LPCNet is an efficient vocoder that combines linear prediction and deep neural network modules to keep the computational complexity low. In this work, we present two techniques to further reduce it's complexity, aiming for a low-cost LPCNet vocoder-based neural Text-to-Speech (TTS) System. These techniques are: 1) Sample-bunching, which allows LPCNet to generate more than one audio sample per inference; and 2) Bit-bunching, which reduces the computations in the final layer of LPCNet. With the proposed bunching techniques, LPCNet, in conjunction with a Deep Convolutional TTS (DCTTS) acoustic model, shows a 2.19x improvement over the baseline run-time when running on a mobile device, with a less than 0.1 decrease in TTS mean opinion score (MOS).
Text-to-Speech (TTS) services that run on edge devices have many advantages compared to cloud TTS, e.g., latency and privacy issues. However, neural vocoders with a low complexity and small model footprint inevitably generate annoying sounds. This study proposes a Bunched LPCNet2, an improved LPCNet architecture that provides highly efficient performance in high-quality for cloud servers and in a low-complexity for low-resource edge devices. Single logistic distribution achieves computational efficiency, and insightful tricks reduce the model footprint while maintaining speech quality. A DualR…
Neural speech synthesis algorithms are a promising new approach for coding speech at very low bitrate. They have so far demonstrated quality that far exceeds traditional vocoders, at the cost of very high complexity. In this work, we present a low-bitrate neural vocoder based on the LPCNet model. The use of linear prediction and sparse recurrent networks makes it possible to achieve real-time operation on general-purpose hardware. We demonstrate that LPCNet operating at 1.6 kb/s achieves significantly higher quality than MELP and that uncompressed LPCNet can exceed the quality of a waveform co…
Neural vocoders have recently demonstrated high quality speech synthesis, but typically require a high computational complexity. LPCNet was proposed as a way to reduce the complexity of neural synthesis by using linear prediction (LP) to assist an autoregressive model. At inference time, LPCNet relies on the LP coefficients being explicitly computed from the input acoustic features. That makes the design of LPCNet-based systems more complicated, while adding the constraint that the input features must represent a clean speech spectrum. We propose an end-to-end version of LPCNet that lifts thes…
In this paper, we propose the FeatherWave, yet another variant of WaveRNN vocoder combining the multi-band signal processing and the linear predictive coding. The LPCNet, a recently proposed neural vocoder which utilized the linear predictive characteristic of speech signal in the WaveRNN architecture, can generate high quality speech with a speed faster than real-time on a single CPU core. However, LPCNet is still not efficient enough for online speech generation tasks. To address this issue, we adopt the multi-band linear predictive coding for WaveRNN vocoder. The multi-band method enables t…

Traditional speech enhancement systems produce speech with compromised quality. Here we propose to use the high quality speech generation capability of neural vocoders for better quality speech enhancement. We term this parametric resynthesis (PR). In previous work, we showed that PR systems generate high quality speech for a single speaker using two neural vocoders, WaveNet and WaveGlow. Both these vocoders are traditionally speaker dependent. Here we first show that when trained on data from enough speakers, these vocoders can generate speech from unseen speakers, both male and female, with …

GAN vocoders are currently one of the state-of-the-art methods for building high-quality neural waveform generative models. However, most of their architectures require dozens of billion floating-point operations per second (GFLOPS) to generate speech waveforms in samplewise manner. This makes GAN vocoders still challenging to run on normal CPUs without accelerators or parallel computers. In this work, we propose a new architecture for GAN vocoders that mainly depends on recurrent and fully-connected networks to directly generate the time domain signal in framewise manner. This results in cons…
Recently, GAN vocoders have seen rapid progress in speech synthesis, starting to outperform autoregressive models in perceptual quality with much higher generation speed. However, autoregressive vocoders are still the common choice for neural generation of speech signals coded at very low bit rates. In this paper, we present a GAN vocoder which is able to generate wideband speech waveforms from parameters coded at 1.6 kbit/s. The proposed model is a modified version of the StyleMelGAN vocoder that can run in frame-by-frame manner, making it suitable for streaming applications. The experimental…
We present a lightweight adaptable neural TTS system with high quality output. The system is composed of three separate neural network blocks: prosody prediction, acoustic feature prediction and Linear Prediction Coding Net as a neural vocoder. This system can synthesize speech with close to natural quality while running 3 times faster than real-time on a standard CPU. The modular setup of the system allows for simple adaptation to new voices with a small amount of data. We first demonstrate the ability of the system to produce high quality speech when trained on large, high quality datasets. …
This paper proposes weight regularization for a faster neural vocoder. Pruning time-consuming DNN modules is a promising way to realize a real-time vocoder on a CPU (e.g. WaveRNN, LPCNet). Regularization that encourages sparsity is also effective in avoiding the quality degradation created by pruning. However, the orders of weight matrices must be contiguous in SIMD size for fast vocoding. To ensure this order, we propose explicit SIMD size aware regularization. Our proposed method reshapes a weight matrix into a tensor so that the weights are aligned by group size in advance, and then compute…

