (Cu3Au) crystal structure. New results are then presented for jump frequencies of 111In/Cd probe atoms in pseudo-binary L12 compounds of the forms In3(La1-xPrx) and (In1-xSnx)3La. For the mixed rare-earth system, jump frequ…
The thermal stability of nanocrystalline (nc) Al has been studied by means of positron lifetime spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD), prepared by compacting nanoparticles under high pressures. Those nanoparticles were produced by the flow-levitation (FL) method [1] and the arc-discharge (DC) method. Effect of oxide at nanoparticle surface on structure stability was investigated especially in this experiment. The positron lifetime results reveal that vacancy clusters in grain boundaries are dominant positron traps according to the high relative intensity of the positron lifetime τ2 in both …
In an earlier communication we have developed a recursion based approach to the study of phase stability and transition of binary alloys. We had combined the recursion method introduced by Haydock, Heine and Kelly and the our augmented space approach with the orbital peeling technique proposed by Burke to determine the small energy differences involved in the discussion of phase stability. We extend that methodology for the study of MnCr alloys.
Recently, the hydrogen adsorption and diffusion on the CeO2 (111) surface have been a vividly discussed topic because of its outstanding catalytic activity and selectivity in hydrogenation reactions. However, for the strongly reduced CeO2 (111) surface, the structure as well as the stability of hydride anions are still unclear. By virtue of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that in the strongly reduced CeO2 (111) surface, the hydride can be stabilized on the largely metallic surface consisting of Ce3+ when O vacancies are mainly in the outmost layers. For the surface with O…