Low and ultra-low-bitrate neural speech coding achieves unprecedented coding gain by generating speech signals from compact speech features. This paper introduces additional coding efficiency in neural speech coding by reducing the temporal redundancy existing in the frame-level feature sequence via a recurrent neural predictor. The prediction can achieve a low-entropy residual representation, which we discriminatively code based on their contribution to the signal reconstruction. The harmonization of feature prediction and discriminative coding results in a dynamic bit allocation algorithm th…
In this paper, we propose an improved LPCNet vocoder using a linear prediction (LP)-structured mixture density network (MDN). The recently proposed LPCNet vocoder has successfully achieved high-quality and lightweight speech synthesis systems by combining a vocal tract LP filter with a WaveRNN-based vocal source (i.e., excitation) generator. However, the quality of synthesized speech is often unstable because the vocal source component is insufficiently represented by the mu-law quantization method, and the model is trained without considering the entire speech production mechanism. To address…
In this work, we present the SOMOS dataset, the first large-scale mean opinion scores (MOS) dataset consisting of solely neural text-to-speech (TTS) samples. It can be employed to train automatic MOS prediction systems focused on the assessment of modern synthesizers, and can stimulate advancements in acoustic model evaluation. It consists of 20K synthetic utterances of the LJ Speech voice, a public domain speech dataset which is a common benchmark for building neural acoustic models and vocoders. Utterances are generated from 200 TTS systems including vanilla neural acoustic models as well as…
State-of-the-art sequence-to-sequence acoustic networks, that convert a phonetic sequence to a sequence of spectral features with no explicit prosody prediction, generate speech with close to natural quality, when cascaded with neural vocoders, such as Wavenet. However, the combined system is typically too heavy for real-time speech synthesis on a CPU. In this work we present a sequence-to-sequence acoustic network combined with lightweight LPCNet neural vocoder, designed for real-time speech synthesis on a CPU. In addition, the system allows sentence-level pace and expressivity control at inf…
Cross-lingual voice conversion (VC) is an important and challenging problem due to significant mismatches of the phonetic set and the speech prosody of different languages. In this paper, we build upon the neural text-to-speech (TTS) model, i.e., FastSpeech, and LPCNet neural vocoder to design a new cross-lingual VC framework named FastSpeech-VC. We address the mismatches of the phonetic set and the speech prosody by applying Phonetic PosteriorGrams (PPGs), which have been proved to bridge across speaker and language boundaries. Moreover, we add normalized logarithm-scale fundamental frequency…
This paper presents an end-to-end text-to-speech system with low latency on a CPU, suitable for real-time applications. The system is composed of an autoregressive attention-based sequence-to-sequence acoustic model and the LPCNet vocoder for waveform generation. An acoustic model architecture that adopts modules from both the Tacotron 1 and 2 models is proposed, while stability is ensured by using a recently proposed purely location-based attention mechanism, suitable for arbitrary sentence length generation. During inference, the decoder is unrolled and acoustic feature generation is perform…
Data augmentation is one of the most effective ways to make end-to-end automatic speech recognition (ASR) perform close to the conventional hybrid approach, especially when dealing with low-resource tasks. Using recent advances in speech synthesis (text-to-speech, or TTS), we build our TTS system on an ASR training database and then extend the data with synthesized speech to train a recognition model. We argue that, when the training data amount is relatively low, this approach can allow an end-to-end model to reach hybrid systems' quality. For an artificial low-to-medium-resource setup, we co…
Modifying the pitch and timing of an audio signal are fundamental audio editing operations with applications in speech manipulation, audio-visual synchronization, and singing voice editing and synthesis. Thus far, methods for pitch-shifting and time-stretching that use digital signal processing (DSP) have been favored over deep learning approaches due to their speed and relatively higher quality. However, even existing DSP-based methods for pitch-shifting and time-stretching induce artifacts that degrade audio quality. In this paper, we propose Controllable LPCNet (CLPCNet), an improved LPCNet…
With the number of smart devices increasing, the demand for on-device text-to-speech (TTS) increases rapidly. In recent years, many prominent End-to-End TTS methods have been proposed, and have greatly improved the quality of synthesized speech. However, to ensure the qualified speech, most TTS systems depend on large and complex neural network models, and it's hard to deploy these TTS systems on-device. In this paper, a small-footprint, fast, stable network for on-device TTS is proposed, named as DeviceTTS. DeviceTTS makes use of a duration predictor as a bridge between encoder and decoder so…
In this work, a robust and efficient text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system named Triple M is proposed for large-scale online application. The key components of Triple M are: 1) A sequence-to-sequence model adopts a novel multi-guidance attention to transfer complementary advantages from guiding attention mechanisms to the basic attention mechanism without in-domain performance loss and online service modification. Compared with single attention mechanism, multi-guidance attention not only brings better naturalness to long sentence synthesis, but also reduces the word error rate by 26.8%. 2) A …
